kallie

"Kai, you take longer than I do to get ready! Come on, or we're going to be late." Slumping against the banister at the bottom of the stairs, Kallie crossed her arms over her chest, rolling her eyes when she heard her brother yell something unintelligible back. Not even bothering to yell up at him again, she just scoffed, waiting a few more seconds before she pushed off of the stairs. She walked in circles while she waited, tapping her feet against the floor when she finally came to a stop. "Kai!" She finally yelled again, dropping her arms to her side and balling her hands into fists.

This time there was no response back, and she waited a few seconds before she rolled her eyes and spun on her heel. Heading for the door, she snagged his keys from the table beside it. "Not gonna make it at all if I take your car, are you?" Not that she would. They both knew she would wait outside for him until he finally got there, and pout the entire way to school. As it stood this time, though, she wouldn't get the chance. A hand came out of nowhere, snatching the keys from her. Her heart skipped a beat, but she recognized Kai's voice from behind her.

"Like you ever would." Kai grinned as he walked past her to the door, pushing it open and stepping outside. Groaning, Kallie pulled her own house key from her pocket and locked the door once she was outside too, turning to find Kai already in the driver's seat of his old Mustang. Kallie hated that thing, but since she didn't have a car yet it was either ride with Kai or ride the bus. There were many mornings she contemplated the bus, today being yet another one of them. Jogging down the steps, she headed for the passenger side of the car, but Kai put the stupid thing in reverse and started down the driveway.

"Kai!" He slammed on the brakes, finally letting her get inside, mocking her as she buckled her seatbelt and shut the door. She fixed him with a glare and didn't say a word to him the entire ride to school. Once he parked, she was out of the car in a matter of seconds, still not saying anything as she started towards the building. Once inside, she felt some of her annoyance fade away as she headed for her locker. There were signs posted all over about the Halloween party tonight, and while Kallie was a little nervous about going, Mari had convinced her to go and now it was too late to back out. Or was it?

kai

Kallie had been yelling up at Kai for at least ten minutes by now, but he just wasn't ready yet. Standing shirtless in front of his mirror, he ran his fingers through his hair a few times, aiming for that perfectly messy look he wore so well. His jeans hung low on his hips, and he hadn't even bothered to find his other shoe yet. The first one sat by his bed where he'd thrown it the night before, which meant the other one had to be nearby, right? Kallie was worried about being late, but a quick glance at the clock told him they had plenty of time before the warning bell.

A few minutes later, he'd thrown a shirt on and found the missing shoe. Running his fingers through his hair one more time, he winked at his reflection before he left his room, heading down the stairs. Kallie wasn't at her usual post at the bottom of the stairs, though he found her by the door, picking up his keys. He grinned as he snatched the keys from her hand. "Like you ever would." He told her in response to her muttered comment, glancing back and enjoying the scowl present on her features. Heading to his favorite car-- well, his only car-- he hopped in the driver's seat while Kallie locked the house up.

When she started approaching, he'd already brought the car to life, and he shifted into reverse to mess with her. Laughing as she called his name out, he pressed on the brake and let her get in. "Kai!" He mocked her, flashing her another grin before he backed out of the driveway and headed to the hell he called school. Thank god it was senior year. If he was lucky, he could get the hell out of this place next year. Maybe go somewhere on a sports scholarship, become a big football star or baseball or something. He wouldn't mind making a name for himself that wasn't connected to his family.

The ride to school was quiet save for the radio playing in the background, and when he parked, Kallie was already getting out. "See you later!" He called to her, chuckling under his breath as he leaned back in his seat. They still had time before the bell, so he didn't know what Kallie had been so worried about. Hell, he could even take a nap if he wanted. Reaching to unbuckle his seat belt, he pushed open the driver's door but didn't get out of the car yet. Turning the radio up some, he laced his fingers together behind his head, his eyes lifting to scan the people arriving.

Eloise Mayberry

Eloise gave her reflection one last check in the cracked mirror of the crumbling bathroom. In the dim, flickering light that cast dramatic shadows on her face, she couldn’t tell too much about herself, couldn’t tell if she’d applied her makeup right, couldn’t tell if anyone would be able to see the bags beneath her eyes. She looked sickly and washed out from the pale light of the exposed florescent bulb, but she really hoped it was just the lighting.

If nothing else, she could say she was dressed as a vampire and leave it at that. Halloween gave her a great excuse.

If anyone asked, she’d gotten plenty of sleep last night. If anyone asked, yes, she was doing fine, how were you?

God…her fingers craved a cigarette right now.

Rapping the nails she’d manicured with Walmart stick-ons on the peeling linoleum, Elle tried to force back the craving, pressing her tongue into the roof of her mouth. She didn’t need it — maybe she could get by one night without a freaking cancer stick.

But hell, who was she kidding here? She was a creature of habit, after all.

You could ask Kai about that.

She laughed aloud at herself and flicked off the light, making her way to her bedroom.

If she’d lied long enough about the cigs, she could keep it going. There was no real reason to quit. The boys and girls she kissed questioned it sometimes, but they didn’t ask too much about it — and if they did, she could just shut them up with another kiss.

She dropped on her bed and positioned the cigarette between her lips, then lit it with her lighter. She breathed in some of the heavy smoke, then exhaled it into the air.

Just a few before she headed to the dance. That was all she needed to get through the morning.

As she rolled up to the school in the neighbor’s Sedan (shoutout Mrs. Linda for letting her borrow this thing), Elle prodded the bow tying up her hair. She thought she looked cute — a bow in her hair, a cute little skirt, a nice shirt.

Decent for the day.

She gave herself a glance in the rearview mirror after she parked the car, and then, smiling softly, she popped open the door and started inside.
