They come from all walks of life. Some are young trainers, having just celebrated their tenth birthday. Some others are wrestling with their transition into adulthood. And some have lived their life for a good while already, but wish to persue their dreams of finally becoming a famous Pokemon trainer. No matter how young or how old, no matter from where they are or what their goal is - New trainers are born every day, and Occas has long began to embrace the start of a trainer's journey with the so called Rookie Month. Every year, alongside the many younglings who receive one of three possible Pokemon to begin their journey, all trainers are invited to Professor Willow's labratory, where basic equipment is given out, in addition to some kind words.

Here you are. You've received a Holo Caster message a few weeks ago. The Connex Corp, using its wide-reaching Network, has announced the exact date of this year's Rookie Month, and invited all people who feel up to the task to attend the event. Whatever your motivation is, you know that this is your chance to fulfill your very own dream.

The message is still burned into your brain. The invitation into Professor Willow's lab, sent to all newcomer trainers' holo logs, giving you the chance to start your adventure alongside the hundreds of rookies that will surely follow it, too. Wether you're new in the Occas region or have traveled here from your hometown within the region - There's a vast land waiting to be discovered, waiting to be conquered by ambitious trainers.

Pendulum City has a reputation as being the "starting city", and thus many people living elsewhere come here during the Rookie Month. Parents or friends sending off their kids to be safe and sound during their adventure or onlooers, who have gathered outside the labratory, a stage built where the new trainers can make friends and show off their new Pokemon. Many of the traditional elemental starters yap around happily, others aren't quite as fond of their new human companions. A spectacle, truely. The lab is open all day, waiting for latecomers or shy ones to trickle in with a bit of delay.

A few of the trainers have began to chat, others cry and hug their families, and some were unable to hold their horses and have engaged in their first Pokemon battles against their fellow newbies. There's something to watch for everyone, and the whole city is littered with decorations, food stands, music and a plethora of overly motivated trainers and freshly distributed Pokemon friends.

The day begins. Feel free to interact with one another in the city, introduce your characters by interacting with NPCs, oberserve or head straight for the labratory. The adventure starts here!

With all the newbie trainers celebrating the start of their journeys, the streets have gotten pretty crowded. It was apparent to those traveling by car. It wasn't an option that too many people had chosen, but Ellen and her mom had little choice. They had driven all the way from Newgroove; not because it was too far to make it on feet, but they decided that Ellen's first steps should be in Pendulum City. It felt right to begin from the place known as the starting city.

As their car entered the city, Ellen and her mother, Emilie, were having a silent contest of who was more anxious about the girl's adventure. They had run out of topics for small talk long ago and the moment of goodbye was approaching rapidly. Emilie tried to let go of her frustrations by honking at the innocent pedestrians.

"Really, so many people..." She complained, shaking her head with disapproval, before she finally found a parking spot. "Well, Ellen, we're here! Do you have everything?"

The girl, who had been biting her lips in nervousness for a good hour, looked down to check her bag. There was no time to dig through all of her belongings yet again, so she had to assume that as long as the bag was in her hands, she was as ready as she could be.

"I think so..." Ellen responded blankly, causing her mother to chuckle.

"I know you're a big girl now, but... don't forget to call. And make sure Art and Chi take good care of you. And if you ever need anything-"

"Mom, I'll be fine," Ellen interrupted with impatience, attempting to convince both herself and her mom. Somehow, after hearing that, the woman felt more reassured. She leaned in to kiss her daughter's cheek.

"Alright. Be careful out there! Remember that dad and I love you!"

"Love you too, mom," Ellen admitted with a blush, cutting the goodbyes short. She left the car to end up on the crowded streets.

Once outside of the car's comfort zone, the girl took a deep breath. There it was, her journey was finally starting. She looked around to see all of the other trainers playing with their pokemon or chitchatting with others. A feeling of loneliness struck her. Ellen decided that she needed someone to talk to, so she let out her two pokemon of their pokeballs. They both had been expecting to see Pendulum City, but witnessing the excited celebrations intrigued them regardless. Artemis the Eevee, who was similar to Ellen in many aspects, including the curiosity part, looked around to all sides, trying to take in as many views as possible. He especially got interested in a battle between two other trainers, not far from where they were. The pokemon headed towards them, leaving Ellen and Michifu behind. The Espurr, on the other hand, while still amazed at how lively the place was, decided to stick close to Ellen. Someone had to watch over her, after all. She clung to the girl's leg with her tiny paws.

"It's nice, isn't it? All these people and pokemon... I'm so glad we're here," Ellen noticed dreamily. Then she went after Artemis, with her left leg's movements being slightly hindered by the Espurr attached to it. She blended in with the crowd that surrounded the battling trainers, hoping not to get noticed and challenged to a battle. Even if she loved battling, letting all of these people watch her first battle as an official pokemon trainer would be so stressful... Looking away from the battle for a moment, Ellen searched for any other interesting events going on. Was it time for her to go to the lab? Or maybe she could find the courage to talk to another newbie trainer?

