[div class=wideBlock ][div class=mainText]This RP will largely focus on the core species, and vampires, humans, and fairies in particular. Other species may become more important in the future of the RP but as it stands, those should be the focus. Keep in mind that the world and scope of things WILL expand as things continue.
Keep in mind that gods are largely considered to be nonexistent. As far as anyone is aware, the Brothers' genocide of the fairies was the last time anyone had close contact with a god (outside of angels) and so gods, and god-like powers, are considered legends.
Humans DO NOT know that supernatural creatures exist. For many, they can't even see things of supernatural origin until they have been directly exposed to it. (Ie. a human would not be able to see a goblin that attacked them unless they had previously been exposed to more obvious creatures, such as a fairy in humanoid form.)[/div][/div][/div]- [div class=innerBG][div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText]
• 2700 Acres
• Hawthorn is essentially a university. It accepts ages 16 (or the equivalent amongst non-human species) onwards.

• Located in Luster, Norway on the lustrafjorden, south of a town called Skjolden
• Surrounded by small farms and ranches
• More of a University, with different buildings housing different schools

• The mountain to the east, that the campus climbs up, has three tunnels that pass through it. The largest tunnel backs up to the School of Husbandry. The tunnels slope downwards and enter into a large chasm, hosting an underground forest. This is Atalanta's Paradise. At the center, trees circle the school's primary gatestone. According to the history of the school, when they cut a deal with the fairies to allow them to attend, the fairies in turn grew them a glorious forest to safely teach important lessons involving magic flora and fauna. Pathways lined with enchanted lights serve as safe passages through the Paradise, while plenty of creatures lurk in the trees and lakes and streams. Vined plants on the ceiling serve to replicate day and night, producing UV and light in the daytime and acting as stars in the night.
• Some of the more significant courses include: Thaumatary Flora and Fauna, History of Thaumatary, History of (insert any known realm), Occult Literature, Mermish (focuses on the written language). There are classes directed towards each primary species to provide them a history of their people, and an overview of their powers and how to control them. These are required.
• For example: Fairies take a Fae Thaumaturgy course, taught by fairies themselves.• While human behavior and history is also taught in a general sense as part of these courses, there is a separate Mortal Studies course that can be taken for those who plan on remaining in the human realm.
• Humans don't fully know the extent to the school’s supernatural presence. Essentially, any human touring the place or attending will only really understand that the place is a little “weird” or “eccentric,” maybe "eclectic," but otherwise must learn about everything. After all, most humans can't even see magical creatures.

[div class=picture style="background-image:url('https://i.imgur.com/3HK5hnq.png');line-height:483px;background-size:520px;"].[/div]
Thaumatary envelopes all. It is the magic that exists in everything and binds all realms together. Within thaumatary, each realm sits in the aether, the void in between. One can be sent to the aether through a rowdy gatestone. To enter this is to die a quick, though painful, death. The force of all magic moving through the aether is too much for any creature to withstand. Of the known and charted realms, there is Faeorium (fairy realm), Angarrium (angel realm), the anggaries (angel pocket-realms), Luparium (hypothetical Direwolf realm), Morsorium (human/mortal realm), and Meriarry (mermaid pocket-realm). In Morsorium, there also exists the Monster Plane, or Monstragnen. Planes can be compared to a radio station: in order to access a plane, one must be able to “tune” to the right “frequency.” If they “tune” halfway between “stations,” they can remain on their plane but see into the other one. For example, a troll could cause havoc in a human shop, without the human ever knowing. However, a fairy would be able to see the troll just fine. All magic species are preternaturally tuned to see into the monster plane, while a human must learn and be exposed to magic in order to see. The creatures that exist in the plane can freely switch their level of presence within each plane. For example, that troll could decide it has had its fun and enter the monster plane entirely, where it can not affect the mortal plane at all. The existence of planes was not known until the banshees utilized the monster plane for a home away from all other magical species. Previously, it was thought that all monsters belonged to another realm, and traveled between it and the mortal one. The monster plane is the only known plane in existence. Although others almost certainly exist, no one has been able to find the correct “frequency” to access them.
Essentially: the magic universe (referred to as thaumatary) surrounds everything, with aether serving as the empty space between realms. Realms can have smaller, directly connected realms called pocket realms. A realm can also have different planes, essentially different frequencies of the same place to live in. Planes are separated but very thinly, allowing each to influence the other. At the very center of thaumatary is the mortal realm.[/div][/div][/div]

