The city of Gotham was founded in 1635 by Jon Logerquist, a Norwegian mercenary. It was later taken by the British and was the site of a major battle during the American Revolutionary War. During that period, stories of underground occult dealings began to emerge, but their credibility is still shrouded in mystery.
The history of modern Gotham begins in the late 19th century, namely in 1881 with the construction of the so-called Gates of Gotham. This all happened not long after colonel Nathan Cobblepot successfully defended the city during the American Civil War. It was one of Nathan's descendants, Theodore Cobblepot, along with Alan Wayne and Edward Elliot, that built the Gates, the three bridges connecting the once unconsolidated city into one, unified location. Cooblepot, Wayne and Elliot soon became known as the Founding Fathers of Gotham City, each of them serving individual mayoral mandates in succession.

Soon, though, a feud emerged between the Founding Fathers, mainly because both Elliot and Cobblepot yearned for more power, while Wayne fought for the democratic ideals he thought were the only ones worth protecting. Cobblepot soon ostracized himself, while Elliot was found guilty of criminal wrongdoings and send to Blackgate Penitentiary, where he eventually died, his family name disgraced. The crisis of power allowed small-time crooks and bandits to form gangs and soon, with the support of Theodore Cobblepot, five gangs emerged and took control over Gotham. Alan Wayne was removed from power and his family faced the same fate as the Elliots; the Wayne family moved to a small island just of the coast of Gotham, where they built their manor and lived a quiet life, away from politics.

Meanwhile, Cobblepot soon lost control of the gangs and at the turn of the century, Gotham plunged into chaos. Cobblepot fled Gotham, who had by then become both a playground and a battlefield for the criminals that ruled the city, either directly or through political marionettes. The tradition of criminals ruling Gotham, of people living in fear and without hope survived all the tests of history and has become a vivid oil on canvas that still terrifies the once noble city, whose nobility disappeared during one bad day.

GEOGRAPHY

Gotham City Metropolitan area lies on an archipelago and is a major economic center within the United States. Its important industries include manufacturing; shipping; finance; fine arts, represented by its numerous museums, galleries, and jewelers; and the production of giant novelty props. In addition to its commercial seaport, it also supports a naval shipyard. Gotham is divided into three large regions, the latter being subdivided into districts.

Uptown is located in the smallest island north of Gotham City Midtown and Downtown. It is surrounded by four rivers: North River, East River, Queens River and River Merchant. Its East End District is the least developed part of Gotham and the center of the city's criminal activity; the infamous Crime Alley, the murder location of Thomas and Martha Wayne, is located in East End, along with several headquarters of crime families and smaller criminals. Ironically, the headquarters of Gotham's Special Crimes Unit (SCU) is also located in East End; the latter is also home to Daggett Enterprises, one of Gotham's most important companies. Several other companies are located in Uptown's Otisburg District, including, but not limited to Stagg Enterprises, GothCorp, S.T.A.R. Labs and Ace Chemicals; all of those companies are rumored to be involved in shady dealings with the local criminals. The last district is South Channel Island, a small island surrounded by Uptown's four rivers.

Midtown is located in the island center of Gotham City. It is surrounded by four rivers: North is the River Merchant, South is the Gotham River, East is the East River and West is Queens River. Closely connected with Gotham's Downtown, Midtown is one of the city's main centers, notable for being the location of several major buildings and institutions, such as the Gotham Tower, Wayne Tower, Gotham International Airport, Thomas and Martha Wayne International Airport, Gotham Pier and the Prewitt Building. It consists of only two districts; the Robinson Park District which houses Gotham's largest park, and The Narrows, an island in the middle of the Gotham River, situated between Midtown District and Downtown Gotham City. The Narrows houses Arkham Asylum, the infamous psychiatric hospital; Gotham Academy used to be located on the island, before being relocated to a more luxurious location in Downtown Gotham. Its old building was merged with the Asylum.

Downtown is located in the largest island south of Gotham City Midtown and Uptown; it borders the Atlantic Ocean. Downtown is the true center of Gotham's story, the principal location of all business dealings and the city's legal and financial core. Gotham's own World Financial Center, Statue of Justice, Wall Street, William Street, and the Gotham City Centers are all located in Downtown Gotham, along with other notable locations such as the Gotham Academy and the Cobblepot's Iceberg Lounge and Iceberg Hotel. It is also the location of Gotham's foundation, today present within the Old Gotham District, the home of the GCPD and the City Hall. The financial center is located within the Diamond District, the home of both Wayne Enterprises Headquarters and the Iceberg Lounge; The Gotham Gazette is also located within the district. Burnley District is home to both the new Gotham Academy and Gotham University, along with the two largest hospitals - Mercy General and Elliot Memorial. China Basin and South Hinkley are two smaller districts, along with the Blackgate Isle District, which is home to Blackgate Penitentiary, Gotham's main prison building.

The outskirts of Gotham City are home to Wayne Manor, as well as Bristol County and The Palisades.

