Fantasy Grim and Grimmer

The small town of Croak may seem like a typical—albeit spooky—small town, but those who live there know otherwise. Tourists have a tendency to avoid it due to the various signs and businesses referencing death, even if it only seems like dark humor on the citizens’ part. In truth, that is for the best, since none stay long enough to realize that there are dark powers constantly at work.

Grim Reapers, or Grims for short, are people who have the responsibility of finding the souls of those who are dead and taking them to the afterlife. This task, called Culling, is a vital part of the world and keeps it in balance. Without them there would be no way for the souls to reach the afterlife and achieve the peace they deserve (or don’t deserve.)

Due to the portal to the afterlife being located in Croak, it is impossible to conceive children in the town. In order to get more Grims and townspeople the current mayor goes out and finds specific kids to bring back. Typically they are children who have had rough lives and have no one that will miss them, although sometimes there are exceptions.

Once a person is brought to Croak, they will be introduced to the portal to the afterlife. The power it imbues them with will appear in the form of a scythe. The blade’s color usually represents that person’s personality and can be quite literally any solid shade imaginable. These tools are used to rip through the fabric of space and travel to areas where someone has died. The Grim can then Cull the soul by tapping it with their finger and guiding into a vessel created out of specialized spider threads for safe storage. Once their route is done they will once again use their scythe to travel to Croak and deliver the soul to the afterlife.

While there are a few more specifics to the procedure, that is the main idea. It has been done for many, many years and under the new mayor, Lara Burch, Croak has successfully continued this incredible task.

However, a different kind of darkness lies on the horizon. While it is a Grim’s job to Cull dead souls, they are never under any circumstances allowed to use their abilities to kill people. Soon after a bus load of new children arrive in Croak, someone begins to break this law, and it is up to them to stop the ensuing massacre.

Important Side Characters:_____________

Name: Lara Burch

Age: 25

Gender: Female

Appearance:
2469464_1330239518820.66res_250_300.jpg

Color of Scythe: Indigo

Personality: Being the mayor of Croak, she is charismatic and intelligent. One of her best aspects is her ability to make people want to listen, as her words are always well thought out in order to appeal to the townsfolk. She welcomes any Grim with open arms, although she can be a little overprotective of her brother at times. She always does everything she can to protect her town, even if it means making hard decisions.

Background: Lara was born to two happy parents and spoiled for the first decade of her life. She was overjoyed when she gained a little brother and gladly taught him everything she could. However, when she was hardly eleven her mother suddenly came home and accused her husband of cheating. No amount of pleading could stop her from storming out, and she never came back. Lara and Nolan’s dad sank into a depression and became a deadbeat, virtually useless to either of them. Without a job to support his new drinking habit, he left all of the work to his children. One day Lara simply became fed up with this way of life and followed her mom’s lead; leaving without a word. Of course, she took Nolan with her, although she was quickly finding that it was difficult to support the both of them with so little money. Mort found them on the streets and asked if she would like to live a new life. As tempting as the offer was, she made sure to ask if Nolan could come as well. Mort initially hesitated—it typically wasn’t tolerated for young children to be raised in a dark place such as Croak—but then gave in and took them both to the small town.

Lara quickly became a favorite of the townspeople and her charisma shined. With the help of Zak and Mary, both of whom befriended her during their training as a Grim, encouraged her to become the mayor of Croak. She did just that and, despite her young age, many consider her to be one of the best mayors Croak has ever had.

____________________________________________

Name: Zak Cohen

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Appearance:
anime-boy-61804695668_zpsc91a0180.png

Color of Scythe: Maroon

Personality: Most citizens consider Zak to be just as antisocial as the spiders he looks over. His job includes taking care of the special arachnids, which seems to be one of the few tasks he doesn’t mind doing. He despises taking orders from others and can get irritated rather easily, especially with rookies. There are rumors going around that he has a soft spot for his coworker Mary, something that he will always vehemently deny.

Background: Dropped off at an orphanage as an infant, Zak has never known true parents. Due to both bad luck and growing attitude, he rarely ever stayed with a family for longer than three months. This naturally led him to being a loner, believing that he should never become close to anyone since they would always leave him eventually. Finally, at the age of fourteen he got fed up with it all and decided to run away from his current foster home. After nearly a week on his own Mort found him and offered him a place in the town of Croak.

Color of Scythe: Carnation Pink

Personality: Mary is a very kind and welcoming person. Her very presence has a way of helping people feel at ease. Never rude or uncouth, she is a sort of motherly figure for many despite her young age. However she has a tendency to be oblivious to others’ ulterior motives or feelings, which could get her hurt. Even if that does happen she always tries to look on the bright side and believe that everyone has their reasons. When not at her desk she can usually be found talking with Zak.

Her job includes watching over the portal to the afterlife and telling the Grims where to find dead souls.

