Realistic or Modern In the Eye of the Storm Characters

Main
Here
Storm+Clouds.jpg

In the preparation for a big storm, many dogs were taken to a shelter and promised refuge while their owners fled. Even strays were brought in under the guise that they too - would be safe from the storm. Things go well for the first day or two but then the humans leave the dogs behind to fend for themselves. Now on their own on in the shelter, it is up to the dogs to come together to survive whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at them.

1) PG13 only. No doggies gettin' it on.
2) Have respect for me and all other roleplayers
3) I don't want to see any saw level gore.
4) Some of us have obligations IRL so cannot post all hours of the day. As such, I don't want to see entire pages between two people. At most, only do three posts in a row until others can log on and post as well. This is a GROUP roleplay. Treat it as such.
5) Third person only. I prefer that everyone use proper grammar and give me a minimum of one paragraph per post.
6) PM all profiles to me for approval

The Alphas (Breeding Pair)[edit]
Within the wolf pack, the alphas, now more commonly referred to as the breeding pair, are the only wolves in the group which breed and produce offspring; they are the matriarch and patriarch of the family[10]. The alpha or parent role consists of one male and one female which are pair-bonded and usually unrelated, although they may be distantly related or, in some cases, fully related. This variable degree of relation and inbreeding can significantly impact the viability of the pack, and inbreeding is known to commonly occur in both captive and wild wolf populations. It is common for an aging or sick alpha to be replaced by one of their offspring, with this new alpha now becoming the mate to his or her own parent. This inbreeding depression can cause weak pups, lowered reproduction rates, blindness, and reduced longevity[11].

The alphas represent the most dominant rank in the wolf pack, and so are held in the highest esteem by the other members of the unit[14]. Along with sole breeding, the alphas are responsible for control and leadership of the pack[15], including establishing pack territory, leading hunts, and accepting or rejecting outside wolves[16]. The loss of an alpha can spell complete dissolution for the entire pack[12]. Because of this, the alphas always eat first, and are always awarded the biggest and best portions of the kill[15]. Lower-ranking individuals showing disrespect to the alpha will be punished, or sometimes banished from the pack. The societal rules existing within the wolf pack do so in order to preserve the whole and protect the alpha, and these rules must be imposed. Due to the alphas’ vital importance to the viability of the pack, their safety is a first priority, and so the majority of enforcement falls to the next-in-command: the betas[14].

The Betas[edit]
Because of their role, the betas are often referred to as the “enforcers” of the pack[14]. These wolves rank directly below the alphas, and generally consisting of one or two individuals[15]. They are often the wolves which will first confront a newcomer or potential threat[14]. The betas serve both as enforcement and second-in-command, often taking over control while the alphas are away or preoccupied with breeding. Should anything happen to an alpha, a beta is next in line to satisfy the vacancy[17]. As such, these wolves are also highly respected within the pack, and receive the next choicest portion of the kill[14]. The betas are believed to be the most trusted and most bonded companions of the alpha pair, acting as “generals” in the pack hierarchy[15].

Mid-Ranking Wolves[edit]
All other wolves in the group are considered subordinates, though they serve important roles in the pack dynamic[15]. The mid-ranking wolves fall between the betas and the lowest rank, the omega. Mid-ranking wolves have been organized and re-organized into various divisions in an attempt to understand their complex interactions, but in reality the middle ranks are constantly interchanging, with dominance awarded to the fittest individual for the particular endeavour at hand[18]. These wolves often serve as babysitters to the pups when the alphas and betas are away, and conditional to the pack’s size, certain individuals may fill the roles of watchers, scouts, teachers, hunters, or protectors, depending on what is needed at the time[15].

The Omega[edit]
Omegas are the lowest ranking members of the group, usually consisting of one individual of either sex. Omegas sometimes represent the weakest of the pack, or may have been demoted to the position as a consequence of bad behavior. Life as an omega can be difficult, eating last and taking the brunt of aggression from the rest of the pack[15]. These individuals may chose to leave the group in search of a higher ranking position or to breed[11], and can be replaced as ranks are shuffled overtime. Older omegas are often allowed to retire, rescinding their position and being looked after by the pack[19]. Alleviating aggression is the omegas principle role, and this is often done through initiating play as a way to burn off excess negative energy[15]. As a result, long-time omegas often bear the scars of their submissive position[14].