  Wayne Manor is the personal residence of Bruce Wayne, a large mansion on the outskirts of Gotham City; it is maintained by the Wayne family's butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Wayne Manor has been with the Wayne family since the late 19th century, when Alan Wayne was removed from power and built the manor on the island as a safe place for him and his family. Wayne Manor's grounds include a surrounding gate around the perimeter with a larger front gate at the main entrance. A large cave is located beneath the mansion. The grounds also includes a large hill and there is also an underground river system that is large enough to accommodate docking space.

  The Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) is the police department that services Gotham City. It's headquarters are located in Old Gotham, but it has precincts scattered around the whole city. Although it has several divisions and units, due to the nature of crime in Gotham, the most prominent one is the Homicide Division, currently headed by detectives Gordon and Bullock. Other important organizational units are Special Crimes Unit (SCU), Major Crimes Unit (MCU) and the Quick Response Team (QRT); the S.W.A.T. division, lead by Howard Branden. Although somewhat ''saved'' by the idealism of Jim Gordon, the public has little to no faith in the GCPD because of its persistent corruption and ties with the criminal underworld.

  The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, typically called Arkham Asylum or simply Arkham, is a psychiatric hospital that serves as the main psychiatric hospital for the Gotham City area, housing patients who are considered criminally insane. It's original name as Arkham Hospital. Serving as a Gotham City psychiatric hospital, Arkham Asylum has a long and brutal history, beginning when its own architect, Dr. Amadeus Arkham, became mentally unwell and hacked his workers to death with an axe. He was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the same asylum he had been building.
  
  Arkham Asylum has a poor security record and high recidivism rate, at least with regard to the high profile cases—patients have been known to escape without much trouble—and those who are considered to no longer be mentally unwell and discharged tend to re-offend. Furthermore, several staff members, including its founder, Dr. Amadeus Arkham, and his nephew, director Dr. Jeremiah Arkham, have become mentally unwell. In addition, prisoners with unusual medical conditions that prevent them from staying in a regular prison are housed in Arkham. Arkham, with special conditions required for certain patients or inmates being a regularity rather than an exception, is seen by authorities to be an ideal location under certain circumstances. Still, the Asylum is currently closed down for new patients until further notice.

  [Jutsify]Blackgate Penitentiary is the main prison in Gotham City, established via the merger of the original Blackgate Penitentiary and Gotham State Penitentiary during the late 1990s. It is located on a small island in Gotham Bay, which is part of Gotham City. Initially, Blackgate Prison (later to be known as Blackgate Penitentiary) operated separately from Gotham Prison (later known as Gotham State Penitentiary). Both prisons are located in Gotham and while Blackgate is the main correctional facility today, Gotham State Penitentiary was the primary correctional facility up until the early 1990s. In the early 1990s, Blackgate Prison was condemned by Amnesty International and forced to shut down. When the prison eventually re-opened almost a decade later, it was officially known as "Blackgate Penitentiary". Because of its secure location on a secluded island, Blackgate began to take prominence over Gotham State, until the latter became virtually unused, finally merging with Blackgate into a single facility.[/Justify]

  Wayne Enterprises, Inc., also known as WayneCorp, is a diversified multinational conglomerate, owned by Bruce Wayne. Wayne Enterprises is a company based out of Gotham City and headquartered in Wayne Tower. Wayne Enterprises and the Wayne Foundation are largely run by Bruce Wayne's business manager Lucius Fox.
  
  Founded by merchant ancestors of the Wayne family in the 18th century as a merchant house, it is among the oldest companies in the Gotham City. The company began as a trading business started by brothers Judge Solomon Wayne and Joshua Simon Wayne. With the revenue generated, Judge Wayne essentially built a small "city" for his company with the help of Cyrus Pinkney; the "city" will eventually become one of Gotham's centers. Judge Wayne's son and heir, Alan Wayne, officially made it a corporate company in the 19th century. Alan Wayne, who was Bruce Wayne's great-great-grandfather, erected Wayne Shipping, Wayne Chemical, and Wayne Manufacturing. All these companies were energized by the world's Industrial Revolution; more branches were created and diversified while others dwindled and were discarded. Along the years, it has developed from a merchant house to a large multinational conglomerate company in the world; exceeding LexCorp, Stagg Enterprises, and Ferris Aircraft.
  
  Wayne Tower is the headquarters of Wayne Enterprises. Also called "Old Wayne Tower" and "Wayne Industries Headquarters"; it was built in 1888 by Alan Wayne. After its construction, the tower was the tallest building in Gotham City. Built as a symbol to welcome all of those who enter the city, Wayne Tower has 13 gargoyles or "guardians", which Alan Wayne insisted they be called, welcome visitors for each of the 13 entry points into the city. The five guardians on the first tier watch the original five gateways into Gotham, the three bridges and two tunnels. Higher up, the seven guardians watch the seven train lines that converge at Union Station below the tower's base. A 13th guardian was added in 1930 and sits in the middle of the tower. This last one, added by Henry Wayne, watches the airport and cannot be seen by elevator or from the deck. At the top of the tower is an observation deck which Alan Wayne asserted be open to the public for free every weekend. It has double bonded laminated float glass for windows that are crystal-quality, weatherproof, and unbreakable.

