salem b*tch trials
a witch roleplay
  • Casting
First and foremost, before I explain how exactly the casting for this writing experience will go, I would like to say that this roleplay is looking for all sorts of different characters of all different ages, genders, etcetera. Hence, do not be afraid to apply even if the characters you had in mind do not fit the main cast—the main cast isn’t the entire story’s focus.

For the main cast, there are 5 spots waiting to be filled by unique and 3-dimensional characters which fit the following description:

Witch (of age 16-27), part of the Coven of Salem.

For the side cast, there is an unlimited amount of spots waiting to be filled by unique and 3-dimensional characters which fit the following descriptions:

Witch (of age less than 16 or more than 27), part of Coven of Salem,

Undiscovered witch/warlock (of any age), not part of Coven of Salem,

Human/Supernatural creature (of age 16+), living in or around the town of Salem, MA.

#coven leader

General
Full Name: Elena Camila Alviar
Nicknames: Lena, Miss Alviar
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual/Asexual
Career/Occupation: Coven leader/unemployed
Cast: Side

Appearance
Face Claim: Simone Kessel
Appearance Description: Elena Alviar stands at 5’8” with her shoulders raised high and confident. Her long black hair falls all the way to her hips and dances in the air as she walks. Her dark brown eyes compliment her toned complexion very well, and her eyebrows are always thinned out and perfectly plucked. While she does have a few wrinkles on her face, she wears them with confidence and pride—she often says that her wrinkles are a sign of wisdom, and that she can’t wait to get even more.
Physically, she is a fairly thin person, and her skin seems to always be clear and shiny, especially in the sunlight. She does not wear a lot of makeup, just a touch here and there, and usually happens to be wearing a lot of jewelry like bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc.
Her clothing is usually flowy and well-fitting on her body. She makes sure that she looks presentable, but if you had to guess one person in Salem to be a witch, most people’s guess would be her because of the way she dresses.
Her face is almost always sporting a smile, even in tough situations. Her sentences are always decisive, strong, but skillfully said, and her laugh is something you wish you could hear more often.
When Elena walks into a room, she brings in an aura that radiates. You want to observe her, and your eyes just keep running to her even if you don’t want them to. There is a slight intimidating factor that people see when she walks into the room, but nobody really knows what this factor is, just that it clearly exists.

Personality
Personality description: Your first conversation with Elena will leave you feeling one of two ways: encouraged and inspired, or confused and a bit terrified—it depends on what reason you talked to her in the first place.
Elena is an honest and empathic being who prefers the truth over anything else, and her lie-radar is very good—if she catches you in a lie, it is something that can hurt your relationship with her deeply, and it will show. She, however, is very open-minded and one does not have a need to lie to her because she will accept most things.
She is a very good talker, but she is an even better listener. She loves when people tell her things, and she enjoys giving advice and helping people reach their full potential. She is a generous person who doesn’t expect much in return, just that you try and listen to her advice if she gives you any.
In very tense situations, her aura shifts, and there is a nervousness around her that feels pungent. She can become bad-tempered and easily-annoyed. When this happens, she usually pulls away from everyone and requests some time to be left along with her feelings.
All in all, Elena is a natural-born leader who deserves the place in the coven that she has. She is powerful and she knows it. She never underestimates anyone, and she makes sure that people do not underestimate her either.
Skills: Leadership, Patience, Positivity, Storytelling, Teaching, Coaching, Negotiating, Open-mindedness, Mediating, Inspiring.
Likes: Nature, Fire, Success, Truthfulness, Yellow butterflies, Old books, Old inspirational poems, Folklore sayings, Jewelry, Jazz music, Tea, Helping, Performing magic, Being admired, Being pampered, Cooking, Public speaking.
Dislikes: Liars, Extreme cold, Movies, Modern architecture, Rejection, Criticism, Judgement, Greed, Snobs, Whining, Being ignored, Arrogance, Bigots, Warlocks, Politics, Losing, Snarky comments.
Fears: Losing her coven, Costing her coven something, Being to blame for something horrible, Someone outsmarting her, Someone replacing her.
Dreams: Helping as many witches reach their fullest potential as possible, all the while making her coven strong. The Coven of Salem reaching the power it used to have in the glory days.

History
Childhood: Elena Camilla Alviar wasn’t born into a good family. In fact, it could be said that she was one of the frequent people who happened to absolutely lose on the family lottery. Her father was on his breaking point just around the time she took her first breaths, and it wasn’t long before he was gone with the wind, escaping from the life he had created for himself and his wife.
Elena’s mother, however, would never leave Elena and her older brother, but that didn’t mean that she earned the best mother award. In fact, at times, Elena thought about what life would’ve been like if her father was the one who stayed, and her mother the one who left. Perhaps an absent father would’ve been better than the control-freak, unsatisfied, and overworked mother that she had been stuck with.
It was the sad reality that Elena and her brother often went to sleep with their mother yelling at them. These are the only memories Elena has true and vivid recollections of, which truly is sad.
In school, Elena was average at best—her brother was much better than her—and she didn’t ever feel a need to succeed as much as he did. She was more focused on making friends and being part of people’s lives. This was around the time her powers first started manifesting, actually. It wasn’t exactly a coincidence that she was the only one who could convince the teacher to cancel a test at the last minute, or the only one who could convince the shy kid to give her all of his snacks.
This was life for Elena all the way until the glorious age of 15 when her older brother decided to join a group of guys who would go around the neighborhood and collect debts for an infamous dealer. It really wasn’t long before trouble came and her brother realized that the dealer wasn’t as stupid as he thought. A few money tricks later and the man was pretty much screwed.
Instead of facing whatever was coming, like his father, he decided to run away, and his mother and sister were left to deal with the dealer. In the classic dealer fashion, it was the night after her brother disappeared, that 4 men broke into the family house and ransacked the place for any valuables. When they didn’t find what they were looking for, it appeared that the two women were now in physical danger.
A strong will and the first time using her power consciously, the four men ended up dead, shooting each other, leaving the two women unharmed. And that was the first time her mother had ever called her a witch. The first and the last time, because after that, Elena was out of the house.
Adulthood: Living on the streets, Elena grew up really quickly, and she considered having her mother calling her a witch a blessing in disguise, because even though she didn’t have a roof over her head, she now understood that she was special and could use that special part of herself to get whatever she wanted.
Truthfully, she was aware that she might have been pushing it at times with her requests, and that she let her resentment towards others make her extra cruel towards them. What she wasn’t aware of had been the fact that using her magic meant that other supernatural creatures (those who could detect magic) could easily locate her.
Luckily for her, the first people who happened to locate her were three women from the Coven of Salem. They could see she needed help, and they decided to explain to her what she was and how her life could be wonderful if she decided to work and use her powers for good. It took a bit of convincing, but at the end, Elena decided to go with the three women to Massachusetts.
The leader of the Coven of Salem back then was Zahara, an elderly witch who had, immediately upon seeing her, decided to take Elena under her wing and teach her the way of a true witch. Zahara is the biggest reason why Elena is the way that she is, and how she became who she became.
Since this, Elena had lived her life in Salem, growing her powers and learning to master her abilities. Soon, she started growing in popularity in the coven itself, and when Zahara died, she appointed Elena to be the next leader of the coven.
Current Life: Currently, Elena works as the leader of Coven of Salem. She lives in the good side of Salem, the one with the fancy houses and backyard pools. Sure, she is technically unemployed, and she did technically use her powers to accumulate her wealth, however, this isn’t new to the witches of Salem, and is a practice used often. She has the powers, why wouldn’t she use them and make life easier on herself?
She spends most of her time helping the witches of the coven use their powers for the good of the coven and helping witches learn how to control and master their abilities just like Zahara helped her. She also takes care of the magic source of the coven which often steals a larger part of her day.

Powers (witches/warlocks/supernatural creatures only)
General Power: Mind Witch
Abilities:
  • Suggestivity – If Elena happens to say something that suggests something (like an advice), a person is much more likely to listen to it without actually thinking about why they’re listening. This happens with anything she says and she can’t control this.
  • Manipulation – If Elena focuses her words and connects to a person’s mind, she can make them do whatever she wishes and they will have to listen to her. She has to focus to do this, but since she has mastered this ability, she doesn’t have trouble doing it when necessary.
  • Memory manipulation – If Elena wants someone to remember an event differently, or to forget an event completely, she can make them remember or forget. This is the hardest one of her abilities to do, and she has a hard time doing this with events in the long term memory, however, not events in the short term memory.