Background: She lived a fairly normal life until she turned thirteen, the year her parents separated. It was not an unhappy occurrence it her parents still remained friends, so there was no need for her to hold bitterness. Her father moved to another state and promised that he would visit as much as possible. However, soon after her mother contracted a serious illness that quickly left her bedridden. While Mary’s father did try to visit often, the distance that needed to be traveled was great and he had a strenuous job, leaving the young girl to take care of her mother mostly on her own. Unfortunately, when she was eighteen her mother’s illness finally succeeded in taking her life. Distraught, Mary ended up wandering the streets for several days, unable to face the place where her parent had died, where she was eventually found by Mort.

OOC: I sincerely apologize, but I would appreciate it if everyone waited a little longer before posting. I'd like to give a little more time for people to sign up.

“Nolan, wake up.” Lara gently shook her younger brother’s shoulder. The teenager groaned in response, groggy from sleep and not wanting to leave the warmth of his bed. After several more shakes, however, he finally gave up and rolled over.

“Can’t I just sleep in? It’s not like I’m new here.” Nolan insisted, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

Lara smiled but shook her head. “No, everyone is going, new or not. Besides, a refresher course never hurt anybody. Be in front of the bank in an hour.” With that, she left their house and walked through town. Many of the townspeople happily waved to their mayor as she headed to The Crypt where all of the future and current Grims slept. In the past few days several teenagers had arrived in town, just as she expected. Each of them had been drawn to Croak one way or another and today she was going to tell them why.

After walking into the small lobby, Lara headed over to where the clerk sat at the desk. The bored middle aged woman—the only reason they had a clerk in the first place was to redirect tourists or occasionally give out announcements—glanced up. Lara told her to go around to all of the rooms, wake everyone up, and tell them to meet in front of the bank. With a sigh, the clerk rose and went into the hallways to do as she was told. Lara then left and went to the bank herself, going over some papers as she waited.

Henry had just finished guiding a few souls to the otherside as he went over to a bench and sat down looking up at the sky wondering when he would have something to call his own. He sighed and went to go get some food as he went into the resturant and ordered some eggs. He was suppose to be in the crypt to sleep but couldnt. He had a job to do and he was going to be the best. He heard they were suppose to meet at the bank so he quickly finished his meal and headed over there with a slight scowl on his face.

Samantha had been in Croak for a grand total of seven days. Since then she had figured out three things. One: These people were really nice. Two: These people were friendly to everyone. Three: These people were hiding something, and she intended to find out what. As a result of thing one and two she had somehow procured a place to stay, and apparently, so had all of the other teenagers staying there. She was sitting in her bed writing in her journal about what these people were hiding could be when she heard a loud knock on the door. She shoved hr journal under her pillow and feigned sleep. "Five more minutes please!"

He sighed loudly and tried to look as normal as humanly possible as he slipped a cigarette in his mouth and lit it. He sighed waiting for lana and the others to get to the meeting. He'd been here long enough why in the hell did he even need to be here.

Bram leaned against the Ghost Gum Tree and ran his thumb against his scythe, a pensive frown on his face. He had been there for years and yet he always was put off by new comers. Why? He didn't know. Maybe he was anxious about how they were going to behave around here. Some kids really weren't cut out for this. And he meant attitude wise. If you weren't going to put actual effort into your job and take your role seriously, then shove your scythe were the sun don't shine and leave it to people who actually cared about this!

Bram sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Alright Bram, pull it together, He thought to himself. He got to his feet and put away his scythe, heading towards the Bank.

After several minutes of just sitting in bed, Nolan sighed and stretched. As much as he would rather sleep, he knew that his sister wouldn't be happy if he didn't show up in time. Standing and walking over to his closet, he picked out the first shirt and jeans he saw and changed. Once he was dressed he had a quick breakfast and then started walking toward the bank. To his exasperation, he noticed that not many people were there yet; it figures that Lara would wake him up early. His sister wasn't anywhere he could see, so he supposed that she must be inside. He shifted on one foot and glanced around again, lazily nodding toward the others in greeting.

By the time Bram arrived at the Bank, he was still early. He groaned in exasperation before noticing Nolan. Walking up to him, he plastered on a grin and crossed his arms.

"Hey, cheer up Sunshine, it isn't that early," Bram teased, knowing that this disgruntled teen preferred to sleep in till ungodly hours. Then again, Bram pretty much rose with the sun out of habit, so this wasn't early for him.

"Not that early? What are you, a bird?" Nolan replied. Although his words held no bite, he had no idea why someone would actually like being up at this time of the day, especially for something as pointless as this. Unfortunately his sister was one of the few people in Croak who wasn't afraid to order him around, so he had had no choice.

"Caaaw," Bram replied with a grin, mocking a bird call. His early rising was actually a safety precaution from living with his father and living on the streets. Not that he'd ever admit that... He shook his head free of thought and peered at the Bank. Honestly, he wasn't surprised that they were some of the first few there.