Vampires

Creatures of the night that feed on the life essence of other humanoid creatures. They are human in their shape, and therefore skin tone ranges from dark brown to sickly, decaying blues. Most vampires appear strictly human, with only minor shifting abilities that include: retraction and extension of fangs, change of eye color to blue, purple, gold or maroon with slit pupils, lengthened, prehensile tongue with the strength to break bone, slightly elongated and pointed ears. Elder vampires may appear more monstrous and adapted to living in caves.
It is only these older vampires that can not touch sunlight, as younger and less powerful vampires can easily walk in the daylight. Vampires tend to be haughty and elitist, with only the cruel and useful being praised. Their culture revolves around an order of three High Elders who supposedly have the ability to converse with their gods directly. Their words are final, and whoever they put in charge of certain regions have equal influence, leading to a society of creatures ruled by bloodlust and obedience. Vampires are incredibly strong and usually are taught how to fight from a young age (if they are raised amongst other vampires), with better eyesight and night vision, supernatural speed and endurance, enhanced healing, and the ability to sustain themselves on small meals for extended periods of time. As they age, vampires become more adept at shirking their hunger, meaning they could potentially go weeks off a mere pint of blood. However, if a vampire waits too long to feed they can become crazed with hunger and lose any sense of sanity. Although vampires harbor their own culture, they do not have their own language. Instead, they speak a mixture of many languages, most vampires understanding at least three languages. See tha tabs above to understand the three sects of vampires. -
Vampires are the creations and servants of three primordial gods known as the Vampiric Brothers:
1. The oldest brother, named INALUSU [ee-nal-LOO-soo], watches over the BIDALMET [bee-DAHL-met]. This clan is more commonly known as the therianthropes, as in: the animal shapeshifters. They can transform into small animals, most commonly bats, rats, and cats. Although it is incredibly rare, some vampires have been known to shift into larger predators like boars, tigers, or larger dogs.
2. The middle brother, named INAETES [ee-ny-ET-es], watches over the VENATEHD [ven-AH-ted]. This clan is more commonly known as the shadow stalkers. They are practically invisible at night time, and have a similar effect when lingering in shadows.
3. The youngest brother, named URUMI [ooh-rooh-MY], watches over the KHIDOPUS [KAI-doh-pis]. This clan is more commonly known as, simply, the charmers or the seekers. They have a certain way with people: manipulative, charming, and halfway to hypnosis. Even awkward, unpleasant vampires in this clan can manipulate mortals, as it is not entirely related to what is actually being said.
-
Vampires can be born or made. Most vampires are born. In fact, it’s been incredibly uncommon for a vampire to be made for the past two centuries. Created vampires are chosen very strictly, as they must adhere to the vampires’ idea of a pure bloodline, not tainting with certain undesirable traits, such as being ugly or having a disability. Still, created vampires experience intense prejudices from their peers, and many spend their entire lives trying to prove themselves.
• There are small pockets of vampires that were cast out of their society because of undesirable traits. They are spotted around the world, and live in the under-underworld of supernatural society. Oftentimes, if a “lame” vampire (as those cast out for undesirable traits are called, no matter the trait) is seen again in common vampire society, they will be killed. There are, of course, vampires who disagree with this way of doing things. Younger vampires usually disagree with their elders on the topic of bloodlines, but follow along because of the power elders possess, of the influential, physical, and magical variety.
-
Vampires hold grudges, and harbor two rivalries in particular:
• Werewolves: vampires consider them disease ridden pests, and generally cite their inability to control themselves during the full moon. Werewolves, obviously, dislike the vampires because, well… aren’t they the same? Both are largely ruled by animalistic instinct.
• Fairies: The only other species who poses a genuine threat to the vampires’ reign over the human realm. They wish to overthrow the vampires and spread their dominion, plotting some way to kill off the Brothers.