Nadine K. Duggan

#BoneWitch

#Scrying

♡coded by uxie♡

Full Name: Nadine Katherine Duggan
Nicknames: Nade, Na-Witch,
Age: 23
Gender: Female, she/her
Sexuality: Bisexual
Career/Occupation: Tattoo Artist (part-time scryer; more so in relation to grief counselling)
Cast: Main

Appearance: Nadine’s visage is between two halves: the punk rocker she moulded and the good witch her family created. She’s erring more on the side with spiked bracelets and shoddy dyed hair; rebellion in bleach-dyed tips and curly bangs. The good witch is an exemplified daughter who straightens her shoulders and internalizes her lessons. But just like an electric guitar; she’s humming and reverberating energy. A wild smirk here and a peppery teasing smile there. Her mould is more of her own in recent years and she’s walking within the rawness of her own power; transparent to its whims and caught with it.

Personality: Comparable to an excited pulse, Nadine’s adventurous spirit and unbecoming lady-like manners make her own sort. She’s through and through about what she’s all about — a dented tin with the label worn through. But she appreciates her edges and the bluntness which is borne from them. There comes a time when she needs to be more sympathetic, but her “charge and see later” attitude makes her an odd choice for scrying. But Nadine flutters in her usual way. Just floating in the endless space of sensations and she can describe them in such wicked detail; she’s an artist of the body and wouldn’t be any other way.

Skills: baking, drawing, sketching, shading and digital art mediums.

Witchly skills: Developed information on human anatomy burial rituals; rites and how to successfully prevent a ‘ghost’ from rising (though this can vary); how to make lucky bone charms (with some minor effects)

Likes: Drawing, colour composition, digital art, peaceful evenings, delving into the human mind and body. Body positivity, inclusion, peppermint tea, and spicy food. Nadine loves comfort food (such as pizza and takeout), more so when she can have a Chinese dish.

Dislikes: Excessive gore, sexist jokes, her occupation being demeaned or judged for it. Judgemental looks, conversations and people speaking over her — Nadine knows her own mind. The colour orange (in both tattoos and as a colour), anything too fishy; mornings with no coffee and tea with no flavour.

Fears: Buried alive (she knows how much emotion can be attached to bones), if her sense of self will separate or she’ll be buried deep into the earth with no escape.

Dreams: Owning her own tattoo shop (with plenty of bone decor)

General Power: Scapulimancy
Abilities: Divination; empathy and minor bone control are all offered to Nadine and her speciality. Divination allows Nadine to foresee events before death & significant memories which have lingered (both traumatic and happy). Unfortunately, her divination can be scrupulous and perceptions can be tainted by personal bias. But her other gifts can be a little broader in the sense — empathy. Touching someone’s arm can give Nadine the means to detect emotions via the bones and sense them. She can, of course, control her own bones (by snapping broken bones together), but she cannot repair the skin or mend the wound itself; merely the bones in her body.

> Nadine’s connection to bone also comes under a sensory application sensing where bones have been buried and where to find them. She can manipulate the marrow slightly, such as condensing it into dust clouds or manipulating the structure (dead bones only). She cannot manipulate a person’s bones, witch or warlocks; the tissue, she’s theorized acts as a barrier in protection.

How: BONES. Without a bone— she’s a dog without a bone, but rather literally in that definition. The very source that Nadine gravitates towards is the bones themselves and psychosensory to become that bridge.

History:

Nadine was born into a powerful family, renowned for witchcraft, elemental influence, and ties to nature. Her mother was a particularly wonderful witch who practised peaceful mediums and meditations. Her father was a practitioner in the occult divinity (tarot readings, ghosts), etc. But Nadine’s affinity arose as something unexpected and undivined (a joke she makes), with power so scarce in her family tree — she somehow won the bone-y lottery. Growing up in a family of five daughters, she was often neglected emotionally and physically, the shadow to the corner; the piece of furniture that sometimes made its way into photos. Other times, her family’s fixation on her magic (the only worth she possessed), became a source of contention among them. The first ten years of her life, her affinity for magical capability— the youngest in her family, “she got the magical scraps,” and maybe she’d be an elemental witch with a minor elemental power. It changed on her 11th birthday, coinciding with her grandmother passing, but Nadine knew some things she shouldn’t. Upon paying her respects, a brush of fingers to a bony wrist — the world opened up to her. Her grandmother’s fondest memories (the favourite child), and other terrible secrets; an affair she never reconciled in her living life and Nadine stirred up chaos at the funeral.

She didn’t know, of course, but there was this primal connection, a primordial force asking for her. It didn’t reject her and a rare magic was discovered; much to the dismay of her mother and the excitement of her father. Yet her family never recovered from the funeral—- whispers clung to Nadine’s back and secrets wouldn’t be buried with the dead. A social pariah with a family who’s scrying connected to something more ancient than themselves. Nadine’s father, Ian Duggan, encouraged her gifts and was the only one to understand such an immense and vast relationship. She became moulded under his tutelage.

To be his successor; while her mother scorned her attempts to expand her scrying.

Nadine’s relationship with her sisters was perhaps the most healthy in the household: competition, rivalry, pettiness and envy had their hand in prominence. But she was the second youngest, the sisters were protective and joined at the hip to help Nadine. The funeral changed little in the dynamic, but when Nadine hit her 18th birthday. Something changed fundamentally when her father favoured her much more. Attention, lessons, ancient artefacts and spell books were handed to her.

Nadine only wanted to draw; an artisan of body and art; combining her gifts into meaningful expressions (things she couldn’t admit). Her father’s obsession with wanting a legacy drove a wedge with her mother, Marie Duggan. She was much more pliant in the gentler arts and wanted her daughters to resemble that. But Nadine would never be able to access what they did and a division in the household flittered. Eventually, both her sisters and mother skipped town— leaving Nadine at her father’s shop. Nadine rebelled at age twenty; staining her skin with inky splodges and ridges. Undefined shapes at the grimiest tattoo parlours she visited under the night sky and cut her hair. Her father, Ian, did his best to guide her back to heel and wanted to reshape her, but Nadine’s soul couldn’t be confined in his achy palms. She started working on her own progression in life, but Ian still insists on her involvement with the coven. There seems to be an unspoken agreement her gifts would be best served at the coven.

Thus, making her more experienced than other members and more aware of her limitations.

Nadine is now 23; working part-time at the local studio and innovating a new service (adjacent to her own gifts), at the coven, such as helping families transition into the grieving process. She could remark on the happiest memories for belated witches and warlocks; something which garnered her some respect. Nadine’s relationship with her mother slowly improved in the span of two years, coming home and helping Nadine with her own business. But the pair are still tense and her mother doesn’t know how to handle her.

    Elizabeth Payne.

    02

    nicknames.

Elizabeth's family are the only ones that refer to her by her full name, but even they each use unique nicknames. Her father affectionately calls her Lizzy, her older sister prefers Liza and her younger sister simply goes around the house shouting 'Bee!' or 'Eli!' when in need of her. On the other hand, Elizabeth's classmates, when not insulting her behind her back, opt for using a shortened version of her name, Eliza. People, mainly strangers who haven't a clue, former friends and boyfriends, have unsuccessfully tried nicknaming her Beth before. Elizabeth refuses, because Beth is an intimate name for her as that is the way her late mother used to call her.

Small face with an angular chin and rounded cheeks that give her head the shape of a teardrop. Her skin is incredibly fair to the point she would seem a corpse if not for her blush and both her eyes and lips are uncharacteristically plump for such a delicate-looking face. She's not particularly dedicated to haircare and the extent of her beauty knowledge starts and ends in make-up items, which is why her long dark brown hair has split ends and her eye bags are taken care of via concealer instead of rejuvenating products.

Elizabeth's physique is slim and bony, though not scrawny as her curves are still defined and prominent. This makes for an interesting combination, because her body could look gangly and unattractive if not for the confident way she carries herself and her mystique doll-like face that captivates people. Going by her 1.61/5'3" and 53 kgs/117 pounds though, it is pretty clear that impressive muscle and physical strength are not her defining traits.

    attire.

When in church and school, Elizabeth selects modest and prudish outfits that make her come off as proper and unassuming in front of church staff, school authorities and parents alike. Once the night falls and she's free to roam around town, the girl adopts a bold wardrobe consisting of revealing dresses, flashy accessories and an assortment of leather jackets to top it off. Outside of any of these environments, like when spending time in her house and around the coven, Elizabeth makes no effort to be impressive and wears the average t-shirt and jean combo.

description
April takes pride in her appearance and always appears neat and well groomed. She favors a business or semi-formal wardrobe, feeling at her best in expensive brands. She typically smells of vanilla and citrus. She carries herself with confidence and holds a brazen stance at all times.