The journey to Pendulum City took a couple of days from Califresk. He already said his goodbyes to his hometown, and his parents seemed like they were more excited than he was. Their first child was finally going out to get something done. One of the trainers from the gym, Rick, was generous enough to escort him all the way to Pendulum City, saying that it might get a little dangerous. He and Bell thought they could handles themselves, but apparently the others didn't. If traveling with an escort put their minds to peace, then he really didn't have anything to protest against. Besides, Rick said he had business to attend to in Pendulum City anyway. So after the two entered the city, the two parted ways with amicable smiles.

Josiah had never set foot on a city quite like this one. There were so many tall buildings, so many people, so much
noise. Even though it wasn't the quietest city in Occa, it was a lively place. He closed his eyes for a bit and sighed before walking through the city to find the lab where everyone was gathered. Bell was literally bouncing on his shoulder from excitement, and it was hard to keep her from falling off. He bet that the crowd in front of her made it really tempting to steal something, which would cause trouble for him again, but he predicted that it would happen once or twice before they left the city.

He looked around to see trainers of all ages, crying and saying their heartfelt goodbyes to their families. Some were walking alone, some were getting dropped off by car. Josiah couldn't stop the small smile from appearing on his face as he looked on into the lab. With that slight smile on his face (and a still bouncing Bell), he started to walk around, debating whether he should just pick someone to talk to or not. Meanwhile, Bell was searching for potential targets. It didn't take her long to find one.

Without warning, she leaped from Josiah's shoulders, messily snatched the hair band off of the girl's head and landed on the ground. Josiah couldn't stop her, but Bell immediately returned to Josiah's shoulders to show him her earnings. He almost palmed himself when Bell put the hairband on
him. What should he do? Stupid! Apologize! He calmly the took the hairband off of his head, hoping he wasn't blushing from embarrassment. He would pay back Bell for this. Bell just snickered. Josiah went up to the girl and looked down at the shorter girl.

"Sorry she took your hairband," he said and offered her the hairband back. "This one has a bad habit of stealing. Not very well either." He smirked slightly, happy to know that the comment was a jab at Bell's stealing skills off the battle field. Bell let it slide this time since the girl she stole from was a cute girl with such a cute pokemon and she was feeling
slightly guilty now, but next time she won't be so forgiving.

Zoey Gibson

It seemed the traveling just wouldn't find an end these days. Ever since she waved Hoenn goodbye, her nerves had been thinly spread due to the excitement of beginning a proper journey in Occas - The place her grandfather had chosen for his adventure. As such, expectations were high. They continued to grow as soon as she stepped foot on land for the first time in her new home, and began her journey towards Pendulum City, where young trainers seemed to pilgrim in order to start. Such region-wide unison astonished Zoey, who remembered her unruly days in The Under with a smile.

The night was a peaceful one. After her long trip, Zoey fell asleep almost immediately upon falling into her hotel room's bed. Sleeping like a stone, she felt refreshed in the next morning, and was grateful for it. The energy in the city was contagious, but she quietly registered how exhausting and demanding this event must be for the less intrigued. Micolash, the Deino, who had curled up in a tiny blanket in a corner of her room, seemed grumpy already. Zoey smiled faintly, and recalled her Pokemon.
"I don't think you'd like the crowds very much, dear Mico." Her Shuppet lurked into the room through the ceiling, cackling. "Now, now" she scolded Ophelia with a maternal tone, "let's be nice today. There will be a lot of people and it'd be very sad if we were rude to them, do you not think so?" Ophelia swirled around and slowly sank into the room, settling on a spot behind Zoey.

An intricate morning routine later, Zoey put some finishing touches on the ribbons that adorned her dress, and smiled into the mirror. She put extra effort into her hair today. Afterall, every trainer only starts their journey once. Her hotel's lobby was flodded with trainers chatting, too, and she assumed they were all trainers who had traveled to Pendulum for the day. Along with them, she made her way through the city streets, taking in all the festive decorations and stages put up for the event.

"The city really loves the rookie month, does it not?" she asked Ophelia absent-mindedly, which caused the Suppet to squeak in agreement. A few small kids, a little too young to be part of the newcomers that receive their starter Pokemon today, pointed at Zoey, whose appearance stood out just a tiny bit, even amongst the colorful costumes of the citizens, as, through the laughter, she heard a voice ring through.

"A thief, mh?"

She changed direction to approach the two teenagers, feeling a little nostalgic. Like a ghost, she inched towards the boy, behind whom she popped up, bent forward and lurking over his shoulder like a shadow. Ophelia squinted her eyes, knowing that her owner had a habit of inappropriately sneaking up on others and scaring them. And she dared lecture her about being rude...

Emmet Slater

“Sweetie, be careful out there, okay? You can always call me if you need help.”

Emmet leaned up against a tree, trying to tune out the din of the all the other new trainers, so that he could hear what his wife – his ex-wife – was saying to their daughter. They didn’t know he was here, and he sort of preferred to keep it that way for a little longer.

“Of course Mom! I’ll keep in touch.”

