he early morning sun painted the Nashville skyline with a warm, golden hue as the city stirred awake. At Buttered Biscuits, the original store of the popular “country cookin'” type restaurant chain, a hive of activity had already begun. The restaurant, tucked away on a quaint street, stood proud with its newly polished sign gleaming in the sunlight. The patio had been freshly furnished with cozy wooden tables and umbrellas, promising a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal on sunny days. Flower pots lined the perimeter, adding a burst of color to the inviting outdoor space.

The parking lot was slowly filling up with cars as dedicated staff members arrived, each wearing the classic Buttered Biscuits uniform, looking sharp and ready for the day ahead. Some donned aprons with a patina of history, while others proudly displayed their brand-new ones, still crisp and untouched.

Inside the restaurant, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of motion. The sweet aroma of freshly baked biscuits wafted from the kitchen, hinting at the delightful treats soon to be served. The clattering of dishes being arranged and silverware being set echoed throughout the dining area, as hosts meticulously ensured every table was positioned just right.

The walls, once adorned with decades' worth of memories, now featured a fresh coat of paint that brought new life to the space. Old photographs, carefully preserved, showcased the restaurant's history, and local artwork celebrated the vibrant spirit of Nashville. Rustic wooden beams ran across the ceiling, adding a touch of traditional charm to the modernized ambiance.

In the kitchen, the line cooks were busy prepping ingredients with swift precision. The gleaming stainless-steel appliances stood in readiness, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to modernizing while preserving its authentic roots. The familiar sounds of sizzling pans and boiling pots filled the air, accompanied by the occasional chorus of laughter and friendly banter among the chefs.

At the bar, a sense of artistry took over as the bartenders arranged a colorful display of liquor bottles, ready to create signature cocktails that would delight guests. Shelves were meticulously stocked with an array of spirits and mixers, inviting the anticipation of thirsty patrons.

The walls in the employee break room showcased posters of famous country musicians, a nod to Nashville's rich musical heritage. A large bulletin board displayed messages of encouragement and gratitude from customers who had become part of the extended Buttered Biscuits family over the years.

“Larry and I can hardly believe this moment has come. When we opened Buttered Biscuits back in nineteen sixty-eight, we never imagined that we would keep growing the business and opening restaurants all over Tennessee!” Ruth Dawson’s face was projected onto the one empty wall they had in the kitchen and the staff was gathered around– mostly everyone paying attention to the employee-morale boost of a video that the owners had sent to them for the Grand Re-Opening.

“We are so excited to have been able to remodel and modernize many of the appliances at your location, and it warms our hearts that we were able to salvage so much of our original decor to keep the Buttered Biscuits personality alive. Our Nashville location has always been the best and most vibrant, and we hope that the remodeling gives y’all the tools you need to thrive.” It was clear that Ruth was getting choked up in her video. She was always the more emotional one.

“We made sure to stress the importance of its originality. As the original you’ve paved the way for the success of the business overall. Y’all are leaders in this company and I just know that y’all will conquer this Grand Re-Opening with determination and ease.” Ruth was all smiles, she really was a kind woman, and whenever she and Larry did their walkthroughs, almost everyone had a lovely time chatting with the both of them. It was easy to tell that her words were genuine, if a bit formal and dramatic, like she was reading off the nominees for the Oscars or something. “Larry and I are both regretful that we are unable to be present during the event, but we send our love to you and your team, and each of you will be receiving a temporary increased pay for the next week while business starts booming again.”

“Alright y’all, I’ll keep this short because I know that you probably have plenty to finish up before the doors open today, and I’m sure you’re eager to get started. Have a fantastic shift y’all!” A single tear did fall down Ruth’s cheek, and Larry– who had been silent and still in the video the entire time, wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close. Choked up, Ruth managed to sign off with her usual motto. “And remember what my Momma always said: get to cookin’, or get to steppin’.”

The video ended and the projector was turned off. Now, it was time to go back to work. The prep wasn’t going to get itself done, and there was still a lot to do. Couldn’t have customers walking through the front door without everything being pristine and perfect.

* & . DIGGY
the first sun rays of dawn peeked through the blinds, diggy stirring groggily in bed as a response to a new morning. even with his legs tangled in his cotton sheets and eyes still half-glued together by a heavy slumber, a warm feeling of excitement coursed through his veins. after a month-long leave dedicated to spontaneous adventures, his return to buttered biscuits was the day that took the cake. while he enjoyed his time off from work, there was something distinct about the feeling of returning to his second home in nashville, being reunited with regulars and co-workers to enjoy a much more modernized town gem known for it's fulfilling cuisine.

to say that his anticipation made the morning rush a blur of enthusiasm was severely understated.

throwing on his collared t-shirt and slacks selected the night before, diggy ensured to smooth out any wrinkles in sight with precision and purposefully ran his lint roller over the surface multiple times in a desperate effort to leave no traces of his fur baby upon them. that'll have to do, he thought to himself with a slight shrug before exiting his bedroom.

"you be a good girl, mama," diggy called out, greeted by familiar paws meeting his thighs. bending down, he ruffled the scruff of his dog's furry neck and kissed the top of her head to say goodbye before heading out the door.

* * *
a small smile decorated his face as he listened to the sweet sentiment of the restaurant owners. their heartfelt video ensured a good day ahead of him, and being surrounded by his co-workers once again further solidified the buzzing anticipation within the atmosphere. "'s good to be home!," he blurted out with a clap of his hands before slinging his apron over his head and tying it around his waist.

for it being five in the morning, it didn't dampen diggy's chirpy mood.

"you guys ready?" he asked to no one in particular, letting the question hang in the air for anyone to answer.

Mama, come here; Approach, appear. Daddy, i'm alone; cause this house don't feel like home. If you love me, don't let go. Hold on, hold onto me cause i'm a little unsteady. Mother, I know that you're tired of being alone. Dad, I know you're trying to fight when you feel like flying.

i'm still fighting for my peace.

It was the seventh night in her creaky old bed, about the fourth night of having a massive knot in her shoulder, but the thirtieth day where Raelyn Seraphine Helios was free. Thirty days prior, Rae scrapped up all her savings and bolted away from Kingsport. Every filthy dollar bill she pulled out of her g-string or plucked from a drunkard creep's fingers, the few couple of dollars men would throw on her as they left her on the bed and walked out; It was what she needed to leave. Without a word, Rae up and left, she packed what few things she could carry in a duffel bag, threw it over her shoulder, & when everyone was at work, she sprinted. No exaggeration; the blonde did her best to keep her cool, covering her body from head to toe, trying to be nonchalant, just until she could get to the light, hook a right to head away from the club, then she hauled ass to the bus stop.

When asked where she was headed, all she said was "Wherever your last stop is." Must have been Rae's lucky day. She awkwardly shuffled to the dimmest seat on the bus, hugged her bag close to her chest, and kept her head on a swivel. She had done this before, the whole running away from home act. Her very first home, Woodrow, she up and left after her brother died. She had a gut feeling that her foster parents would give her away & she didn't want that. As a ten year old, wandering away from home for two hours felt like two years, but it got her far enough away that her parents never found her. The town of Kingsport was a 30 minute drive away from Woodrow, nothing like the trip Raelyn was wanting to take now. She wanted the sun to set and rise again before she got off the bus. She wanted to end up in a different state, a different world. Maybe then she would feel safe from Fredrick Wilson and his money-hungry peons.

Every time she started to drift off, the bus would stop to exchange more passengers, and Rae couldn't stop herself from flinching & trying to look at each and every person that got onto the bus. It was about 3am when Rae first got on the bus, & by the time the bus reached its final destination, it was 8am the next day. As much as she wanted to keep driving to get out of Tennessee, Nashville wasn't half bad. Five hours away, and it was the biggest, most bustling city in Tennessee. There was no way Fred had any peons there, right?

The first thing Rae needed was food. She didn't completely feel safe, but she was definitely hungry. Her body was starting to feel the effects of so much adrenaline, & needed more energy. She had no plans for what to do now that she was gone, but she knew step one was food. Of course the first little place she walked into was Buttered Biscuits; Nothing was as comforting as good, southern cooking to a terrified ex-hooker on the run.

Long story short, there was a sign on the door that said the restaurant was hiring, Rae spoke to the manager on shift, had an interview on the spot & basically was hired. Rae talked about how she had no real work experience & then began to overshare about her entire life. The manager was sweet and caring & went to talk to the general manager about offering her a job. Just a few minutes later, Rae's meal was on the house as she was hired. She was told she would start in a month, after the restaurant had their big remodeling & were ready to have their grand reopening.

She left the restaurant in high spirits, knowing she know needed a place to sleep at night.

The rest leads us to Rae having a massive knot in her shoulder on her first day of work. She had found a pretty mediocre apartment complex, shelled out most of her savings to put down a deposit & even paid the first months rent in advanced. It left her with enough to make it about a month into her new job, which she hoped would make her enough money to make the next month's rent.

All her worries had been pushed to the back of her mind, fortunately for her; Rae was ready to become a working girl, ready to start her life without any restrictions and pressures to do things she didn't want to do.

She woke up to her phone alarm going off at 6:00am in the morning. The sun was barely beginning to light up the sky, painting the horizon in a beautiful gradient that started with a deep, burnt orange which faded into a purplish-grey sky. Rae had never woken up so early in the morning before, but she loved it, she immediately sprung out of bed to get ready for work. Was she a morning person? Or just excited to start this new chapter of her life?

Probably a bit of both.