Sarah Snook
Are You Feeling Lucky?
personality
April is an ambitious and intelligent woman. She is a valuable ally and a formidable foe, who makes use of any resources at her disposal to come out on top. Her primary loyalty is to herself, beyond that she doesn't hold too much loyalty to others. A bit distrustful of others, she truly believes that the only person she can count on is herself. She hangs on to past emotions a bit too much, and is able to hold a nasty grudge. Not someone to go making promises, she dodges setting firm loyalties and making firm commitments like a professional. She never technically lies, preferring to bend truths, which is what makes her a strong manipulator (well, that in combination with her powers). She can be a bit impulsive and likes to keep herself busy, hating being idle.
Charismatic, April has an air of confidence that attracts people. She's a woman of success, and people want to be near success. No matter the situation, things tend to go her way. Call it luck, if you will. She lives to impress and enjoys the praise she gets from being perceived as a strong leader. There are many people that like April, but she doesn't allow too many people to get close to her. April likes to act much colder than she actually is. She craves independence and control, which causes her to feel like she needs to be extra assertive. In reality she can be pretty softhearted and kind, she just puts up a lot of walls in order to make herself seem tough.
Although she comes across like she would, she'd never hurt someone innocent to get her way. She craves power for the sake of having power in security, she doesn't have any long term plans for change- good or bad. Despite being a bit distanced from the coven these days, she'd go to great lengths to aid her fellow witches if need be, even if she acts like she wouldn't.

backstory
April never knew her father, a supposed deadbeat who skipped town when he found out that he was to become a father. She was raised by her mother, who was a witch. Rachel McCarthy was a fire witch, born and raised in Salem. Being a bit younger (about 19) when she had her daughter, Rachel relied on the support of the coven. So, April was aware of the coven from a very young age. Raised by witches, she knew all about magic. However, earlier on, she didn't show any signs of having abilities herself. She grew up in a very loving environment, but she always felt slightly less than- appearing as just normal person in a group with insane special abilities. A part of her grew to dislike the coven. Other younger witches that the coven had taken in to train greatly outshined her. April just didn't feel special, which she absolutely hated.
At around the age of 15 her powers started coming in fruition. She was an extremely lucky kid, and found that things tended to go her way. When she focused on really wanting the odds to turn in her favor, she found herself succeeding. The discovery of her abilities boosted her status within the coven. She was no longer just the kid attached to her mother, a great witch. Now, she got to be trained to impress others in the coven with her powers. Despite a fleeting sense of belonging within the coven, the time she spent among other witches as an unremarkable apparent non-witch had affected her more than she cared to admit. She resented the coven for that time in her early life. She knew she liked feeling special, and with her powers she could chase that feeling forever. She embraced the coven for training, but in a social sense she felt disconnected from the group. Never truly bonding with anyone besides her mother, feeling as though her future lay outside of the coven. To her, living her whole life within the coven seemed like it would be stagnant. Never really going anywhere herself, ultimately ending up training other witches. Even from a younger age, she wanted more for herself, and didn't think about future generations as much as some others within the coven- these feelings have lasted her entire life.
In high school she discovered a sense of power she enjoyed with being in a position of power. She used her power to get involved with school government and she easily became class president. That feeling of being someone people looked up to was something she'd never felt before, and she wanted more. Using her luck, she come out on top her whole high school career. Academics, politics, you name it she was succeeding. Things went so well for her, she briefly forgot about others in her life.
Her mother ended up being not so lucky. One day, towards the end of April's senior year, there was a gas leak in her and her mother's home and Rachel McCarty was pronounced deceased. April had some support from the coven, those who were close with her mother, but felt so alone. She made the decision to leave Salem, just get away from her past for a while. She moved to California to attend Stanford, where she studied political science. In terms of money, she inherited some money from her mother and rented the house she'd inherited, and whenever she found herself needing money she went gambling- where she always ended up winning. A few years later she ended up in Massachusetts again, inhabiting Cambridge, to attend Harvard to get her masters. After completing a few political internships, she felt drawn to return to her hometown. She moved back into her mother's house, deep down she craved that familiarity and connection to a place. As much as she resisted connection, her roots were in Salem. She stayed distanced from the coven though. She was still technically a part of the coven, they were aware of the existence and her past with the group kept her affiliated, but interacted with the group as an entity as little as possible, wanting to remain independent and not get tied down with the organization. April soon became invested in the human politics of the town. She held a seat on the city council for a few years, then about a year ago ran for Mayor. She won the position and has been serving as the Mayor of Salem for a year. Despite not interacting much with the coven members, she uses her position of power to aid with the anonymity and ease of life for the supernatural in the area, which keeps her involved to a certain extent.
powers
General Power: Luck manipulation
Abilities:
Luck Augmentation: April is able to increase the luck of both herself and others. The use of this ability on herself is very easy and has become second nature to her. To employ this onto others takes some concentration. This is easy and requires minimal concentration if the target is within a close range and is on the receiving end of this magic for a short amount of time, but can become a more difficult task if April aims to bestow her magic upon someone for an extended period of time away from her proximity.
Luck Erasure: April can reduce the luck of others (and theoretically herself, but she's never wanted to try that). Similarly to luck augmentation, this ability requites concentration and effort. It is easier for short amounts of time in close range, but becomes much harder for an extended period of time when her victim would be further away from her.
Luck Field: April is able to create a field in which luck is generally increased or decreased for anyone within the area. The time this field can be up is limited and it takes a bit of effort to make. She has more experience creating fields of good luck, therefore those are easier to create and last a bit longer than fields of bad luck.

Full Name: Roxanne Daniela Harrington
Nicknames: Roxy, Rox
Age: 19 years old
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: Clerk at an antique shop, works part-time as a waitress
Cast: Side (?)

appearance.

Faceclaim: Odessa A’zion

Appearance: Roxanne stands at 5’8” and possesses an agile, lithe build from running around and roller skating. Her arms are strong from climbing trees, drumming sessions and hauling and organising heavy antiques to meet the capricious demands from the shop owner who she works for. A head full of thick, unruly curls in a shade that appears chestnut brown in the gloomy spaces where Roxy can usually be found but caramel brown in direct sunlight. Her eyes are a dull greyish blue in hue, typically highlighted by smudged mascara and brown eyeliner. Full lips, a rounded button nose and a scattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks. Has a beauty mark on her left cheek and a small scar on her chin from a roller skating incident in her preteen years.

Her clothing choices include band tee shirts, jeans that are a varying level of ripped and scuffed, flannel shirts, button-ups with floral patterns, worn-out sneakers. Roxy has double earrings in each earlobe and one tattoo: a black-and-white tattoo of a sunflower on her right tricep. Her ears are typically adorned with shiny metal earrings, her wrists and neck are covered in layered necklaces, while her rings feature various rings (she does take her rings off at work for convenience and in order not to tarnish them). The skin of her hands is dry and cracked, her palms calloused from her line of work.

personality.

Personality: It seems like Roxy has stumbled upon a cornucopia containing a lifetime supply of energy and relentless, almost unnerving optimism. There is a certain hint of adolescent naivety to her self-possessed stance in spite of everything in her life seeming to be on the brink of collapse at any given moment. Roxy is the type of person who seems to attract misfortune with each step, be it a flat tire, spiteful landlords, or spilling coffee on a patron’s lap.

With a materialistic streak, Roxy is not unlike a magpie obsessed with hoarding small trinkets and has been compared to a dragon guarding its treasure. This becomes immediately apparent to anyone entering her apartment or opening the glove compartment of her beat-up car where organised chaos rules as a god. Touching or, god forbid, damaging an item from her collection of various trinkets is guaranteed to lead to a wrestling match. However, Roxy is remarkably generous with her time and energy, particularly when it comes to her closest people. Homemade treats, small gifts of things that remind her of a specific person, picking up drunk friends in the middle of the night, she is always willing to lend a helping hand. That is, unless she has gotten lost in her own personal mayhem or suddenly been distracted by a new idea.

Skills: Roller skating, baking, drumming, optimism, storytelling, appraising valuable metals and jewels,
Likes: Shiny objects, jewellery, old books, solid wood furniture, black tea, brownies, cheesecake
Dislikes: Moths, her landlord, cigarette smell, disposable plastic, meat, loan sharks, religious organisations
Fears: Aeroplanes, small and enclosed spaces, pregnancy and childbirth
Dreams: Being financially comfortable, opening up her own antique store

history.

Talia Harrington had just turned nineteen when she returned home after her gap year with a noticeable baby bump. The criticism that Talia’s parents subjected her to was rather mild, and the last traces of their disappointment vanished when little Roxy was born. Thankfully, Roxy’s grandparents owned an antique shop with a spacious apartment above it, so there was enough space for the four Harringtons. Roxanne grew up surrounded by dusty, leather-bound volumes, pendulum clocks and intricate vases that a more cautious child would not dare even breathe near for fear of the previous owner’s indignant ghost lurking in the corner, if the stories from her grandfather, usually told in grave, hushed tones but with a playful gleam in his eyes, were to be believed.

Unfortunately, Roxy’s grandmother died when she was seven, and not too soon after her grandfather’s health gradually started to deteriorate. At that point, Talia had freshly obtained her degree in art history, though the caretaker duties that her father now required quickly swept away all aspirations of moving away from her hometown to a bigger city to pursue a career as an art curator.

