Resident Babyface
(@Nikku sorry it took so long ><)

Canary Trillian has just turned fifteen, and now she fears that she'll never live to see her sixteenth birthday. She was in a career district, sure, but she had recently had a falling out with the mayor's son and the boy had decided to tell all those who were originally going to try volunteering to let her be reaped. With all the power he had, and the tesserae she had applied for (Her family decided that extra flour and grains would be cheaper for them if they just got their children to use tesserae because even if they were chosen, they'd obviously have someone volunteer) didn't help her chances of not being chosen. Her name was drawn and instead of the chorus of "I volunteer"s that usually accompany's this event, only silence met her. The escort waved her up and she had followed shakily. She was much too frightened to even take note of who the male tribute was and she was rushed into the goodbye room as if they were all running a very tight schedule.

Her mother had scolded her for breaking up with the boy so soon before the reapings. She didn't get a hug. Her twin brothers had hugged her and cried fiercely. Their family had decided that she deserved to use a family heirloom, a ring, as a token. Her father had told her she better bring it back to him alive and without a scratch. Her ex had walked in once her family had left, telling her that if she came back alive he might think of getting back together with her. What a prick.

She was miserable on the train ride. Her partner was an obvious career and he towered over her measly 4'9". She spent her time avoiding him and the too-peppy escort. Her mentor was really the only person she talked to, trying to gain information. The ride passed in a blur of being alone and sneaking away from people when they wanted to engage her in conversation.

It was the evening of the chariot ride that she finally stopped to realize that she was being sent basically to her death and she had to try not to cry in front of all these stylists who were grooming her to perfection. Their perfect goddess of the sea. She was wearing a flowing blue garment that seemed to undulate like the sea, on her blonde head was a crown made of sea glass and shells combined into a breathtaking tiara. Sand was sprinkled in her hair, on her face, shoulders, and the places her dress didn't cover. She had elegant blue makeup that made her look more like a water nymph than anything, and a delicate cape that looked like sea foam. They also strung a necklace of fish hooks across her neck, they frightened her until she was told they were dull so bs not to cut her. Before the chariot ride began, Canary was left alone were all the other tributes were slowly trickling in.

And there stood Canary, alone and frightened. She had a feeling that this is how she would be spending the last of her days as a living girl and not some cadaver in a crate.

"Darius Aurelius" the speaker called. He shrunk back out of habit. But there was no hiding, those whom he once called friends hastily pushed him forward, exuberant that they had the privilege to live another year quivering in their boots. District eleven had always appeared tightly knit on the outside, but Darius knew that really, the sympathetic looks being thrown his way as he walked down the aisle and up the stairs were really masks hiding relief. Taking his place on stage he assumed his usual position, hunched shoulders, and a downward gaze, with a large frame as his, it had proved useful many times to minimize possible intimidation. He covertly observed his fellow tribute, a girl, in her mid teens with a thick build and dark skin,in contrast to his light brown coloring.

Prior to boarding the train, he was permitted to say his goodbyes, if felt strange to him, too much time, yet not enough. His mother hugged him tightly with her strong wiry arms and tears staining his shirt "Don't you dare come back in a box" she whispered fiercely into his ear "You're my baby boy, and all I've got, save your for your Pa" Darius looked over at his father, and caught his glance. His father gave him a long look and a nod that seemed to say we'll always love you.

Kissing his mother on the cheek he promised with a defeated smile "I'll be back" which was true, but he didn't specify how; dead or alive. And with that, the peacekeepers dragged them apart and his mother was left sobbing in his father's arms.

The train ride was spent chatting aimlessly with his fellow tribute, both of them cows trying to forget that they're headed to slaughter. He had one conversation with his mentor, a tall athletically built black woman. Giving him a once over, she said "You're built well, but your carry yourself like you're weak. Try and fake it at least, honey." She then retired to her chamber and that was the last time he saw her. Her career goal should be to become a teacher, he thought sarcastically. But he did agree with her his demeanor was a serious problem, and he would have to look like a survivor to do so.

With his new goal in mind, he did his best to look strong and unwavering during the victory parade but it was hard to look intimidating when your clothes are fashioned to Ellesmere various grains and crops. Watching the replays, he felt he looked constipated. Laying back on the exquisitely soft capitol bed, he laughed and laughed until he thought about how certain death was, and only then, he started to cry.

During the chariot ride, Canary had tried to hold her chin up, gripping tightly into the oversized trident her very large partner was holding between them. She tried to look unconcerned, like a queen overlooking her peasants.

