December 21, 2054
Humans at their core were rotten, and Valerie was no exception. In her quest to achieve her end and aim in life โ€” wealth and power โ€” sheโ€™d convinced herself that the end justifies the means. Throwing away her morality was the price she paid for success, and with that, she locked her heart away in a cage of steel. Somewhere along the road, she'd lost the key.

Worse was the realization that she'd spent all these years living for herself alone, discounting everything and everyone that didn't serve or benefit her. She was but a fragment of her past self. Whenever she looked in the mirror, only a stranger gazed back with a pair of golden eyes carved out of bleakness. She recalled how those very same eyes used to shine with warmth and passion.

Valerieโ€™s mind wandered back to seven years ago, when she had just left the Corps with nothing to her name. No rank, no title, no achievements that truly mattered in the real world. She felt empty, but within that emptiness, a bright flame burned inside of her. It was a drive and hunger for success. She wanted everything or nothing. Deathโ€™s sweet embrace seemed more welcoming than the sour aftertaste of failure.

A lingering question plagued the back of her mind. Was all of it worth it? To live in luxury knowing that lives had to be ruined โ€” perhaps lost โ€” to get here? She still couldnโ€™t come up with an answer after all these years. The choices she'd made in the past still kept her awake at night, like vengeful ghosts haunting her consciousness.

โ€œOne espresso for Miss Valerie?โ€

A voice pulled her away from her thoughts and brought her back to the present moment. She absentmindedly reached out to grab her drink, but her instincts blared like a fire alarm, urging her to look back. Valerie whipped around, and her reflexes kicked in โ€” a leg shot up, her heel connecting with the object coming toward her. It flew and crashed against the wall behind the counter, barely missing the barista.

All eyes were on the two as a series of gasps rose above the general chatter, and a moment of silence settled into the cafe. With a deep scowl etched on Valerieโ€™s face, her eyes trailed upward to meet the person responsible for soiling her shoe. A flash of recognition followed, and her memories stirred. She could never forget the face of someone who had gotten on her nerves more times than she could count.

"Looks like a little gray mouse had wandered its way into the cafe... Talk about health protocols?" She sneered.

Before he could open his mouth to respond, Valerie grabbed him by the collar and dragged him outside of the building, shoving him roughly once they were away from prying eyes and ears. โ€œSo, tell me. What brings this pompous prince to Japan? Demon shortage in Europe?โ€ Her lips curled upward, her eyes cold and mocking.

From a distance, they could hear the fitful sobs of an elderly woman who was handing out flyers for her missing son. Spotting the two, the old woman made her way over and, with trembling hands, handed each of them a flier, breaking the tension between the two if only for a moment.

Hearing the girl's response, Yume couldn't help but let a sigh escape her lips. This was all a major shift in plans. Turning herself away from Ally, she brought a hand up to rub her temples as she tried to think of the best course of action. Going through with her own business likely wasn't it. If her possible source of information found out she was dragging a demon along with her, she'd be looked down upon. Maybe even seen as a hypocrite. Here she was searching for a specific demon all while having another with her. It didn't paint a very good image for her.

As much as she didn't want to abandon things here, it was probably for the better if she did. Grimacing at the thought, Yume slid her hand down the bridge of her nose before rubbing beneath her eyes. Things really could never go the way she wanted them to, could they?

Shaking it off, she turned herself back towards the other girl and slowly unzipped her own jacket, shrugging it off to reveal the pale orange slayer uniform that was underneath. It wasn't a typical uniform, but it at least had enough resemblance to it. That was more than enough for Yume, though the slayers who preferred more traditional uniforms would likely have objections to it. Not that she cared what they thought anyways. Holding the hooded jacket out to Ally, she gave the girl a stern look before speaking. "Put this on," she ordered, the friendliness in her voice disappearing once again. Hints of irritation were present in how she spoke, but she never formally stated such. "You'll wear this until we get back to the resort I'm stay at. We'll figure out what we're gonna do once we get there because I can't bring you along to what I need to do while looking like you are."