Rae knew she had to be at Buttered Biscuits right at 5am. The restaurant opened up at 7am, but there was a lot to go over and prepare with the grand re-opening happening. There were a few butterflies of nerves that fluttered in her chest, but as she twisted up her hair to clip into place with her favorite golden hair-clip, the butterflies settled down. This was the first day of her new life, what could possibly go wrong?

Throwing some necessities into a canvas tote bag (she bought it at a thrift store!), she headed out of her apartment, and out into the morning. It was about 6:30am now, the sky being lit up by some more orange hues as the sun chased the night away. Unlocking her bike from the bike rack, she threw the lock into her tote, put one earbud in & started playing her music. Rae often prided herself in making the perfect playlist to fit any mood she went through, & the playlist she listened to as she pedaled to work was not an exception. The entire ride to work was a total of four songs, but she didn't stop her music as she locked her bike up and made her way in. The sunny blonde was quietly humming to herself as she made her way through the back door of the restaurant & to the locker room. There, she found a locker with her name & a brand new server uniform hanging up. A smile grew on her face, there was even a name-badge with her very own name on it!

Grabbing the uniform off the hanger, she started to do a little happy dance, grooving to whatever song was playing through her earbuds. Her groove continued as she got settled in her new locker.

Watching the sunrise from her porch Delilah sat on a rocking chair cupping her mug of coffee. Letting out a deep sigh as the morning birds chirped around her, taking in the stillness something she rarely gets to enjoy anymore. As if on que Delilah's alarm went off, she shut it off sliding the phone in her pocket.

Today she'd be heading back to work. Buttered Biscuits had been closed for last month for some remodeling and today was the re-opening. Delilah didn't get too much of a break as she spent most of the month taking care of her fathers worsening health. She had a knot in her stomach this whole week knowing she'd have to go back and wouldn't be able to be right by his side. The only reason she was up before the sun was she didn't get any sleep, wrecked with the guilt that she wouldn't be absent more and more. He wouldn't be alone for long as the at home nurse she and her sibling Katrina were paying for would be coming over.

Delilah finished her coffee as the front door opened. Kat trudged out clearly just waking up. "Hey Lilah, uh your timing on the stove was going off." Kat stretched a bit with a yawn. "Don't worry, i pulled the cookies out the oven." Kat smiled "I'm gonna hop in the shower before we head off to work." "Thanks for grabbing them." Delilah smiled at Kat before they headed in to get ready for the day. Leaning back in the chair Delilah pulled out her phone, she looked at her budget for the week tensing up at how tight everything was. Insurance was a bitch so she had to take out a loan, yet still was paying out of pocket alongside Kat. Dropping her phone in her lap Delilah leaned with a groan covering her face with her hands. Grabbing her phone Delilah stood up with a sigh and headed back inside the house.

Walking into the warm orange light of her home. She headed down the Hallway that was lined with photos of her and Kat her slippers muffing the sounds of the floor. She entered the kitchen finding the cookie sheet laying on top the stove. She went to the cupboard that was filled haphazardly with mismatched Tupperware, opening up the door rummaging thru the contents before finding one that was the right size and also had a lid. She then transferred the cookies she had made earlier into the container before calling out to her sibling. "Hey Kit-Kat, we should get going!" She shouted, glancing at the clock on the stove that read 6:03. Delilah wanted to get there a bit earlier in case they needed her for anything.

She walked out the kitchen slowly walking to her fathers room. She glanced up at the ceiling with a shaky breath before opening the door. She hated seeing father like this, the lively, rambunctious man who was full of life was slowly being taken away from her. She stood in the doorway, "Hey dad, Uh we're about to head work." Delilah rubbed her arm "But uh Bethany will be here in about 25 to help out." She said, forcing a smile. "Okay Lilah, have a good day." He said softly. Delilah nodded with another feeble smile before gently closing the door. Clasping her hands together she made her way back to the front of the house.

Glancing into the kitchen where Kat was standing munching on one of the cookies. "Hey! those are for everyone, don't eat them all." she said accusingly. Kat put both their hands in the air "I'm just eating one" They said through a mouthful of the baked good before swallowing. "Or maybe two." They said, grabbing another one, before sliding the container over to Delilah. Delilah chucked, grabbing the cookies "You all set?" Kat nodded and the two sisters headed out to work. Delilah drove them so Kat could finish her makeup in the car.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was around 6:30 when the two arrived. Delilah checked out their appearance in the mirror one last time touching up her lipstick and got smudged from her morning coffee. Leaning over to grab her bag Delilah stepped out of the car. "Hey Kat, are you gonna stick in the car for a bit?" The sister just nodded with a smile, not wanting to have to deal with anyone else until the last possible moment. "Okay just lock up the car when you're done." Delilah said, tossing the keys to them.

Delilah's heels clicked against the pavement as she made her way inside the restaurant. She wandered to the back to put her stuff in her locker before finding something to do, or someone to bother. She saw her sister getting things set up at the bar, but didn't want to pester them anymore. Scanning the area they remember they left their cookies in their tote bag.

Heading back to the lockers Delilah wandered in seeing someone she didn't recognize , she knew everyone who was currently working with her so this blond girl must be someone new. Delilah gave her a warm smile before walking over to her locker, pulling out the Tupperware. "Hey, I'm Lilah" she said, walking over to the new girl. "I think you're new, so if you need anything don't be afraid to ask me." She said with a smile. "Oh! Do you want a chocolate chip cookie?"

Rise and Shine! Zeke thought to himself as his hand reached out to grab his phone and turn his alarm off before it got too loud. It was an old habit of his since Bernie had chewed him out when they were kids for letting his alarm blast too loud for far too long. She was valid to complain, and old habits died hard. At least it saved his eardrums the assault.

His fingers skated across the screen, turning off the alarm and swiping away a few notifications while he was at it. His morning routine was a relaxing one and he liked to keep it that way. No sense in rushing out of bed and running late (although he sorta did that anyway, mostly for the vibes). He'd usually take some screen time right off the bat, catch up on text messages, check social media, verify that he still had people following him on SoundCloud (score!!).

He pulled up his frequently contacted list and selected a name that usually brought a smile to his face and caused his eyes to roll. Kat. He tapped away at a message, an easy smirk alight on his face as he did so.

KitKat
me
You work today??
me
Been a while since I seen you...

Going back to work had him thinking about them all over again. Sure over the last month they'd had a fun little session here and there, and they were usually sending memes back and forth. But it had been a couple weeks since he'd had the pleasure of hanging around them, even if they could be aggravating as hell sometimes.

One message down, Zeke moved on with his routine, this time pulling up his messages with his sister. She'd be upset if he didn't send her his usual morning update.

Lilah Bu...
me
First day back DUDE
me
Pumped as shiiiiiiiit.
me
Can't wait to see how many new cuties we hired.
me
Love you talk later! xx

His heart sank after the messages sent when he realized that he'd texted the wrong Delilah. While his sister's contact name in his phone was Lilah Bug, the Delilah he worked with was Lilah Buttered Biscuits... which usually cut off due to length. He really needed to change that, because now he'd sent a bit of an awkward text to Delilah, and he was going to have to deal with that at some point in the day most likely.

Lilah Bug
me
Bro I justtttt texted my coworker instead of you.
me
Eventful day already
me
First day back tho so I'll talk later!

His face still hot with embarrassment, he scrolled through the rest of his messages and decided he was good on those.

After a couple swipes on Tinder he was ready to crawl out of bed and get ready for the day ahead of him. The Grand Re-Opening. It sounded like a breath of fresh air now that he'd had about a month off work-- paid thank the lord.

A quick shower and an animated pep-talk to himself in the mirror later, Zeke was ready to wear his line-cook uniform once again. He slipped the elastic-waisted pants over his boxers, which featured Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls cartoon, and tossed his chef coat over his shoulder, reluctant to add more layers if he was going to be outside for any amount of time before clocking in.

He pulled out his phone to get an Uber and headed to his kitchen, where he pulled a foil baking sheet out of the fridge. He peeled back the top later of foil to gaze down at his hard work- a batch of breakfast burritos he'd prepared himself the night before to give to the staff this morning. Three kinds; bacon and egg, sausage and egg, and of course potato and egg for any vegetarians. Each breakfast burrito was wrapped carefully in wax paper and labeled according to type. With a smile to himself, Zeke covered the burritos back up and fished around in his fridge for the Styrofoam cup that held his home-made salsa. He pulled it out, closed the fridge, and stacked the salsa on top of the carefully-packaged burritos.

His phone buzzed and alerted him that his Uber had arrived. He gathered his backpack and his food and raced out the door, clumsily locking it behind him in his haste.

He slid into the Uber, eager to to arrive.

- - - - - -

Completely in character for himself, Zeke strode through the doors six minutes late, and clocked in without a care. He dropped his backpack off in the breakroom lockers, pulled his chef coat on over his exposed shoulders and tight-fitting white tank. The burritos and salsa he took to the walk-in, assuming it would be better to announce them later when more people had arrived and gotten settled, than now.

It was a good call considering the video that played as Zeke worked his way down the prep-list to get ready for the shift. Judging by the length of it, today was going to be long and difficult. He didn't care. Adrenaline was coursing through his veins, swirling around with the red bull he'd guzzled down when he'd first walked in.

The owners were sweet from what he'd experienced, but the video speech seemed to drag on forever. Zeke found himself pausing his prep to pull out his phone and check to see if he had any messages. None yet, but it sparked inspiration enough to send another one.

$CashMoniii
me
Monica!!!
me
There's breakfast burritos in the walk-in.
me
You got a ten min head start before I tell the rest of the team and unleash the horde lmao.

