Realistic or Modern Eldritch Horrors: Arkham

Shireling

A Servant of King and Country
Based on the Cthulhu Mythos of H.P. Lovecraft.

The town of Arkham, Massachusetts is a perpetually-decaying place, filled with old buildings with sagging gamble roofs and dark corridors to haunted chambers. Since its founding in 1779 by German mercenaries, the history of Arkham has been blighted by massacres, disappearances, and strange goings-on. The townsfolk are a shadowy breed, and many hide unconscionable secrets.

But now it is the present day, and while the outside world progresses rapidly, Arkham remains largely untouched by the winds of change. Its Georgian architecture remains prominent, cell phone service and cable television are largely unheard of, computers are a novelty. The town is very much an island of anachronism, continuing to molder and decay forever. Things, however, are changing in Arkham. The disappearances of children, once rare, are now occurring at a rate of one every six months. Farm animals have gone missing, family pets have been found drained of blood. Local authorities are perplexed by the mystery, and the occult historians at the Miskatonic University hold their breaths in fear.

In this role-playing adventure, you take on the roll of an Arkhamite or a traveller to Arkham during the fall and winter of 2015. During this time, a secret cult is laboring in the dark, wild hills about Arkham to summon their master, an Elder Being that threatens to lay waste to all Mankind. The RP will involve light combat, suspense, and lots of detective work.

Keep in mind, if you plan to play a native Arkhamite, they typically wear older-styled, formal clothing (dark suits for men, long dresses for women), they will not be familiar with most technology invented before 1950, and will most likely have Puritan beliefs or attitudes. A sensitive topic to cover, most Arkhamites are racists and consider Native Americans and Blacks to be savages. This is not meant to offend, but to give depth to the Arkhamite characters and stay true to Lovecraft's original creation. If some of the players cannot be grown up about this, I can remove this element from the canon.

If you plan on playing a non-Arkhamite, you are not limited any in your character creation, but must have some reason for visiting Arkham. Some examples might be a surveyor going to look at land for a new house in a nearby village, a detective sent from Boston to assist the Arkham PD in their investigations, or an inheritor coming to collect land or possessions from a deceased relative in Arkham.

If you show promise as a player and writer, you may be asked to collaborate with me on plot points. The knowledge you gain doing so may not bleed over into your character.

Following that, I will not intentionally try to kill-off characters that are player-owned, but don't take that as an excuse to run into gunfire or wrestle a bear, you will die. Use common sense.

Finally, I hope to have a character ensemble of at least five but no more than eight characters. Spots are dished out on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you behave like an idiot, I will ban you. If you fail to consistently deliver posts with good quality grammar, punctuation, and of a decent length, I will ban you. I understand life gets in the way sometimes, but an absence of longer than five days will result in removal of the character. If you know you'll be away for longer than that due to unforeseen circumstances or necessities of family or business, work with me and I'll find a plausible way to sideline your character so you can continue when you come back.

This RP has a definite end-point. When the end of the plot is reached, the story will be concluded. Sequels may be in the works if all goes well.

Finally, a map of Arkham is attached below. Any point listed on the map is considered a point of interest. Major points of interest include the Town Square, Miskatonic University, Riverwalk (Water St, North Arkham), and Hangman's Hill (listed as "graveyard" on the map).
