【personality】— malachiah was raised by both the streets and his mother. it shows with how he carries himself. though his posture seems casual, if one pays close enough attention they’ll realize that it’s not the case at all. malachiah is similar to a spring or a viper, waiting for an attack or to strike. he stays on high alert, making sure that he’s fully aware of his surroundings. with a life like his he can’t afford to be caught slipping or it could cost him his life. malachiah moves in silence. he doesn’t make it a habit of announcing his next move, doesn’t boat about the life style he lives. instead he keeps it close, only sharing with those in his inner circle while others are left guessing. malachiah is someone who prefers actions over words. he doesn’t waste time with trash talking, when he says that he’s going to do something he’s most definitely going to do it. the young man doesn’t bluff and it’s hard to change his mind once it’s set.


he is seen as intimidating by others. the mean mug that he usually wears is enough to keep people away all by itself, his reputation is another solid shield as wel. malachiah always has a cold look in his eyes, or so he’s been told. his look makes people believe that he’s believe that he’s up to no good, that he’s plotting trouble on the sly. people often think that he’s nothing more than a brute, a thug with only violence on his mind. instead malachiah is cunning and calculating, he things before his next move. he plans what he does carefully in order to not slip up. he’s a perfectionist in that regard, boarding on paranoid even.

malachiah is observant, something that he learned from the streets. he pays attention to detail and it has saved his life many times in the past. malachiah has a way or reading people, of figuring out if someone is bullshiting him or not and it makes others nervous. he keeps what he peeps out to himself for the most part, pretends that he doesn’t notice anything at all. people are more receptive when he plays dumb. they’re easier to manipulate when all they see is what they think he’s like.

he puts loyalty above all else and family right along with it. when malachiah is good to someone he expects the same treatment back. he’s always been good at looking after his own, taking care of those in his circle and rewarding them for their loyalty. despite what he does malachiah is community oriented to a certain point. having grown up in holden he does give back to his community, perhaps as a way to make up for what he’s doing. the kids flock to him as he gives them money and the adults praise him for how his crew protects them from other gangs and crooked officials.

【background】— Malachiah is a true Holden citizen, born and raised in the city. And he’s sure that he’ll die within it too, caught in the endless cycle that plagues the life of D Boys and those who aren’t able to leave the community. His story is nothing special, no different from many of those around him. Malachiah was born to a hardworking mother but a deadbeat father, a man who didn’t even bother to be in and out of his life. Malachiah’s mother was a proud one, so she didn’t beg for his father to pay attention to Malachiah. She would raise her son with the help of her own mother instead. And work she did. Diana worked a total of three jobs in order to put food on the table, a cleaning job that she worked with her mother and two waitressing jobs. Her dreams of attending college had been cut short with the arrival of her son, but she did what she could to provide for him.


His mother tried hard to shield him from the realities of life, she did her best to keep him away from the violence and crime that plagued their streets. But Diana wasn’t always around and as Malachiah got older, he began to notice. There were times when his mother would cry to herself, muffling her sons with her hands as she tried to figure out how rent would be paid or how they would eat. Malachiah was an observant child, he noticed that his clothes were often hand-me-downs, that they had a lot less than many people in their community. His peers made him all too aware of it.

It wasn’t long before the call of the streets beckoned him with promises of wealth. They taunted him, questioning how he could just sit by while his family struggled. Malachiah started off as a normal corner boy, but eventually he formed his own group that eventually turned into a gang. The Vice Lords made their mark on Holden, relentlessly they increased their territory and pushed back competition. Malachiah created his own Empire and his family never went without again.

Personality:
Selfish - June has a tendency to only think of himself when he acts. It is rare when he puts the needs of others above the wants of his own. Most of his acts serve the purpose of elevating his own interests, with any benefit to others being merely incidental.
Greedy - Gluttony has always been something June has struggled with. Whether it's money, food, drugs, or attention he tends to never be satisfied. He is always pushing for more and more, even to his own detriment.
Unforgiving - If there's anyone who can hold a grudge, it's June. There have been times when he's held onto ill feelings for years, even if the injury to him was only minor.
Short-Tempered - June is quick to blow a fuse, often overreacting and regretting it later. Countless fights are started because of his overly sensitive personality. He is one who acts before he thinks, and this coupled with his inability to forgive people often gets him into trouble.

Honest - Though his intentions aren't always pure of heart, June isn't one to mislead others. He is always straight up about what he means or what he's doing.
Determined - June never backs down from a challenge, no matter how difficult. When he sets his mind to a goal, he does whatever he can to accomplish it and doesn't let anyone or anything come in between him and success.
Quick-Thinking - Due to June's tendency to get himself into trouble, he has become quite talented at wiggling out of trouble by thinking on his feet. He often comes up with creative solutions to get himself out of a bind.
Intelligent - Despite often acting on impulse, June is a pretty smart guy. Throughout school (before he dropped out, at least) he consistently scored highly. Though he doesn't often have reason to reach for his book smarts, he is usually at an advantage when he does.

— BACKGROUND —
Though June was born in China, he was young enough when he left for his memory of it to be fairly non-existent. China to him was not much more than his mother's admonishments about him having it much better than she did when she was growing up. His first two years were spent in a small village located in the outskirts of Beijing. When his mother finally saved up enough, she moved the two of them to America in pursuit of the "American dream". It was in Holden where the two planted their new roots. His mother opened a small restaurant named "Lin's Plate" that served simply cooked Chinese and Chinese-American foods. June spent more time in the kitchen helping to cook food than actually at his home as a child.