From where he was standing, he could just barely see the two in a deep hug, and he smiled softly, pulling the brim of his hat down so that no one would be staring at the strange man whose eyes were starting to water. Damn onion-cutting Ninjask…

The two said their goodbyes, and Emmet was glad to see her dab her eyes with the edge of her sleeve. He wasn’t the only one, then. He took a deep breath and pinched the palm of his hand. It distracted him from the heavy feeling in his chest.

After a few minutes, his daughter walked by where he was standing, Good. Hopefully the ex was gone, and he could get his goodbyes done in private.

“Hey kiddo,” he said, just loud enough to get her attention. He grinned when she turned her head and her eyes lit up, and she came bounding toward him.

“Dad! I didn’t think you’d make it!”

“I didn’t think so either, but I… I convinced my boss to let me take the day off.” In truth, he had been fired the day before yesterday after picking a fight with the sleazy manager of a food truck. He didn’t like hot dogs that much anyways.

“Garnet, baby, behave out there, okay?” He watched her roll her glittering green eyes, and he pouted. “Come, I’m your dad! You have to take your old man seriously! Look, it’s right here in the Dad Book.” He took a pocket-sized sketchbook from his jacket, and hastily scribbled something in a blank spread before showing her.

Daughters have to take their dads for srs

“Oh, Dad…” She hugged him tightly and Emmet froze for just a second, before hugging her back. “You’re so silly, it’s no wonder no one ever takes you seriously! You’re such a goof. I’m really going to miss you though…”

“Ah… Haha… Yeah, that’s me… Dad, the goof…” The chuckle was forced and fake, and he wondered how long it had been since anyone took him seriously.

“But really, kid.” He kissed the top of her head. “Go out and conquer the world. Change your underwear every day.”

“Dad!”

Emmet continued, unfazed. “No boys. They’re smelly and have cooties. No partying. Don’t accept open drinks from strangers.”

“Dad, cooties aren’t real. And who parties out in the wilderness”

“They are now, because I said so. And cultists, maybe.” He frowned slightly, as she wiggled out of the hug. “Don’t break the law, don’t go walking through puddles you can’t see the bottom of. No operating motor vehicles, you’re too young to be licensed. No making nice with misbehaved delinquents, either. They’re no good for you, or for anyone. They’ll just drag you down…”

“Dad, I really need to go…”

“…. I’m sorry. I love you, Garnet.”

“I love you too, Daddy. Bye!”

“… Bye.”

Emmet quietly let go of his daughter and watched her disappear into the crowd. He stood by that tree and stared at the Pokemon laboratory for a long time, watching all the other parents who were saying goodbye to their children. Good. He wasn’t alone. Except he sort of was, because now he had no one to go home to. No daughter, no spouse, no job…

He crossed his arms and stared at the lab thoughtfully. He wondered what his life would have been like back in Hoenn, if he had gotten a Pokemon back then and went on a journey. It would have kept him out of a lot of trouble. But he would have never met the woman he had loved, or have had his daughter. He briefly imagined himself, a thirty-five year old man, dressed like a young trainer and striking a pose after winning a gym badge. No, a contest ribbon. Something.

He scoffed a little too loudly. “Hah! Stupid… This is so stupid…”

But for whatever reason, he couldn’t pull himself away. His fingers tapped anxiously. He was a grown man. Grown men didn’t drop everything they had and go running around the world. But… Some did. And they got famous for it. Earned money from betting on battles. And he had a Pokemon. A Duskull, a lovely ghost he captured all the way back in Hoenn. Sure, his darling Totes was no spring chicken but… No.

“I’m too old for this shit,” Emmet muttered.

Freud was chirping with laughter, his small bell-like hands covering his face as he floated near the very sick Florence and Matisse. The Deerling had it's head poked through the ship's railings with shaky hind legs, and Florence with her body hanging limply over the edge ready for another wave of vomit.

She had taken a ship before from Canalave City to the nearby isles for a summer vacation and managed. But a week at sea Occas-bound? She hadn't realised she'd signed a death wish. Sailors and other cabin-members passed by her with grimaces for the green-faced trainer and Pokémon.

'BZZZT! SHIP REPORT: WE ARE A LITTLE UNDER AN HOUR AWAY FROM MAINLAND OCCAS, PENDULUM CITY. PLEASE GATHER YOUR LUGGAGE AND BE READY TO GET OFF.

'Ley!' Freud floated down, picking off Florence's ratty straw-hat for her attention. She picked up her head from the boat railing upon the absence of weight on her head to espy the shape of land on the horizon. Occas. She'd made it.

'One hour to freedom,' she muttered, her sea-sickness beginning to fade with every knot closer to land they came; Matisse was the same. He'd lifted his head from the railings and began the slow, almost-drunken wobble back to their cabin to get their stuff and to hopefully hide away in his Pokéball for the final stretch to freedom. Florence didn't let him return to his Pokéball at all for the journey. She insisted that if she had to suffer, he did, too. Freud only snickered at their misery.

She sat down on the cabin bed with Matisse sprawled and Freud carrying fresh apples to stick in her oversized hiker's backpack that dwarfed her size. A normal person would be crushed by the backpack's weight, but Florence carried it with ease. She took the apples from the Ledyba and packed it away along with her clothes and other essentials for the journey through Occas.