Fairies live in an entirely separate realm from the humans. Fairies aren’t too common in the human realm, but they are considered the most superstitious of the various species due to their belief in the Brothers’ existence. They can come in many shapes and sizes, but can shift into the general appearance of a human. A fairy can be recognized by their ethereal beauty, lightly glowing or shimmering skin (which can be nearly any color, although changes to a less notable tone when shifted) and easy ability to manipulate others, even other supernatural species. They throw amazing parties. You might die of exhaustion at one, but all for the fun, right? In the past, the fairies went to war with the vampires. Although the number of fairies overwhelmed the vampires, the Brothers entered the battle and slaughtered nearly every fairy present. That is, nearly the entirety of the species was wiped out within a few seconds. That was the last time anyone recorded actually seeing the Brothers, and a large reason as to why the fairies hate vampires. They want to kill the Brothers and take over the human realm.
-
The seelie court (also known as the Summer Court) is, in most cases, considered the “good” fairies. The unseelie (also known as the Winter Court) are then the “bad” fairies. In reality, all fairies are capable of good and evil. The Seelie court, however, is generally known to be more friendly to other creatures, forget their sorrows quickly, and repay gifts and favors from humans in kind. The Unseelie court, on the other hand, hold grudges, will hurt others for little to no reason, and hardly see most other creatures as anything more than flies or, if they take a fancy to one, a potential pet. The rule of the fairies’ realm has always passed between these two ideologies, which were eventually labelled. Important changes occurred around the time of the War. The Unseelie court had been vying for power, ultimately garnering enough to launch a campaign into the mortal realm. They figured that if they ruled most of the fairy realm, and the human realm, they would easily be able to claim the rest of the power. Ultimately, the fairies who took part in this campaign were almost entirely wiped out, many seelie fairies also caught in the crossfire. What remained of the Seelie court attempted to maintain order, but the general populations’ desire for revenge and their hatred for vampires eventually won out, placing the Unseelie court in rule for eons. Since they have held on for so long, most fairies now lean towards the Unseelie mindset.

Angels

Their natural form can range from fleshy, living geometric shapes that burn with light to something almost human looking, but too many wings and too many eyes or too many faces. They tend to look decently frightening, and often will warn people not to be afraid. Thankfully, many of them can also transform into a human shape. However, even in this form, they can have oddities. It's common for an angel to have multiple sets of eyes, or to glow or have too many sets of limbs. They will not always retain wings in this form. It all just kind of depends. Now, angels aren't all good and pure. They are a very loyal kind of people, and fierce warriors. “Fight me” could most definitely be their species motto. They are rare in the human realm, as most of them prefer to stay in their own realm, not to mention it's highly discouraged to deal with mortals. They are, by the way, immortal. A person can not become an angel, as angels merely come into existence. They are tasked with keeping all of the realms “in order,” whatever that means to these beings and whatever god or pantheon that they serve. Angels are, in a way, merely fleshy blank slates for a god to make into whatever thing they need to carry out their wishes.

Almost identical to their counterparts, demons are a subspecies of angels. This is primarily a title given to those who have separated themselves from servitude of their god or pantheon, or have been cast out. As a result, their form becomes corrupted. They can be accepted back into servitude, although it rarely occurs under the same god as before. They do not enjoy the same physical might or manipulation of the reality around them the same as angels do. They can also be killed by any item enchanted for the job, rather than specific angel-killing items. Their “soul” (consciousness) can not be stored by a god to be reborn.

Werewolves

Pretty standard creatures. A bite or scratch will spread the disease, although it’s incredibly dangerous with a high mortality rate. Werewolves are stronger, faster and have better senses and reflexes than the average human. They are slightly weaker than vampires, but have an unbeatable sense of smell. They have no inherent organization, although packs will form between some. The trained werewolf will be able to shift whenever they please, and have a small amount of control over their actions on a full moon. A new or untrained werewolf will find themselves particularly sensitive and easily angered. Intense emotion can cause a transformation to begin. On a full moon, an untrained wolf is incredibly dangerous, blacking out and losing their humanity to an insatiable rage. The werewolves of this world have two forms. Their first and most common form is a disturbing mix between human and wolf, with gangly, elongated limbs, thick, short claws, and a thin layer of hair. The face of a werewolf pushes forward slightly, pointed teeth filling an unusually large mouth. The ears will also elongate. This form of werewolf could almost be compared some kind of monkey or ape. In this form, they are also particularly adept climbers and tend to walk on their knuckles. The full moon form takes on more beast-like traits, with the usual look of a wolf, except two legs and two arms and hands. Werewolves are significantly more numerous than vampires but the average gang of werewolves would not be able to take down a small group of vampires (what with their “elite” club). Not to mention that most werewolves don't care about vampires much. The hostility largely comes form the vampires' side.

Witches
- [div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText][div class=picture style="background-image:url('https://68.media.tumblr.com/76afcc8ff2344a2535755bc73548d881/tumblr_o6txf9lA1k1uoiovto1_1280.png');"].[/div]Witches appear entirely human, but share the blood of a human and a supernatural species, most often angels, demons or werewolves. Vampires can not conceive a child with a human, and fairies rarely impregnate anyone. Witch actually refers to anyone who shares blood with a supernatural species, regardless of gender or whether or not they practice magic. They are capable of very powerful magic, beyond that of a practicing full-blooded human, and are the only species capable of tapping into every form of magic. Most species can only use the magic of their own kind. Witches are surprisingly common, but many are unaware of their blood or do not practice magic. They are especially prized because of their ability to influence reality and enchant objects. If you need to kill an angel, a witch might just have the solution. They are easily the most laidback and least homicidal species on campus. Witches do not have a ruling force over their entire species, although some witches will choose to enter covens to learn more and protect themselves.

