The Absent-Minded Daydreamer

  • CHARACTER SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

Welcome to the character creation thread! Before we begin, please read the following rules:

    1. No (unreasonably) overpowered/'flawless' characters. While yes, compared to the average person, a 'Champion' would be exceedingly powerful, it's not fun playing as an untouchable person who can never be hurt.
    2. Please wait until I post my character's sheet before you post yours. It's not a cardinal sin or anything, it's just a preference of mine.
    3. Everyone in the world of Aphola has the ability to use magic - people just choose to only use the magic they're naturally good at.
    4. Finally, if you're unsure about whether an idea for your character is allowed, or if you'd like something clarified, please PM me!

If needed, I'll add additional character creation rules in the future.

Name: Kean Raghnall
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Appearance: Kean has curly light brown hair that reaches to the middle of his neck. For the most part, he does the bare minimum to clean up, but he’ll make an effort if he’s going somewhere important. He also has dark green eyes that can take on a slight brown coloring in certain lighting conditions. Finally, he possesses a body type that makes it abundantly clear that he’s not exactly suited to performing extreme physical actions - he’s healthy, but he needs to remember that eating and exercising regularly is something that people do.
In terms of clothing, he doesn’t give much thought to his outfit - he usually just throws on whatever he first grabs out of his closet. Somehow, this works out well for him - most of his shirts/jackets are either green or blue, and his pants are all various shades of grey. He also keeps his weapon of choice - a simple sword - on a belt, sheathed on his left hip.
Personality: He is a rather kind and earnest young man. However, while he’s rather good at helping out his friends, he’s not very good at caring for himself.
Magic Affinity: Enchantment - Runes
Preferred Weapon: Sword
Affiliated God: God of Past
Strengths: Extremely good memory, Ability to properly use various runes
Weaknesses: Taking care of himself, Extreme acts of physical exertion

Champion Skill: Projected Memory - When Kean focuses on a specific event/moment of time (whether described verbally or in writing), he can cause his surroundings to take on the appearance/certain physical characteristics of where this moment occurred. This effect lasts for as long as the event happened, after which everything returns to its original state.

Backstory: Kean is an aspiring scholar whose passion for learning managed to land him a spot in Taenora Academy. He’s somewhat infamous for his tendency to show up to random study groups/research organizations, only to quickly have his attention grabbed by a new subject and pursue that instead. As a result of his eclectic interests both prior and during his Academy years, he’s become decently acquainted with many people, some of whom he now views as his close friends.
At the moment, thanks to a rather unfortunate incident involving a Water-User, some fur-covered monsters, the library, and some dubious claims of ‘science’, Kean is currently suspended from the Academy.
Additional Notes:
  • Identifies as Panromantic Asexual
  • Once a topic that he’s interested in comes up, he will usually go on a very long and passionate speech about said topic. He will not realize he’s doing this unless someone tells him to please stop (usually one of his friends).
  • Before learning about the truth of the world, Kean held an average amount of respect for the gods - while he was mildly curious about the extent of their individual abilities, he ultimately didn’t think about it too much and chose to focus on other topics.
  • Post-revelation, his respect has considerably lessened. While he’s still curious about their powers, he’s also rather invested in trying to figure out why this cycle exists in the first place.

Name: Elian Terrel

Gender: Male

Age: 21

Appearance: With pale ivory skin and grey eyes overshadowed by bags, Elian's tired appearance is in direct juxtaposition to his profession. His blonde, shoulder-length hair is often tied at the bottom, leaving a tail of hair brushing the collar of his brown leather waistcoat. A satchel completes the ensemble, weathered and full of the various herbs required for a more natural method of healing. While not unhealthy (sleep deprivation aside), Elian is no warrior; his physique is slim with little muscle to boast.

Personality: Elian is, by all accounts, a stubborn, cantankerous young lad with the irritability of a man several years his senior; his caustic sarcasm is rivaled only by his dexterous skill as an healer. Underneath his grumpy demeanor, however, is a genuine desire to help others, hence his chosen profession.

Magic Affinity: Practical - Growth (of plants exclusively)

Preferred Weapon: None; as an apothecary, Elian shuns violence in all of its forms. To him, it is always better to heal than to hurt.

Affiliated God: God of Sacrifice

Strengths:
  • Apothecary - Through years of rigorous training, Elian has become quite adept with medical practices. Creating various natural remedies, diagnosing ailments, and treating diseases come with ease.
  • Quick Reactor - Those in the medical field must have quick hands and even quicker minds; Elian's medical training has honed both his reflexes and his wit.
Weaknesses:
  • Feats of Strength - Heavy lifting is, to put it bluntly, not Elian's forte...
  • Emotional Intuition - Elian is emotionally maladroit at the best of times; years of solitude spent devoted to work have left him struggling to connect with others on any meaningful level, and he can come across as distant or uncaring because of it.
  • General Combat - Contrary to what his temper may lead one to believe, Elian is a pacifist. This weakness stems not from ineptitude but from unwillingness, an absolute refusal to engage in violence out of matters of principle.
Champion Skill: Exchange - Upon physical contact, Elian can transfer any wounds or ailments from the target to himself, or vice versa.