The ship foghorn sounded followed by a sharp ring of the dock bell. The ship thudded softly against the harbour with a final halt. Florence pulled her backpack on and picked up the frail Deerling and stepped off the ship with a sigh of relief. The nausea was beginning to abate and Freud was already darting over trainers' heads with excitement.

Sawyer

"Hey you aren't supposed to smoke around here! Smokers are jokers!"

For a moment the world seemed to be frozen, like a still from a movie that wasn't fully loaded. Motion should have happened. At just the same point a sane person would click the refresh button, the still moves. In this instance, the still was Sawyer finally acknowledging the anti smoking slogan casually tossed her way by glancing away from the wall she'd been staring at, sunglasses tilted down at the edge of her nose, and at the young trainer waiting for her response.

A response of slowly rolling her eyes back towards the wall and ignoring him.

"Hey c'mon! Put it out! Don't be like that"

This time there wasn't even an eye roll. The trainer seemed beside himself and turned his hat backwards before puffing up his chest. "Alright then smoking teen lady! Let's battle!" He throws out a pokeball, revealing an eager looking Charmander. The eyes of both the fire lizard and the trainer follow the motions Sawyer makes, expecting her to toss out her own pokemon for a battle. The eagerness seems to vanish a bit when Sawyer puts the cigarette out on the wall and leans down to light a new one off the charmander's tail before walking away.

"Hey come back! Let's battle!"

Sawyer picks up the pace, turning a corner. She immediately knew she'd regret wearing a stupid trainer pin. Only in Pendulum would people take buttons and pins seriously. Holding the cig between her lips she fiddles with the pin secured in her belt. It was a pain to get in there, resisting all attempts to stay put but now that it was in, it wouldn't budge. She throws her hands up in aggravation before continuing on. It was too early in the day for a battle, her head still fighting the last bits of a throbbing headache off. She didn't even drink the night before, Remy decided it was a good night to throw a fit in their cheap room so most of the night was spent drying off the bed and stealing towels from any rooms nearby.

So with red eyes and damp clothing, Sawyer had checked out from the motel and made her way to the Pendulum downtown. Despite the open skies above, it felt cramped to Sawyer. The world in general felt too big and the buildings shooting up into it just served to enhance it. Before long, she'd ducked into a convince store to mollify the slight agoraphobia she was feeling. It really was ridiculous but it helped more than she'd like to admit. Buying a pair of cheap sunglasses and a pack of cigarettes, Sawyer ventured back out only to be accosted by a trainer.

Not enough people turned down battles in her opinion. Especially with kids like that. If he'd won, she'd be a loser. If she'd won, she'd be an asshole. Lose lose situation, best to leave it be.

Finding a nice spot to stand, Sawyer replays the message on her caster for the umpteenth time. This whole thing, it was a crazy act. It took a while to convince herself that this wasn't just some big prank. She felt out of place and uncomfortable. It didn't make sense why she was doing this but here she was. Putting the message back into her saved data, Sawyer pulled up her map and started towards the Pokemon Lab. May as well get it over with.

Getting a few more looks from parents as she marched through the city, Sawyer finally gave in, letting her Aron out to walk alongside her. Lots of kids love to carry their pokemon or let them ride all over on their backs but Nemo was nearly 200 pounds. No thanks, he could walk. She looks down at him, the little tubster still happy as ever to shuffle along on his stubby little legs. A smile turns up at the corner of her mouth. If Nemo could handle things, then she could too.

Before too long, the Lab turns up, a crowd having gathered. Having come from Dotwell, crowds were nothing new but being in Pendulum and not wanting to be engulfed by the smell of baby powder and that fucking 'TRAINER' brand body spray, she held back. She'd go in before closing, now would just be a waste of time. Leaning on a planted tree, she hears someone vocalize her internal thoughts.

"I'm too old for this shit"

It was an odd thing to mutter in happy go lucky Pendulum but hearing it made her feel a little better. From where she was with her back to the speaker, she mutters back a bit louder.

"Got that right...." She exhales a could of smoke from behind the tree. Finally peeking around to see who stated the obvious for her.

As Ellen was looking around in search of further excitement, she suddenly felt something climb up her body when she least expected it. She let out a confused gasp as that mysterious something pulled on her hairband. Startled by the sudden attack, Ellen closed her eyes as part of her defensive mechanism, losing her only chance at catching the culprit hot-handed. A moment later, she sensed that the danger had gone away and she opened her eyes. Her hand went to check up on her head to see if anything was missing- The hairband! Ellen looked around in panic.

"Eek! What was that?" She asked, aiming the question more at her pokemon than anybody else. Artemis was alerted by the sudden squeak of his trainer, he looked away from the battle to gaze at Ellen and try to identify her problem. Michifu had been more observant than the other two; she had seen the mischievous Sneasel, even if she was too slow to react. She poked Ellen's leg and pointed to the approaching boy. The girl glanced first at her Espurr, then at the stranger. Uh oh. A stranger.