As her friend, Zeke felt the obligation to let Monica know a little early about the food he'd brought. That, and Zeke thought Monica was fine as fuck, he couldn't waste the perfect opportunity to throw a little flirtation her way before turning his attention back to his prep list.

After chopping onions, and hearing the end of the speech, Zeke figured he was more than overdue for a little break, he'd been going nonstop since he'd walked through the front door-- aside from his little break to flirt with Monica.

This time his break had a different motivator- food and a beverage, but first he was going to slip out to the dumpsters and take a couple puffs off the blunt he'd packed in his backpack the night before.

He strolled into the locker room to grab the doob-tube that held the blunt and slipped it into his pocket. The smell of cookies reached his nose and he turned around, eyes landing on Delilah. He instantly felt the urge to start spitting apologies, but was too proud to do so and held his head high, instead finding his attention drawn to the cute blonde Delilah was offering a cookie too. Ah, speaking of new cuties they'd hired, this must be one of them. And holy hell, she really was cute.

Obviously unable to deny himself, he approached the conversation in his laid-back manner. "Oh what's this? Cookies for breakfast?" He arched a brow and shot a smile Delilah's way. "Hey Lilah, glad to see you back here." His eyes trailed over to the new girl, and his smile shifted to a slightly more flirtatious smirk. "I'm Zeke, nice to meet you newbie." He shot her a charming wink before calling out a little loudly to the rest of the staff that seemed to be milling around.

"Hey there's breakfast burritos in the walk-in! Free for all, just don't be a dick and try to share 'em, okay?" His voice called out and caught the interest of some staff members. Zeke, however, returned back to his initial intention, and lowered his voice. "I'm headed out for a smoke- if they ask for me. I absolutely didn't do that."

Without a further word, he ducked out of the locker room and back into the kitchen to slip out the back door for a moment.

Florian groaned as the piercing ring of his alarm clock roused him from his fog of sleep. Through barely slitted eyes, he could see that the sun hadn't even risen far enough to shine directly through his window. Why was his alarm set so freakishly early again?

Suddenly, he sat bolt upright, fully awake and ready to seize the day. It was his first shift at Buttered Biscuits today! In his befuddled state, he had forgotten the excitement that was sure to come. Quickly, he got out of bed and threw on an outfit, not bothering to even check if his socks matched or not. Bounding down the stairs into the kitchen, he nearly tripped, but managed to skid to a stop and grab a bite to eat. He was glad he was alone in his state of wakefulness; he knew his roommate would have a hard time coping with this much early morning enthusiasm.

Checking the time, he realised he still had quite a lot of time before he had to show up at work. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough time to get to his favourite beach and back. He decided he would go for an early morning jog. Turtle probably had some energy to wear off anyway.

He called softly to his puppy, ruffling her short fur when she padded up to him. Snapping the leash onto her collar, he set out into the sunrise at a brisk pace.

After arriving back home from his exercise, he poured a bit of kibble into Turtle's bowl for her breakfast. Then, he took a quick shower before heading to Buttered Biscuits. He was just about to fling the back door open and announce his presence, when the handle turned under his hand.

Before his brain had time to process what was happening, the door swung open, its handle jabbing solidly into his lower abdomen. He let out a small "oof" and stumbled backwards.

"Dreadfully sorry," he apologised to the man coming through the doorway. "I shouldn't have been standing there for such a long time. Not the best place for an internal monologue, right?" He laughed, trying to erase any negative impressions he might have given off initially. "I'm Florian, by the way," he added, offering his hand to meet his new companion.

❝ I got bills to pay ❞

It wasn't her dusty old alarm clock that woke Phil up but the shrill voice of her beloved roommate belting out ABBA. Phil groaned as she sat up stretching out her arms and legs. Yesterday was a long day, and today would be another long one. The sky was still dark outside and would be until for another couple of hours. Phil shook out her long curly brown hair and set to getting ready for the day. She brushed and pulled back her hair, dressed cleanly in a navy button up and jeans. Her mouth still tasted of mint when she walked into the small kitchen/living space she shared with her brother and Willa.

Willa was also awake far earlier than any sane person due her job at the call center nearby. She worked nights and would get Jason ready for school when Phil worked mornings, and then sleep the day away. This schedule had worked for the past year for them yet it was undoubtedly lonely as Phil got to see less and less of her friend.

"Oh good you're up, all ready for work?" Willa beamed, she stood at the stove scrambling eggs.

"Yeah, I mean, yeah," Phil rubbed the sleep from their eyes, "Also could you quiet down before you wake up Jason?"

"Right, yes, growing boys need their sleep," Willa scraped the eggs onto a waiting plate. She held the plate out to Phil who sleepily gobbled them down.

"Jay has soccer after school today and Lydia's parents are going to take him and bring him home," Phil said though mouthfuls of food.

"Awesome, do you want me to make you a sandwich for lunch?" Willa leaned back against the counter.

"Nah, I'm just going to get Kat to get food for me from the linecooks," Phil shrugged as she washed off her plate.

"Phil one day you will need to make peace with linecooks," Willa laughed.

"Yes, well today is not that day."

Phil walked through the ally at the back of the restaurant. Garbage bins spotted the walls as well as a couple of milk crates right beside the stairs, the ground covered in cigarette butts. She sighed before opening the dingy metal door and entering the back room.

"Alright if any of you fuckers have touched my station, I'm going to fry you up and make you today's special," Phil loudly announced. Phil didn't have a bag to put into her locker everything she needed was already here or could fit in her pockets. She nodded in a halfway polite gesture to Zeke as he passed her on his way to the back door. It was polite because Phil was Phil but only halfway so because Zeke was Zeke (read a linecook).

Phil did not believe in being slow and so was quickly at the front doing her prep work. She cut limes and lemons, wiped down her workspace a second and third time before setting all of her bottles where she wanted them. Morning shifts were less alcohol, more teas and coffees. Towards lunch they'd get requests for soda and the like. She finished so quickly that she began to do Kat's prepwork as she was nowhere in sight. Phil felt good, she was ready to go, she was making sure others were ready and she hadn't had to answer any stupid questions yet.

Monica awoke to a sudden stirring in her bed. She looked to her right, catching a glimpse of last night's companion. Her roommates had talked her into going to a party that was happening upstairs in their apartment complex. Although she held back and didn't drink to avoid any hangover the morning she was meant to return to work at Buttered Biscuits, she couldn't help but flirt with a cute girl that was in attendance. One thing lead to another and she found Clara (if she remembered her name correctly) in her bed. She checked her phone to see how early it was, it only about five minutes before her alarm was meant to go off. She turned off the alarm as to not bother the sleeping girl next to her and proceeded to scroll through instagram for a few minutes.

Finally deciding to haul herself out of bed she got up, threw on some sweatpants, and tiptoed out of her room. She went to the small kitchen and made herself a cup of coffee. She was functioning on a low amount of sleep, but she'd had less in the past. Monica always had an absurd amount of energy no matter how well rested she actually was. As her coffee was cooling off a bit she made herself a piece of toast as well, she figured she'd just snag some food from work later. Finishing her food quickly, she snuck back into her room and grabbed her work clothes, a Buttered Biscuits uniform she'd had for years. She went to the bathroom she shared with her roommates, which was of course a bit of a chaotic mess since it was shared by three girls, to get ready.

Once she'd gone through her standard morning routine, she was ready to get out the door. Passing through the kitchen again, grabbing her tote bag as she saw one of her roommates, May, had gotten up. She always was a light sleeper. "Sorry, did I wake you?" Monica apologized.

"Yeah, but it's fine, I'll probably get back to sleep, just wanted to get a little water. You look good today," May smiled.

"Thanks babe," Monica replied. Being called babe by Monica was akin to being called bro or dude, she used the title for everyone. It was a bit strange to those just meeting her and often read as very flirtatious, but that's just Monica for you. "Oh! By the way, so you don't think there's an intruder in the apartment, there's a girl in my room. Her name's Clara... at least I think, it was kind of loud at that party. She should just leave when she gets up though."

"You whore," May teased. One night stands were a common occurrence in the apartment, so she was not surprised. "I'm glad you had fun last night though. And good luck back at work today!"

"Good luck getting back to sleep," Monica blew a kiss to her roommate and exited the apartment.

Monica pulled up to the parking lot of Buttered Biscuits in her old ass Jeep, which fortunately didn't give her any problems this morning. She swiftly entered the building, ready to get to work. She had to admit, she was excited to be back and see most of her coworkers. Placing her things in her locker, she went right out to the main din ing room to begin her prep work. She began to set out silverware in perfect order and after a while she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. She should probably turn that off for work. Pulling out her phone she saw Zeke had texted about free breakfast burritos. Sweet. She finished up putting silverware out on the table she was working on and hustled to the walk in. She snatched a potato burrito and put a bit of salsa on it as well. Just as she took a bite of the burrito and decided to exit the walk in to avoid the horde of hungry staff that would arrive when Zeke announced the burritos.

Perching by a counter with a POS system located in the corner of the restaurant to eat, Monica got out her phone to text Zeke back. you absolute legend 😘The text read. Just then, she received a text from her other roommate, Kaylee, whom she had not seen earlier this morning. SLUT. Monica laughed quietly when she read the message. whores gonna whore, bitch. She responded. She began to finish up her burrito so she could get back to prep work and avoid getting into any trouble on the first day back.

I've kept your love in a photograph, the memories we made for ourselves. Where our hearts are never broken & time is forever frozen. So I'll keep you, inside the pocket of my ripped jeans, holding you closer til our eyes met. I'll wait for you to come home.

loving can hurt.

