History:
In the year 2513 aliens attacked Earth. They sent down Machine lifeforms to invade the planet. Machine lifeforms, or simply Machines as they are now called, are similar to robots but require no power source. They have remarkable AI which allows them to preserve their bodies and collaborate in order to achieve their goal of killing humans and destroying manmade infrastructure. The aliens seemed to have taken a hands-off approach to their invasion, and seemed to have disappeared after deploying the Machines on Earth.

By 3077, society is crumbling, the human population is dwindling, and the Machines have created factories and facilities where they can mass produce more of their own kind. It is apparent that humanity is losing this war. The few remaining humans were gathered and transported to the moon, where a colony has been constructed to act as a safehouse until the Earth is reclaimed. YoRHa, a military force of humans who are deployed to Earth with the purpose of combatting the Machine invaders and reclaim the planet, is created in 3080.

Present Day:
The current year is 3519, and the tides have not quite turned. Humanity has made some headway on their mission, creating resistance camps on the planet that farm materials to send to the Lunar Colony. Strangely, the hostility of Machines has decreased. Most do not attack unless provoked and simply spend their time staring at their surroundings and slowly move about. There have been reports of Machines mimicking human speech, although the statements heard were said to be random words or incoherent statements.

Earth:
Mother Nature has reclaimed the planet. Flora and fauna have grown to gigantic proportions of their size during the time of human civilization. Giant trees reach out to the sky and their large branches break through the ruins of buildings while their roots tear apart asphalt roads. Wildlife has also returned to a primal state, with giant boars and moose standing taller than humans even on all fours roam the abandoned streets of city ruins. Terrain has changed as well, and where once were lush, grassy plains is now an ocean of sand. The change in geography has caused mountain ranges to become flatlands or valleys, and cities which were well above sea level are now almost completely submerged.

Factories for Machine production are still operational, although to a much lesser degree than previously. Human resistance camps have been set up across the planet in order to farm material to send to the Lunar Colony and restart some sort of civilization on Earth. They are far and few in between, and are inhabited by soldiers and workers as opposed to families of settlers.

The Lunar Colony:
The vast majority of remaining humans reside here. There are various residential, commercial, and entertainment districts. On the peripheries are military bases where current soldiers train. Though the population is miniscule compared to the population of Earth pre-invasion, the Lunar Colony is just as diverse. It is similar in size and population to New York City, or most other major metropolitan areas which were on Earth pre-invasion.

The government is what some would consider communist today. Everyone is given enough to have their basic needs met, but is also required to contribute to society. Everyone is given a roof over their head, enough food to live comfortably, and even some luxuries to enjoy. No job is officially valued more than another, save for the military. All able-bodied individuals are pushed towards joining YoRHa upon adulthood from a young age, although the choice is still every individual's upon reaching maturity. Despite that, social pressures and cultural conditioning more often than not leads to them proudly enlisting, and those who are honorably discharged or retire from YoRHa are given better quality housing and amenities as opposed to the normal population. They reside in what are known as veterans' districts, which are recognized by their relative affluence in comparison to other residential districts.

Those who cannot enlist or do not wish to can work in various other fields, which were also available pre-invasion. Workers in food service, retail, caretaking, sanitation, and other essential services are considered just as valuable and important as thespians such as writers, actors, artists, etc., as art and media is believed to be important for human well-being.

Cultural norms also condition people to view those in the military/veterans in higher regard than other civilians. Conflict among people has drastically dropped due to the common enemy of all humanity. Racism, sexism, homophobia, and any other sort of discrimination is almost non-existent. Although it is rarely necessary, the government is harsh on any sort of discrimination or harmful prejudices reported anywhere besides in the privacy of people's homes. The only notable instance of the government needing to suppress public thought was when a cult who believed the aliens invading was 'God's will' and humans should not try to reclaim it. Aside from that, the government allows all sorts of public opinion and criticism. Another remarkable event was when people protested humans first returning to Earth to gather material in fear of humanity once again destroying Earth. The government worked with these activists to put into legislation sustainable methods of harvesting material.

YoRHa:
Although soldiers officially enlist at 18, basic training starts for all able-bodied children at 13 as part of their schooling. YoRHa units are almost immediately deployed to Earth after joining. Each YoRHa unit has a callsign which consists of a number and their designation. This callsign is theirs until they retire, upon which it is assigned to a new soldier.

Designations include:
- Combat, identified by C. An example of a combat unit's call sign is 3C. Combat units are the prime force in YoRHa missions. They
- Harvest, identified by H. An example of a harvest unit's call sign is 2H. Harvest units are the ones who live in and manage the colonies on Earth and send back material to the Lunar Colony. Although they have combat training, their skills are primarily in prospecting, mining, etc.
- Operator, identified by O. An example of a operator unit's call sign is 12O. Operator units provide mission information and intel to combat units while they are on the field. Each operator unit typically has one combat until who they work with until the end of either's career (through retirement or death). These units stay on the military bases in the Lunar Colony and communicate with their combat unit remotely.
- Scout, identified by S. An example of a scout unit's call sign is 32S. Scout units covertly gather information on the field for current and future missions. Their information is primarily used by operator units to prepare essential intel for combat units later, but scout units are often also sent out with combat units on missions to search ahead and provide more up to date information than any monitoring systems on the Lunar Colony can provide.

Weaponry:
Due to the material requirements of bullets and ammunition, guns and other long-ranged weapons of the pre-invasion era have become obsolete. Instead, pods, which are small devices which fly alongside their assigned YoRHa unit, come with sharpshooting capabilities. They were invented after the method of powering of the Machines was discovered: the creation of energy from the molecules around them. This same self-powering method was used to not only power the pods, but allow them to expel bursts of energy as bullets, beams, and various other ways depending on the uploaded interface.

Pods are susceptible to hacking though, so YoRHa units also carry other weapons. These come in the form of swords, axes, spears, etc. Pods also allow for a unit to communicate with other units on the field or in the Lunar Colony or send and receive information. Pods are voice activated and voice responsive, similar to Siri and Alexa from the pre-invasion era.

YoRHa units are also given flight units which have the capability to travel from the moon to Earth in mere minutes. They have the same technology as pods which allow them to shoot bullets of energy, as well as have the ability to transform into more of a mech. In this mode, along with the bullets, they also have the ability to expel energy in the form of blades for more close-ranged combat. There are larger flight-capable vessels which are used to transport gathered material to the Lunar Colony and small groups of YoRHa units to and from the moon.

Cybernetic Enhancements:
Soldiers and civilians have the option to get cybernetic enhancements. Although they are more freely given to soldiers, they are mostly reserved for those who are living with physical disabilities. If someone isn't born able-bodied or becomes handicapped through their day to day life, the government provides the option for them to get cybernetic enhancements free of charge on the condition that they serve in the military. Those who would still be unfit for service after receiving the enhancement are still given the option and have the procedure fully covered.

Notably, transgender individuals are also offered fully-covered gender affirmation surgeries by the government on the condition they include some cybernetic enhancements and serve in the military. This has led to a high percentage of transgender YoRHa units. If a transperson is still unfit to serve with the cybernetic enhancements, they are still offered the regular gender affirmation surgeries.