"Oh, um, um!" she responded eloquently as the boy handed her the red hairband. Giving up temporarily on saying anything, she took it from him and placed it back in its original location. As a result of this sudden human interaction, Ellen's cheeks were more or less the same color as the hair ornament. The young trainer looked down at her feet to avoid eye contact. After a moment she managed to think of what is a good thing to say in such a situation. "I- Thank you... and sorry."

Meanwhile, Michifu sighed at Ellen's decision to apologize for getting her hairband stolen. Following that, she glared at the Sneasel. How rude of her, to mess with her trainer like that!...

Ellen found the courage to look up at the boy. Much to her surprise, she noticed that someone was standing behind him. A lady. Was she there last time she looked?... Somehow the sudden appearance of another person surprised the blonde enough to make her talk before her shyness struck.

"Hey, there is, um, someone behind you!"

For a moment, Josiah thought that there was something breathing down his neck but brushed it off as Bell being weird again. She could only stare at the girl with weirdly dressed girl leaning over her partner's shoulder, not sure of what to do. Josiah probably wouldn't like it if she hurt this person. But she was being creepy! She allowed herself to briefly look away from the weirdest girl she had ever laid eyes on to look back to Josiah, who looked amused at the situation.

"Hey, there is, um, someone behind you!"

Although his first thought was that Bell was always behind him, on his shoulder, his eyes immediately shifted to find... What the hell?! His heart jumped, and he couldn't hide his surprise. Yet, he didn't move an inch from his current position, mostly because he was frozen to it. At times like these, Josiah couldn't help but be eternally thankful that he appeared to remain significantly more calm than he was on the inside.

"Can I... help you?"

What went hand in hand with new found independence? Responsibility. And while there was a nagging voice in the back of her mind that beckoned she press on towards the lab, using curiosity as an excuse to delay the meeting with Willow, Sun decided to spend the morning exploring kiosks - most of which she had little intentions of spending her savings at. Having grown used to the four little toes that gripped her dainty right shoulder, Sun no longer reacted as Chrom pushed off to fly around a little, inevitably leaving behind little marks of penetration against her skin; where he'd drawn blood before were accumulated, fading scars, reminders of both their progressing bond and her mother's scoldings for allowing him to nick her shoulder.

"It's way too soon for reminiscing," Silvery melancholy escaped her lips, Sun found distraction in the presence of a snack bar, waving away her noibats little claws which gripped at strands of her hair so she'd remember to get him something. Leaning over, her brown eyes scanned the variety, though non-surprisingly she plucked and paid for sliced mango at the table, handing a sliver to the winged creature now resting on her shoulder again, then turning around to rest her weight against the festive stand and feast her eyes on the festivities from her little corner. She expected the city to be animated - what with the significance of the occasion - but found herself a little disheartened that it's nature, when not jammed from border to border with eager trainers, was buried beneath all this anticipation. Trying to imagine what the city might look like void of clutter only seemed to make it's ground level features more prominent - the cacophony of anxious battle cries, fare wells and sale tactics poured in her ears. However, so did a bit of distinct conversation not too far from where she stood -
the gradual forming of a group, or so it appeared, as it was radiating awkwardness.

"What say you, Chrom - do we make friends? Or head to the lab?"

Silently extending a claw, the bat directed her the opposite way of the strangers, lacking the same bad habit of procrastination that she seemed to indulge in on a daily basis. Her huff was an exhale of defeat - leave it to her to need even an
animal to reinforce her non-existent focus. "Alright, alright, you win. Let's get this over with," bracing herself for the rest of the way to the lab, Sun began to maneuver in a manner that'd prevent the dreaded trainer eye contact, and hopefully have her acquainted with the famed professor soon.

Zoey Gibson

Zoey's eyes flickered back and forth between the girl, the Sneasel, and the boy, her face still a needlessly eerie grimace. She tilted her head upon noticing the Pokemon's apparent interest in her, only to welcome the now turning boy with direct and dialated eye contact.

"Hello." she chirped, her voice denying any traces of guilt, though her arching posture was ever so intruding. "I heard there's a thief here. I knew a lot of thieves once." she began to explain, though it was apparent that her inner monologue hid some crucial parts for the story to become coherent. "...so I thought I'd come by and take a look?" She finished her rambling with a confused smile, only for Shuppet to budge in, fed up with her trainer's schtick.

"Shup-shuppet!"

"Oh, how rude of me. This is Ophelia." Zoey stated and motioned to her Shuppet. "So - Did you find the thief yet? Is he or she scary, by any chance?" She just now realized that both the girl as well as the boy seemed a little taken back by her. Zoey blushed. Her hand quickly shot into her purse. "I am very sorry, my manners..." she said, her expression dispersed. She pulled out a little bowl with individually wrapped candies.

"Please, take as many as you like." she said with a sweet smile. "Maybe then we could chase the thief?"

Josiah's eyes found Bell's as the girl with green hair spoke of finding the thief. His mouth quirked into lazy smirk as he scooped a handful of candy from the bowl, amused at the fact that she was carrying around a bowl of candy, and put them in his jacket pockets. These would be useful for bribing Bell later. Bell started to cackle at the girl from Josiah's shoulder. She fell sideways from his shoulder, but Josiah caught her just in time.