There had been countless sleepless nights in Theodore's new place. Located just ten minutes outside the heart of Nashville, he was finally away from most of the hustle and bustle of the city. What should've been considered peaceful and relaxing, Theo found to be eerie and unnerving. Ever since he was a kid, Theo never did well with being alone in the quiet. Growing up, his parents always had some kind of white noise going on in his room or even some bedtime stories running on a CD as he fell asleep. Theo's convinced it came from his dad rocking him to sleep in front of the TV as a baby.

But then when he and Emma lived together, she couldn't sleep if it was dead silent. She enjoyed the peace and quiet that silence brought. It took a while for the two to work something out, but Theo came to realize that the presence of someone else brought him enough comfort to get him to fall asleep. Then when their daughter, Aurora, was born, he always offered to sleep outside her door, letting Emma sleep in peace & Theo ready to take care of her at a moment's notice. But once Emma was gone, Theo broke all the "good parent rules" and slept in Aurora's room every night.

So when Theo had to move into the city, without his daughter, his wife, or his parents, the noise of the streets became his new comfort. The honking, the occasional bass thumping from a car's subwoofers passing by, even the little bout of shouting and laughter floated through the streets helped lull him to sleep. But now, he bought a proper house, that was filled with only him, & there was no white noise to comfort him to sleep. He found himself desperately wishing for a thunderstorm to hit, just to help him sleep.

Needless to say, for the past few weeks, without going into work, Theo felt like he was going crazy. It was finally the day when the restaurant was having its grand re-opening, and he had never felt more ready to go back to work. Not like he could go to the restaurant during rush hour, curl up on the floor & fall asleep. But most days, he figured he could just work himself until he was exhausted enough to just pass out when he got in his bed.

He had been up for the past 3 hours. Lately, he hadn't even bothered laying down to sleep. He tried white noise or rain noise apps on his phone, but they weren't the same. He knew the overwhelming guilt and pain of loss and grief would suffocate him, not allowing him to go to sleep. Theo normally just stayed up gaming, or mindlessly watching a show or movie. But once the clock struck 3am, he figured it was a reasonable time to get ready for work... even though work didn't start until 5am.

Forcing himself off of his couch, he made his way to his bathroom, stripping his clothes that he had been wearing for God only knows how long, and stepping into an ice cold shower. He had his music playing, just putting his liked songs on shuffle and letting it run wild. Showering was always a quick task for Theo, even for how long and thick his hair was, but he was always very efficient in his routine. He'd shampoo his hair, and let it sit while he started exfoliating his body. Rinsed both, began to massage his conditioner into his hair, let it sit while he soaped himself up, then after rinsing both he'd brush his teeth then clean his face, specifically. He had Emma to thank for his entire routine. Before being so close to her, Theo used the same bottle for shampoo and body wash, not even conditioner.

However, this shower took longer than most of his showers. There were many times were Theo just stood under the freezing water, letting it run down his back, saturating his hair, and swirl down the drain. While he was more than ready to go to work, he was also finding it extra hard to build up the motivation to go to work. He got stuck in a funk, a routine, one that was proving bad for his mental health; Wake up, sit on the couch, go for a run, come home, sit on the couch, realize the sun had set, move to his room to game, lay in bed until the sun came up, and start all over. Sometimes he'd remember to eat, most days he didn't. There was something in him that wanted to stay in that routine forever, that wanted to give in to the helpless feeling that ate away at him every day.

But that wasn't how he was going to get his daughter back. And that was the only motivation he needed to turn off the faucet and step out of the shower at exactly 3:52am.

Finding some clean clothes proved a hard task, seeing how he hadn't done laundry in quite some time. He knew it wasn't that big a deal, since the uniform was waiting for him at the restaurant. By the time he was in his car, dressed & ready to go, it was about 4:19am. He figured he'd get to the restaurant right before 4:30 and beat everyone there. After triple checking that his house was locked & that he had everything he needed for the long day ahead, Theo pulled out of his driveway and began towards the restaurant.

As he turned into Buttered Biscuits' restaurant, he noticed a very familiar car in the parking lot; Octavia. He couldn't help the small smirk that came to his face. Of course she was there before him. Theo had only been at Biscuits for three years, and been manager for a year. Octavia had been at Biscuits for seven years, and been every position POSSIBLE at the restaurant. She showed him all the ropes of being a manager, and never once treated him like a helpless little boy, like he constantly felt the first few weeks of being a manager.

Octavia always brought a wave of comfort to Theo. There was a sense of warmth that pricked at his chest as he parked his car next to hers. She was always going above and beyond to make sure everything was in tip top shape for the restaurant and the employees.

Walking in through the back door, Theo quickly found his way to the manager's office, where Octavia was hard at work.

"Well well, if it isn't the one and only Tavie, beating us all to be the first to clock in." He poked a playful joke at her, causing a genuine smile to grow on his face. He set his stuff down in the office, and sat down across from Octavia, the two of them catching up and debriefing to get ready for the grand re-opening.

~~

Soon enough, other employees began trickling in, & Theo figured it was time for him to do the rounds, check on the restaurant and make sure everything in the kitchen was in proper shape for the starting shift. Going through his tedious checklist, he finished checking the stoves, fryers, sink, dishes, food closet and walk-in freezer. By the time he was done, it was a little after 5 & Theo knew he had to go put on his uniform. Upper management and marketing had some dumb thing about always wearing the uniform when on the clock.

Making his way to the locker room, his ears heard a familiar voice, someone else who brought a smile to his face.

"Diggy! Long time no see!"

I-SPIT-AT-COPS

scroll

4am feels like the apocalypse.

Frozen in limbo where only the lonely variety are still awake, where only the masochistic are waking, the city is revived from icy lapse as dawn looms the periphery. Thawing sallow buildings and melting streets of quietude to recast sentience, waking early may ensure plentiful harvest of the day’s time, yet Ren would rather decay like a corpse.

It’s a gentle nudge at first, a hungry pet trying to wake you from a dream. A hand scours the mattress to slap the phone before recoiling to olympian cloud sheets. Noise recedes in tandem. Life is good.

Until life is not good. Second intrusion punctuating the room. Another slap from the duvet, more silence. God bless.

It is the third alarm that stirs him enough to sit up. Sheaves of black hair and hatred syphoned directly for the bright phone which trembled at max volume with its tassel of tacky charms. Defrosted enough to stop snoozing the clock and remain awake, he’d gather remnants of warmth to hoard around himself, a blanket worm to embody the very mature sentiment of:

Don’t wanna.

And when faced with time-sensitive tasks, the mind roams and seeks solace in corners of the unreasonable.

He could fake his death, abscond into nature and live off the land. If no one else, at least Hozier would want that for him.

Marry a rich person. Become widowed after they take an unfortunate and mildly suspicious topple down a staircase. Was he above murder? He stood on a snail once, never quite recovered.

Rob a bank? It didn’t sound that hard— no. No no. No. A thought too dangerous to let linger.

And while the man deliberates if he really needed this job, his phone is intermittently checked, watching the pixels slip by like grains of sand. Tries to gauge how long he can push those numbers, how long he can marinate in bed like a rotisserie chicken.

And alas, the conclusion is as it always was. Capitalism calls and he begrudgingly answers.

—

Morning was breaching lightless horizon by the time he dragged himself out the door, clad in black and brooding the inevitable. After the traditional offer of a bread slice on a dumpster lid— for the rotund little squirrel he’d adopted from afar (lovingly named Nintendo DS) —the busser continued on his way without further detour. Hands bundled in pockets and head lowered, in the dark it is difficult to decipher from weary shift-worker or treacherous assailant.

Melting through segments of the town like a shade, it seems it’s not just Ren who haunts these sunless passages, as in the quiet canal leading to the restaurant's back entrance does he stumble across the pair.

Strange.

At this hour Ren couldn’t be bothered engaging with others. Grim and looking sour, roomy leather jacket and downturned scowl, the epitome of Do Not Perceive Me. A gaze of lead doesn’t linger, passes over them like sleet. One familiar (children’s coloring book, derogatory) line-cook, and one lost (blonde, also derogatory) California surfer.

Ren doesn’t stop to say hello, yet the two are sharp on the retina, and he shifts his cinder stare to the accused as he passes.

Two men loitering in the alleyway.

Suspicious.

Ashen eyes dropped to the handshake between them. To most onlookers, an introduction. Ah, but to the likes of Ren, something else entirely.

“Sheesh, dealing at 5am?” There’s nothing like starting the day with a misunderstanding. “Get help. Eat a mango.”

And before the addicts could protest Ren’s assumption, he’d disappeared inside the restaurant with the enthusiasm of a drowned cat. And oh my god it was so bright, hand raised to shield eyes, and oh my god everyone was so loud. It seemed most were teeming with excitement, eager and spirited, hellos and halos for eyes and honeydew for smiles. Perfectly reasonable, warm, and sensible.

And then there is Ren.

Fire-tongued and already measuring the time between now and clocking out.

He can come to only one reason for the elation: everyone must be deranged. Like static condensing into a smooth mirror does it all coalesce into understanding; everyone had so much energy; Ren might also enjoy coming to work if he was stoked on drugs.

A slow exhale left his nose, unspooling some unhappy tension. His grief is spoken absentmindedly to air, quiet and to nobody in particular.

“I should become a sheep farmer.”