OPTIONAL

Backstory: As an orphan, Elian was apprenticed to Clearwater's apothecary at a young age; while the advancement of healing magic made such practices less valuable, not all were attuned to healing magic, and so it was that apothecaries still had their place. Elian spent his childhood memorizing herbs and poultices, learning which plants would save a man and which would kill him. It was grueling work, made more unpleasant by his strict mentor, but he persevered, eventually becoming a skilled apothecary in his own right. His position as a physician's apprentice of sorts allowed Elian to meet and treat a great many people. Some of these, after great persistence and tolerance of his sour attitude, even managed to become his friends.

Additional Notes:
  • Before the truth was made known to him, Elian paid little thought to the gods above. A prayer would not cure a cold (for him, at least), nor would piety stave away infection, and so he had little use for either.
  • After the truth was revealed, Elian's divine interests, or lack thereof, were peaked: was the cycle necessary, just as it was sometimes necessary to remove a limb to save the patient? And if not, could the gods really be called as such, flawed as they then would be?

H0B4v.jpg
Name: James Mason
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Appearance: (Physical attributes + Clothing preference) James has bronze, dark brown skin, cropped black coiled hair, dark brown eyes, and a tall, lean frame, standing at 6'3. He always maintains perfect posture and has a love for classy, elegant apparel, even bordering on much too formal for most occasions.
Personality: James is refined and dignified, and values manners, eloquence, and keeping a calm mind at all costs. He tries to be the voice of reason and diplomacy, doing his best to keep the peace so that things can stay as organized as possible. He's loyal, determined, and a hard worker, willing to help in any way he can. He can spread himself too thin, however, as he sets impossible standards for himself and can easily burn himself out trying to keep everything in line by himself. Because of his sheltered upbringing, he is easily flustered by vulgarity, and has little patience for bad manners and uncouth behavior.
Magic Affinity: Practical - Precognition
Preferred Weapon: Bow and arrows
Affiliated God: Deity of Knowledge
Strengths: (Physically strong, Natural resistance to a certain element, etc.) Observant, excellent deduction skills, dexterous
Weaknesses: (Please have an equal number of weaknesses to strengths) Perfectionistic, not strong, not accustomed to getting filthy

Champion Skill: (Basically an Ultimate Move - Very powerful, definitely associated with a particular god, but temporarily leaves character severely weakened after use) Can share a vision with someone else about a certain event in their own future.

OPTIONAL
Backstory:
James stemmed from a very wealthy family, and from birth had his life planned out for him. He wasn't allowed much freedom as a child, being pushed to spend all of his time studying to the point of fatigue under the eye of a father that emotionally abused and berated him. He was too young to know at the time, but his father was envious of his precognitive ability. He would force James to never use his ability unless it somehow benefited him, which made it difficult for James to hone his talents, and made him feel repressed and ashamed of his own blessing. James escaped his home at the age of eighteen, determined to make his own fortune after knowing that his father would never let him have his independence, cutting him off from any chance of gaining his inheritance.

Additional Notes: Homoromantic/homosexual

Don't compare him to his father or insinuate that he relies on him in any way. He wants nothing to do with the man and is trying to distance himself from his influence.

pic (1).v1.jpg
Name: Misha Cloverfield
Gender: female
Age: 21
Appearance: Standing at 5'7, Misha poses pale skin and dark blue eyes. She likes to keep her attire formal by wearing her priestess garb and covered almost all of her skin. She carries a briefcase which she claims to contain her demon hunting equipments.
Personality: Misha is a cheerful girl who likes to tease other people. She's also quite a braggart and can be annoying when she reminds other people of her achievements. Like that time when her traps were able to kill a giant beast and of course her so-called legendary feat of slaying 100 demons during her training in the central church.
Magic Affinity: Elemental - earth
Preferred Weapon: pistol
Affiliated God: God of trickery
Strengths: very good runner
Weaknesses: a coward

Champion Skill: Conjures up to 100 clones of herself. These clones are near indistinguishable from their original but will vanish once they take any damage.

OPTIONAL
Backstory: Misha wasn't born in Clearview but from somewhere in the Far North. She just one day shows up in Clearview, alone and battered so the church registered her into the orphanage. She claimed her parents to have died during a treasure hunt. She grew up to be a rather mischieful priestess. Not really the best role model or someone that exert dignity like the head-priest hoped to be but she is a sociable person and quite liked by the general populace. She's particularly popular among the kids due to her flashy earth tricks.