"Thanks, but I don't think we need to chase the thief. The thief," he said as he indicated to the laughing sneasel in his arms, "is already caught. Sorry if we caused too much of a ruckus." Josiah hadn't been expecting to be enjoying himself so much in Pendulum City. Not even ten minutes had past and Bell already caused trouble that wasn't (for once) too much of a pain to deal with. On top of that, a girl had suddenly appeared right behind his shoulder, not knowing the full situation. He was surprised, but didn't really mind. It was a bit amusing to see the girl blushing and offering them candy.

"Thanks for the candy," he said gratefully, unwrapping one and popping it in his mouth. He put a now calm Bell on his shoulders and stuff his hands in his pockets, not allowing her access to any of the candy as punishment for stealing so clumsily. Josiah introduced himself to the girls while Bell climbed down to his waist to try to get to the candy. "My name is Josiah, and this is my partner Bell."

Aven

Aven was one of those who arrived early and was currently engaged in a battle, his Growlithe battling a Ladyba. The grass type was at a disadvantage and already wounded from an early attack. Aven took advantage and sought to end this battle quickly. "Praesidis, use ember!" The fire dog jumped back and launched an ember attack at the Ladyba, hitting its mark. Unable to recover the Ladyba fainted and was called back into its Poke Ball to be healed later. Aven knelt down and smiled, petting his young companion on his head. "You did great buddy, time to go back." His friend made a cute happy sound as Aven held up his Poke Ball and returned Growlithe inside, placing Ball back on his belt after it shrank.

Aven stood back up and walked over to the trainer he had just defeated, a stoic look replacing his happy face.
"Next time, think before you insult someone. They might not be as nice as I am." Aven snatched his winnings from the challenger and walked off into the crowd, looking through all the food vendors for something tantalizing. He stopped when he saw a dango shop and walked up to stand in line, finally ordering some teriyaki dango to go. Moving on he wandered around the festival and stopped every so often to look at the Pokemon clothing, food, and even live Pokemon for sale.

Soft gaze of umber traces the loaded crowd with a muted attentiveness. Gardenia had warned her that Pendulum City on Rookie Day is always packed, touching shoulders with your neighbours, shoved to the side, and squeezed in ways you never knew. Florence had taken her words for granted. ❛ Freud, ❜ she called, searching the skies above Pendulum for the familiar cardinal-coloured Pokémon lined with rings of sloe.

The Ledyba darted out from a nearby food stall, panic written on it's aphid face. ❛
Leyyy! ❜ He descended onto Florence, picking up her tacky straw-hat with a few cries of hastiness, and demanded that she follow with an air-foot stomp. Matisse gave a huff of annoyance from the arms of it's trainer. The botanist only laughed at the Deerling and followed, weaving her way through the crowd with her eyes on the welkin and apologies given to trainers she bumped shoulders with.

At last, Freud fell next to her shoulder, still holding tightly onto her hat; he loved her hat for some quirky reason. ❛
Leyyy! ❜ he demanded again, angling his body towards a trainer battle taking place only a few feet away from them. A Growlithe and another Ledyba, evidently having been fainted and defeated.

Freud felt for his kind, that's why he urged her to follow.

❛ It lost, ❜ Florence explained. ❛ Grass is weak to fire—it's no surprise the match was so one-sided. ❜

Eleanor Rivers

Ellen watched the boy turn back to the other person. For a moment she considered that perhaps they knew each other and she had been silly to point out that the other girl was there... But the boy's question reassured her that her observation was not completely out of place. For once.

Seeing how she found herself engaged in a conversation with two strangers, Ellen decided to put some trust into the one met first. The few seconds of an advantage that he had over the green-haired girl somehow made him seem more trustworthy. As the lady talked, the blonde stayed hidden behind the back of the Sneasel trainer. Not only was that her original position, but that way she could also use the boy as a human shield to protect her from... She didn't really know what she could be protected from, but it was better not to risk it.

And then the other girl offered something. Instinctively, Ellen peeked out from behind the boy to check up on what it was. She had a good feeling... And bingo! It was candy. Ellen had to admit that it was an interesting offer, but she worried that it'd be rude to just go ahead and take a free treat. The young trainer didn't even consider the potential dangers of taking candy from strangers, the possible threat of coming off as rude was a bigger issue to her. Her internal struggle continued for a moment, before Artemis made the decision for her: he pressed his paws against her calves, pushing the girl towards the green-haired lady. She stumbled, blushed and silently grabbed a single piece of candy while avoiding eye contact.

"Thank you," she said quietly, following in Josiah's footsteps. She had long learned that when in doubt, she should just do what others do and hope for the best. "I'm Eleanor. And these are my partners: Artemis and Michifu."

Upon their names being mentioned, the two pokemon sent friendly smileys at the other humans and their partners. Artemis stepped forward to take a better look at Bell and the Shuppet. Between him, Ellen and Michifu, he was easily the most social one.

Emmet Slater

"Got that right...."

Emmet caught a whiff of cigarette smoke with these words, and for a moment he was thrown through time. He was fifteen again, his hair was blue-green. He was sitting on a wooden crate with other delinquents, around the corner from a sleazy bar where they were waiting for an older friend to bring back a girl, or some drinks, or both.