Zahna Cole
line cook
an early start
buttered biscuits kitchen
[/tab]
It's you and me, babe

Starting the day isn’t the easiest process in the world, but for Zahna it has a sort of cadence that brings her peace of mind. It starts with a level of awareness in whatever dream she’s having, going from being a spectator to an actual player, then it’s a slow fade into darkness as it transitions from a dream to her thinking about said dream. Then, her sleepy brain rests in the darkness for a bit, nice and content before she starts to rouse into awareness by the sound of her alarm; which she promptly turns off

Now, Zahna knows herself, if she doesn’t get up at that first inkling of wakefulness right when she turns off her alarm, she will inevitably drift right back off to sleep at least 3 more times. Some days are easier than others, but she has another step in place to keep her desire to sleep from hindering her routine. And it comes right on time with a loud, ringing of her phone indicating a facetime call.

She fumbles around for her phone on her nightstand and clicks accept once it’s within her grasp, being greeted by the tired, but smiling face of her older sister on the bright screen.

“Good morning Nashville. It is currently 4:00am, sunrise 5:55am, sunset 7:52pm, with a forecast of tired as balls. Stay tuned for more updates!”

“For someone who has yet to open their eyes, you’re being awfully obnoxious this morning,” Zahna yawns, sitting up in her bed to slide and out and shuffle towards her bathroom, flipping the light on.

“Is it really a wake-up call if it’s not a little obnoxious?” Kiara retorts, cracking a bleary eye open to wink at her sister before promptly shutting them back.

“Ah, ah, open those eyes, unless you want me to play trap music for my wake-up call tomorrow.” Zahna didn’t have to look to see her sister flipping her off out of the corner of her eye, but she did have to turn her face away so she wouldn’t see her crack a smile. Can’t have her thinking she’s anything but annoying or her big head will get even bigger.

They go back and forth for a bit, nonsense and nerves about the day, before falling into a companionable silence as they get ready for the day. With her hair already done in braids, it doesn’t take Zahna long to finish up and head out the door, saying her goodbyes to her sister before driving to her workplace.

Before she knows it, she’s in front of Buttered Biscuits taking a few breaths to settle stray nerves. The upsides about working at 5am were that Z got to cook, she didn’t have to make much small talk until the rest of the staff filtered in later, and she got breakfast. Downsides? It was 5am and if Z had her way, she’d be a rich, housewife who never had to touch a 9-5, but it is what it is...

Shoving her cross-body bag into her locker, Z tosses on her apron and heads into the kitchen. Prepping vegetables was honestly one of her favorite things to do in the morning, and starting with that made the drone of the, albeit touching, corporate video commemorating the reopening of their location a little bearable. Then she moves on to other things, setting out the containers needed for the morning. She flits around doing this and that, her concentration only breaking at the announcement of breakfast burritos. She's one of the first to grab one of out the fridge and makes quick work of it.

It's then that Zahna decides it's a good time for a pause and heads over to one of the other line cooks, quirking an eyebrow at the sight of her still working away. “Hey Phil, I thought you already finished your prep? You don’t want to take a pause before we really start?”

Octavia was always an early riser, and today was no exception. In fact, it was even more of a reason for her to rise a little earlier than normal.

Call her extra, because most people did, but Octavia had set her alarm for what her brother called "o-dark thirty". It was three in the morning, and Octavia always thought her brother was so extra about it. He never really liked the early mornings like she and her father did. They were always up with a cup of coffee before the sun even kissed the sky, every morning, even if she'd gone out partying the night before. She was just a boss ass bitch like that.

In true Capricorn fashion-- she was a Libra sun but she couldn't lie, the Capricorn moon side of her really called to her more often than not-- she hated wasting her time. Sleep made it on the list of time-wasting activities. Of course it did, what could she even accomplish while asleep? Nothing. Nothing at all.

She certainly couldn't write prep lists while she was sleeping, which was all she'd been able to think about since before she'd gone to sleep the night before.

Octavia never struggled to pull herself up and out of bed after her alarm went off. Her brother would let his go off five or six times before waking up. She thought that was annoying as hell. She was out of bed no more than five minutes after her alarm, and set about getting herself ready for work. Hair and makeup had to be pristine, always. She took pride in her appearance, and in her job no matter how thankless it could be sometimes.

Then it was time to tackle her coffee problem. It'd been a year since she stopped hitting up the local Starbucks before work-- the eight dollar lattes were adding up and eve though she loved to exude bad bitch energy, she couldn't fathom spending anymore unnecessary funds on a cute little coffee. Instead, she started making them at home and keeping them in various coffee cups she had in the kitchen-- whether it was iced or warm. She was happy with that decision, the coffee was always exactly the way she wanted it when she did it this way. And it was faster too. The drive-throughs could get so wildly clogged in the mornings. Everyone looking for that Starby's fix.

It wasn't long before Octavia was ready and walking out the door, coffee in hand-- today's choice was was inspired by an Almond Joy.

--

Staff was set to arrive at five in the morning, and Octavia knew she'd need to be early anyway. Perhaps she shouldn't have arrived just after four a.m., but the prep for the day had her antsy and ready to move and work.

It would be easier for her to think in the office anyway.

It ended up being the right call, before she knew it she had finished all the prep lists, and they were now scattered amongst the desk top in neat little piles with each crew-member's names written on them so they'd know exactly what task they were doing. She'd made copies of each one as well for her and Theo, it would make it easier for the two of them to keep up with what was actually being completed.

Then she set about making lists for the new hires, whose paperwork she'd found tucked into the wrong folder again. Sometimes she found herself so irritated with their General Manager. He could be so scatterbrained.

It wasn't too much longer that Theo came strolling in the office door. Octavia heard the door open, but kept busy at her work, knowing it was likely him anyway. "Well well, if it isn't the one and only Tavie, beating us all to be the first to clock in." His voice sounded out, bringing a smile to her face and confirming her suspicions that the opening of the office door had indeed announced his arrival.

She waved him off, and at this point hadn't turned around to look at him, but she heard him sit in the office chair nearest her. "Pshh I'm only in it for the overtime. You know me, trying to girl-boss my way into the sun." Then, for dramatic emphasis, she spun her chair around to look at him, a wide grin planted on her face, stretching ear to ear. "It's fucking good to be back though-- missed the hell out of you."

In true Theo fashion, he seemed to brush off her affectionate dramatics, and settled for a simple smile and chuckle. A duo she'd come to know quite well from him. "How are we looking for opening day? How many newbies did we hire?"

Damn, business already? Octavia was as career-driven as she could be, and she still had her warm moments. Something was up with this guy- big time. And she was determined to find out what. Still, she felt the need to keep the mood light and airy. Something needed to counteract the glum vibes pouring off her partner in crime, and she was determined to make the day a great one for everyone. "Tsk. A month without seeing my gorgeous face every day and that's the greeting I get? You're breaking my heart, T." She gave a playful sort of shrug.

Still, she did feel the need to debrief him on the new hires like he'd asked. They still had a job to do, after all. "Looking pretty good for the open so long as everyone stays focused. Might even gone overboard on the prep lists but I'd rather be proactive than reactive. That risks putting us behind. As for new hires, I think it's two? At least, I've only found paperwork for two so far." Again, their General Manager had misfiled them in the first place, so she wasn't quite sure if there were any others lurking around. But she'd at least given it a solid look around.

Theo's sincere, but tight, smile morphed into a scowl she'd grown accustomed to. He wore it often at work. "Well, if we've only got paperwork for two new hires, then as far as i'm concerned we only have two new hires. And with new hires, it doesn't hurt to have a way in-depth prep list. You know how newbies can get."

"So long as the boss didn't file the applications wrong again, then I'm keen to agree."
Octavia always did her best not to gossip, and she felt as if not everyone needed to know her irritation with their boss. She rifled through the paperwork to hand him the new hire applications. "Florian and Raelyn are the newbies. Both servers so they're gonna need some debriefing and some solid training."

Theo took the paperwork from her with a heavy sigh, "Well it's a good thing that we've got waitresses capable of solid training. But we won't be able to pass them off for a while. There's a bunch of Orientation stuff we have to walk them through that I just don't wanna." He took a few more moments to look through the applications, he handed them back to Octavia and slumped down, leaning his head back in the chair.

Octavia raised a brow, "Jeez you look like you didn't just have a month long vacation." She poised the toes of her non-slip shoes onto the legs of his office chair and gave it a gentle push, rolling him backwards a couple inches. "You wanna talk about it before the team gets here?"

He didn't react to the movement of his chair, save for another heavy sigh. He seemed to be full of them today. "An entire month in an empty house all by myself? Not exactly what I'd call a vacation." He paused for a moment, as if he was debating whether or not he wanted to continue. He seemed to battle the decision quickly though, because the words came spilling out. "I was forced to work on this house, which is supposed to be the next step to getting Aurora back. And the entire time, I'm stuck in silence, only thinking about how I used to be able to hold my daughter in my arms while I slept." He kept his head tilted back, but it didn't effectively hid the tears that slipped down his cheeks.

A house?? He hadn't mentioned anything to her about that! Weird, considering how much they'd been there for each other before they shut down for renovations. She fought the urge to whack him a bit and reprimanding him for not keeping her updated. Instead, she remained quiet, and really listened to what he was saying. "Jesus Ted. Why didn't you call me? I could've come and livened the place up a bit, kept you from sinking into yourself at least. Those are hard feelings to be alone with." She moved his chair again, this time, looping the toes of her shoes under the legs to pull him closer, until the side of his chair bumped against her own. "But hey, as lonely as it was, you're closer to your goal now right? It sucks but you're doing it anyway and that's great." She reached out and gently took his hand in hers, attempting to offer him at least some form of comfort. "You also don't have to keep doing it alone, you know?"