[div class=innerBG][div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText]
These are various other magical or supernatural beings that, for one reason or another, are not considered powers of importance.
Mermaids: While they are as intelligent and civilized as the other main species, they are separated due to their ocean dwelling nature. They mostly remain neutral in affairs, enjoying their peaceful, blissful lives on the ocean floor and in their own pocket-realm, directly tied to the human’s. Their culture is largely focused around hunting and technological innovation. They are arguably the most intelligent species, aside from the the humans. Legends say that early merpeople shared their knowledge with humans, to the betterment of both. They now resent the humans for their pollution of the oceans, though they mostly consider humans to be very “cute.” Mermaids have been known to mate with humans, resulting in a hybrid that can only live amongst mermaids in the ocean. When it comes to magic, mermaids have water based, obviously. Some also have hypnotic voices, the sirens of legend. Sirens are almost entirely female, and are usually trained as warriors. While a mermaid can not usually shift in order to gain access to the land, folklore states that legs can be gifted by witches or fairies, though one should always beware the latter. Plus, not many mermaids want to adventure the human lands.
• A small sect of mermaids known as the Inossimes [ee-noss-eh-maise] (knowledgeable ones) serve as the curators of the stones. Taken from a young age if they show signs of “the sight” (a particular resonance with the energies of the magical universe), they are taken to the Inossimes. Could be described as similar to the monks of Tibet, in terms of their whole vibe. They are the only ones able to refine a gatestone. It is taken to the deepest parts of the ocean, but beyond that, no one knows what happens. This ritual allows a gatestone to better connect to the various realms.
Banshees; A species comparable to the mermaids, as they are just as civilized as any of the main species, but prefer to remain out of conflicts. Banshees are created rather than born. A banshee will raise a human after their death to join their ranks, always female. As their origins spawn from the fairy realm, they are considered a fae species, though they remain in the mortal realm. Banshees sing or wail to foretell death, and seem to have a unique connection to the afterlife as they were already deceased at one point. Banshees are a very small species, consisting of around only 100 or so members. The most recorded banshees at a single time was 300. At the moment, banshees are divided into four groups, labelled after each cardinal direction. Each group is led by a queen. The southern banshees possess an enchanted artifact of great power: a celtic harp which when played, can cast a curse of death upon whoever hears it. The banshee queens are known to gather as a council every now and again to discuss the current situation and politics of the supernatural world. Because of their knowledge of impending death and doom, they can be a very useful for someone planning a battle. Banshees have been known to take in female witches abandoned by all else.
Goblins: A species of fae that come in all shapes and sizes, so long as that shape is grotesque and the size is small. They are a type of fae, even more mischievous and genuinely evil. They can range from mischievous troublemakers, to genuinely dangerous creatures that terrorize children and kill travelers. They tend to be only a few feet tall, always shorter than humans, with grotesque appearance and, in some cases, possess magical abilities. Goblins share in some of the hex magic that the fairies possess. While they are not animals, they do not have the same level of intelligence as the other major species. Nonetheless, they have waged war on the fairies before, though entirely unsuccessful. Fairy mythology speaks of their realm long before the formation of the courts, and how goblins once ruled the land. In that time, it was all rock and heat, steam billowing from geysers. The realm was untamed and impure, a land for beasts. The fairies brought with them order and beauty, which the goblins cowered from. Now they linger in dark, damp and gross places, dreaming of their old home. Goblins possess a unique ability to tear small gates between realms, allowing them to travel freely between any which they desire to. This allows them to be a pest to nearly all species. However, it could also make a goblin a useful tool if one wanted to infiltrate another realm.
Direwolf: Sometimes also known as hellhounds, these beasts are said to be the ancestors of werewolves. They are massive, wolf-like creatures, with stubby-fingered “hands” and short tusks protruding from their mouths. They are said to be highly intelligent and spiritual animals, tapping into some ancient and unknowable power for their strength and magic. Their magic appears more as an insight into the actions of others, making them fearsome foes, or their ability to seemingly teleport short distances. There are some accounts that, in the dark of night, their mouth, eyes, nose, and claws will glow with burning flames, the ancient power that dwells within them. They are neither good nor bad, and can serve as loyal companions to those with will strong enough to tame them. They’re extremely elusive, supposedly have their own realm they live in.
• Direwolves are the mothers of werewolves. Supposedly, a human man was cursed to spend their life as a direwolf. They fell in love with a true direwolf and when the two mated, their pups had the unique ability to shift between man and wolf. This was how the curse also ruined the life of all the man’s children, by trapping them between two worlds where they fit in neither. These were the first werewolves, primlykos, or primlyko (singular). Although werewolves are a fairly new species with little mythos or culture, there are those who worship and serve the primlykos similar to the vampires and the brothers. However, people are more willing to believe in the existence of the evolutionary ancestors of the werewolves.
