Overview

Areth is a mythical fantasy world, roughly equivalent to ours, and inhabited by humans and dragons. In the past, paired dragons and riders were common, each with their own quest given by the Dragon Oracle. However, with the Oracle fading, different groups have started to pursue their own agenda. Two of these are the day and night dragon enclaves, groups of dragon riders with a long history of conflict between them. The day dragon enclave tends towards order, and supports the Oracle’s decrees, while the night dragon enclave resents being tied down to one purpose, and enjoys the freedom that the Oracle’s weakness gives them. Because of this, many riders from the night dragon enclave want to sabotage the quest to restore the Oracle.

There is also a strong black market for the sale of dragon parts, especially those of the rarer dawn and dusk dragons, as they are believed by some to have healing or lucky properties and can be sold for high prices. Groups of dragon hunters arm themselves with dragon-bone weapons (one of the few materials that can pierce a dragon’s scales), and attempt to kill dragons for this purpose.

Dragons

There are four different types of dragons in Areth, corresponding to the time of day their egg was hatched - day, night, dusk and dawn. Day and night dragons are the most common, while dusk and dawn dragons are much rarer, due to the short window of time they can be born in. Each type of dragon is a different colour, and has an individual set of powers:
  • Day dragons are blue, and have healing fire.
  • Night dragons are black/purple, and can create a bubble of silence around them, meaning no-one outside it can hear sounds from inside it, such as wingbeats.
  • Dusk dragons are grey normally, and have chameleon-like camouflage.
  • Dawn dragons are gold, and have the power to create portals once a day, at dawn. These portals lead to our world, or out of it if the dragon is already in our world, though time passes differently in each world. A dawn dragon is able to choose either the place or the time at which they exit our world, but not both.
Each dragon has a rider, who they become linked with when the rider is young (usually age 13-17). All dragons have a psychic connection with their rider, and can "talk" to each other mentally, providing they're not too far away from each other. They also have a sense of where their rider is, which allows the dragon to find their rider for their first meeting.

Dragon names are often either words related to their time of day (e.g. a night dragon could be called Shadow) or more descriptive two-part names (e.g. Longfang)