While the family business had been barely staying afloat even before Roxy was born, mostly sponsored by her grandfather’s wealthy lifetime friends, it was when Roxy’s mother had to take over the finances of the shop that she discovered just how much the Harringtons were in over their head. With dwindling customers and drowning in debt, it was inevitable that, when Roxy was about fourteen, the Harrington business was liquidated in order to get out of the ever-increasing interest rates and finance her grandfather’s medical bills and nursing home when her mother was no longer able to take care of her father. And so, Roxy and Talia moved into a small, cosy apartment in the city.

The deep, profound loss of her small-town friendships and the comfort of relics of history surrounding her made the once lively and spunky child turn into a faint shell of her former self. She spent her days conquering the local skate parks alone or combing the beach for seashells.

Eventually, Roxy found her people. In fact, she stumbled upon them by accident. The Kinetic Angels, a garage grunge band that (spoilers) never took off, was looking for a drummer who had the right amount of spunk and pent-up indignance at the unfairness of life. Roxy happened to be in the right place at the right time, and so the remainder of her teen years comprised of long jamming sessions, recreational drugs and nonsensical impromptu DIY projects.

However, teen Roxy also needed money. By the skin of her teeth, she convinced an antique store owner – a seemingly bitter older gentleman who nonetheless reminded her much of her kind-hearted grandfather who by then had passed away – to hire her for the summer before her final year of high school. Gradually she earned the trust of the shop owner, however, when the next summer rolled around and high school had just concluded, a lapse in judgement spoiled Roxy’s immediate future.

Her bandmates had convinced Roxy to let them have an impromptu band photoshoot in the antique shop while the owner was out. The highly valuable 17th-century sword and an equally costly chalice seemed like the perfect props for Roxy to hold, while various necklaces and bracelets adorned her neck and arms. However, as it happened, in the blink of an eye the blade had disintegrated in her arms and molten metal was dripping down her body. While her bandmates lacked the sobriety to fully grasp what had occurred, the fact remained that the sword had mysteriously vanished and Roxy was at fault.

Indebted to a boss who hates her guts, Roxy is spending her gap year after high school working her ass off and figuring out her newly-gained powers which for now seem kind of lame.

powers.

General Power: Metal manipulation
Abilities: Roxy can bend and melt metal to her will, change its visual appearance (give it a shine or a matte finish, change its hue), as well as attract or repel metal objects with her fingertips like a magnet. Currently, her powers extend to small surfaces and medium-sized objects (ones that she can physically hold in her hands), and her movements lack precision. Yet, it is not entirely impossible that with practice her powers could extend to manoeuvring larger metal objects and that one day Roxy might be able to design items such as simple jewellery or blades out of metal scraps.

Yumin has been an animal lover her entire life but, as her parents weren't the biggest fans of amphibians and reptiles, she's only just been able to get them as pets! She has fungus powers, though doesn't know it yet and just thinks her brother's crappy apartment has a mushroom problem.

the friend to animals.

the personality.

Yumin is sweet and bubbly, she completes every task she does with a cheerful demenor, no matter how difficult. She was brought up to be polite and gentle and that is how she continues to behave. She is a lover of animals, she would spend every waking moment with them if she was allowed. She has always said she would work with any animal, but she's especially fond of amphibians and lizards. However, her cheerful demeanor is somewhat surface-level.

Yumin struggles with anxiety, trying her hardest to fit in and avoid upsetting anyone around her. She felt different since birth and found herself changing or hiding parts of herself to make people like her. She always found it easier to spend time around animals, they were nonjudgemental and appreciated her for who she was. There was no forcing eye contact, no trying her best to sit still.

Yumin finds herself unmasking when she's alone,

the virtues.

Polite

Yumin was brought up to be polite, honest and hardworking, especially towards adults or superiors. However, this makes her easier to manipulate, and is prone to overexerting herself for higher-ups.

Passionate

Yumin is incredibly passionate about her interests, especially music. She can often hyper-fixate on her hobbies and can lose track of time if she becomes too focused on a task. However, her passion makes her very driven. She is determined to own her own animal sanctuary in the future.

Reliable

Despite her habit of losing track of time, Yumin is surprisingly reliable. She often arrives to appointments with plenty of time to spare, anxious about being late or wasting someone's time. She is also aware of her poor memory and often writes important things down, so if you've forgotten something vital, she probably has it noted down somewhere.

Caring

Yumin is fiercely loyal to her friends and family and is highly unlikely to leave them behind. She is quite dependent on the people around her and tries to repay them through kind actions.

Party Goer

Yumin loves a party. Though she struggles with sensory issues, she finds parties a great distraction from her home life. She

the vices

Untrusting

Yumin struggles to tell the intent of new people and finds herself paranoid that she is missing a social cue that would be a red flag to most others. This makes her reluctant to trust new people, especially those her siblings have expressed distaste for.

Anxious

Yumin finds change very difficult to adapt to, especially when change is sprung upon her with little warning. Anxiety is something she is medicated for, but she still struggles with certain triggers.

Unforgiving

Yumin is very good at holding a grudge and is selectively forgetful. She can't remember anything she learned in her class yesterday but she remembers what you did 8 years ago that made her mad.

Forgetful

Yumin has a notepad on her person at all times. If she's given a list of tasks she needs to complete, she needs to write them down or she will forget something.

People pleaser

Yumin is desperate for people to like her. She wants to be seen as normal, she always wanted to be like the popular girls in her classes, but she always found herself falling short. Into adulthood, she still finds herself pretending to be something she isn't. She finds it difficult to say no and will often over-exert herself due to the fear of letting people down.

childhood.

TRIGGER WARNING: child abuse, alcoholism
Yumin was the youngest of 4 children and the only daughter in the Song family. Her mother, Hyo, was a workaholic who, even in the final few weeks of her pregnancy, was focused on her high-paying, high-stress job. Her father Hajoon, on the other hand, was a stay-at-home dad and was always the "fun" parent. When their mother was too busy at work, Hajoon was at every concert, sporting event, and parents evening.

When Yumin was born, her mother suffered from severe post-natal depression and, at her worst, believed her daughter to have been replaced by some sort of demon. She felt only confusion and anger when she looked at her newborn baby and the role of parenting Yumin was undertaken solely by Hajoon. Hyo had little to do with Yumin's early life and struggled to bond with her, despite the therapy and in-patient stays she had to try and help.

This put a strain on Hyo and Hajoon's marriage. Hajoon tried everything he could to help, taking over the childcare, supporting his wife in therapy, and trying to reassure her that Yumin was truly her child, but Hyo continued to struggle. It all came to a head when Hyo had a psychotic episode and attempted to take the life of herself and Yumin. Hajoon found himself unable to forgive his wife for hurting their daughter and the two filed for divorce, with Hajoon winning full custody of the children. Hajoon didn't take their separation well. He loved his partner and his children and simply couldn't understand what had gone wrong. He continued to care for his children as best he could, but as Hyo had always been the main breadwinner in the family, he began to struggle financially and his mental health had taken a hit. He turned to alcohol to help him cope.

Yumin had been old enough to remember what her mother had done and began to suffer from vivid nightmares after the traumatic event. Hajoon did his best to help her but, with his own mental health now struggling, he felt helpless. Around this time, Yumin began to really bond with one of her older brothers, Chanhyuk. Yumin and her brothers had always got on well, but she shared a passion for music with Chanhyuk and he became protective over her after their mother left. The two would often explore the surrounding neighbourhood, looking for cool frogs, insects, and mushrooms. Chanhyuk always lamented that he'd find way more mushrooms when he went looking with Yumin.

adulthood.

Although Yumin loved her father, their home held too many difficult memories for her and, as her brothers began to move out and go to university, she began to feel more and more isolated. When Chanhyuk decided to move to Salem after graduating, he invited Yumin, now 18, to stay with him and she eagerly took up the offer. She hadn't done much travelling in her childhood and was excited to experience some more freedom living with her brother. She finally felt safe at home and it showed, she began to stop masking and could express her interests freely. After a few months, she adopted her first frogs, a trio of American Tree Frogs, saving up her small wage from her animal shelter job to buy them a vivarium. She hopes to expand her collection once she's more experienced.

Yumin's doesn't particularly have a plan now she's in Salem, so right now, she just wants to keep working at the shelter and caring for her pets.

magic.