Maybe her words were a bit too harsh, but that was the reality of the ordeal. As long as Ally couldn't hide her ears or tails, being seen by anyone was out of the question, unless they were going to some convention, which was far from what they were currently doing, thus brushing any of it off as a cosplay wouldn't fly. Besides, if it was a cosplay, then what was her excuse for having a lackluster outfit? She had none. There was no way around it except retreating and giving herself more time to deal figure out a concrete plan. Was there even a concrete plan to be had? All this was being done from the goodness of her own heart, and while the thought of using this demon to her advantage had crossed her mind, she wasn't sure if it'd actually pan out that way.

It was all a mess. Then again, that was how Yume's life usually went. It wouldn't be her life unless it had some disorder to it. It kept her on her toes after all, and always forced her to find new solutions. Maybe this wasn't the time for wanting that though.

Not lingering on it for all, Yume turned once more once her jacket had been taken and she gestured in the direction she had originally come from. "We'll head that way and take the lift back to the resort near the mountains, okay?"

Ranto Benjiro, Pillar of Rain
The dark storm clouds roiled in the distance, slowly building up a momentum of sleet and snow that threatened to engulf the resort in the coming hours. Hugging the sides of one of the snow covered mountains was a ski lift, closed for maintenance, but placed at the perfect location to allow someone to observe the resort and town. The lift chairs swayed in the bitter wind, the steel cables supporting them groaning under the stress but holding. Indeed, for Benjiro's purposes the ski lift would do for now to protect him from the elements and give him a moment to assess the situation. The Rain Pillar looked down upon the resort, frowning from under his straw hat.

He could taste them.

A rotten, spoiled flavor laced with iron and blood. Demons. The resort was filled with them, and even despite the snows dampening of his ability he felt a spoiled frown take ahold of his face. He knew that rumors had gotten out throughout the Corps of the disappearances, which meant that there was a high chance 'sanctioned' Demons had beaten him here first. Were he alone he had no doubt he could sift through the masses of humanity and the wilds to root out the Demonic scourge but with so much white noise dancing on his tongue...

A quiet part of him spoke up in their defense, saying how they were trying to help and how valuable Demons were in combating other Demons.

He ruthlessly quashed it. Better men than him have put their faith in Demons and look where that got them. Dead and gone.

He allowed himself a moment to lament at the state of the Corps, of how few Slayers of worthy status remained before refocusing on the resort. He could not afford to wallow in his misery for too long. He had a job to do.

The sound of cawing caught his attention, and Benjiro pushed aside his wool cloak and raised a padded glove to receive the crow. The wind, ruthless as it was, didn't hesitate to flow into the gap in Benjiro's defenses, making his hair stand on end even despite his Haori and Slayer uniform layered underneath. The bird landed with a heavy thump, flapping it's wings to shake the snow off while angrily cooing towards the Hashira.

"Yes, yes, poor you. What did you see?"

The crow grumbled before hopping up the length of Benjiro's arm until it ducked under his straw hat and began making noises in his ear. As the crow 'spoke' to it's master, Benjiro's eyes drifted over to the resort and he felt an icy hot hatred begin to take ahold of his heart.

There you are.

His eyes snapped to the side as the crow relayed some more information, processing it before tasting the air again. No, Yorokobi wasn't incorrect. He could taste them. The sharp pop of sulphur, like fireworks. Pure white snow, far more chilling than any conventional dust sprinkled from the heavens. And thunder. Only a handful of people held the power of the Thunder form under their belt and someone this strong, and her description meant it was most likely her. Yet, she was with Heath. Benjiro's grip on his sword tightened until his knuckles turned white under his gloves. Out of all the people he could be associating with he chose her? After what he did? He knew not what Valerie's goal here was or why she was collaborating with a murderer- no, with a monster as he always was, but that mattered little. She was here, and he was here, and Benjiro would not let Heath slip out of his fingers yet again.
The other Demons and Slayers were of little consequence and could handle the Demonic threat on their own. If not, then Benjiro would have no choice but to respond. As much as he yearned for justice, he was not blinded enough by it to shirk his duties. A slayer protected the people, first and foremost.

Even if it meant letting Heath go, after so much searching? This may be our last chance to get him.

Yorokobi sat on Benjiro's shoulder as he thought to himself.

"Then so be it." Yorokobi turned to stare at him. "Oh shut it. Talking to you is far odder than talking to myself. Return to observing the Resort and report back if anything significant occurs. I will reconnoiter the area."