Finally, Theo looked at her, but only slightly turned his head. Still, he didn't take his hand away. "I'm one step closer if I was dealing with normal people. But I'm dealing with my wife's Grandparents, who are the most spiteful people on the planet. I'm sure they'll find some way to spin it to where me having a house is a bad thing." He sat up in his chair, still not shaken by her hands clasped around his. "I'm the only one that can go through it. Nobody else deserves to be dragged down like this, so I'm not gonna."

He was hurting, and Octavia felt miserable for him. She only wished that she had some way to fix it for him. "Look, I don't have a kid, nor do I intend to have one. So I can't pretend to even understand what exactly you could be going through." She frowned. "Even though you have to go through the events alone, doesn't mean that you have to be alone with your feelings. That's what friends are for, right?"

----

Although a little shaken by her earlier conversation with Theo, Octavia was still determined to have an amazing day, so she exited the office with her chine held high, ready to greet the staff. She handed out the prep lists to each individual staff member, and in the midst of that, she set about making some coffee. No harm in getting it brewing for the staff to start helping themselves before the doors opened. Caffeine was important. Especially to her.

A new coffee in hand, this time one that was much less flavorful, her eyes landed on Ren and she approached him, intent to give him his prep list.

She did not expect, however, to walk up on him speaking to the void around him.

Her hand covered her mouth and a slow smile curled at the corners of her lips. "A sheep farmer, hm? Why the sheep, in particular?" Her bright eyes glimmered with humor as she held Ren's prep list out to him.

The March siblings all still lived together. Of course they did. They'd developed some weird fucking co-dependency after all the shit their dad pulled a few years ago.

Not that Sasha, the oldest of the three, would have even been remotely okay with Orion or Hazel moving out on their own. He'd never admit it, of course, the old grump. He always had a scowl on his face and he was usually complaining about something or other. However, to those he held close, he had the kindest heart. He looked out for his siblings. Orion loved him.

Orion especially loved that the smell of coffee and frying bacon enveloped their senses while they, unashamed, slept through the three alarms they had set. They hadn't gone to bed until late last night, hitting the town with Hazel. They knew they had work this morning, that hadn't changed their desire to go out. It didn't help that Hazel was also currently unemployed, and therefore without responsibilities.

The blasting of the alarm finally got to them. They weren't necessarily hungover, but the alcohol had definitely done a little bit of damage. Their hand came crashing down on their alarm clock, switching it off for good.

Jesus it was entirely too early to be awake. The sun hadn't even come up yet, and Orion certainly didn't feel well-rested. Crazy that Sasha got up this early all the time. He was so weird.

A quick shower helped Orion feel refreshed. Sort of. They still felt like the floor of the bathroom might be good for a nap, perhaps.

They shook their head, as if to release themselves from the clutches of the Sandman, tempting them to sleep. It only succeeded in making them a little dizzy. Unfortunately. Oh well, a cup of coffee or three would help. Maybe. A red bull too, for good measure. Later, when they got to the kitchens of course, their brother would kill them if they gave in to the sweet release of energy drinks. Sasha was a coffee or tea only type of guy, felt like energy drinks would really do some damage. He was probably right.

They rounded into the kitchen of their humble, three bedroom home. Sasha had finished his work at the stove, and had a plate ready for Orion at the table already. Bacon, eggs, toast. Coffee. Just how they liked it. Their stomach rumbled, and they knew it was time to chow down on the beautiful spread. "Dude, literally? Best brother award."

"Rude, I'm right here."
Hazel's voice sounded out, and Orion looked up to see him perched in the window, a joint hanging lazily just outside of it. Orion raised a brow, he must've still been awake from the night before. The unemployed life was wild.

"Bro did you even sleep?" Orion gawked at their brother before a whacking of something on the table caught them off guard.

Upon further inspection, it was Sasha, with the newspaper. In the kitchen like a wild game of Clue. He meant business. "Eat. Your food. You're going to be late."

Hazel, in typical middle-child fashion stepped in. "Drink some coffee too. It'll help the hangover I know you're in denial about."

Sasha waved Hazel off and shot him a pointed look while Orion rolled their eyes. "Jeez, okay moms. Godddddd." Still, they did as they were told and dug into the meal. It did, also, help their hangover that they were, in fact, in denial about.

In typical Orion fashion they had run out the door, mounted their bike, and took off-- reaching well over the speed-limit as they rode to work.

They clocked in fifteen minutes late. Octavia and Theo were going to kill them. Today was not the day to arrive late.

They slunk into the locker room, trying their best to keep under the radar and avoid getting noticed. They successfully changed into their uniform without notice, and snuck into the kitchen, grabbing a red bull on the way.

It wasn't until they were in the kitchen that they noticed everyone had prep-list assignments. Which meant that a manager somewhere had Orion's, and they were fucked. Desperately, they looked around for someone the managers might like more, someone they might go easy on. Someone that could lie and say Orion hadn't gotten one yet, and retrieve it for them.

Their eyes landed on Monica.

She was standing by the POS system, a burrito in one hand and her phone in the other. She was a good choice. Painting a charming smile on their face, they approached her. "Heyyyyyy Monica." They were tempted to ask what was so funny, but seeing as she'd been on her phone that seemed almost an invasion of privacy. Instead, they swerved for a different topic. "Month long vacation was crazy, right?" Fuck. What a lame fucking topic. This wasn't going to work at all.

* & . DIGGY
as diggy tied the apron behind his back, a familiar voice that belonged to one of his closest friends made his head instinctively turn toward the direction it came from. as expected, it was none other than theodore jones, a cherished companion and the first face he was greeted by after landing a job here and moving from home.

"hey, what's up man? how ya been?," he retorted back, happiness lingering in the tone of his voice. clapping hands with the other and going in for a brief hug, diggy pulled away before grabbing his belongings from his pockets and placing them in his locker.

the two's friendship extended outside of company walls. moving away from home was never an easy task and it only got that much harder when the busser had moved states away. despite being used to his own company, there was no one in nashville for him to turn to whenever he needed to chat. the realization only became more apparent after he couldn't just walk down the hall and automatically catch sight of his sister leisurely laying around. he couldn't bombard her with spontaneous adventures over a phone call, especially when she was so busy in college. he would never directly admit it, but the reminder triggered a sense of longing.

occasional homesickness was easier to stomach after he had moved into theodore's apartment. diggy had felt home again having another head in the house, and the timeline was highly appreciated. although not judgmental, he was glad that his roommate was theo and not someone who made him feel uncomfortable while trying to lay his head. that year had only prepared him emotionally for when the two were ready to move their separate ways.

"how are you liking the new crib? i bet it's ten times better than a cramped apartment, huh?," he asked obliviously, clearly unaware of any suppressed emotion that may have been lingering. his ignorance of theodore's emotional standing only solidified at the pearly white smile that he brandished upon his face as he spoke.

diggy's attention on his newfound company was briefly stolen by a voice announcing the burrito supply. the familiar pain in the pit of his stomach almost instinctively reminded him of his lack of breakfast before he got here. he could eat a horse if it were possible.

Zeke took a quick look around to make sure that no one who cared saw him around the kitchen door. Looked like he was in the clear, though he thought that Zahna might've seen him. He definitely doubted they'd give a shit though, so out he went.

He pushed the door open, and in an attempt to move quickly, he used a touch more force than what was necessary, really. He didn't expect the door to go careening into another person, that much was evident by his expression. His jaw dropped and his eyes bugged before he quickly launched himself out the door. If he talked to someone on his way out, that was sure to draw attention. Especially if they ended up being mad about it.

He latched the door quietly behind him, then put his full attention on his poor victim-- that honestly shouldn't have been standing that close to a damn door anyway. What was he even doing out here? Now that Zeke got a good look at him, he knew he'd never seen the guy. Another newbie? Hopefully. The alternative was that he was just some weirdo.

"Dreadfully sorry," said the guy, as if he was the one that actually had something to apologize for. "I shouldn't have been standing there for such a long time. Not the best place for an internal monologue, right?" Zeke had no fucking clue what this guy was on about, but if he was this friendly about getting hit with a door then he couldn't be so bad. He was willing to give the guy a chance. "I'm Florian, by the way," Blondie seemed to be done talking and held out his hand for a handshake.

"Er." Zeke arched a brow at his outstretched hand. "Uh, yeah man, good to meet you I guess. But you know the door thing was like? Me? Right?" Although little concerned, he still shook Florian's hand in a good natured way. "But, um hey. Let's move away from the door, yeah? Don't need to get whacked twice and all."

Zeke wasted no time stepping away and moving a little further away. His eyes caught onto a semi-familiar figure walking up to the back door. Some front of house staff probably, Zeke didn't really pay much attention to them unless they were pretty girls. He was shocked when they spoke though, and even more shocked by what they had to say. "Sheesh, dealing at 5am?" Is that really what this guy thought was happening? Fucking clueless! Couldn't blame him though, Zeke had known a handful of cooks in his life that brought their business to work. "Get help. Eat a mango."

A mango?? Zeke couldn't help himself, he snorted then guffawed loudly. "A fucking? Mango dude? Jeez. What!?" The guy was long gone, not even sparing a glance over his shoulder at Zeke and the new guy. Zeke shot a look at Florian and erupted into laughter again. "Okay-- just me or was that, like, super weird?" He shook his head thinking he was probably just being ridiculous.

He pulled the DoobTube out of his pocket and shook it, almost as an offering to the guy. "Was gonna have a little smoke before going back in. Wanna hit or two?" Zeke arched an enticing brow and plastered a friendly smirk on his face.