Although Yumin has only lived in two homes, it's still slightly suspicious to her that both have had a mushroom problem. It doesn't matter how many times they pick them from their windowsills and wipe everything down, they seem to sprout again overnight. Yumin has more powers, though she simply hasn't noticed them yet. For example:
Fairy Ring Creation -
Yumin can create fairy rings, a circle of mushrooms which, in folklore, are said to be very dangerous to non-magic users. The danger differs depending on what you read, but it is said that they can curse mortals into dancing until exhaustion, going mad, or they may be taken to the realm of the fairies. Destroying a fairy ring may lead to bad luck. It is unlikely that any of the fairy rings Yumin has accidentally created are powerful enough to do much damage, though they may cause bad luck.
Decay -
Yumin can make organic matter decay. This is something she currently can't control and only tends to happen when she feels intense emotion. So far this has manifested in food in their home going bad.
Connection to the Fay -
As Yumin's fairy circles can send those who step inside to the fairy realm, she is connected to the fay, she just doesn't know it yet.
Connection to Mycelium -
Yumin can feel through mycelium if she's close enough to it, though she has typically put this down to sensory overload in the past as it's something she can't yet control.
Fungal Manipulation -
Yumin can grow mushrooms. As she learns to control her powers, she will be able to choose the species, size and to some degree, shape of the mushrooms. This includes possibly toxic mushrooms.

History
Origins
In the 1600s, a witch by the name of Edith Agate made the perilous sail on the Mayflower to a new world, the home they would call Salem Village. Edith traveled alone while the rest of her family remained in England under the will of the Catholic church. Still, she was able to have the courage to break away, even if it meant she would never reunite with them again. This only meant she needed to create a new family. And that she did. When the trials began, panic struck the witch community of Salem, but Edith was clever as a vixen. Having married Thomas Hawthorne, a wealthy apothecarist from Salem Town, she came out of the trials unscathed, while many women—innocent or not—perished.

A millennia after the atrocities took place, Levinia Hawthorne has taken her seat as a councilwoman for the city of Salem. Being a direct descendant of Thomas Hawthorne made her a member of a founding family, and when Edith Agate married into the family, nearly every Hawthorne child born afterward had been born a witch. As time passed, teachings of her Agate ancestors bled deep into the Hawthorne family; they were heavily intertwined with arts blacker than dark, taking a sick interest in the planes beyond that were incomprehensible to man, finding that they were able to commune with demonic elder beings who dwell in the abyss.

Levinia Hawthorne could do anything, so she did the unspeakable.

The Hawthorne heir did not stop at communing with these beings, she wanted to test the esoteric waters. Levinia was able to form some kind of a union with one of these abyssal beings, something that on gazing upon, a regular human would completely be filled with madness.

Childhood
The birth was difficult. When the baby started to be born, Levinia let out a shrill sound that woke all of Salem. It took thirteen hours for the child to come out and to ensure the mother still lived. The screams died down, hair plastered to her moist forehead, as sweat dripped from her nose. Of course, the father was not to be seen, but Levinia knew. She knew he was peering down at them from the far, far realms. A tear threatened to fall from her eye as she gazed down at something that should not be. The elders, the midwives, and every godsdamned witch in the coven--none of them could take the pride she had for the child who she would name Selene. That moment was fleeting, because within the next, Selene was being ripped out of Levinia's arms. The mother herself was made decent and then taken away by the elders. That was the last time Levinia saw Selene, and would ever see her, according to the elders of the coven. Levinia was excommunicated that same night, banished from stepping foot on Salem soil ever again. She had no choice but to leave, but before she did she left the Hawthorne house and fortune to Selene, the one who would be living in Salem.

Selene was separated from her mother in attempts to keep the child away from the Agate teachings. This was a half abyssal child they spoke of, it was either that or kill her, they saw the risk of abandoning her, so one of the elders adopted Selene. Vivian Thomas. The idea in mind was to raise and guide her through life so that nothing catastrophic happened. She might not have even been a witch, they hoped. But, when the day came that her abilities started to manifest, no one was surprised. She was only a girl of five years old who wanted a pony for her birthday, but was given a puppy instead. After throwing a temper tantrum, she settled down. Vivivan only turned her back for a second, and when she looked back, the small little puppy dalmation was now a full galloping white pony.

Early Life
Growing up Selene was... different, even amongst other witches and the paranormal. It was natural for others to steer clear of her, and that was the way it had been sinced she was a younger child. Despite learning of the coven when she turned eight years old, Selene could not escape the curse of lonliness, so she remained mingling with shadows. Never being close with her caretakers, Selene was always off thinking of other worlds, a habit which plagued her since she could imagine. Imagine a different life. The girl didn't care that she had virtually anything a person living on Earth could ask for: riches, a big house with a pool, having people take care of her and care for her at the same time. Still, she yearned to know her father, even more so her mother. Over the years she quickly learned to not ask about them, but the way Vivivan’s face contorted when she did would have curiosity burn within her evermore.

At around sixteen something awoke in Selene. Done with holding her tongue, she wanted to know more. If she wouldn’t tell her about her real family, then she needed to open up about her abilities. With how tight and tense Vivian was when talking about her abilities—deep within her she knew her adoptive mother was hiding many things from her. The only answer she ever received from the woman she was supposed to call ‘mother’ was, “Selene, my dear. I’m sorry but this I cannot tell you.”

Selene started to get angry. “Why?! What could be so terrible that it scares someone like you? I can’t mention it or ask a simple question…” She was sixteen now and felt owed something. Selene wasn’t a child anymore.

“It’s for your own good.” Vivian started to walk away.

The lights began to flicker. “For my own good?” Selene took a deep exhale, her body was set aflame. “You’re going to tell me.” The way her voice cut through the air with those words made Vivian turn around, only to let out a scream, tumbling backwards.

“Yo—Your eyes—uh!” A black band wrapped itself around Vivian, pulling her arms close to her sides and her ankles pressed against one another. “Selene! Let me go this instant!”

“What if I told you I couldn’t?” she inched closer, holding her tone at a steady level, even though she wanted to shout, yell, kick and scream, “what if I told you I didn’t know how?” Lips in a tight frown, she stated at her so called ‘mother.'

“I didn’t even know you could—you could do those things…”

“Yeah? Well neither did I.” Selene spat. Then, she sighed, taking a breath. With a wave of her hand, the bands melted away into nothingness. “Please. Just tell me.”

The Coven
Salem witch trials? More like Salem bitch trials. The coven members…they all tended to stay away from her, they only speak out of politeness, but never continue the conversation. Selene did not entirely understand why. Vivian hadn’t told her own husband—well, on second thought, the guy is just a mortal. He didn’t know half of the things his wife got up to. All he knew was that she was into the “new age stuff” in her youth. They couldn’t have known the reason why her mother got excommunicated, just that she was. Even if she was, what did that have to do with her? It didn’t bother Selene much, though. She had enough money left behind by her mother to do whatever the hell she wanted. She didn’t need witch friends, she didn’t need any friends.

Selene had been a part of the coven since she was eight years old, yet some of the newer witches could outshine her, and that in itself made her burn alive. She hated to admit it, but she was terrible at controlling her powers, unless doing something requiring less effort like feeling someone’s emotions. If she wanted to pull that binding trick, there were possibilities of the person getting suffocated. Things were always going haywire.

Present
In the present, Selene is doing her sophomore year of college, studying astrophysics and philosophy. No longer living with Vivian and Lucas, or in the dorms like she did her first year attending school, a Hawthorne has moved back into the house belonging to their family for generations. Selene is—unwillingly—still a member of the coven, she has nowhere else to go. Over the last couple of years her abilities have gotten slightly easier to control but she still has a long way to go.

Powers
General Power
Chaos Magic; a mystical art darker than black, that allows Selene to tap into the chaotic forces of the universe and the abyss, it is the opposition of order
Abilities
Chaos Energy Manipulation; the control over chaos that manifests as a void-like energy full of stars, which can be shaped and manipulated into things such as bindings. This energy can also be projected into concussive blasts that destroy or disrupt whatever they touch. Selene was made aware of this ability sometime while she was sixteen. It is difficult for her to control, so she doesn't use it often as it is unpredictable.

Mastery ★☆☆☆☆

Transmutation; the ability to temporarily or permanently alter matter from one form to another. The very first time she altered something it was permanent. When she was six years old and wanted a pony instead of a puppy, so the story goes. Supposedly the first ability that awoke within her, this is the second. She can use it relatively well, though there will always be a chance of it going haywire. Such as while she is trying to change something back into what it was or trying to alter for the first time. The change could become non-deliberate or not take place at all.

Mastery ★☆☆☆

Calamity; the ability to create and manipulate natural disasters such as but not limited to earthquakes, floods, violent thunderstorms, hurricanes, and floods. Selene can do none of these things as of now, this is a dormant ability.

Mastery ☆☆☆

Clairsentience; Selene can feel in a way that is disconnected from her physical senses, from distances beyond possible ranges such as the past and future, sense things beyond normal tactile range such as locations far away from her current, and psychically perceive textures and sensations. She is capable of sensing living and spirit presences, as well as emotions. This is the first ability to manifest.