The Pups

Importance of the alpha is rivaled only by that of the pups[14]. The fundamental purpose of the pack is the successful production of offspring, and so raising of the litter is a collaborative venture – all members contribute to their development[7]. Despite this committed involvement, pup mortality is high, with researchers citing that only roughly 30% survive their first year of life[20]. Due to this fragility, priority is given to the alphas rather than the pups, as more litters are needed to compensate for this high rate of mortality[14]. Those who survive, however, grow up with the added advantage of being surrounded by numerous care-takers and teachers. There exists a culture within wolf packs, and this is passed on to the offspring by the elders of the group. Pups learn something from each member of the pack, and attain the vital social skills required to create those powerful bonds upon which wolf societal structure relies[7].

Hera // Five years old // Doberman Pinscher // Alpha female
Dominant. Protective. Serious. Brave. Ruthless (when needed)
Hera comes from a line of drug dealers/dog fighters. At the age of four, she was seized from her home and has been in the shelter ever since. Many foster families have tried to take her in but due to her prior training, she was always brought back due to "bad behavior". Despite being taught to be a guard dog, she is fit to be a good leader as she was in charge of her previous owner's pack of dogs.

Gemini // Six years old // Great Pyrenees // Scout
Quiet. Observant. Pacifist.

Gemini comes from a family where she has never needed for anything and so imagine her surprise when she's brought to a shelter of all places to ride out the storm instead of leaving with her family. She doesn't know the first thing about pack dynamics nor really how to live without a human's help.

Verena // 2 years // Dogo Argentino//Protector

Reserved. Intense. Independent. Mature. Rude. Aggressive.

Verena and her sister were thrown around a lot as puppies. Both dogs were menaces (highly destructive and out of control) so when their first owner couldn't put up with them any longer, they were ultimately turned in to the Pound. When the Animal Shelter Verena first was in got news of the incoming storm, they decided to send the Dogo Argentino off to another one as they lacked the space, but not her sister. This left Verena alone, confused, and angry.

Ceto // 1 year// Border Collie // Scout

Insecure. Intelligent. Know-It-All. Extroverted.

Ceto is a Border Collie, and it shows in her personality. She is extremely intelligent and keen on working out any problems a dog or human might give her. She likes to show off her smarts too, which has the tendency to irk others, but being a young dog she is of course oblivious to this. At first she can be reserved with strangers, but give her some time. If she's comfortable, she can become a very playful pup. Despite this facade, the collie actually has a few insecurities. Rub her the wrong way and she might just snap, though this is rare.

Ceto, a search-and-rescue dog, got loose from her handler days before the storm was scheduled to hit. Lost and desperately searching for her owner, she wandered into the city where the Animal Shelter labeled her as a stray and brought her to safety.

Afra // 2 years // American Pit Bull Terrier mix // Beta Female

Kind. Caring. Rational. Shy.

Afra is one of the most reasonable dogs a canine can encounter. She will meet even the most aggressive dog with patience and understanding. She likes to measure all of her options before acting, and is the opposite of impulsive. Most of the times, she is caring and will help others in any way she can. But... this Pit Bull is often shy and unsure of herself, which puts her in an odd position as a Beta. Sometimes paranoia gets the best of her, causing easy decisions to be pondered over for an unnecessarily long amount of time. This is another thing that doesn't work out well for her with her role.

Despite Afra's kindness, her life before the shelter wasn't always loving and nurturing. Her last owner was unstable, and the dog often had to walk on pins and needles to avoid upsetting him and the other canine she lived with. This has lead her to develop a more easy-going nature, as to this day she keeps the mindset of 'don't rock the boat'. Like most other dogs, she was brought to the shelter before the storm hit.

Balto // 4 // Wolf-dog hybrid // Hunter for the rival pack
Serious. Temperamental. Defensive. Can be restless at times.
After getting loose from his old owner who wasn't well adapted to handling him or his breed, Balto killed a smaller dog and was sent to the dog pound to be put down. Luckily for him, the storm prevented this and was literally a life saver for him.

Cookie // 2 years // Australian Shepherd // Hunter
Energetic. Loud but knows when to be quiet. Friendly.
Cookie was born a stray and lived in the streets most her life. She was found by the animal shelter a week before the storm hit.

588399
Marlee // 3 years // Siberian Husky // Scout
Calm. Rational. Mature. Blunt.
Marlee was raised in an animal shelter from a different city. She had grown to become a mother figure to some orphaned pups in the shelter. She was transferred to this city’s animal shelter one month before the storm hit.