Well, whether the guy was going to partake or not, Zeke couldn't be out for too much longer, he was going to have to light up now or never. He slid the pre-rolled joint out of the tube, popped the end with the filter between his lips, then lit the end in one swift movement. He took a long drag off the joint, held for a moment, then exhaled with his eyes closed. It was like he could feel it coursing through his veins and wrapping it's smoky tendrils around his brain.

He pulled out his phone then, wanting to get caught up on a few messages. One from Monica caught his eye.

He looked up from his phone then, a little sheepish. He felt as if he were being rude. "Er, sorry man. You're new, right?" He took another hit from the joint.

God bless this burrito that was currently saving anyone in the restaurant from a future insufferable hangry Monica. Not having a proper breakfast would have totally kicked her ass, but now she was good to go. She was just about to take her last bite when she heard someone greet her. She glanced up from her phone and spotted Orion, an ever-so-slightly insufferable (yet very hot) line cook. Their greeting had an undertone of deceitful sweetness; they were obviously being way too nice to her for some reason. And the lame topic of conversation they brought up was clearly not what they actually wanted to talk about.

She tilted her head and raised an eyebrow before responding, clearly aware that there was an ulterior motive to the conversation; she just didn't know what it was. "Yeah, it was pretty wild. Fucking bitches, getting money. I wish I could just get paid to not work all the time." She greatly enjoyed not actually having to do anything while still getting paid; that was pretty sick. She was so glad this little vacation came during the summer too, so she wasn't in school and had no real responsibilities for a month. Monica then took the last bite of the burrito and tossed the wrapper in a nearby trashcan. "I did miss the free food, though. I'm a horrendous cook," she laughed.

Her attention was briefly captured by her phone lighting up with a notification. A response from Zeke. She quickly typed out a reply and hit send. that was the sexiest burrito i've ever had. After sending her text, she brought her focus back to Orion. "Anyways, how was your time off? And more importantly, what do you want?" she questioned. "You may be sexy as hell, but you're not that slick, babe. You need help burying a body or something?"

Delilah chose to be the one driving them in to their first day back at work. Which gave them time to cautiously apply their mascara in the sun visors mirror. Flashing their sister a wordless stare meaning "Drive as carefully as you can or I will push you out of the moving car." They put more time in their appearance today as the had impulsively shaved their head last night while watching Kakegurui. It looked fine but after having their braids for a while they felt a little naked. They finished up their eyes as Lilah pulled into the parking lot of Buttered Biscuits

"Hey Kat, are you gonna stick in the car for a bit?" Their sister asked them after she step out the car. Kat nodded not wanting to deal with the overly warm welcoming back to the family speech. "Okay just lock up the car when your done." Delilah said tossing the keys to them. Kat swiftly caught them before the nailed them in the face sliding the keys into their tote bag. Turning on the cars Bluetooth, Kat blasted some Remi Wolf before swiping to check out who had just texted them.

1693159594447.png

Kat saw that Zeke had sent them a text. She hadn't talked to him in bit, but Kat had gotten busy taken care of her dad and he was well aware of that. Smiling at her phone she quickly responded offering to hang out after they clocked out. Kat was in need of being able to let go with some friends, get some drinks, and quite honestly needed a fuck. Setting her phone down on the console her eyes drifted to a bottle of water and realized just how parched she was. Gabbing the bottle and taking a quick swig her eyes widened as the hot liquid burned her throat as she swallowed. "FUCK" well aware that it was filled with vodka, straight warm vodka that was god knows how old. Laughing to herself with a sigh "Of course first day back why not start of like that." Snatching her phone she sent a another text to Zeke

1693159605209.png
Getting out the car Kat doubled checked they had everything the needed before locking up the car and heading in for the day. Walking into the Restaurant a little more self conscious due to rocking a new hair cut, and accidentally un-sober. Shoving their shit in their locker before walking over to the bar station to do her prep work. Spotting Phil starting to do their job for them. "AHT AHT PHIL!" They shouted to Phil walking to up the bar smacking their hands on the hard wood. "Put that shit down and let me do my job" They said with a chucking ducking under the bar to gently shove her out of the way. "Thank you though." They said while snatching the rag from Phil before starting to cleaning their own station.

Kat then turned her attention to other person there she had accidentally ignored while trying to stop Phil from cleaning the whole Restaurant. "Hey Zahna, having a good start to your day?" She asked while spraying the counter with some cleaning solution.

Florian breathed a sigh of relief. Zeke wasn't blaming him for the little awkward door exchange. He followed his lead away from the door, hoping to avoid any more mishaps.

Hearing the steps of another, he half turned, wanting to catch a glimpse of who he assumed would be another of his new coworkers. He appeared tall and broody, like a Sour Patch Kid missing all the sweet and colourful parts.

His off the wall comment made Flo's eyebrows rise, before a genuine, though shocked, burst of laughter tumbled out of his mouth. The commentor had not stuck around to gauge their reactions, but Zeke was laughing as well, so Flo figured he wasn't the only one to find the interaction bizarre. "Okay-- just me or was that, like, super weird?" his companion asked.

"Definitely strange," Flo acquiesced. "Not exactly how I pictured the start of my morning."

Zeke verbalised his intentions to go for a smoke, and extended an invitation to Florian as well. "Hey, thanks for the offer, man, but I should probably be heading inside pretty soon. Wouldn't want to be late for my first shift and all," he replied.

He watched as Zeke took his phone out of his pocket, smiling slightly at whatever he saw on screen. Flo shifted from foot to foot, unsure if their conversation was over and this was Zeke's way of dismissing him.

He was just about to turn and once again try to enter the building, when Zeke's voice startled him from his train of thought. "Er, sorry man. You're new, right?"

"Yeah, just got hired a few weeks ago," he answered. "The resemblance to an excited puppy kind of gave me away, didn't it?" Flo figured that the wide-eyed newbie vibes he was feeling inside must show on his face as well.

He should probably head inside. It wouldn't do to give off the wrong impression by being tardy on his first day. "It was great to get to meet you, Zeke, but I should get inside and suited up." He tilted his head towards the door. "Maybe find a mango or two," he added with a smirk.

Zeke hadn't even considered that being on his phone when talking to someone was rude, nor had he even considered he might be holding the poor guy up on his first day. That would be a super shitty sort of first day, huh? Getting yelled at for being late because some lame line cook held you up. But as Zeke finally looked up from his phone, both the realization and the weed hit his brain all at once.

He'd looked up just in time to see Florian's awkward sort of shuffle towards the door before he turned back around. Zeke couldn't hep the awkward nose-wrinkle that morphed on his face, he only hoped that Florian wasn't offended by it. His inward cringing had gone a lot more outward in appearance than he'd wanted it to. Jesus. Time for another hit to swallow up the awkward feeling he had in his gut.

The smoke mixed with his odd sort of guilt, and he exhaled it, relaxing his shoulders as he did so. Now he felt much better about it. Past him had been unreasonable, and now present, high him was wiser. Everything was chill.

He felt his phone buzz in his hand and fought the urge to look down at it, giving Florian his attention because he knew the poor guy was itching to head inside.

"Yeah, just got hired a few weeks ago," Guy hadn't even gotten to work in the restaurant while it was open. "The resemblance to an excited puppy kind of gave me away, didn't it?"

Zeke laughed in response, slipping his hand that held his phone into his pocket. "You do have a joyful look that most veterans around here haven't worn in years-- so I'd say yeah, that was a dead giveaway dude." He found himself maybe looking a little too long Florian's way, appreciating his sweet smile and wispy hair. And he had some pretty nice eyes too, he couldn't lie. "Keep that energy though, it's working for you."

That had come out a little more flirtatious than he'd intended, and he risked a quick glance around to make sure no one had overheard him. There were some people around here that would never let that moment go. He rubbed his thumb anxiously along the rubber phone case he held in his hand, still hidden in his pocket.

"It was great to get to meet you, Zeke, but I should get inside and suited up." Right again. Zeke really kept holding the poor guy up. "Maybe find a mango or two," Florian followed up his words with a smirk that was to die for. It left Zeke almost too stunned to laugh, though he managed to cough out a weak chuckle or two as Florian headed inside.

His cheeks felt hot as he called out a mumbled, "Nice to meet you too!" He quickly followed up his words with a nice long hit off his joint, then put it out and slid it back into the DoobTube in his pocket.

His hands once again found his phone, and he pulled it out to read Monica's response and found himself laughing.

He couldn't help but smirk after he sent his message, hoping she'd like the attempt at humor. Sometimes it could be hit or miss, but he really liked hanging around Monica. He didn't want to scare her off.

He backed out of his messages with Monica, and realized he had a series of texts that he'd missed from Katrina, and from the initial glimpse he caught, he knew this was going to be good!

He pulled up his messages with Kat, and found himself laughing even harder than he had with Monica's message. God he fucking loved them. They always brought the right energy.

He stopped scrolling for a second when he heard the kitchen door open, and tucked himself slightly out of sight so that he wouldn't be caught slacking off. He'd be right inside as soon as he finished catching up on his messages. Besides, clearly what Kat had sent him was going to be far more interesting.

He finished typing his response to her and decided it was time for him to head back inside. Ready to face the rest of his shift, he ducked back in through the kitchen and towards the locker room to slide the DoobTube back in his backpack.

Orion could have sworn they'd heard the heaviest sigh from Monica, but that could honestly just be them projecting. They watched as Monica arched her brow and tilted her head to the side-- a quirky little motion that Orion couldn't help but find adorable. Not that they'd ever really admit that.