The guys made fun of him for drawing, but Roscoe paid him good money (for a fifteen year old kid) to design his tattoo. The last time he ever saw Roscoe, it was at the cove just outside Liliycove City. Crushed by a Wailmer, everyone said, but the gang knew he had gone and joined some fancy mafia. Besides, Emmet lied about recognizing the tattoo.

The man blinked, and looked around the tree at the young lady who had piped up, wondering if she had been talking to him. She must have, because she was also looking around the tree, at him. She reminded him of a little of different friends he used to have, and he wondered if these were the kind of people that his baby would be travelling with across the region. He hoped not.

She also didn’t look old enough to be a parent like him, and she had a Pokémon with her. Lacking any other information, Emmet chose to assume she was a trainer of some sort.

“… Is that a local brand?” He smoked for a short time as a young man, but quit when Garnet came along. “Ah, no, never mind. Don’t mind me. I just said goodbye to my daughter, and I’m… out of sorts.”

Shut up Emmet, she didn’t ask for your life story. She didn’t even ask anything at all, all she did was scoff and agree with him.

Zoey Gibson

Zoey was let down. Her head began to hang a little, and she tilted it to the right. Nevertheless, she smiled through the disappointment valiantly and extended the sweets to the girl whose Eevee seemed a little more daring that its trainer.

"My pleasure. You can take more if you like." she said, now taking a handful of the candies herself, unwrapping them all and, unfitting to her slim and frail appearance, seemed to gulp them down with few bites or licks. As she audibly swallowed, the expression of a teacher suddenly creeped into her face. "It is actually very dangerous to take candies from strangers!" she scolded the two in a lecturing tone that lacked emphasis. As abruptly as the change of attitude came about, it vanished and made room for a smile. "Nice to meet you, Josiah and Eleanor and Bell and Artemis and Michifu. My name is Zoey. And this is..." she began and gestured towards the Shuppet, only to stare at her partner, her small mouth standing open. "How redundant of me."

She hovered mid-motion for a moment before turning to face the two teenagers once more.
"Well, if there is no thief here, I suppose I shall get on my way. Does either of you two happen to know where the labratory of Miss Willow is?"

Shuppet flung around, levitating around and behind her trainer's legs. Ophelia had always been a reserved little one, and so she nodded to the Eevee with a slick and tiny smile.

Sawyer

Visually Sawyer thought she saw all she needed to see. First impressions were big to here and she'd be the first to judge a book by the front and back covers. Another modern 'gotta fit in' nu type guy ready to be offended at a slight breeze or possibly another guy who put women up on a pedestal and thought she'd need saving. Truth be told, it may have been just the visceral reaction she was having towards his hat alone.

What saved her impression of him though, was his very nearly rambling statement. This wasn't some guy faffing around. He was either A) Dropping his trainer kid off and unsure of what to do next now that he just dumped the responsibilities of life on them or B) He was going through some sort of quater/mid life crisis and was being a bit overwhelmed. Either way, he managed to make Sawyer smile a little as she pulled out the pack she was given to check brand.

"Tattler brand? Must be local, they taste like it. A bit too clean, like the city ya'know?" She pushes a single cigarette out with her finger, offering it while retaking her leaning stance on the tree, only now beside him. What can she say, her curiosity was piqued.

"So, your daughter? Trainer or are you some old creep ready to go accost kids in national parks for battles?" It was a dumb stereotype, not even that, just something she remembered reading about in the stories of the trainers who made it big. If she made it that far in life, no way would she be some sixty year old not allowing kids to pass until they beat her in a pokemon battle. Hopefully she'd have something better going on.

After enjoying his dango he walked up behind the woman who had observed the end of his battle, tapping her on the shoulder gently.
"Your Pokemon's crys were distracting during my battle." He couldn't help but stare at her straw hat for a moment before casting his gaze toward her face. He wasn't trying to be rude or abrasive, but he wasn't exactly trying not to be either. "Anyway, you should be careful having two lose at once. There can be those who prowl these events looking to steal your Pokemon, just a friendly warning." He turned slowly and walked off into the crowd, hands placed in his pockets.

Aven meandered through the crowds bumping shoulders with people who grunted and complained, looking through the games and stuffed Pokemon prizes.
"What a waste of time, and money." He stopped and watched a young child get conned out of his allowance by an out of town carnie, a "tch" escaping Aven's lips. "Little brat should know better." He just happened to have stopped where the candy transaction was going on and overhead one of the girls ask where the lab was. He turned and rudely entered their conversation, his tone was a little sharp. " It's the building behind the stage, at the North end of the festival."

He paused for a moment and looked around at all their faces and then to the Pokemon outside their balls. He suddenly felt bad for leaving Praesidis all cooped up all day and pressed the button on his Poke Ball to release him.
"Hey buddy, I'm sorry." He reached down and gently caressed Growlithe's head who barked happily and leaned into it. "Anyway, I'm heading to the lab myself. Albeit a little slowly if you would like to join me." He sounded a little hesitant but followed through nonetheless, waiting for a response.