When June wasn't helping his mother around the restaurant, he was at school. Though the concepts came easy to him, he struggled in school for other reasons. His short temper often led him to start fights in the classroom. Many times he was suspended or given detention. It wasn't long before June found himself completely bored of school. However, the tipping point was his sophomore year of high school when he accidentally impregnated his "girlfriend". The both of them dropped out, hoping to raise the child together. Of course, two 15-year-olds are rarely the best parents.

With additional free time after quitting school, June looked to other things to fill his time. He fell headfirst into the street life, partying, doing drugs, and even sometimes selling drugs out of his mother's restaurant. School yard troubles turned into alleyway disputes and many times June stumbled home high and battered, ignoring his mother's questions and closing himself in his room only to drink more. The last straw came when a group of kids busted in his girlfriend's door looking for June because he had stolen some valuables off of them. They left, thankfully, but his girlfriend knew that it was becoming too much and that June's behavior was putting her and their baby in danger. They moved away shortly after that when his daughter was only two. He hasn't heard from either of them since.

Now, June works on and off, usually gambling or drinking most of his money away. He does occasionally still help his mother out at her restaurant (and sells drugs out of it), which is currently facing pressure from outsiders to be bought out and replaced with a newer "shinier" restaurant.

personality
mateo's quite the misunderstood individual in
the very midst of the harsh environment he has
grown up in. widely known as holden's "nutcase",
he's grown accostumed to be treated as such by
others, sometimes even the ones closest to him.

most people have a rather hard time wrapping
their heads around the man's outer demeanor;
given the fact that he usually seems alarmingly
carefree and unbothered about his surroundings.

at first glance, one might assume that he lives in
his own little world which no one else gets to be
part of. often behaving in a quite playful manner,
no matter the circumstances, he usually gives off
the impression of not caring about a thing in the
world; including himself and his well being.

one might consider him to be extremely reckless,
not easily intimated by the ones threatening him
in times of conflict. he can be rather bold in what
he says which has led to various fights in the past.
he's the type to spit and laugh in one's face, even
when he does get himself hurt in the process.

in reality, he's alot more complex than what most
people believe him to be. due to certain traumatic
events in his early teen years, he turned out to be
rather emotionally repressed and has battled with
severe depression ever since, never receiving the
care that he needs due to lack of financial means.

in order to cope with his trauma, he fools himself
and others into believing the lies he likes to feed,
attempting to become the mask he created. add
the fact that he's usually under the influence of
varying drugs, and you have the abc's of mateo.

mostly unable to admit his feelings, his ways of
showing that he does care about something or
someone, are usually subtle and involve small
but meaningful acts of service. though he's not
one to openly express what he truly feels, he's
loyal to the people he loves and cares about.

despite the fact that he doesn't care much about
his own well being, he certainly does care about
the safety of his few loved ones and is not afraid
to get into physical fights in order to protect the
ones closest to him. beware the ones who don't
necessarily care about their own fate and know
how to hide their wit behind a playful smile.

positive traits: witty, courageous, very loyal, protective, open minded, playful, persuasive, humorous.

negative traits: inhibited, commitment issues, abrasive, reckless, stubborn, insecure, pessimistic, withdrawn.

inner fears: facing his own vulnerable feelings and being subject to emotional pain again, being rejected and/or abandoned, not being able to provide for his mother in the future.

likes: the smell of coffee, going to the movie theaters and concerts, the sound of e-guitars, shotgun kisses, preparing food with someone dear, petting stray cats and dogs outside, open minded and relaxed people to hang out with, smoking in the bathtub, etc.

dislikes: overly clingy people, relationship talk in general, anything containing too much sugar, being treated like a "nutcase", being inspected about his feelings and his past, the romance genre, his actions being taken for granted, his loved ones being mistreated, etc.

hobbies: playing on his e-guitar, going out for a relaxed stroll, sleeping in for too long whenever he can, scribbling random words and doodles in his little notebook,

flaws: his emotional surpression, his escapism through drugs, his severe commitment issues, his disregard for his own life, being kind of a prick.

background
born and raised in holden, new york, the mixed
brazilian / japanese man has always considered
this neighbourhood to be his entire world. both
of his parents were the owners of a local coffee
shop, resulting in mateo becoming familiar with
the regulations of money at a quite young age.

he spent most of his childhood in the safehaven
of his home, often helping his parents out in the
small family business when he came back from
school. although he did have some friends back
then, he used to be a very shy and reserved kid
who usually kept to himself instead of trying to
be the center of attention.

he would sometimes find himself teased by his
fellow classmates for not being nearly as tough
and confident as the other boys that lived in his
neighbourhood, resulting in him becoming very
self conscious about how other people seemed
to perceive him. upon having to witness the self
inflicted death of his father by the age of twelve,
his once openly sensible and tender personality
abruptly changed as though it had never existed.

he developed selective mutism as a result of the
death he had to witness, even refusing to talk to
his own family members. said trauma condition
lasted for about two years until he slowly began
to let himself be heard again. despite him being
willing to talk again, his emotional wounds were
never professionally treated nor talked about in
an intimate setting, resulting in him being unable
to face his own feelings without breaking down.

instead, he created a different persona in order
to not be confronted with any sort of pain as he
had before. his late teenage years were spent in
exactly such manner; now portraying himself as
the carefree and playful "nutcase" who many of
the citizens in holden have come to spend quite
some time with; whether they adore his odd self
or hate his guts.

he got involved with various gangs by the young
age of fifteen; starting out as a regular customer
and getting into drugs in attempts to cope with
his depression. he eventually became quite the
popular drug source himself once he started to
work at his mother's shop and focused entirely
on his side business. he ended up dropping out
of high school and has been directly involved in
the drug industry ever since then. very capable
in what he does after many years of first hand
experience, he certainly developed a very good
sense of whom to make serious business with.
