It was a warm, yet breezy Summer day in Shiyoda, Japan. Spring had just ended and the warm summer air was refreshing to anyone who breathed it in. The large house that the Higurashi's called home stood taller than any of the ones around them, most of which housed small families that they’d speak to on occasion, but not frequently enough that they’d consider them friends or even acquaintances.

The neighborhood was small and cozy, one with nosey neighbors and gossiping housewives, but the Higurashi kids had ended up there after their father decided to be done with them. Cherry Blossoms grew on trees outside of the large mansion and the breeze blew a few petals around causing a beautiful scene in front of the old building. The house was far too large for them to clean it all in one go, and it was still tidy, just a bit dusty from all of the empty space they had.

Ever since they had gotten new roommates in the form of animal spirits though, the mansion had become a bit more lively. For some, it was a revelation, something they desperately needed to feel alive again. For others, it was an annoyance and they just wanted one second of peace and quiet. Whatever the inhabitants feelings were, one thing was for certain; the summer was only just beginning and things were only going to get crazier from here.

As tired as she was, Towa couldn’t ignore her alarm on her phone any longer. She’d already hit snooze multiple times and just because it was officially summer break didn’t mean she could just slack off for the next two and a half months. No. She would be even better than she was now, that was a promise she made to herself. Mind you, it was a promise made before this whole ‘curse’ thing came to fruition, but nevertheless, it was a promise that she planned to keep.

Her phone read late 11am, which is not how she wanted to start off her day, “Damnit…” The girl groaned, rolling over to push herself out of her bed. She could already hear conversation downstairs in the kitchen, which meant that some of her recent housemates were already up and moving. She definitely preferred to be the first one awake, so she could go straight to rehearsing without having to deal with too much morning commotion, but after last night’s late session with her private teacher, Towa was far too exhausted for her usual early morning routine.

Prior to all of the extra bodies in the house, Towa would’ve just wrapped a robe around herself and gone downstairs, however with all of the extra testosterone floating about, she didn’t find herself as comfortable in simple shorts and a t-shirt. Instead, she got dressed for the day, taking a moment to smooth through her dark hair with a brush before going to her and her sister's shared bathroom to brush her teeth and other morning toiletries.

Once ready, the girl headed down the steps, peeking her head into the kitchen with a small and curious smile, “Morning.” She said softly, not wanting to be rude, but also not particularly wanting to intrude on their conversation. The girl slithered through them, going to the pantry for a granola bar and a water bottle before slithering out just as quickly as she came. She'd make herself coffee later, when the kitchen was a little calmer. It was nothing against those guys, she was just barely awake which meant all of her anxious thoughts from when she was asleep were rushing in to greet her for the new day. She couldn't deal with those on top of trying to talk to people this early....

With a deep exhale, she tore open her small breakfast, tossing the wrapper before going to the main hall where her mother’s grand piano stood, beckoning her to the bench.

Akihito Tsuki
The Snake
Last night had only resulted in moving a couple strings on his board. The only thing he could say for sure was that they were all in the same hospital. His theory on why they turned into animals varied between medical experimentation and mystical curse, and everything in between. Checking his clock, he sighed as he realized another sleepless night had passed, and if he wasn't careful he'd transform. Again. His whiteboard of reasons he transforms was "Girl Hugs?" and "Sick" and "Cold?".

His borrowed room was a mess of papers, research, and cups. Strangely, he kept his clothing organized neatly, but that was pretty much the only neat section of the room.

Now was time for coffee, eggs, bacon, whatever the kitchen had. His quick jog to the kitchen reavled that no. It was much closer to lunch than breakfast and his watch had stopped. Again.

Not really up for much chit chat, Aki grabbed a plate and some food, before retreating elsewhere. The others were... fine. He was just tired and looked like a mess. He'd say it was too early for interaction, but it was 11am. Hardly early.

Hearing someone in the main hall, he decided to take his plate there to try and listen in. The chance it was Towa was high, and he liked when she played. He just didn't want to make it obvious and scare her off it. So he picked a dark corner to sit, and waited. She hadn't sat down yet, but now it was inevitable. So he sat and waited for her to do so, trying to not make himself too much of a presence while enjoying his breakfast, which was most certainly cold now.

Izumi Hayato
The Cat
On days like these, Izumi loved to stay in bed for longer period of time. He didn't need to go to work today and his class was only starting around 3 p.m. He used this opportunity to enjoy his well deserved rest after working for 4 days straight.

Hearing some sounds from downstairs, he opened his eyes and tried to ignore it. This was his only free day from work and he wanted to make the most of it by sleeping for the majority of the day. ''Tsk, there are people trying to sleep here'' he mumbled as he turned to his other side and closed his eyes again. He didn't mind the company of the other Zodiac member, but when he was sleepy like this, he couldn't care less about what was happening around him.

His room was tidy and he made sure it was clean. Izumi could be a lazy person from time to time, but he always made sure he did his own chores.