  The Iceberg Lounge is a Gotham's elite nightclub, owned and run by the Oswald Cobblepot, as the main location for his large family business. Along with the 5-star Iceberg Hotel, located in the vicinity of the nightclub, the Iceberg Lounge is center of Cobblepot's operations and his main source of income. The Iceberg Lounge is the hottest place in town according to Gotham's jaded in crowd.
  
  The two-story, 12,800-square-foot restaurant and lounge included a large pool for pet seals and penguins in the central dining area, an iceberg-like sculpture in the pool, a ship-themed dance floor and polar décor. A tuxedoed jazz band on the sculpture is often seen playing tunes. Cobblepot has his own private dining area, upstairs near the bar where he can oversee everything. Some of the nightclub's more secret areas include Cobblepot's office and armory, and some of the Iceberg Lounge's hidden back rooms, which serve various purposes.

  • Dagget Enrerprises is a economical and pharmaceutical construction company opposing Wayne Enterprises that specializes in various industrial aspects, epidemical research and real estate development. It is located in East End. Run by the shady Roland Dagget, the company has been under investigation several times, but never charges. It is believed that Daggett used his connections within the criminal underworld to ''persuade'' the authorities that the company's illicit dealings are, in fact, legal and beneficial.

  • Stagg Enterprises is a multinational science company in Otisburg that specializes in various nation-wide industrial aspects and new, innovative methods in the fields of engineering, chemistry and genetics. Stagg Industries had various subsidiaries; Stagg Mining Company, Stagg Cruise Lines, and Stagg Robotics. The company was founded by billionaire Simon Stagg, who also runs it as its CEO. Although mostly beneficial for Gotham, several allegations of inhumane treatment and illegal experimenting have emerged throughout the years, but no formal charges were ever made.

  • Ace Chemicals is a chemical company in Otisburg, located next to the Monarch Playing Cards card company. Initially a subsidiary of Kain Chemicals, the company owned by the parents of Martha Wayne, it was sold to Apex Chemixals, which in turn became Ace Chemicals. Several accusations against the company have been made, mostly in relation with its chemical waste bins, but every investigation resulted in no evidence being found.

  • GothCorp is an economical and pharmaceutical company rivaled by Wayne Enterprises, also located in Otisburg. The company is run by Ferris Boyle, who labeled it as "The People's Company". It is widely believed that it survived the investigations of corruption, malpractice and illegal experiments only through Boyle's wealth and underworld connections.

  Gotham City Hall is the chief administrative building of Gotham. As such, it is the main workplace for members of the Gotham City Council inlcuding the Mayor of Gotham. Although a supposed symbol of democracy and political idealism, City Hall has, throughout the years, mostly been a facade for Machiavellian scheming and more sophisticated crime. The city officials have been accused of corruption, ties with the criminal underworld and a complete disrespect for the citizens of Gotham city. The building has been relocated several times; the new building is located in City Hall District within Old Gotham and was built at the beginning of the 21st century.

  The Solomon Wayne Courthouse is Gotham's largest courthouse, located in Old Gotham, near City Hall. It was built in the 19th century and expanded several times throughout its history. It was named in honor of Judge Solomon Wayne, a famous ancestor of Bruce Wayne. Gotham District Court has its seat and offices there, along with the District Attorney's office.

  Gotham Cathedral is a monolithic cathedral located in Gotham City. More 800 feet tall, it is the world's tallest cathedral. It was once intended to be the spiritual center of Gotham City, the cathedral fell into ruin as the city itself fell into corruption and decay. With stone gargoyles and tolling bells that watched over Gotham from its towers; it was designed conceptually to keep evil at bay, the cathedral easily dwarfed the surrounding buildings of Gotham. A small graveyard is attached to the Cathedral. For years, stories of cult dealings associated with the mysterious Sacred Order of Saint Dumas, a saint buried near Gotham Cathedral, have been associated with the building.

  Crime Alley is a small side street located in East End, Uptown Gotham. A dangerous, crime-infested area, Crime Alley was formerly known as Park Row and is located just around the corner of the old Park Row Theater. Small-time criminals, street thugs and bullies often operate here, praying on their unsuspecting prey. Today, Crime Alley is most (in)famous for being the location of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne, roughly 20 years earlier. A small, somewhat hidden memorial site, the Wayne Memorial, is located in the street, as a memory of a tragic event that plunged Gotham into even deeper chaos; the murder case is still unsolved. Crime Alley borders The Bowery, commonly known as Gotham's worst neighborhood. Dr. Leslie Thompkins has a clinic located in Crime Alley.
