he walks like he's never fallen before โ€” it makes him as hard to hate as he is to like. his eyes are sharp, his smile is sharper. his tone is a touch too sarcastic, even when the words are polite. a lean figure reminds you of rumors about a track star past, the impatient click of his tongue reminds you of the ones about his temper. his clean-cut suits don't quite convince you of a clean-cut nature, when combined with traces of old piercings that his slicked back hair hardly tries to hide.

he's exactly what you expect, yet not at all, from the youngest anchor on the clock. he only reads his scripts once, he's not the type to be liked by his seniors. he wears luxury watches and drives foreign cars; it's not hard to assume the worst about how he got here. yet once filming starts, the assumptions fade a little. the blinding lights take the edge off his charm. he takes his work seriously, he knows what he's talking about, he's a natural with the cameras. so he starts off in the center at every company dinner...

...and always ends off in the corner, sipping on soda alone at the edge of the bustle. he doesn't like to drink at gatherings. he likes to slip away soundlessly for a smoke.

a lot has changed about im jaewoo since he was eighteen and angry. but he still hates when people pretend. he still pretends to be invincible.

got the script already?
the reminders of the past still haunt him to this day. daehyun still wonders if this is how things were supposed to go or it was the aftermath of a big what if; until this day, he still doesn't have an answer or maybe he just got tired of looking for one and accepted everything that has happened. despite all the time that has passed, daehyun hasn't stopped pretending to be likable and charming, always presenting himself with a kind demeanor towards his peers and an amicable smile, one that never reaches the corners of his eyes. he can't remember the last time his smile was sincere, but still, no one notices.

He knows he is still caged in that golden boy persona that everyone made him out to be and he perfectly knows he is more flawed than what everyone else believes, after all, he is still as complacent and diligent as he was in highschool, probably that was the reason why the broadcast station trusted him with such duty as being the news writer at such a young age.

despite not being in the spotlight, daehyun still gets his praises the usual "we couldn't have done this without you" has become the usual formality of every work gathering to this daehyun just smiles and nods and replies that it was a team effort, then he just disappears into the void leaving everyone else as he retires for a smoke on his own, those moments of solitude are the brief moments he actually feels like a real person.

In other instances, Daehyun wouldnโ€™t have minded the company dinner that was happening that night. He knew exactly how to act and what to say to make everything run smoothly so he could continue keeping the appearance of who he was, the persona that he crafted perfectly based on what the others expected from him. But tonight he felt rather moody. He couldnโ€™t blame anyone else rather than him.

Im Jaewoo, a reminder of his youth and, most importantly, a reminder of his past, one that he desired to erase, but that until this day even with his attempts to move on, leaving that story behind him closed under a lock to never being open again, somehow it still existed as this person that once meant everything to him but that now was just presence he didnโ€™t want near.

Daehyun hated the idea that the person who could see through him despite all this time made his comeback into his life unannounced and one thing he hated the most was the unexpected. And now he was back with that smug smirk of his as he was the center of attention of everyone during that night. The conversations about his return were the major topic of the night and the more Daehyun heard about him, the more he wanted to leave the place.

Jaewoo was a disturbance in the life Daehyun worked so hard to achieve, one where everything that once defined him was just a thing of the past, but seeing him mingle with everyone was almost as if he was haunting him to make him realize that no matter how hard he tried his past would always follow him.

โ€œI heard he was really popular back when he was in the United States division. What do you think made him come back?โ€ One of the assistants asked him.
โ€œNo clue, probably he got a better offer here. He is the type of guy that likes superficial things, money included,โ€
Daehyun said with a shrug of his arms. โ€œOh right! I heard you two joined at the same time before he was transferred. Do you think you could introduce us? He is my type!โ€ the assistant said cheerfully, making Daehyun feel awkward at the sudden proposition.
โ€œI wasnโ€™t expecting that, but I donโ€™t think I can help you. You know, itโ€™s just my policy not to mix personal relationships with work. So Iโ€™d rather stay on the sidelines,โ€
He replied awkwardly.

โ€œI am going to go and grab some fresh air. Iโ€™ll be back in a moment.โ€
He said before he stood up and walked towards the exit. He needed the air and, most likely, a cigarette if he wanted to make it through the rest of the work dinner.

the anchor
His eyes wandered over to the group in the corner again. His eyes flickered away, right on time, as if their gazes had been trained to avoid meeting. His stare lingered for a long second, but the subject of his focus no longer spared him another glance.

He'd expected as much, of course, but it still ticked him off. No, it ticked him off because he expected it. He'd been annoyed ever since the first polite smile Ha Daehyun had sent his way.

He hasn't changed a bit.

Jaewoo took a distracted sip from the cup he'd been holding, his fingertips already a little numb against the ice-cold glass. The sudden, sharp taste of sprite on his tongue inspired a grimace.

โ€œSo, what made you want to come back to Seoul?โ€

Languidly, his gaze traveled back towards his own table, landing on the speaker beside him. Kang Inbeom, he recalled, a two-year senior, working on the morning news program. Excessively friendly; the type to talk shit behind your back โ€” or that's what Jaewoo clocked.

โ€œNot much, just missed it.โ€
An unconvincing answer, he recognized, but the one he'd long since settled on giving. A hint of displeasure flitted through Inbeom's eyes.

โ€œNot to be an anchor? I mean, it's a tough job to land, even if you studied overseas.โ€

An uninvited hand reached out, landing a soft punch on his shoulder, as if saying come on, tell me the truth. Jaewoo smiled.

โ€œNot really.โ€

Inbeom's expression stiffened, yet his lips seemed unsettled, itching to ask yet another probing question. In the corner of Jaewoo's eyes, the figure in dark green slipped away from the bustle. He thought for a second, then rose to his feet.
โ€œSorry,"
he lied, giving the senior his own pat on the shoulder,
โ€œI have to go make a call, just remembered."

โ€œGirlfriend waiting on you?โ€
Another voice in the crowd teased. The short laugh Jaewoo returned was a scathing one, as he strolled towards the exit doors.

It was cold outside, a belated reminder of the coat he'd left inside. In the narrow alley beside the shop, Daehyun stood, his back tilted away from Jaewoo's view, holding up a newly-lit cigarette. Now, here was something unexpected, his inner voice mused. Ha Daehyun, smoking alone in the dark.

His steps slowed a little at the sight, and the pause finally gave him time to rethink himself. What did he even want to say? Truth be told, nothing much. There was no real reason to follow him out here. Jaewoo toyed with the lighter in his pant pocket, running his thumb over its ridges, before letting it lie snugly back where it was.

โ€œHa Daehyun,โ€
he called, as he pulled out his own box of cigarettes,
โ€œmind lending me a light?โ€

He supposed he hadn't changed much either.