Are they both in the main pack? I recently added a new pack for the future of the plot and just wanted to check and see. :)

Hades // 4 years old // XL Pitbull // Protector of "Pound" pack
Serious. Guarded. Driven. Ruthless when provoked. Temperamental.
He was retrieved from a dog fighting ring at a young age and though he never saw any action, he still received the training which caused him to be labeled as "ferocious" and therefore he was sent straight to the pound. After many failed attempts at rehabilitation with other dogs, he was sentenced to be put down but like many others, he got lucky.

Shogun
(Show-Gun)

6 // German Sheppard // Alpha Male
Shogun is a very proud and firm male. He definitely has a more stern look about him. Shogun is a protective and hard working dog, he prefers to be in the heat of the action at all times. shogun isn't afraid of much, however losing a good friend is always hard. Shogun is well known for his cold appearance but once you get to know him he can be quite gentle and even kind to those he really trusts.

backstory

Shogun was born on the streets, his family were street dogs, the streets is all he knows, growing up was hard, his father was even more stern then Shogun himself. At the age of two his small pack was rounded up, only he and two others escaped the pounds clutches. Both his mother and father were taken from him, he attempted to retrieve them but his father demanded that he leave and look after the others who were able to flee. Ever since, Shogun had provided and cared for the street dogs, accepted any who needed the help and shelter, however after a few years of being betrayed and many attempts at being over thrown for the Alpha position, Shogun began to be more cold. Now with the storm coming, the pound had all hands on deck and sure enough, Shogun and his small band of street dogs were whisked into the pound where they were supposed to be "Safe"

Lobo
(Low-Bow)

// 5 // Australian Sheppard mix // Beta male / Hunter

Lobo is a much more friendly face, as opposed to Shogun. Lobo is fairly welcoming upon first meeting, he is an open book, a very good teacher and listener. Lobo is fairly good at hunting and finding the pack food. Lobo's constantly kind nature seems to compliment Shogun's grumpiness very well. Lobo is protective as well as kind. Having a very level head on himself, Lobo has a lot of patience, where as Shogun is a ticking time bomb.

Backstory

Lobo wasn't always a stray, he was actually part of a home for the first year or so of his life. He was bred by regular people however they weren't exactly the kindest of folks. Lobo's mother had gotten pregnant with his litter on accident so the human's were trying their best to accommodate all these dogs but simply couldn't. so when the pups were finally a bit to large to fit comfortably in the home, the human's began finding homes for Lobo and his siblings, fortunately all were able to find homes, aside from Lobo. The family was moving and couldn't take Lobo or his mother with them so, the family left them behind, tied in the back yard. A large tote full of dog food and a large tote of water was left for them but that wouldn't last them forever. The days bled into weeks, when Lobo understood the people weren't going to return he attempted to convince his mother to escape. but she had been so loyal to them that she truly believed they would return. Lobo was able to break free of the rope but he still didn't want to leave his mothers side. it wasn't until the pound showed up almost a month after they had been left that Lobo decided to run. His mother had no fight to give, she told Lobo to let them help but Lobo wouldn't allow strangers to touch him. Breaking free between some boards of the fence he took off, never to look back at his "Home". it wasn't to long after leaving the back yard that he found Shogun and the small band of dogs. Lobo was accepted into the pack and since then, Lobo and Shogun had become fairly close.

Amber // 2 years // scout (former regular)
eager, excitable, spunky, energetic, brave
Amber was dropped off my his doggy parents, a newlywed couple, with reluctance early on. She sees herself as a top dog and is very loud and loves to bark.

589040
Maisy // 6 months // CKCS // pup
sweet, loyal, helpful, curious, adventurous, silly
Maisy was born to a litter of six pups. Two of them died and the others were scattered by a raid.

would you prefer I made a dog for main or a dog for the rival pack? I'd like to join but I just want to make sure that the packs are balanced.

I'll probably make one for both then, I'll create my forms and submit them when I can!

592862
Yuno // 6 years // Xoloitzcuintli // Rival Pack Beta
Kind. Firm only if needed. Protective. Self-less.
Puppies are always really cute, that's why one never lasts in a shelter. It's when they grow up a dog finds himself homeless.
Good dogs find a home, Smart dogs make their own.

592865
Opal // 4 years // Greyhound // Main Pack Regular
More On The Innocent/Oblivious Side. Quiet Yet Not Shy. Her Personality Is Still Forming In My Mind Honestly.
Her human, Angie, would never leave her; until she did. How does a nationally known show dog end up here?