Mastery ★★

kassandra c. tan
chase sui wonders • solar witch • main cast

general

Full Name Kassandra Clove Tan; her Chinese name is Liánxiá (莲霞).
Nicknames She goes near exclusively by Casey. This evolved from a nickname of K.C.
Age 20
Gender Female, using she/her pronouns.
Sexuality Pansexual.
Career/Occupation Retail worker, student, tutor.
Cast Main cast.

appearance

Faceclaim: Chase Sui Wonders.

Appearance: Casey sports a 5'4" height and somewhat petite frame, with light blemishes and freckles are dotted along her light tawny skin. Her eyes are a deep chestnut brown, though with a golden warmth behind them and a rounded almond shape. Alongside her straight nose, and her smaller though full lips, Casey's features are set in a round face, though her cheekbones and jaw remain defined. Deep and dark brown hair reaches about her mid back, with shorter strands to frame her face. Casey oft pulls it into braids, ponytails and buns, hence maintaining the length.

She enjoys accessorising with jewellery, typically wearing dainty necklaces and rings, though is known to have broad tastes. Her style is generally difficult to pin down, due to her enjoyment in dabbling in a touch of everything-or perhaps fear of being tied too closely to something-from long faux fur trim coat to grunge, sheer layering to classic sundress.

personality

Personality: Casey has a laser focus, and her determined nature is almost bullish. However, as it stems from a place of passion, her drive is admirable. She is not one to rush in, being rather logical, unless for the sake of others who she always seems to put before herself. Her lack of responsibility when it comes to her own wellbeing is a common thread in all aspects of her life.

Inevitably, she has built a high level of patience, though her tolerance for blatant disregard, or lack of effort, is non-existent. Whilst mostly able to maintain composure, Casey's temper tends to be explosive, which she is working on but struggles with. This generally extends to her emotions, which are shielded and scattered, usually not being properly processed before being buried - though it's clear she is critical of her own actions.

Though Casey is certainly not a gloomy individual; she tends to be sarcastic but knows how to sport good humour, and will always get involved with the heart and soul of a party. She enjoys helping people, particularly in learning - whether it be gaining a skill, or solidifying their understanding of a topic. She may not be good with expressing her emotions as openly, but it will be clear when someone is important to her, as there next to nothing she won't do for them.

Skills: An effective leader when required with a silver tongue, good teacher, skilled piano player, photography.
Likes: Days spent by the water, horror movies (it's a love-hate), alternative music, anything vanilla scented or flavoured, dancing.
Dislikes: Any witch training, spiders, weak coffee, forgetting sunglasses, long haul flights, not knowing what to say.
Fears: The dark (though, she argues, its more so what can lurk within the dark she's afraid of - or the unknown); not maintaining control (of her powers or otherwise).
Dreams: Owning a home without the contribution of her parents, striving to be a speech pathologist.

history

Casey's mother was born into the Salem coven, without magic. She was quick to move away, and later in life moved to China, where she met Casey's father. The pair grew extremely close and ended up marrying not long after falling pregnant. Once Casey was born to the infatuated parents, it became crystal clear to her mother that Casey represented everything she despised and everything she could never attain.

Their relationship crumbled, and Casey and her mother moved together back to Salem whilst her father remained in China. As he still cared for his daughter, he would send payments that Casey never truly saw. Aged 8 at the time, she only knew Mandarin fluently as her mother had not spoken English with her, making acclimatising to her new home difficult. It also meant she refused to join the coven for two years, out of pure anxiety. For much of her childhood, she was also selectively mute.

Her mother fed contradictory emotions surrounding her powers consistently: be grateful, be humble, flaunt it, never show weakness, lean into your emotions. The words were sharp and countless expectations were placed upon Casey, who grew to resent her status as a witch, especially when her progress remained stunted and her control lacklustre. The coven, of course, nurtured her growth, but it was twisted by her mother's envy and manipulation.

As soon as she turned 18, she contacted her father and moved away from her mother with the help of his money. If she weren't so afraid of her own potential, she'd likely have left the coven and Salem behind. Currently, she is studying to be a speech pathologist whilst working in retail and tutoring.

powers

General Power: Solar Witch; her abilities are derived from various aspects and strengths of the sun.

Abilities:
  • Light ★★★☆☆: Casey can manipulate and generate light. She can use it in basic blasts, or simple everyday uses of an extra light source. She has begun to develop the ability to solidify light, creating constructs and primarily, forcefields. With more expert control, she can render herself or other things invisible to the eye, or create basic illusions which requires constant concentration for upkeep.
  • Heat ☆☆☆☆☆: She can generate significant heat. Eventually, this control and generation of heat evolves to include fire control, though, as Casey isn't even aware of her true status as a Solar Witch, she will not grasp this for a time. Moreover, control over reducing the heat or fire she creates requires further mastery Casey also lacks.
  • Time ☆☆☆☆☆: Casey cannot stop, slow or accelerate time. Her ability merely allows her to shift objects and living things in either forward or backwards. It is easiest in yearly intervals, which at first is all she'll be able to do, and it is only temporary. The thing affected returns to its original state as soon as her concentration is dropped. The further from its current state or the more precise she has to be, the more difficult.

Limitations:
  • Casey, and her powers and general witch abilities, are weaker at night.
  • Proper regulation of her abilities, so that they don’t get wildly out of hand, is where Casey struggles most.

Personality
Personality description:
There's a rare type of boldness within Leigh. A sort of fearlessness arises when you discover that everything you knew becomes transformed into misgivings, rooted in a toxic cradle. Before he awoke to the truth of his power he didn't believe the craft all that much. He thought he wasn't strong enough to do any sort of miracle short of breathing. Now, he knows better. He knows that power can come from the fear of losing things you care about most. There's a dangerous sort of strength that comes from this separation. You can't just stop when you fall and scrape your knee...you have to push on in the memory of what you're trying to preserve. The monsters under your bed are real...but, strangely, he's not afraid. On the contrary, he wants to be as hands-on as possible with the whole 'being a witch' thing. He's in, all in.

There's also secret rage within him that was awakened the night of the crash. Like a small, curious flame was lit within him, slowly burning him from the inside out. It's not completely taking over his personality, but an addition to it. He's fierce but fair. He can get out of control sometimes but with good reason. He's stubborn as hell once he gets an idea in his head, especially if it feels like the right thing to do. He's not self-righteous to the degree of being annoying, but he will go to great lengths to make what's on his heart known.

General
Full Name: Felicity Roslyn Morrow
Nicknames: N/A
Age: 19
Gender: Female (She/her pronouns)
Sexuality: Asexual Aromantic
Career/Occupation: Attending college, planning to become a doctor. As a side job, she works at the local library.
Cast: Main

Appearance
Appearance description:
Felicity is around average height, standing at 5' 4''. She has a thin figure, that could also be described as lean. As the result of a split-second decision when she was sixteen, Felicity's hair is dyed lavender. She loved the color, and now regularly dyes it. Typically, it's pulled back into two braids, with some bangs hanging loose around her face. Without the dye, her hair is a pale blonde. Her eyes are a soft hazel-brown, and are almond-shaped.

For clothing, Felicity tends to favor bright or pastel color pallets. She aims for comfort above all else, but definitely puts care into her appearance and how she looks. Her typical go-to outfit is a T-shirt paired with either denim shorts or a comfortable skirt, and sneakers. Felicity isn't a big fan of makeup, so she only wears it when it's absolutely required of her. Similarly, she doesn't wear jewelry, as it tends to get in her way.

Personality
Personality description:
Felicity is a calm-mannered and thoughtful person, considering her the people around her before acting. She often appears quiet in group settings, often taking up the role of the "wallflower". Despite that, Felicity pays attention to whatever situation she's in and is excellent at understanding the nuance of situations and interactions.

While Felicity rarely directly speaks up, when she does, she is calm and confident in what she's saying. Anything that comes out of her mouth is something she firmly believes, and will defend, even if it's not obvious. This frequently takes people by surprise, as it's a side to Felicity most are unused to seeing. Furthermore, Felicity is a great help in times of crisis. When faced with any sort of emergency situation, Felicity is able to keep a clear head and help everyone around her get organized and resolve the mess.

In individual settings, Felicity is much more talkative and open, especially if it's someone that she trusts. Still, her number-one goal is to make sure other people are happy and comfortable, sometimes to an unreasonable extent. Because of this, she rarely outright argues with anyone, only tries to subtly disagree. Felicity tends to only engage in this behavior with people in a non-professional setting. When working, Felicity can be more firm and harsh, though it's never her first choice to do so.

Skills: Patience, Empathy, Open-Minded-ness, Cooking and/or Baking, Writing
Likes: Reading (fav. genre is murder mysteries), Being near other people / spending time with friends, swimming
Dislikes: Spicy food, makeup, spending too much time alone, not knowing how to help in some way
Fears: Being alone / being abandoned by her friends and/or family, death, uselessness, and she has claustrophobia
Dreams: Becoming an important / famous / well-known doctor, being able to help people world-wide.