Kelpie: Beautiful women, gorgeous stallions, or terrifying monsters. These creatures manifest as horses by streams, rivers, or lakes. If mounted, the individual is not able to dismount, and the kelpie drags their prey into the water and devours it. They are also known to transform into beautiful young men or women, luring anyone interested with the same fate. A kelpie’s true, monster form is usually long and serpent-like, with a tentacled “mane,” each tentacle ending in a small, beaked mouth (think of a squid). They are extremely strong, squeezing their prey and drowning it before quickly devouring with its many mouths. As a horse, their identifying trait is that their hooves are reversed, and they have sticky hide. Kelpies appear to manifest with a complete bridle, which is the only way to control them, although it is very difficult.
Qilin: Dragon-like creatures with fish scales, manes that defy gravity and always flow upwards, long, flowing whiskers, and the ability to light their body on fire. They can have either a pair of antlers, or a single horn, and are peaceful creatures despite their fearsome appearance. They are able to fly and breath flames, terrifying to fight if they decide someone is impure or wishes to cause harm. Their appearance is taken as a good omen, manifesting only in the domain of kind rulers. They are extremely rare and elusive.
Ahuizotl: These beasts are about the size of a large dog, with waterproof fur that clumps into spikes. It has hands on its front two legs, and a third on the end of its tail. Ahuizotl lurk in deep water and grab anyone who travels into deep water carelessly. They are drowned and the ahuizotl will feast on their eyes, teeth and nails. The head would be left to float to the surface. They are most commonly found in the Americas, where legend says that those drowned by it are destined to live in Paradise in the afterlife.
Trolls: A creature native to the realm of the fae, but continue to prosper outside of it. Roughly human or ape-like in shape, trolls are particularly ugly, furred creatures that lurk in the dark. They will eat almost anything, but love the flesh of humans. They can smell the blood of “pure” individuals (the definition differing for each species). If they touch daylight, they turn to stone.
Giants: Massive human-looking beasts who are incredibly dumb, though to be feared for their prowess as warriors. In ancient europe, those who bested giants were to be worshipped and basked in gifts. They are much rather than what they used to be.
• Cyclops: even larger than your usual giant, characterized by their single eye. Cyclops are much more intelligent than their brethren, and are often skilled craftsmen or blacksmiths. They usually live together in more civilized villages than that of the giants. Cyclops can be befriended and reasoned with.
Enenra: Entirely peaceful smoke creatures that appear when a bonfire is lit. Because they appear humanoid, they have been mistaken for grim reapers of sorts. They dissapear when the smoke dissipates.
Pixiu: A winged lion creature that represents prosperity and good fortune. A fearsome foe, however, if one makes it that.
Cadejo: Found in Central America, these dog-like creatures come in two forms. A black cadejo, complete with glowing read eyes, will kill people or lure them into making horrible decisions. The white cadejo, however, will protect travelers or drunks or vagabonds from evil.
Bulgae: Dogs with coats of fire that chase the sun and moon. The legend says that when they bite the celestial bodies, it is the cause of eclipses. Bulgae glow and burn as they chase their prey, and are very loyal and mostly friendly. Though not frequently seen, they can be tamed as companions, generally the mark of someone with a good heart and pure intentions.
Satyr: These are half man-half goat creatures that roam forests and plains. They are intelligent creatures, though they avoid civilized society. They love to party, drink, etc. They are associated with fertility, and specialize in certain forms of fertility and life-inducing magic. Led by a chief, satyrs do not often join in disagreements. Satyrs possess an enchanted thyrsus. Despite similarities to fae creatures, satyrs are not considered so because they original from the mortal realm. Satyrs are the creations and servants of Dionysus, though that history has been long forgotten and ignored.[/div][/div][/div]
[div class=innerBG][div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText]In this world, magic is scientifically referred to as Thaumaturgy, which all stems from the universe of thaumatary that surrounds everything. It is, of course, most commonly referred to simply as magic. Magic is divided into categories based on those that can use it, or merely by generally understood terms.
Fae or Fairy Magic: This is the magic that fairies and fae creatures use. It mainly involves nature-based magics and hexes. They can also enchant items, but only with their forms of magic. Such as enchanting a sword that causes any cut by it to float until they die (hex), or an enchanted ring that can be used to bring plants to life. Fairies are all born able to perform magical feats from birth, and do not require verbal cues to use it. However, not every fae creature can access every fae ability. For example, goblins are the only (known) creatures able to tear their own gates between realms without the use of stones. If an ability has been specified for a certain creature, only that creature can use it. Fairies usually grow more powerful over time.
Elemental Magic: A basic form of magic that nearly all magical creatures may be able to tap into. It involves utilizing the natural elements that occur in all of thaumatary, usually represented as Fire, Earth, Air and Water. To refer to a creature as an elemental being usually means that it singularly or almost singularly uses one or more elements, rather than other magics. Most creatures that use elemental magic have the energy of it infused within their being, so using this magic is natural to them.
Angel Magic: This form of magic can be hard to pin down. As angels themselves can vary greatly, so can their magic. An angels powers may change, as they can be gifted different sets of skills by the god they serve to better suit whatever task they were handed. Angels also have access to a fifth element, referred to as “Light.” It is, in essence, the very being and structure of angels, the thing which allows them to be as powerful as they are. It could be called the key that lets them access the pools of energy they call gods. Demons lose their ability to utilize Light. Most angels possess at least some common abilities: shapeshifting, Light, flight, dream-walking, small miracles. Angels do not gain power with age or knowledge. Their power is dictated by the magics their god gifts to them. Angels do not require verbal cues to use their magic.