One day the head-priest offered her a promotion from a regular priestess to a demon hunter, the only one in the town! She accepted it and was sent to the central church in the capital to receive her training. After she returned she shared her stories with the some of the kids, being a braggart she is, she bloated her own story to make it more awesomer. She actually only killed 1 demon as a final test but she told them that she killed 10! Then after the kids spread it the story bloated even more and now she's known as the killer of 100 demons. Because of this she's oftenly offered to to join a monster raid but she usually refused it.

Additional Notes:
  • Sexuality: bisexual
  • She named her pistol Absolute Demon Eradicator of Doom. Yeah, she's quite pretentious.
  • Her briefcass is most of the time filled with drinks and ammos for her gun. The only demon hunting equipment inside it is a dagger that can weaken a demon's ties with the physical world.

FREYA ORLOFF
Frey.jpegName: Freya "Frey," Orloff
Age: 22
Gender: Cisgender Female

Personality: Although at first sight, she may seem superficial with her vain and sometimes vapid comments, Frey is a keen observer and loves watching people - sometimes enjoying to poke the bear and elicit reactions from people to see what makes them tic. She's smart but has trouble with diplomacy and finds herself relying on acidic retorts and sarcastic comments to get by, hiding herself behind gossip and throwaway jokes as she's never been one for subtlety. Frey presents herself as an overconfident and sometimes arrogant young woman but she's scared, she sees people with amazing abilities and gifts and she worries she won't measure up as she ran away to see the world and learn magic but the only kind she excels in is blessings - and she feels like she's just a conduit for the gods with that. She's determined to prove her worth and prove that she belongs and so she fakes it until it feels real - although despite her worry about not belonging she does love her strange merry band of friends and cares about them deeply. She'd go to the ends of the world for them and she tries her best to show that.

Magic Affinity: Enchantment - Blessing
Preferred Weapon: Axes, two small axes that she had named although she can't tell them apart enough to say which is which.
Affiliated God: God of War

Strengths: Frey isn't afraid of a little blood and is fine with getting her hands dirty, whether that be in a fight or a sacrifice or a bit of manual labour.
Dedicated, if she starts something she'll finish it.
Observant.

Weaknesses:
- Her abilities are very much up to the whim of the gods and whether they deign to grant her what she petitions.
- She can be standoffish and brash which makes her a poor diplomat and a rather heavy handed negotiator.
- Has little patience.
- Lets her anger get the better of her.

Champion Skill: When a sufficient sacrifice is made Frey can invoke a strong blessing from her god; gifting either a berserker like state to aid her in battle or an insight into their opponents.

Backstory: Frey grew up in a small village, it was mainly made up of farmers and traders but her parents always held themselves above the rest as if they were somehow better than them. They were poised and snobbish and Frey always felt like she was three steps behind them. Her parents couldn't stand each other, Frey never understood why they were together - could never imagine them as young lovers besotted with one another, to her her Father always had a frown etched permanently into his face and her Mother always had greying hair and tired eyes. They couldn't understand her either, tutting at her whenever she was too rambunctious and lament the daughter that had been bestowed upon them. whenever she snuck away to a nearby farm or pestered the merchants for tales of other lands. And then when her blessing appeared, leaving her with an anger she never could understand - making her snappy and standoffish they resented the daughter they had been bestowed with even more. Her and her parents were two mismatched pieces that couldn't fit together, stuck unable to understand the other. She couldn't measure up to their desires or expectations and always felt like an odd end, wrong and never quite fitting with them even when she tried. And they found themselves at odds with a child who wanted nothing more than to escape the small confines of her home. They were satisfied with their lives, content to live their days away in their village and never see the world. Frey wasn't. And so her home wasn't a happy one, it was a dull tension that never seemed to dissipate - nothing ever happened but it always felt like things were on the edge of exploding and falling off of a cliff. The village she grew up in was suffocating, everyone was born there and died there and nothing ever changed. She could see her future written out in front of her in her parents, she'd become her Mother and have a daughter who would become her and the cycle would repeat endlessly. That was what was expected of her.

She'd said she wanted to be a warrior or an adventurer, she wasn't entirely sure what kind although she thought Taenora Academy could help her learn the right sort of magic for it but they'd just laughed and told her that the only thing other than one of them she could become was a Priestess. If she would amount to anything it would be that. But the only images of Priestesses Frey had was from the small church of the village, the priestess there was dull and had little patience or tolerance for anything outside of prayer - she always seemed still and serious like a statue and as a child Frey had been scared of her. She couldn't imagine being like her. Being holy and pious and devoted and
still. She'd never been very good at still, her parents would attend church and although she paid attention whenever they gave offerings or prayed she tended to get restless during the rest of it - finding it boring and dull. She was always moving and fidgeting and fiddling and muttering under her breath - energy bubbling away under the surface and craving a release. She needed a way to channel it and so she'd fight with the other children in her village, her parents hated it and would punish her whenever she came home with bruises and scrapes she couldn't convincingly explain away.