He let Yorokobi loose to return to the cold elements. He wasn't going to barge in and attack Heath. Not while his allies were unknown and innocents surrounded him. For now, he would hang back and observe the situation. Perhaps end the Demon murderer before confronting Heath if he had the chance. Regardless, he needed more information before striking for both his missions of duty and justice.

Benjiro closed his eyes, before taking a deep breath. Then he moved. To the untrained eye he simply vanished, but even to the trained eye he was fast.

Leaping away from the ski lift, Benjiro landed into the snow drifts with a slide but kept up a sprinting pace. Full Concentration Breathing kept the cold out of his bones and allowed the Hashira to push his body to new heights, his wool cloak and Haori fluttering behind him. He practically glided down the mountain making sharp turns on a dime to avoid fallen tree's and boulders. If one were to see him from a distance, they'd think him to be skiing at a recklessly fast pace.

Beneath his straw hat, Benjiro's eyes stared directly ahead of him filled with resolute determination. It would seem before the Blizzard, the Rain would come.

Ryuji stands confused after the demon blatantly ignores his question instead just walking away like nothing happened , like the kid wasnโ€™t even there. โ€œ damn it , I came here to take down whoever is abducting people , not to get ignored by the people Iโ€™m supposed to be working withโ€ Ryuji says to himself . the kid buys the clothing he picked out before stepping out and back into the main room of the hotel , maybe he should get a room if heโ€™s planning to stay here long.

Ryuji walks up to one of the reception disk with his mind still trying to understand how people could be abducted here , itโ€™s a big place thatโ€™s full of people , how does no one notice demons taking people away. โ€œsir , your room keyโ€ the receptionist says , โ€œoh yeah thanksโ€ Ryuji answers grabbing the key putting it in his pocket . the kid quickly makes his way up the stairs and into his room , โ€œroom number 32 , yup , this should be itโ€ he thinks opening to door before throwing his bags inside and changing into something a bit more , normal , he made the mistake of walking in demon slayer clothing last time , heโ€™s not making the same mistake again. He walks out shutting the door behind him before stepping into the hall , time to check each floor for anything that could cause problems.

Taking the coat, she barely grazed Yumeโ€™s hand, the single touch told her many things in that moment. Troubled. Anxious. Ally could see her new companion in a different light now, perhaps even to her own dismay. There was kindness, between the grimacing looks and guarded composure, but full of second guessing. Mostly due to the situation in its entirety, though Ally still felt responsible for the troubles she brought on for this girl. Slipping on the jacket, She tried to stuff her tail up beneath it, working just a little bit to resemble a backpack underneath. Nodding in response to make their way to the lift, Ally attempted rework her hair, trying to cover up her new ears. Admittedly, her final product felt weird, and surely looked odd but would do the trick to cover her ears. A mix of braids and folds at least kept them poking out, and covered them fairly well enough.

Following Yume towards the lift, Ally contemplated more about her new company. Said her name is Usagi, oddly the name was familiar, but she couldnโ€™t place it entirely. Though their relationship seems pretty rocky at the moment, Ally hoped Usagi would become a good friend. Could Demons and Slayers be friends? Supposed she could prove to be a good demon? โ€˜Shoot is that even a thing?โ€™ She thought to herself, biting on her thumb in deep thought. Questions for later. First priority for the moment; Not be a Hindrance for Usagi! She pondered the thought for a second, slumping into a gloomy disposition, already off to a bad start all things considered.

Getting to the lift, Ally hoped in, and sat down in a seat. Closing her eyes to focus, becoming convinced she had to have some way of becoming less conspicuous. She wondered how long the lift ride would take, hoping it was long enough to come up with a solution. Through her constant inner thoughts, Ally became unaware of the change she went through. Shrinking down into a small โ€˜poofโ€™, her form was hidden under Yumeโ€™s jacket on the seat. A small black nose poked out from under the jacket, her voice sounded from underneath. โ€œMmmm, think Ally, thinkโ€ฆโ€ As she spoke underneath the jacket, a bushy reddish tail flopped out from under, swishing back and forth with her thoughts.

FANG GUIYING
KINOTO

It was a look Fang had known all too well. In his youth, he had learned to seek out this look, to find the telltale signs of experience etched into its lines and curves. The most salient of which was the subtle widening of the eyes, or the craning of the neck; the unmistakable look of recognition. He saw it now in the cerulean blue eyes of Heath. Those eyes became a tempestuous sea as the mind beneath them sifted through its archives. As the elevator doors closed with a resounding click, his own curiosity drove him to cast a second glance at the mysterious figure beside him.