Mermaid Magic: A largely unstudied and unknowable form of magic. Mermaids are, of course, innate users of water magic, and can also communicate and affect sea life in a way that can only be called spiritual. Mermaids can also enchant objects, such as gatestones. They have been known to be the creators of powerful enchanted weapons, using their advantageous connection to thaumatary to create such objects. Mermaid magic includes their natural ability to survive in the ocean at unimaginable depths. Some individuals are born as sirens, those with hypnotic, immeasurably beautiful singing voices that they can use to manipulate people. Mermaids can gain power with age and knowledge, and do not require verbal cues to use their magic.
Banshee Magic: Banshees are the only creatures known to be able to sense death. They, similar to the mermaids, have an innate connection to thaumatary, though in a different way. Their physical magic is largely sonic based. Their screams and wails can be powerful weapons. They can also teleport, disappearing in a puff of smoke and the sound of wings flapping. Some banshees are even known to shapeshift, though they are limited to keeping their appearance mostly similar to their original state. For example, a banshee may be a beautiful young maiden, and be able to shapeshift into an ugly old crone, or a grotesque form of themselves with overgrown teeth and nails and blood pouring from their eyes. They can enchant things, usually gifted with dark powers. Banshees only have a set amount of power, that usually does not change. They do not need verbal cues to perform their magic.
Witch Magic: Witches are a unique case. They can use any and all forms of magic, so long as they learn how to. This is what makes them so desirable if one needs something: they're a one stop shop. Witches usually use some sort of vessel, such as a staff or wand or otherwise, to help channel their power. They also often need verbal cues to aid learning, especially in earlier stages. Witches gain more power as they learn, though it is not necessarily dictated by age.
• Witches can enchant weapons and even random items to kill otherwise unkillable beings. Angels can not be killed by anything except weapons forged by angels themselves (which often will not work for anyone who does not possess Light), not easily given out to others, or with weapons enchanted with angel’s magic by a witch. Witches can also enchant weapons that can kill gods. At least, supposedly.
Gemstone Magic: A wholly unique form of magic. Because the magic is inherent within the stones themselves, this magic is not barred to only one species.
-
Gemstones, Gatestones and More
- [div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText]Gatestone: The primary vessel used to travel between realms. Cut large, at least 6ft in diameter, and roughly circular in shape. Although it will function at any angle, usually placed parallel to the ground for easiest access. Properly refined gatestones will appear to have a frosted face, with highly reflective symbols cutting through this finish. It is most often written in the language of the ocean dwellers, though words that do not exist. Although a gatestone can be used unrefined, it is considered a bad idea because of the unpredictable nature of gatestones. This can be remedied with a pedestal stone, though not entirely. Petalite, or castorlite as the translucent variety is used, is the most commonly mined gemstone for this purpose. Petalite is a spiritual stone that connects its users to other realms, and can be cleaned in large chunks, is less particular than other stones, and the most reliable. Malachite is a favorite amongst angel strongholds because it will shatter if it senses danger looming. Moonstone may also be used, but its more unstable than petalite.
Pedestal Stone: The base that holds a gatestone up. It is not necessary for a gatestone to function, but it can help ground a particularly gemstone so it works better, or it just looks nice. Although it is usually a pedestal, this stone can actually be nearly anything so long as it connects with the gatestone when it activates. Frames are also carved. A pedestal stone does not require refining, though most users like theirs to be carved with ornate designs relating to their species’ culture. The most commonly used and most effective pedestal stone is cassiterite.
Keystone: These are the stones that allow a user to activate the gatestone, and also specify where they want to go. They are usually cut into an oblong octahedron (or however many faces the lapidarist decides), heavier to one side, with softer though still pronounced edges. Keystones are used to draw symbols correlating to gate in another realm. The symbol will produce a dim glow as it is being drawn, and brighter once it is completed and drawn correctly.
• Fairy realm: Aventurine. There used to be many gates in this expansive realm. After the War, all others were destroyed, leaving only one on the battlefield. The only other way in is by way of goblin.[/div][/div]
• Angel realm: Celestite. Another realm with only one (publicly known) gate. Essentially, it opens to the waiting room and secretary desk of the angels. Although the exact layout and gates of this realm is unknown to other species, it is known that many pocket realms branch off of the main one, each for the separate gods in different pantheons that an angel might serve.
• Angels possess a certain technology that only they are able to use. It is essentially a miniature gatestone that can rapidly shift in size, allowing angels to pass between realms mostly freely. However, it requires great power to be used, which is why they only ever travel when it is “absolutely dire.”• Mermaid realm: Larimar. This gate actually opens up in the mermaid settlement nearest to the entrance to their pocket-realm. Because it is not an entirely detached realm, it cannot be travelled into.
• Human realm: Hematite. A ton of gates, largely unknown by humanity.