He nodded in greeting as he tried to pick Bell off of his clothes. The fabric was stretching from Bell's attached claws, so he promptly gave up. Apparently, he didn't need to try to get her off because she hopped off of him and started making pokemon noises. He could never understand what they were saying even if he tried. To the pokemon, Bell said something like this: "Yeah! We're gonna go explore the world!"

"Well, if there is no thief here, I suppose I shall get on my way. Does either of you two happen to know where the labratory of Miss Willow is?"

Josiah shook his head. How was he supposed to know that? He took a brief look around the place, but with how many people were in here already, it was hard to tell where he was.

"By the way. What exactly are we supposed to be doing here?"

Eleanor Rivers

Upon hearing the invitation to take more candy, Ellen helped herself, taking another few pieces. She was about drop them into her pocket for later, when she heard the warning about taking candy from strangers. The blonde froze and gave it a little consideration before deciding that it would have been awkward to give up on the candy she'd already taken, so she hid it in her blouse's pocket regardless. At the same time, she was trying to keep track of all the names. Josiah, Zoey, Bell and... She didn't quite catch the Shuppet's name.

Before answering Zoey's question, Ellen waited for Josiah. Only then she realized that given how bad she was at reading maps, she really should had checked ahead of time. This was bad. At this rate, she would end up having to ask for directions... Unless she was to stick around these two. Going over her options quickly, the girl decided that clinging to either of these people was less intimidating than chatting up a stranger. At least she already knew their names.

But it didn't seem like Josiah knew where the lab was nor what else they could do either. Ellen shook her head as well, biting her lips nervously to express her shame.
"Maybe we could look for the lab," she suggested in an unnaturally high-pitched voice. "It would be something to do, right?"

Upon hearing Bell's answer, Artemis' tail began wagging even faster.
"That's awesome! We're gonna do that too! And we'll be super strong! Have you started training yet?"

Zoey Gibson

It took her a moment to come up with an answer to Josiah's question. She looked confused, then replaced her expression with yet another polite smile.

"I imagine we will receive a Pokedex and an authorized entry in the Network." Zoey thought out loud, bringing up her hand to her chin and tapping her index finger on her cheek. "At least, in Hoenn, new trainers receive a Pokedex when they begin to venture out. But... Occas seems a little different, so who knows..."

The green-haired girl noticed Eleanor's insecurity how to stow away the candy, and flashed her a smile, though her enthusiastic attempt to make the girl comfortable ended up a slightly eerie grin instead, similar to when she first had joined the group.
"Yes, that sounds good." she answered Eleanor, gracefully ignoring the high pitch of her voice. "Pendulum seems rather interesting, do you not think so? It must be quite fun to... Oh?" Her attention shifted as a tall man with a Growlithe approached them.

Her head and gaze shifted along with his words, eyeing the building he proclaimed to be the labratory.
"Why thank you, good sir." she said, giving him a smile as well. She turned to face Josiah and Elanor once more, and gestured for Ophelia to come close to her, luring her in with a motion of her index finger. "Why don't we go together?"

Josiah almost quirked an eyebrow at Eleanor. What was that squeaky voice? Was that her normal voice?

"Pendulum seems rather interesting, do you not think so? It must be quite fun to... Oh?"

Confused, Josiah's eyes drifted over to where Zoey seemed to be looking at. A male trainer strode over to where they stood together with his... dog-like pokemon. He'd never been good with pokemon names, but he knew that this one was a fire type.

"I think..."

This trainer, at least, knew where the lab was. He agreed with Ophelia with a nod of his head.

"Bell," he called out. After a quick glance at Josiah, she turned back to her new pokemon companions.

"Nice talkin' with you guys!" She leaped onto Josiah's head and settled onto his shoulders. "Onward!" Bell called out.

Ellen gave a proud smile as Zoey agreed with her idea. It had costed her a lot to speak up like that, but these two seemed pretty welcoming so far. The girl planned to stick with them. At least for the duration of their stay in Pendulum.

She was still a bit concerned about roaming the unknown city with Josiah and Zoey in search of the lab. Who knows how long it would take? How much time would she have to spend struggling to be part of a conversation? Fortunately for Ellen, and likely the rest of the group, a man came to their rescue. Ellen welcomed his help with a sigh of relief, at the same time glancing at his pokemon with curiosity. Was that a Vulpix? No, it had those stripes... A Growlithe. She adored fire types. And most other types, anyway. The girl noticed that her Eevee tilted his head with interest as he stared at the Growlithe.

"Yes, I think we should go to the lab! Together,"
Ellen agreed eagerly with the rest of the group, letting her inner enthusiasm slip out. Perhaps the whole "talking to unknown people" business was rather scary to her, but it was still a part of her journey. She had to get used to it. Or at least suck it up until she was out of the city.

Expecting a longer walk ahead, the girl leaned down to pick up Michifu and keep her in her arms. With how short her paws were, the Espurr could easily get lost. Meanwhile Artemis stayed on the ground, curiously approaching the Growlithe.
"You're a fire pokemon, right? What's that like?" He asked vaguely with innocent interest.