Nolan huffed in amusement, a small smile forming on his face. "Should have guessed." he muttered. Noticing the other look back at the Bank, he glanced over as well before remembering something. "Lara told me last night that she roped Zak and Mary into the training for today. Be prepared; Zak's gonna be ticked." he informed. Zak, who normally only had to take care of the spider vault, was far less than fond of rookies and when in a bad mood (which he no doubt would be) had zero patience.

One minute Lilith was dreaming about bloody killings and dead bodies, the next she's woken up by the stupid human who served as a clerk for the Crypt, which apparently was like a Grim Inn. Not that not have anything against clerks... actually she does, but that's not the point. You just don't wake up a 17 year old dreaming about blood, unless you expect to get your head chopped off. The clerk woman managed to order her to go to the Bank without a scratch. That lucky b****.

Lazily, and with no concern at all Lilith shoved on a tee, jeans, converse, you know, the whole works. After getting ready she quickly grabbed her red and black Scythe, and took her time to get to the bank. Those bastards could wait for her if they really wanted her there. Yes she was new, a few weeks to be exact, but it wasn't like she didn't know anything, or knew to much to go to any meeting at all.

As Lilith entered the bank, she let out an exasperated laugh. Of course, the mayors sweet heart, and the overly flirtatious experienced hotty. Well, things could be worse.

"Oh joy," Bram drawled sarcastically. He noted that Lilith had entered the bank and grinned at her grumpy expression. Her threw his arms wide as if offering a hug.

"Hey! Lili! Why the long face?!" He called.

Lilith scowled and past him with no hug, giving off her attitude of distaste, and with a little bit of flirtatious sarcastic humour.

"Because the first thing I see is your ugly face." She reprimanded Bram, and turned to Nolan. "That stupid hag woke me up so early. Why is that?" She asked, wanting to know why in the world she was deprived of er beauty sleep so early in the morning.

"And why a bank? This is the most dull place i've ...." She spoke, but stopped herself. She's been in must worse conditions by far. And best not upset the mayors sweet heart. It was because of her that Lilith was able to take refuge in Croak. Best not ruin it now.

"The bar would have sufficed" She muttered, leaving it at that.

"Oh darling you wound me deeply," Bram cooed, clutching his shirt over his heart. He then chuckled, hearing her mention the bar. " 'Ey, take it easy sweetheart. It's only 8."

"You know how a bunch of new people have showed up in the past few days? Everyone's getting trained today because of it, new or not." Nolan explained calmly. Her rude speech glanced off of him; he categorized it as similar to Zak's attitude and nothing to get worked up over. "This bank has a lot more than you think." he said, not bothering to elaborate.

Bram yawned. He honestly didn't new to show up, seeing as he'd been there since he was 14, but he made an appearance anyway to tease the newbies and lend a hand to the people training them. He noted Edgar Allen Poe in the corner, building a fort from pillows, and sighed.

"Who cares where this happens? So long as it gets done," Bram said, lacing his fingers behind his neck.

She sighed frustratedly. Then automatically laughed at Bram's remark. "I wasn't referring to the beer, Mate. And banks always smell funny. Like old people." She answered, not willing to elaborate any further. In all truth, she did want the Yoricks drink, which although contained no alcohal, still gave her, a Grimm, the same effect. She wanted to wind down from her rude wake up call this morning. And tea, nor coffee ever really worked for her anyway. And she never liked Banks, because well... she'd been arrested a few times trying to rob them.

With Nolan's remark she frowned. "Training? S***." She muttered. She was lazy, that was true, but when it comes to killing, or hurting something that's hurt her in any way, she'll love it. Wether everyone knew it or not, she didn't care. Inflicting pain was something she learned to do at an early age, curtsy of her parents.

"Elaborate on the training part." She asked, wanting to know more about why she, a Grimm of 3 weeks, was ordered to train with newbs.

Samantha got up and got dresses. The woman who had "woken her up" had told her to go to the bank, so she put on her best kind smile, left and walked down to the bank, nodding a hello to everyone she passed.

"We'll go through the normal tour of the Bank and Zak and Mary will show the rookies how to Cull souls." Nolan answered simply. "We're probably here just for assistance."

"Fantastic," Bram yawned. Man he needed coffee. He had been up since 4 for no apparent reason and his eyes were half-lidded with exhaustion. "I'm gonna grab a coffee or something, anyone want anything?"

When she reached her destination she saw that there were three other people there already. She had seen them around town in the few days she had been here, so she felt reasonably comfortable talking to them. She took a deep breath and walked over them. Okay if you come off as shy you'll seem nicer, less threatening so add in some stutters. She thought to herself. "Uh- Hello!" She added in a carefully timed shy smile "Am I late or early?"