The universe of Thaumatary has a long and complicated history, full of many conflicting accounts. Here you will find a collection of known history, and legends whose truth is debated.
WIP[/div][/div][/div]
[div class=innerBG][div class=wideBlock][div class=mainText]The fairies have been plotting for so long now, seeking a weapon that they can kill a god with. So far, their luck has been nonexistent. Since Hawthorn's inception, and the subsequent admittance of fairies, agents have been sent to scope out the potential. After all, the school often had famous scholars give lectures or visit campus, sometimes even bringing a collection of ancient artifacts with them. Not to mention the library, full of rare and long forgotten books. And if a witch powerful enough to enchant a weapon for them comes along, the fairies want to know as soon as possible.
So they've waited, quietly, patiently, for an opportunity. And it seems one has arisen. Skofnung is a legendary blade, sharper and harder than any other. Most uniquely, it contained the spirits of its original wielder's guards. When cut by the blade, the wound would continuously spread until the opponent had been completely torn apart. Its final resting place was unknown, lost to time and the earth. Or at least that was everyone thought. There is a rumor that states the blade rests somewhere within or around the school. If the fairies manage to find it and kill a god, all hell will break loose.[/div][/div][/div]

Can/do humans attend the school?
Yes! Humans attend Hawthorn Academy, though most are not aware of its supernatural nature. Human students learn to turn a blind eye and ignore odd occurrences. Don't stay out at night (especially on full moons), beware the "witch club" because they might curse you, and never EVER ask questions.
Can I RP a god?
At this point in the RP, no. Unless you can give me a good case or plot associated with such a character.
How do I know which god my angel serves?
You may choose a god from any time, culture, pantheon, etc. so long as you can do so with respect to that culture. However, you can also make up a god if you would like. You can characterize the god and rp them (minimally) as an NPC, however they can not be played as a major character.
Do witches have any special abilities associated with their parents (ie. the child of an angel who can sense other angels)?
Witches do not have any special abilities. They are, for all intents and purposes, human. However, a witch could have an inclination towards Light magic as the child of an angel, purely because it comes easiest to them or they were taught by their parent from a young age. In that instance, a witch may be able to sense another angel because they are more trained in that magic. But no witch has an instant unique ability if they have no form of training at all.
What is the time period of this RP?
Hawthorn Academy takes place in modern times, so it is the year 2018.