Though at first the man beside him appeared human, there were subtle visual cues that betrayed his otherworldly nature. There was a certain stillness to the man, a calm and measured demeanor that belied the roiling tempest that Fang could sense beneath the surface. And as Fang gazed into his eyes, he saw there a depth that seemed to stretch on forever, a window into a world beyond the veil of human perception.

Heath's recognition of the dark-haired man had reassured Fang that there was no immediate danger, yet the enclosed space and the uncertainty of their situation still put him on edge. Fang had learned the hard way that danger could strike at any moment, and he had made it his mission to always be prepared. To ensure his preparedness, he made a habit of keeping a Nichirin Katana hidden somewhere on his person at all times.

Nayaka Akame. As the name slipped from Heath's lips, Fang's mind grasped hold of it, weaving it deftly into the fabric of his memory. He felt a stirring in Heathโ€™s heart at its utterance, a curiosity was born in him of the knowledge that this name held a significance far beyond what he could perceive. He pondered if the name was connected in some way to the figures from his hair salon story. For there was a similar tenderness to his tone as he told it.

Fang approached the elevator panel, his hand hovering over the glowing assortment of buttons. With a sense of purpose, he pressed the button leading to the Hot Springs, feeling a small jolt of anticipation as he did so. He could already feel the steam rising and he could already hear the gentle sound of water bubbling up from the depths below.

Fang turned to face the stranger, his gaze heavy with suspicion and apprehension. "Weโ€™re headed to the hot springs," he said, his voice low and measured. His first words to the stranger held a palpable air of frantic energy to the tone, a sense of urgency and anxiety. But now as he spoke, the timbre of his voice shifted, transforming into something more purposeful and direct, with an undercurrent of hostility coursing through each word. Fang's intense gaze took in the demon's features, absorbing every detail with an unyielding focus. The lines and contours of the demon's face were etched into Fang's mind with the precision of a master artist, every feature committed to memory.

His eyes held the demon's in a fierce, unyielding gaze, with an unspoken challenge hidden beneath them. Fang's voice was laced with a sarcastic snarl, a cutting edge to his words as he spoke to the red-eyed demon. "I'd be careful if I were you. There are rumors of monsters lurking about these parts.โ€ he warned, "and I suspect that they eat people."

Markus
Markus never had much of a childhood. Where other kids swung wooden swords at each other and played with dolls, Markus wielded actual steel and carved away at training mannequins with skills no child had any business learning at that age. While others were rewarded with potato chips and all the candy they could eat, Markus was constantly reminded of the legacy he was born into, the legacy he needed to uphold, the legacy he had to use to protect mankind.

So it was a happy surprise when Frederick went overseas to visit their demon slaying brethren in Japan, and brought along his heir. Markus had never been outside of Western Germany, much less seen the coastline of the North Sea; flying out of the country was a first for him. Even though they booked Economy to help blend in with the masses โ€“ with the cramped spaces and subpar food โ€“ Markus enjoyed the experience. He sat still and silent throughout the entire flight, but all that time his eyes were glued to the window, to the neverending canvas of ocean blue, swathed with clouds like feathery brushstrokes.

The land of the rising sun also had its share of firsts for him: the first time he saw cherry blossom petals in a flurry from the passing wind; the first bowl of ramen that left him sweaty and red; the first sip of ceremonial matcha, which he wouldโ€™ve spit out had it not been prepared by their gracious hosts. And as a child, most memorable to him were the first two friends he ever made outside of the Graymane estates.

One of them was there in front of him, kicking away the unfortunate mug of coffee with all the skill he remembered from past sparring sessions. Valerie Knight, the first person who broke him out of his shell. Valerie, the girl whose smile was infectious and annoying and warm. Valerie, who bore no hint whatsoever of that smile, only sharp edges and a scowl.