History
Character History:
Felicity's mother was a member of the Coven of Salem, so from a young age, Felicity was very immersed within the coven and its traditions. Her mother was kind and caring, and Felicity was very close with her. She wasn't as close with her father, even when she was younger, but she loved him just the same.

Felicity's family lived close to where the coven gathered, and attended many meetings of the coven. As a child, she loved it. To her, everything seemed wonderful and magical. She came to love it even more when her powers came in, at around eight years old. Felicity would always beg her mother to take her, and the place where the coven met soon became her favorite place in the whole world.

It was around that time when she started noticing that her parents weren't getting along as well as they had. Felicity's father had never been overly involved with the magical side of the family, and she was beginning to learn that it made him uncomfortable and afraid. Because Felicity now had magic, this led to many heated conversations (read: arguments) between her parents.

Eventually, it became too much. Felicity's parents divorced, her father moving away and her mother remaining in their home. After much debating, it was decided that Felicity would go back and forth between her parent's houses. It was an uncomfortable arrangement at first, but she slowly adapted to it. Still, her mother's house and their frequent visits to the coven were always Felicity's favorites.

As time went on, Felicity's relationship with her father slowly improved, though her continuing to practice magic was always a sore spot. He was the one who introduced Felicity to the possibilities of "real-world" careers, and got her interested in medicine. Her relationship with her mother remained stable throughout her life, though they did have some minor disagreements, as most mothers and daughters tend to do. As she got older, Felicity also became more involved with the coven.

Close to her sixteenth birthday, Felicity began navigating her sexual and romantic orientation, eventually settling on both asexual and aromantic. At her birthday celebrations (she had one with each parent) for her sixteenth birthday, she came out to both of her parents, who were very accepting. Her father took Felicity out to her favorite dessert place. Felicity's mother let her pick "something special", and Felicity chose to dye her hair, a decision she definitely doesn't regret.

When high school graduate rolled around, Felicity already knew what she was planning on doing afterward. She had applied and gotten accepted to a local college, so she could remain close to both of her parents. Felicity was planning to become a doctor, and already knew what she was planning to major in. She'd also decided to remain close to home so that she could stay involved in the coven, and keep in touch with her friends.

Powers (witches/warlocks/supernatural creatures only)
General Power: Water manipulation
Abilities:
- Manipulation of surrounding water. Felicity is able to manipulate and shape water near her in a variety of ways. The difficulty of this varies depending on what she is doing, but generally, the more water she is trying to move, the harder. Felicity is skilled with this talent, but overusing it tires her.
- Manipulation of water temperature and state. Felicity is able to change the temperature of nearby water, as well as its state. Once she changes the state of water, she can't change it back (unless she turned it into water vapor). Changing temperature is easier than changing state, especially if she is attempting to turn water into ice. This was the first skill Felicity learned, and doesn't find it difficult most times.
- Condensing nearby water vapor. This is the most difficult of Felicity's abilities, one that she hasn't mastered yet. With intense concentration, she is able to condense the water vapor in the surrounding air into liquid, which she can then manipulate.

Erin has a resting bored face. But once she smiles, she does so with her whole face. She's slenderly built, with a small waist and proportional assets. She has a pretty good posture (only slouches occasionally). People often mistake her being in high school still, or even younger, as she's quite baby-faced. She takes proper care of her appearance, though purposely acts and dresses in a way that don't make her stick out from the crowd.
makeup style: natural / no-makeup makeup
hair style: half-up, sometimes curled, buns, braided
style: pretty casual and reasonably modest: oversized tops (hoodies, knitted vests, sweaters, t-shirts), or layers (loose tees or tank-tops with a cardigan or jacket or shirts (generally patterned e.g. flannels, stripes, florals even)), with jeans or sweatpants or shorts, and sneakers. muted colors. minimal accessories: earrings, a simple crystal necklace or bracelet, and a friendship bracelet she wears all the time.
personality
Erin have always been a rather quiet and shy individual. She's content with not sticking out from her peers, preferring to be the man behind the curtain if she could. Since she often stares just a little too long at mirror or any reflective surfaces, and dissociate at times, people might perceive her as a narcissistic weirdo, when in reality that's so far from the truth. She likes to stick to schedules, and is punctual. She was polite, and despite all the spoiling through out her childhood, she's humble still, and not by any means spoiled. She's quite generous with her smile, especially at work (though that's more performative), and around the people close to her. She's friendly, but would be too timid to approach someone first, unless they seem hurt, lonely, or in need of help. She's kindhearted and empathetic. She's a good listener and gives good hugs. She is loyal, would kill or die for you, even help you hide a body, once you become close enough to her. Not that she knows how; but she's smart enough to figure it out.
She's a homebody, and is very introverted, she'd only get out once in a blue moon, and would find excuses to not stay out so late, especially if it's not with anyone she's close to.