Oh, hi! If you don't mind, could I ask you a question? Besides the one I just asked, I mean.
What are the relations between the species? Do they have their own little countries in their own little realms? Does iron cause horrible burns and whatnot?thebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
ahh i really need to make a diagram because im awful at explaining haha
think of each realm as its own country! so most species are pretty ok with each other, except the vampires and fairies because there's a lot of bad blood there. and the vampires don't like the werewolves because, they're the most modern species and the vampires consider them something like a plague on the supernatural world. Like they're overgrown rats. meanwhile most werewolves just wanna live their lives and could not care less.
hope that cleared things up a bit!! this page isn't quite done yet so i'll be adding a lot more about the history of the universe and such!cuddlefish
Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!
if that's alright with you, could i suggest new ideas here? for species and magic and whatnot.
worldbuilding is always a lot of work lol but it's still loads of fun.thebigbadwolfy

Sure my dude c:
Give me those good good ideascuddlefish
Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!
because of the general supernaturalness of the roleplay, i thought that there should be spells and spirits and magic and whatnot. some more creatures could do the setting good, though i don't think they're strictly necessary.
elementals are creatures that personify the four classical elements.
gnomes -> beings of earth,
undines -> beings of water
sylphs -> beings of air
salamanders -> beings of fire
while this technically isn't a part of their canon, i thought there should be more to their shtick than "i am a fire dude and i do fire things." maybe they were granted their abilities by some mystical deity analogue that told them to guard some magical artifact. i'm not really sure about this part. also who doesn't want garden gnomes in their spooky magic setting lol
and then there is magic. i'd prefer for it to not be waving sticks around and chanting dog latin, but more like the occultic runes and rituals. magic is everywhere, but in its natural form, it's just like air! you don't really notice it's there until it's gone. every species can do magic but it's mostly an innate talent and some species naturally are better than others. or vice versa. the actual rituals and runes and potion stuff are up to you because i'm terrible at rhyming
anyways here are your good good ideas of subjective goodness i should probably spoiler these lolthebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
don't worry there's definitely a lot more creatures!! I've just added the ones that attend the school for now
I'll be added a section for the "lesser" species in a bit
As for magic, I wanted to keep it more of a soft magic system, where not everything is super specified, but there are certain forms of magic that could be more "scientific" or more "occult." The way witches perform magic is especially occult, as they can't just naturally use magic in the same way other species can. They require certain aids and suchEldarkon
Still writing my story
What about angels? what part do they play in the story? can a student at hawthorn be an angel?cuddlefish
Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!
since thebigbadwolfy had angels in the list, i can presume that some students, however rare, are angels. they did say "I've just added the ones that attend the school for now" two posts above this one, after all.
i don't know about you but i think that a lot of students would be scared poopless, pardon my crassness.thebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
yes! If they're up right now, they can attend the school
There will be another tab for other species: those are the ones that do not attend (at least not usually)
As in the normal humans? Oh absolutely. Good thing they basically can't see the weird things
People disappear at the school and it's kind of just accepted. Students quickly learn you don't stay out too late, you avoid full moons, the witch club might actually have witches, and if anything weird happens, you just don't ask questionscuddlefish
Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!
do the clothes that supernatural beings might be wearing disappear with them? like, can human beings just fail to perceive their clothes altogether?
human: *sees floating hat in the distance*
human: "haha nothing weird here"thebigbadwolfy

see this is why i need other people to write things for me lol clearly did not explain a lot of this enough
essentially, a human mind can not fathom supernatural things as being real. So a lot of the time when they see something out of the ordinary, their mind just refuses to see it. That's why exposure to it (Ie going to school with a bunch of freaks) allows one to become accustomed to and see things. So basically the more normal something looks, the more a human sees it. So if a fairy looked like their normal fairy self, every aspect of them would be invisible. But if the fairy shifted to their "human" form, then a human would easily be able to see them. However, they would notice certain oddities, like how they glow and have a weird, hypnotizing beauty.HPBadgerBoi

Hello, I have a question about the witches?thebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
Yes ask awayJade Emperor
Hiro
Say you have a child of, say, a demon, or an angel, will that child have any other abilities other than a high control over magic? Like, enhanced physical abilities, maybe able to sense deities or other angels if born of an angel, etc etcthebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
no, not really. They might have a small inclination towards the magic that they share blood with, but there aren't large differentiations no matter the parents. I suppose you could apply an inclination towards the magic of angels to being able to sense them, but it wouldn't be a very obvious sensation.
There is one exception (as far as anyone is aware but maybe that'll change ~oooOOOooH~) which is that the child of a mermaid and a human must live in mermaid waters.Jade Emperor
Hiro
Wait there are mermaids??? o-0thebigbadwolfy
just a stranger
Yeah lol. There's a lot of stuff I gotta put up still
They're considered "lesser species" largely because they stay out of things, stick to themselves and, u know.
Live in the water. So they don't hold the same level of power, though they're still very important in the grand scheme of thingsJade Emperor

Ah, alrightFol

so if i want my character to be an elemental (focusing on snow/ice), what species would they be? witch? fairy?myst.erion

is it alright if we use real faceclaims? or would you prefer drawings?thebigbadwolfy