''Just a few more minutes. I gotta catch up on some sleep first'' he mumbled as he tried to fall asleep again.

Kinu’s pulsing headache finally pulled her awareness from her studying and back to the world around her. The desk she’d been given (as it definitely didn’t feel like hers without the fading Lisa Frank stickers her little sister had covered the one back home in. She’d insisted the colorful animals were to watch over her, as she’d done them. The irony seemed extra stark here.) was covered in a variety of veterinarian textbooks, she’d borrowed from a friend. Not that she was getting far in them. Her time as an animal was fuzzy (god, she needed more sleep if she was thinking in puns.) And she wasn’t even sure if she was a sheep or a goat, let alone what to do if any of the others got injured. Mammals at least had similar circulatory systems, and birds weren’t far off. But one of them claimed to turn into a seahorse? Could they even breathe out of the water? Kinu had so many questions, and far too few of answers.

Capping her pen, she blew softly on her notes for them to dry. A glance at her phone made her scowl. Being here had ruined her schedule already, and she somehow had missed most of the morning. Shooting off a text of love mixed with worry to both of her siblings, she stood up deciding to dress for the day. Deciding on a simple top and slacks, she dressed quickly, she was downstairs quickly. Walking into the kitchen, Kinu looked around the room, feeling like an intruder. She didn’t know these people. They likely didn’t want to be here any more than she did. But she could still be friendly. “Good morning.” She spoke in a soft voice, not wanting to disturb. She wanted to ramble on, something like I hope you’ve had a good morning or comment on how little there was left of the morning, but instead she just pushed her bangs back behind her ears and forced a smile.

Tano Hideo - The Ox

Tano was the first resident awake in the Higurashi household, or at least the first one to head down to the kitchens. He wasn’t one to stay in his room, not when there was work to be done, he needed to earn his keep after all. Since no one was yet preparing breakfast, that was the first task on his list to do. He turned on the coffee pot and started cracking eggs. Bread was just popping out of the toaster when more people started showing up.

With his limited eyesight, Tano did not see who was grabbing food as he made it, he only heard mumbled thanks or quiet footsteps behind him. Paired with his focus on not burning the eggs or bacon, he was ill prepared for mischief behind him.

Shou Oshiro - The Rat

Shou woke with the dawn, not wanting to miss a moment of daylight, and crept to a nearby balcony close to his room. He liked to sit out there whenever he could, it was the perfect spot for seeing the sunrise, getting fresh air, and snooping on people outside of the house. The most of his morning was spent gazing at the sun, imagining himself elsewhere, anywhere but here.

The Higurashi home was not a terrible place to live at all, in fact it was most pleasant. Shou was very grateful to be allowed to stay while this…situation… is resolved. However, there are so many places he needed, wanted, to see. It often felt as though his life was a series of hopping from cage to cage to cage.

Shou snapped one final picture of the sun with his camera before taking his leave from the balcony and heading downstairs. The smell of eggs and bacon made Shou’s stomach growl angrily. He peeked inside the kitchen and saw Tano working briskly at the stove. Tano was a big guy, way taller than Shou and the other residents here. It looked a little silly, seeing a big guy working with a little skillet and spatula. Shou grinned and silently stepped towards him.

Suddenly, Shou pounced on his friend, grabbing hold of his neck and hanging on saying, “Hey, big guy!”

The spatula flew in the air as Tano stumbled backwards, trying to keep his balance with the new added wait. The spatula fell down and miraculously landed right back in Tano’s hands. He breathed a sigh of relief and went back to cooking, not at all phased by the rat boy on his back.

“Get off,” Tano said monotonously, and Shou did so, dropping lightly to the ground.

“Thanks for making all of this, I’m starving!” Shou started filling up his plate and sat at the table, watching Tano go. After that, a few more people came in and out of the kitchen, grabbing food and going. Towa went to play piano, one of Shou’s favorite parts of the morning although he knew better than to say that out loud. He had observed that she didn’t really enjoy people watching her practice, but he listened every morning anyway, whether she knew it or not.
Kinu came in soon after, another one that was standoffish. Shou smiled brightly at her, maybe he can get someone to actually stay in the kitchen with him. “Good morning, Kinu. Are you hungry? Tano made a feast fit for a thousand men. Come grab a plate and sit with me. You can hear Miss Higurashi practice from here.

Kinu blinked, surprised to see someone who looked happy to see her. God, she missed her kid sibs. Her smile came more naturally as she approached the two. “Okay…Shou,” She was pretty sure he was the rat, and her mind worried over the delicate size he’d become. “Thank you for this Tano, it’s exactly what I need this morning. Maybe I can do the same tomorrow? Or we can cook dinner together?” She wasn't the kind to have idle time, and she refused to just lounge around the manor taking up space.

It was hard to imagine that these boys were once her best friends. She could barely remember those carefree days, over half her life ago. And now we’re here. Taking a plate, she made her way over to where Shou sat, pleased she didn’t have to cook for herself. She’d already wasted most of the morning. “Do you guys have any plans for the day?