She later saw that she just looked suspicious with her narrowed seafoam coloured eyes flitting along the crowd like she assumed they were trying to kill her. In a way, it was true.

Once she was in her room, she hastily jumped into the shower. She tried to get the water's heat and pressure to mimic her faulty shower at home. It didn't work, and all she was left with was a too-hot shower and the strong scent of spiced apple cider colouring her. Canary just sat down on the shower floor and started to cry.

The following morning, training was starting. Canary was herded into a room full of other tributes, all of them looked tough and they were wielding deadly weapons. She felt the familiar rush of fear and stumbled as she walked. The brawny boy from her district, who's name was Corey, was right behind her and gave her a shove so he could go join his fellow careers. Canary stares around the room, feeling small and afraid and all alone.

She finally decides to walk further into the room, flinching slightly every time someone ran by her. Canary hugs herself, hoping none of the careers come talk to her about joining them. She wasn't prepared to say no.

The first session of training began with what Darius assumed was a many times repeated speech conveyed by the hear trainer about "using their week effectively". With that the tributes scattered, with the careers eager to show their combat oriented skills, with the non careers either lost and forlorn, or working on something that didn't actively involve decapitating dummies. Darius himself was unsure of what to do, he was starting to go back into his "please don't notice me mode".

Signing inwardly, he began to shuffle over to survival training when he noticed a short and petite girl with blond curls. Looking at the small girl he couldn't imagine why, but he wanted to be her ally beggars can't be choosers he thought. Making his way towards her, he started to have second thoughts, but he kept on walking and stopped short of her.

"Hi," he said with uncertainty, "I'm Rius, and I noticed everyone else kinda grouping up and noticed you were alone....like me. Do..." he paused for a second, trying desperately not to stutter "do you want to team up with me maybe?"

Canary was beginning to move towards where she saw wilderness survival station was. She was then approached by a large man, she instinctively moves back, assuming he was trying to walk past her. When he stopped in front of her, her eyes widen. She recognizes him as the boy from district eleven.

"Canary. Ree. I guess we are alone," she says timidly after a brief glance around the room, trying to lift her chin and sound like she wasn't frightened and nervous as all hell. His proposition of being his ally surprises her, yet she finds herself nodding to his offer anyways."Yes. Yes please. I'd really... Actually I'd really like that,"she responds, tucking a blonde curl behind an ear.

Canary can't help but find herself smiling timidly up at him, the small girl finally thinks she's found a friend in this nightmarish scenario she's been thrust into. She shoves her hands into her pockets and looks around."So... Uh... Is there anything you're really good at?" She finally asks awkwardly, eyes flitting around at the training tributes. She realizes she should offer what she can do as well."I know about poisons and things... And I can work my way around a spear and fish stuff. I'm no master though..." She trails off and bounces onto the balls of her feet and then stands flat on her feet again, she was anxious. She was standing in the middle of a room full of people who were going to try killing her, and this Rius person was the only one who didn't have a 100% chance of attempting to kill her right off.

Rius was dumbstruck when Ree asked about his skills. He supposed he was strong from working in the fields all his life, but he had no practical survival instinct or training. He was even more screwed than he thought. "I guess I'm strong from working in the fields of district eleven, and know how to handle a sickle, but I don't even know how to start a fire, or hunt"

He regarded the petite girl in front of him, whom he had thought to be only to be twelve, but he now saw she was closer to his age, maybe 15 or 16. "How about this, you teach me what you know, and I'll teach you how to fight-- I'm no master but it's better than nothing, right?" he looked at Ree with hopeful eyes, conveniently pushing away the fact that eventually, her death could save his life.

Canary smiles hopefully."Starting fires are easy. And the only hunting I've done is fishing but I doubt to be too hard," she offers with a helpless shrug. All she was thinking was that if he was so strong and big, people wouldn't want to attack them. Canary felt awfully bad that she was thinking of using Rius. He was offering her his friendship and she immediately began thinking of ways to exploit it.

Ree's timid smile grows."I can show you what I know about spears. And you can show me other stuff. And we could try picking up some new skills that would help and..." She trails off, cursing under her breath as she realizes she' seen rambling. Canary slaps a palm against her forehead lightly."so... Uh... You're big enough to be a career, why are you coming to me instead? I'd be about as useless as that crippled girl from district eleven in the arena." She begins tugging on her hair nervously, a sudden spike of anxiety rising in her chest as she realizes she might have just given him reason to leave her and join the careers.

((Gonna be gone for a day or too, school just got super stressful, but don't worry, I'll be back))
