This would take place in the year 2125 AD, in an alternate reality where the Roman Empire never fell, and kept growing to a point where they discover the New World, and eventually conquer the entire Earth. The details, such as ongoing rebellions and acts of terrorism against the Emperor are largely irrelevant, since you're just a slave forced into the gladiatorial games. The best part about it is; you're forced into the Worldwide competition, which basically means almost certain death. Neato Burrito.
Every 4th year, this competition is held, and all slavers offer up their best gladiators to the nearest city's 2-week qualifying rounds, where only one gladiator comes out alive. Then, that gladiator proceeds to the regional rounds, where, once again, one single gladiator comes out alive. Finally, the Worldwide finals in Rome, in the world's largest and oldest gladiatorial fight center, the Colosseum itself.
Well, at least you get your freedom if you win; the emperor himself buys you your freedom from your slaver, and enlists you as one of his own Praetorian Guard.
But gladiator combat isn't what it used to be; grenades, Gatling guns, and the occasional jet-packs are just a few of the things the grace the fields of the gladiatorial games.
So go out there, get fried by that guy's plasmarator, and earn that freedom!