And as she got older the divide got worse, she refused to follow the path they laid out for her and they couldn't understand her reluctance.

And so Frey left as soon as she could, determined to find somewhere she'd feel right and she found herself at Taenora Academy.

Additional Notes:
- Freya is a bisexual biromantic individual.
- She's a terrible cook but she's got excellent taste in wine.
- She's constantly moving and fidgeting.
- Finds venting during prayer to be very good for stress relief although her parents used to chastise her for not being formal enough during prayer.
- The religious icon she carries with her is a small coin engraved with a small prayer on it, she wears it around her neck and uses it to channel her magic when she petitions or invokes a blessing from the gods. If she's making an offering then she uses whatever it at the alter.
- Frey is a coward at heart, at least when it comes to people, she's scared of being let down or being left alone and so she clings to material things and clings to her faith in the gods because at least with them she understands where she stands in the world - or she thought she did. She's always had a strange faith in the gods, they created everything and if they wanted they could control everything - she knew where she stood with them, she was tiny and like an ant and it felt safe knowing her place in the world. Her family was complicated and she struggled with people, she used her faith and acceptance of how the world worked to help get herself through hard times. Plus it was hard to doubt them when she experienced very tangible effects from their existence, everything about her magic - which was the most important thing she had to her - relied on and happened because of them.

((WAHAHA sorry for the latest reply lmao, I had to do something important asf ;-;

Name: Kaiju Konami
Age: 18 (If allowed, I wanted to make her the youngest.)
Gender: Demigirl
Height: 5’2
Personality: She’s an individual who enjoys time alone, she will barely talk, or stutter almost always when she talks. She’s very anxious and silent at first sight. When you get to know her, she’s a confident and open person, always saying her thoughts and not afraid to let you know what she thinks... She can go a little bit too far at time.
Appearance Description: She has a long, brown hair with a bit of faded white on the tips, with a bit of blue fish pins by some hair on her forehead. She’s usually seen wearing either a sand-coloured sweater or a white t-shirt with a fishing vest on top. And she just wears black baggy pants, or fish smelling , and a bit tattered jeans. She is always wearing a blue-ish scarf, wich he uses to hide her face when flustered or scared. She also uses it to put on her pet hamster.
Magic Affinity: Elemental- Water
Affiliated God: Goddess of Water
Backstory: Kaiju was born on a privileged, rich, family. Wich she honestly kind of hated, not like she wanted more, nothing like that. The first world problem was various bandits tried to enter the home on the daily, wich not only scared Kaiju of any social contact with people, but also heavily, probably traumatized her, reason why she barely speaks and thinks that most people are just b a d, and thats were her love for animals came in, it became a hobby to run out if the house and just go with the wild animals.. Wich were mostly street animals- her parents obviously scold her for this, yet it was better than just wait for something to happen that isnt getting robbed.

On her small trips, she usually brung her father’s fishing rod, and by the years, she was closely becoming an expert. She knew how to create bait with clams, the seasons each fish came, time, and weather. She’s very proud of this accomplishment, so she got a bit into swimming. But she honestly prefers fishing. Getting into deep water is scary. shiver

While on her small ‘adventures‘, she encountered a friend she would keep forever, it was an wild hamster, and she totally loved it, the hamster was shy as her, and it was super cute. It had small grey spots and was lightly chonk. She hid the hamster from her family by using the old method of box down the bed.

When she was 14, both of her parents well killed in a robbery, wich actually, truly, scarred her. Forever. Avoiding everyone was the norm, and when the guards came, she was sent to a foster home.. wich she escaped 2 years later.

She found the group when she was on the wild. When she was announced her alliance, she honestly thought it was one of her stupid dreams, wich was actually real.. Wich surprised her. Alot. ((My brain juice has been drained completely ideas go boom))
Special Ability (Or the one she uses the most): When she’s feeling extra lonely or sad, she can create a water animal of her choice when enough water is presented. She usually uses it to comfort herself, and almost never for fighting.. she’ll feel bad for the creature.

Strengths: ‘Talking’ to animals, She speaks cat, dog, and probably bear. Water Morphing, fishing, cooking, throwing and catching, making friendships mostly with animals

Weaknesses: Being with others, teamwork, keeping things safe, emotional moments, deaths in general, speaking normally to strangers.

Other Notes:
-Lesbian asf
-Hint: d o n t