Her words were the same bantering insults they had thrown at each other as children, but her tone held none of the brightness he had come to associate with the girlโ€“ no, woman. Valerie Knight was a woman, and Markus, to his annoyance, was all too aware of it. He scowled in return, which deepened into a frown when he was dragged like a foot squire who missed his morning calls. Only when they were outside did he pull away from Valerieโ€™s grip, folding his arms and glowering at the woman and her barbed words. It wasnโ€™t enough that he lost what could have been the first good cup of coffee of the day, but here he was, out in the night with a blizzard threatening the horizon, with the steely-eyed girl โ€“ no, woman, he first felt affection for.

โ€œI donโ€™t need to explain myself to you,โ€ Markus answered, his voice as cold as winter. โ€œAll you need to know is that Iโ€™m here for a good reason.โ€ His mouth curled up into a sneer. โ€œWhat are you doing here, so far from your lofty mansions?โ€

At the back of his mind, the words he wanted to say were completely different, but they were for another time, and another place, both of which may never arrive in his lifetime. He settled with silent hostility, waiting to see who cracked first. In the end, the standoff was interrupted by an elderly woman who handed each of them a flier. A cursory glance showed a pitiable attempt at wrangling image editing software to make a passable infographic on the events surrounding the resort. But it wasnโ€™t the garing colors or the too-large letters that caught his attention; no, it was the small, English section of the flier that spoke of a man entering the hot springs at night, and never coming back out.

Markus looked back up at Valerie, still unsure of her reasons for coming to this place. But if she was anything like him still, she was there for the same thing he was. Valerie Knight was more valuable as an ally than an estranged friend. โ€œFancy a trip to the hot springs?โ€ Markus asked, the hint of coyness playing along his words. โ€œI hear the waters melt away the stresses and the cold like nothing else.โ€

Silently, he wished that it would also melt this wall that had come up between them in the few short minutes of their reunion. It would be nice to have a friend again, after all this time.

In the mere moments that Keiji stood in the elevator with the three young men, it became abundantly clear that he was in the presence of those much more keen than a mere passerby. One a demon, and the other more likely than not, a slayer. He could not prove his theory, but it was obvious from the way the human's body tensed in realization, eyes laser-focused on Keiji's; they were not here for a simple vacation in the mountains. This was to be expected, considering the increasing disappearances and how they drew the attention of many.

The old demon found it rather rude that the trio stayed so quiet and observant. That was, until the white-haired demon leaned in and uttered a name he had not heard in nearly a decade.

Akame.. Oh, Akame.

Crimson eyes remain steady, posture poised as ever. Not even a flinch from the elder demon would be given away to the boy beside him, now easily recognizable to the librarian.

Heath..

A mop of raven locks that bounced between shelfs of priceless scripture, nearly toppling one-of-a-kind statues in the name of curiosity. A keen eye with redundant questions. A boy cursed with a stubborn mother. It made sense now that Keiji recognized that face. It was a provider of much stress years ago. Nevertheless, this knowledge would remain with himself.

"I'm afraid it means nothing to me, but I do seem to linger in your memory. You've heard of my library, then?" A knowing smile lifted a corner of his lips, easing the awfully polite air he gave off. It was wrong to deny the son validation of his claim, but it needed to be done. Keiji did not have time for reunions. Nor would they do him any good, now. "You are more than welcome to pay me a visit, the three of you." Maybe he'd understand, but now was not the time for confrontation.

Almost as if on cue, the elevator's bell rang, signifying that they had reached the fourth floor. Despite Keiji's attempts at keeping the air in the elevator light, a pair of heterochromatic eyes stared him down with a palpable disdain.

"I'd be careful if I were you. There are rumors of monsters lurking about these parts." The golden elevator doors opened, revealing the fourth floor in all it's dimly-lit glory. Keiji looked over to the boy, humoring his sarcastic remarks, "...and I suspect they eat people." The demon let out a deep chuckle that reverberated through his chest, seeming oddly loud compared to the quiet atmosphere in the elevator. What bravery! Or was it ignorance?

How could he blame them? Not many demons have made it to live to his old age, nor have slayers. A level of comfort is felt amongst the younger slayer community. Unwavering confidence from the inexperienced. Taking long strides out of the elevator, Keiji spun around one last time, facing them,

"I do not know if you were made aware, but.." He bent downward slightly, holding a hand up at his mouth to signify that he was sharing private information, "The one with white hair might be one of them!" Standing back up, he smiled politely, letting the doors closed as he spoke up, "But you knew that, didn't you?" His tone mirrored the sarcasm and mockery of the slayer's, which was a bit unlike Keiji.

