How do people roleplay on here when the only way to contact someone is by replying to there post?

A lot of players reply to say they're interested, plan the game in private messages, and play it through on the forums. Is there anything you're confused about in particular?

You can message people directly, you just have to make at least 10 posts first.

There is the interest check thread under the looking for players tab, just look at the sites main page carefully and you'll find it

There are different sections of the site. If you look on the 1x1 partner searches, you find a thread that interests you and you can either leave a comment there stating what you're interested in, or PM the searcher ^-^
If you're interested in doing group role pays, there are two threads: one for group roleplay interest checks, so those are role plays that haven't started. The posters there are just generally checking to see how many people would actually be interested and joined once the thread/idea goes up. If you leave a comment there stating your interest, and depending on how popular the idea is, the GM will then start the official thread where you can post your character sheets, and IC posts, etc.
Then you have the thread for actual group roleplays. Be careful because not all group role plays are still accepting, so sometimes you'll have to double check with the GM, however, those are already started ideas where you can delve straight in and post your character sheet, and once you're accepted, you can start role playing.
