Lexicon :

Focus
= A magic object that allow the user to make magic but is not necessary for it practice.

Magistei (shortened to Magi) = a neutral noun broadly meaning magic user. But is now use for old style mage.

Gens = A clan of magistei made up of multiple circles or coven that decided to band together. Often because they have some similarities be it magic, skill or reputation. A Gens is responsible for protecting it members rights, dealing with legal or diplomatic problems, help with apprentices, and settle dispute within a circle/coven or between two magi. They have the authority over all the covens/circles officially registered with them.

Circle/Coven = A circle or coven is a smaller group of magistei that collaborate and support each others. Usually the members of a circle/coven will all share one common magic ability or ideology. All daily matters and problems are dealt with by them. The Gens only being contacted for serious problems, help with non magical trouble or matter they cannot solve alone.

Conji = a neutral nickname to refer to new mage. From the word "conjuring" as earlier commercial magic object or "focus" could only contain one already set and defined spell.

Arnaki = a pejorative and familiar way to refer to mage that solely use focus. Especially commercial one. Mainly use by magistei, it mean "scammer" in the old Freinch tongue. In reference to the cheap quality of some focus that lead to poor magic.

Old Mage Lore

Ranks :

Divinei (Elder)

Arcanei (Master)

Magi (Trained mage)

Runi (apprentice)

Summary :

Runi to Magi = ~10 years

Magi to Arcanei = ~10-20 years

Arcanei to Divinei = ~10-40 years

First you must find a Magi or a rank above willing to train you.

If accepted you will be registered with the circle or coven of mage your mentor belong too.

The circle has a huge influence, it's them that give the Runi the final test that will decide if they become a Magi or not. They will continue to follow and support the new initiate during all their life.

If you become eligible for a new rank, your circle give it to you automatically if they can, or inform you of the conditions you must fulfill to obtain it. A Magi cannot gain a rank without their circle approval.

You spend about 10 years as a Runi then during a ceremony of initiation called "The Blessing" you become Magi.

From then you need about another 10 years as a Magi to be able to take an apprentice and immediately receive the title of Arcanei. If you do not take one, you need to wait another 10 years to receive the titles.

Once Arcanei you can become Divinei if at least one of your apprentice become a Magi.

If none of your apprentices make it to Magi or you never took one then you can receive the title of Divinei after 40 years as an Arcanei.

All in all, counting the years as Runi, it will typically take anyone about 30-40 years to become a Divinei if they take apprentices, or about 70 years if they do not or none are approved.