An amused smile soon lowered itself back down to a mild grimace. It was back to business, then. Turning to face the hallway, Keiji eventually found the door to room number four, and made his way inside.

The whole walk to the lift was silent, which was unusual for someone like Yume. Even when they arrived, she stayed relatively quiet, only briefly talking to the worker running the lift. After confirming it was only her and Ally, she once again fell into the same silence as before. While it did bother her, she knew it was for the better. Her mind was trying to wrap around everything that had happened after all, and if she was even making the right decision. Was she supposed to show mercy to demons? No, yet she hardly had hesitated to strike a deal with one. It was a choice she could not make sense of. Usually she was ruthless when it came to dealing with such. Why was this different?

Shaking her head, Yume slid down in her place on the lift and quietly combed her fingers through her bangs as she continued to ponder the thought. Perhaps she was too soft upon hearing this other had ties to the corps. It seemed silly to care about such a thing, yet she had. Such things should have never mattered. She should have swiftly put the girl out of her misery and moved on with her own mission, but instead she found herself doing just about the opposite. Maybe her drive was truly gone. After everything that had occurred two weeks ago, it was no surprise. If anything, she had become a shell of herself since then. Was it for the better or worse though? She didn't know the answer to that.

Lifting her gaze for a moment, the young slayer quietly looked towards her new companion. Yume could only imagine what she might be feeling or even thinking. Was she even grateful that she had been spared? There was no telling. Besides, such was a heavy topic to think over. Even she had a difficult time figuring out exactly what she would want in the same position. Not that it even mattered.

Her gaze momentarily drifted away as her own train of thought continue on, but it wasn't for long. As her head turned back, and she was prepared to address the other, she was taken by surprise when she didn't see the girl there. Eyes widening, Yume's head cocked in confusion as he eyes frantically flickered downwards, half expecting to see the girl falling from the lift, but instead, she was met with an even stranger sight.

Staring at the snout peaking out from under her jacket, along with a bushy tail, Yume was unsure how to react. For a moment, all she could do was sit still, eyeing the scene with a shocked look on her face. No sounds could escape her throat. She was completely dumbfounded. Her confusion was only added to as the creature spoke in the same voice the girl had.

"W-what the hell?!" she finally exclaimed. It was all she could muster in her confusion, and rightfully so. What was happening before her was by no means a natural occurrence and Yume herself hardly had time to comprehend it. Everything about this day was only getting stranger and stranger.

Startled by Yume's sudden outburst, the nose jumped in surprise, pointing around frantically. "Ah what, what! AHH I-i can't see!" Ally fumbled around, still covered by the jacket. She fell over, away from Yume, uncovering herself from the jacket and falling the lift floor. Giving a shake unconsciously, Ally huffed standing up before noticing the drastic change in height. Glancing around, she met Yume's startled gaze. "Uh, you were not always that tall, how'd you..." She trailed off as she started to notice her changes, noticing the tip of a black nose in her eyesight. Doing a little turn, and giving herself a once over confirm it, Ally fell into a sitting position. "Usagi... we gotta remain calm, but i'm pretty sure I just turned into a fox..." She breathed out, attempting to sound reassuring, more so to herself than her compatriot.

At about the size of an average fox, Ally had unknowingly used her blood demon art to transform and take the appearance of a red fox. A sleek orange and reddish coat with a lighter underbelly and tail-tip, her ears much redder than the rest of her fur. Her eyes still the same coloring, a black sclera with amber iris and black pupils. Disregarding the eyes, she now looked like an average fox.

"S-so ummmm, does this hurt or help our chances of blending in? I think I could try and change back..." Ally spoke hesitantly, she was unsure of everything she did, fear of making things worse for Yume. It was clear her presence was some sort of trouble for the Slayer, beside the obvious, Ally guess it was conflict of belief. She could remember her former Master's teachings, about Demons being too dangerous to let live, and killing them was a mercy. Perhaps.... she began to think about the alternative, when she recalled the presence of the Demon that turned her. That feeling made her ice cold, her ears fell back and eyes darken, her tail wrapping around her front paws. Fear starting to take hold once again. She prayed to never have to meet that Demon again. Ever.