powers
General Power: Mirror Magic
She mostly uses mirrors, but she can use other reflective surfaces such as silverware, glass, polished stones, crystals, still water, etc., though they requires more focus, and depends on how still / clear the reflections are (for example water is super hard because it's hard to see your reflection clearly and the surface have to be perfectly still).
She has to have seen / be aware of the mirror/reflective surface on the other end for catoptromancy, communication, and portal/teleportation.
──Mirror Repair
She can repair broken mirrors from the shards, even the little ones, and shape them to form a perfect mirror. She can't do this yet but she will also be able to polish surfaces to make them more reflective. This only works in person, close proximity (i.e. doesn't work through catoptromancy). Depends on the size, doesn't use this ability much.
──Catoptromancy
The power to use reflective surfaces to see people or objects far away from the user. For now she can only do this if there's a reflective surface on the other side as well. Works like seeing through a camera, where the camera is the reflective surface no the other side.
──Mirror Communication
She can use mirrors to, essentially, video-call someone. This stems from her catoptromancy, whereas that is only one way (her seeing others), this is two-ways. For now she can only do this with mirrors on both ends. If the person on the other end breaks the mirror, the communication will end. A very well-practiced ability, uses this all the time with her parents.
──Mirror Portal/Teleportation
She can travel through spaces using mirrors as portals. Only mirrors, at least for now, and the mirrors have to be big enough for her or any other person to fit through. Depending on the distance, this could heavily taxes on her energy. In the same room? No biggie, but why. In the same building? It's like getting punched in the gut maybe, if it's only, say, 5 stories difference. 40 floors would be like getting well beat-up. The greater the distance the more she'd be fatigued, may even take days to weeks to recover. Travelling halfway across the globe might kill her, for all she knows.
──Mirror Storage
She can store objects within mirrors. The object could be seen through a mirror or other reflective surfaces but not in the real world. This works like a mirror dimension, for example she takes an orange from the table and puts it on the table in the mirror, it will exist there (it will eventually rot; she tried with inorganic objects first, eventually curious whether she can just store food there and have it never goes bad. It did, in fact, went bad. Though you can't smell it in the real world, only after she picked it up through the mirror.), though not suspended in time. The object will still be visible to everyone, but only on reflective surfaces, and the space it occupies in the mirror dimension is empty in real life (very useful for storage).
This also works on her-self, where she could just jump inside a mirror, existing on that dimension and not the real world. Though the longest she could stay is 8 hours, before she became super tired. Scared to stay for longer, alas she'd trap herself in there and die. (Which would be immensely horrifying, because she would still be able to be seen, slowly dying, then decaying.)
──Mirror Imprisonment
Branching from the storage thing, she theorizes that she'd be able to trap someone inside a mirror. Has never tried, never really needed to, so she doesn't know if she'd actually be able to do it, nor how much energy it would take. Very scared to try.
For now she can't do it yet, but later on, if she does try, one person would be fine, just constant migraine. The more people, the more it'll tax on her, it would feel constantly like she just finished a marathon.
Her life started twenty-something years ago, where a couple, who were deeply in love with each other, longed for their own little family. A child of their own. Since it was not possible to have one biologically, they searched and searched for a baby they could call theirs, to pour their overwhelming love to, since their own cups are already disgustingly overflowing (they loved each other so very much). Unfortunately, it was not the friendliest of times for a gay couple, even more so for two dudes, to adopt. But eventually, they widen their search, and they found their way to her. Their baby girl, unnamed, born to a woman who wished to remain anonymous some where in Thailand, was then given a name, Erin Liliana Haynes-Bailey, and along with that, a family. She was a merger of her dads' names, an amalgamation of their love for each other.
Erin, or Lili, as she would be called by her dads, grew up well-cared for, spoiled, any thing and every thing she wanted, she would have, showered every day with love and affirmations to her parents who had no shame to show their love for their little family. Granted they've had to move a couple of times, but they've settled in Salem. Perhaps not so coincidentally, her powers started showing a couple years after. Items started mysteriously disappearing, but they seem to still be visible in the reflections. At first her parents thought it would surely just their imagination, even after re-checking more than a couple of times. Finally, they called her dad's sister, Becca, for a third opinion. Rebecca, having lived in Salem for a decade longer, guesstimated that little Erin might be a witch.
A friend of a friend of hers knew one, so they tracked them down, asked for their help. After it was confirmed, they asked them to keep Erin a secret from their coven, Coven of Salem, until she was old enough to decide on her own whether she wanted to join that coven or another one, or even none at all. That aside, the witch agreed to help Erin cultivate her powers, at least for the time being, which eventually lasted longer than was estimated.
Her life other than that proceeded as normal as it could, just a growing girl in a happy family. She met someone who would affect her life forever, her soul sister, in third grade. Like all great friendships, they started as enemies. One a loud, chaotic mess, one just wanted to organize in peace. A fight broke out among them, involving color-pencils. Their parents were called, the issue wasn't really that big of a deal. It resolved easily, and somehow they turned their enmity to them becoming a package deal, attached at their hips, inseparable. Their other friends come and go, but they stayed each other's constant, closest thing to a sisterly bond, always welcome in each other's houses. Erin told Leah of her powers, of her being a witch, and she did nothing but become annoyingly curious. Since then, Leah always kept a mirror on her person, which seemed just like another early teenage girl thing, fortunately.
Erin's life was going great. She's even made up her mind of joining the coven already, at 16, but her parents changed their mind, and told her to wait until she was 18 to do so. Which didn't make much sense to her, because what difference would it make, plus it would just be another burden of turning 18, another large part of her life path she had to decide once she turned that age. But she let it go anyway, thinking waiting for two more years wouldn't have made much difference either way.
Senior prom came and go, then graduation. She knew something was wrong with Leah when she didn't show up an hour earlier. She was tardy, yes, but they made a promise, and promises were sacred to them. Erin made sure of to set multiple alarms the day prior on Leah's phone, giving her plenty of times to get ready, after them deciding to get ready separately. She had a bad feeling, as it was unusual for them to do so, her anxiety still made sense at that point, but still she didn't think of it much at that time. Half an hour before their graduation started, Erin used her powers to 'call' Leah, decided it was more than enough time and she should've been here already, taking pictures with her, as every other graduate are doing. And she had answered, of course, not that she had a choice, her powers would come through anyway, unless the mirror was broken. Erin kept calling every five minutes, and her bestfriend kept reassuring her that she was driving there, to "Just chill out". But when her powers finally didn't come through on the fifth 'call', she knew something was actually wrong, and forced her dad, a police captain, to abuse his power and track Leah down. Her dads tried to calm her, but when she wouldn't back down, they finally obliged, Daniel still trying to calm her down while Tom made the calls. That's when he received words of a car crash, eight minutes from his location, and one of the cars was Leah's. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Erin became a shell of herself. She lost an alarming amount of weight, was barely ever present mentally. She was supposed to take a year to travel and find the thing she'd wanted to do for the rest of her life, her one passion. Not to mention her plan of joining the Coven of Salem. She was experiencing depersonalization/derealization, just on a constant state of dissociating. Her therapy sessions wasn't working either, as she barely respond, and would just burst out in tears at random moments. After a whole year of that, she was highly advised to find something to do, so her dads pushed her to start working, and so she did, at her aunt's salon. At first, it was just mindlessly sweeping, wiping, cleaning. Slowly, she returned, more and more present each day, though she wasn't fully herself yet. But she smiled again, cracked jokes again. She still find herself crying at times, but she would fidget with her bracelet, the other half of it six feet under, and find herself making peace with reality, accepting time waits for no one, and she would've wanted her to kept going. So she pushed through every morning, and it became easier each time.
After a while, she decided hairstyling was for her, following in her aunt's steps, and started to apprentice under her. She also finally joined the coven around a year ago, a few weeks before her 20th birthday.

General

Full Name: Luella Davina Hewitt

Nicknames: Lue

Age: 25

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Career/Occupation: Lawyer

Cast: Side

Appearance

Face Claim: Tiffany Meia

Appearance Description: Luella stands at a solid five feet five inches tall, taller in her four to five inch heels. She sports long black hair that is usually kept in a high ponytail or artfully styled bun. Her skin is a light tan tone free of most blemishes save for a smattering of freckles on her face and shoulders. She's lean with a fair amount of muscle, body kept healthy from weekly visits to the gym. Her eyes are a deep brown that shine amber when the light hits them just right.

Luella is always smartly dressed, whether it's in the office, gym, or completing coven duties. She maintains good hygiene and never sees people without donning the armor of a well dressed and groomed woman. Her wardrobe consists of mostly matching pantsuits and skirt/blazer combos. Her shoes are either nice loafers or four to five inch heels, mostly in black but with other muted colors scattered in. She owns a single pair of red heels. She always wears a single bracelet on her right wrist. A silver bangle with a name stamped on the inside of a thin metal plate. She never takes it off.

When people look at Luella, they usually see a well put together young woman, a proud and dangerous aura defines her.

Personality

Personality description: The outer layers of Luella are a focused, type-a, driven woman. She doesn't have time for your games and won't tolerate them. She's a woman that gets straight to the point and doesn't dally. Her time is money, afterall. Speaking with her isn't rushed, but it does have a heaviness to it. One feels almost pressured to say only the important points and say it without beating around the bush. One might think it almost magic how she gets people to speak concisely with her. One might be right but that's neither here nor there.

The inner layers of Luella paint the picture of a softer woman. A woman who loves her sister, who is gentle and listens with extreme patience. A woman who smiles softly, laughs lightly, and has a bleeding heart. Who has all the time in the world to talk. She loves children and wants some of her own someday. She's kind when she wants to be, easing the woes of others, no magic involved.

History

Childhood: Luella Davina Hewitt is the product of a rather dull marriage between Drago and Bianca Hewitt. It's likely but unproven that it was a shotgun wedding and that they barely knew each other before so. Luella was born into a rather cold household. Drago and Bianca were poor and while Drago spent his time gambling away most of their money, Bianca spent hers drinking away the rest. Luella knew that the things she could do were things no one should be able to do. She was six the first time she 'saw' it. The aura around her mother. It was almost like she could see the emotion radiating off of her. There was no color but there was a feeling that Luella felt almost as of it was her own. Her mother was drunk and depressed. When Luella was nine, Isolde came along. Luella adores her sister even now. Luella loved Isolde when she was a baby. Isolde's emotions were so simple. It was easy to tell what was wrong. When Luella was ten, she first experienced the ability to change emotions. It was easier on Isolde, who was young and easily influenced. It was simple to soothe her crying and help her sleep. It was easy to encourage joy and laughter. With her mother it was harder. So far in the pit of depression and numbness, Luella couldn't do much. It was nearly impossible with her father. He was so determined to be angry and absent. There were many a night when Luella tried to urge him home from far away. It never worked. At age fourteen, Drago Hewitt failed to return home from a night of gambling. He'd accrued a rather large debt and couldn't pay it off in time. His body was found at the bottom of the river. Only Isolde cried. Bianca couldn't be bothered to raise her children after her husband died and turned to a life of partying, drugs, alcohol, and other unsavory activities. Desperate to keep her and her sister afloat, Luella took to odd jobs here and there. At sixteen she ran into the Coven of Salem. It hadn't been easy to locate people like her, but her diligent research paid off and the women of the coven were able to help support her. She was able to put herself through college and law school after she graduated at seventeen, vowing to return the Coven's good will. Luella lives in an apartment with her sister, doing pro bono work for the coven and otherwise taking on cases in a supernatural employed law firm. She easily settles disputes for the coven as well, using her empathy powers to dissuade wars and to anticipate attacks.

Powers (witches/warlocks/supernatural creatures only)

General Power: Empath

Abilities:

Emotional Aura – Everyone has an emotional aura. Sometimes it's overwhelming how many auras there are at once. Luella can simply look at someone and tell their surface level emotional state. With more effort and by touching someone, sometimes she can get images of why the emotions are happening.
Calm Aura - Luella can project a calming aura, the more people she targets with the aura, the less effective it is.
Emotional Influence – Luella, only by touching someone skin to skin, can influence the emotional state of a person. It is very effective and usually reflects her own personal emotions. She has to put in more effort to change a person's emotions to a specific emotion other than the ones she's feeling. (Luella hates touching people for this reason. She will go so far as to wear fashion gloves as to not accidentally influence others.) The effect ends as soon as she is no longer touching the person.
Sleep – By touching someone, and only by touching someone. Can Luella suggest sleep. The more agreeable a person is to sleeping, the longer it will last after she is no longer touching them. It will strain her if the aversion to sleep is particularly powerful, no matter if she continues touching a person or not.