"Yeah, it was pretty wild. Fucking bitches, getting money. I wish I could just get paid to not work all the time." Orion felt that, and showed their support with a soft, casual sort of chuckle. They slid their hands in the pockets of their chef pants and leaned against the service station next to her, their chin tilted slightly down as they peered at her curiously.

Their gaze slid away from her, only for a moment, as they watched her ball up the trash from her burrito and toss it onto the trashcan. They watched it as it landed perfectly inside the bin, then their eyes darted right back to her.

They had a habit of doing that. Their brothers had made comments all the time that their stare could be a little too intense. Orion just liked to read people's expressions. They gave a lot away with the nuanced twitching that happened whenever they lied, when they felt something. Orion thought of it as a form of telling the future, or perhaps mind reading. Less escaped them that way.

Perhaps that was just paranoia.

Oh well.

"I did miss the free food, though. I'm a horrendous cook," Monica laughed as she said it, and Orion caught a glimpse of her pretty smile. For a moment, their breath seemed to catch in their lungs. They shook themselves out of it. Monica was hot, but she could be annoying as fuck. They needed to remember that.

"Horrendous huh? I'll give you some pointers sometime. No use killing your future partner, right?" They teased a little, shoving Monica with their shoulder playfully. "We talking can't fry an egg bad, or like, burn microwave ramen bad?" Thank fuck their confidence had returned to them. Whatever awkward social slip-up they'd suffered before clearly wasn't around to stay. At least now they could have a decent conversation with Monica and not walk away thoroughly embarrassed.

Monica's phone buzzed, and she whipped it out, her attention solely on that for a moment. Unrealistically, and for no good reason at all, Orion felt a pang of jealousy, and rolled their eyes. They wrote it off as them hating being ignored. They weren't willing to siphon through those feelings any further. Taking a risk, they shot a glance down at her phone, curious to see who she was texting.

Orion rolled their eyes again. Zeke. Yeah that checked out. Zeke had a way with the girls, Orion had to admit. They almost envied him for it.

Almost.

They looked away quickly, not wanting Monica to notice that they'd stolen a peek at her phone, and whistled ironically. Secretly, they hoped it would catch her attention and make her feel at least a little guilty that she'd pulled out her phone mid-conversation.

It wasn't all that long before Monica's attention did return to them, and once it did, Orion felt incredibly ridiculous for being even remotely upset about it all.

"You may be sexy as hell, but you're not that slick, babe. You need help burying a body or something?" At first, her calling them sexy was the only thing that pinged around in their brain, and they only just managed to fight off the biggest smirk ever in response to it. Instead they settled for a semi-amused chuckle. And the tiniest of grins because they couldn't help it.

"Yeah yeahhhh, you're right. I came at it all wrong. Got off my game a bit." They shrugged a bit sheepishly. "Not quite a body-- though if that's on the table lemme get back to you in like a week. I might have some ideas." They chuckled, a bit of their goofy side showing again as they relaxed into the conversation.

"So. definitely got here really fucking late and uh- suuuuuuper not in the mood to deal with Octavia or Theo and ask for my prep list." They cleared their throat and looked around, almost for dramatic effect. "So I was hoping you could like? Lie for me maybe? Tell them I've been here and that I've been looking everywhere for my prep list?" They put an awkward sort of smile on their face, that honestly looked sort of pitiful, which was the goal. "Honestly, you'd be saving my life."

He should’ve known better than to loiter in thought, for the presence of a shift manager would usually have him scuttling the opposite direction. Alas he is elsewhere, lost in consuming idealism of a cottage home to not notice their approach.

A sheep farmer? Ren’s look over is delayed, acknowledging them like an afterthought, and it is one of God’s small mercies this wretched morning to be met with someone who would entertain his conviction.

“Cows too?” He considers it. “I do like their eyelashes.”

But Ren was naive, and this tapestry of wool she’d pulled over his eyes proved only a ruse to ensnare him into chores.

Ren’s eyes snapped to the offering. Instant to stop it with a single finger against Octavia’s hand. The halt hovering a lapse of awkward stalemate, a sheepish smile, refusing to allow the prep list move an inch closer. He’d be willing to stand here in the imperial glory of the restaurant till reduced to ash and bone if it meant avoiding those vile responsibilities.

“Aha.” He stares at her, unmoving and coiled with tension. “Almost thought you wanted to give that to me.”

Slowly, intentionally, Ren nudged the hand and paper back towards Octavia with a single, petulant finger.

“But no autographs, Tavvy.” It is his signature waltz, being painfully droll, this give and take of wry camaraderie. Stuffing hands into his jacket pockets before she can get any ideas of forcing the paper into his grip. “Can’t be seen playing favourites, my work wives will be mad.”

It is a concerted effort to speak about anything but the prep list, and Ren isn’t quite finished with his spur of stupid deflection. Arrived not even 5 minutes ago, and already trying to efface the sandy guidelines of authority with seawave and whimsy.

“But hey.” A loyal crux, this play that he relies on like the vertebrae of a spine. He’d played the card countless times when pinned in a rut with no other option but manchild diversion. He smiles, rolls back and forth on the heel of his shoes. “You single?”

a cracked window from the night before would allow for the breeze to be her alarm clock. the sudden gust caused the curtain to shift and flash her right in the eyes with the sun's morning rays. piper didn't appreciate the rude awakening, a low groan audible in her throat as she shifted underneath the covers and slowly rose to a seated position atop her mattress: but, she was surprised to feel the lack of exhaustion within her body.

had she finally done it? achieving a decent amount of sleep ever since she moved back to nashville seemed to be impossible. mornings here were much quieter compared to the bustling city of brooklyn, and having lived there for over a year seemed to keep her accustomed to the noise.

piper couldn't help but let a soft smile creep up against her lips as she untangled her legs from within the covers and walked towards the bathroom. her couple of weeks back were off to a pretty decent start, and her morning shift at buttered biscuits didn't sound so bad anymore. wait.

"fuck!" she hollered to herself, her leisurely demeanor sharpening into a hustle. slapping the sink faucet handle to the side, piper hurriedly squeezed a glob of toothpaste on her toothbrush and scrubbed at her teeth. the faint taste of blood in her mouth alerted her to slow down despite being in a race against time now.

after she had finished brushing her teeth, the annoyed busser slipped into her clothes in a hasty manner and stuck a claw-clip in her hair to secure her locs behind her. so much for a smoke before work, she thought to herself before snatching doobtube off her dresser anyway. if piper couldn't smoke now, she would make it a mission to smoke later.

* * *
her ancient relic of a '69, cherry red ford torino had done more favors for piper than it owed. having been driven by the hands of her father since his teens, it was a miracle on wheels with the help of tender love and care to get her to work at the knick of time. still arriving much later than she would have liked, piper begrudgingly locked the car after she got out and slammed it shut behind her before walking inside of the restaurant.

the smell of cleaning products and air fresheners punched her nose after she had walked in. the crew, new and returning, were at their respective stations as piper gave them each a quick nod before making her way towards the 'staff-only' area of the joint.

in some way, the sight of them had calmed her nerves almost as successfully as her blunt would have. and even though the feeling of ease wouldn't last long, a twinge of gratitude resided in her mind as she drifted towards a locker that looked to be vacant of employee reservation.

but just before grabbing the apron that was hanging neatly against the surface, a distinct smell of food drew her attention.

she hadn't gotten the chance to eat before she left the crib, barely having the chance to get dressed and clock in on time, so the smell of bacon signaled a pain within her stomach. piper needed to eat before doing anything else, especially before it was time to let the customers loose within the building.

walking a few more feet forward, her nose didn't fail to lead the way correctly. stacked neatly against the table laid burritos wrapped in foil, salsa residing nearby for the taking. and she didn't hesitate to do just that.

as quick as she grabbed one, the tinfoil that was neatly wrapped seemed to unravel at the speed of light within her hands. not before biting into it, piper poured a good serving of the salsa on top of it as she walked back to the locker she had laid eyes on earlier. but as she turned the corner, she found herself face-to-face with someone else.

"shit, i'm sorry," piper apologized instinctively, covering her mouth with the palm of her hand until she was done eating to speak again.

"i just went to grab a bite and didn't even think it already belonged to someone. i mean- it looked new but-," a chuckle escaped from her lips as she realized she was beginning to ramble on.

"let me just stop. is it yours?" she asked the guy who stood before her, briefly taking note of what he looked like. blonde hair, blue eyes, and warm smile before they nearly scared the shit out of each other: he was the typical all-american dream guy. something like prince charming fresh out of a fairytale.

almost instantaneously did it make her relax despite being put in an awkward situation on her first day. it was obvious that he saw her greedily devouring a breakfast staple and still, she didn't feel judged in the slightest. perhaps, buttered biscuits wouldn't be so bad if the others were anything like this one.

Although his interaction with Zeke had started off rather awkwardly, Florian hoped he had managed to at least pull off the ending with a bit of grace. He left Zeke to his phone conversations, heading inside to find the locker room. The owners had given him an unofficial tour after he had been hired, but that had been a while ago and the layout of the restaurant had already faded in his mind. He hoped he could still find his way around the place.

He managed to find the lockers without too much trouble, and discovered another employee getting ready for the day by ravenously devouring what appeared to be a breakfast burrito. He was just about to raise his hand in a wave when an apology tumbled out of her. Florian squinted slightly in confusion. What was she apologising for again?

He couldn't help but smile at the veritable waterfall of words that poured out of her mouth. He was a little lost after her ramble, but he thought he got the gist of what she was trying to say. She wondered if the burrito had been his.

"No, you're all good," he replied, waving his hand in dismissal of her apology. "I've never seen that burrito before in my life. It does look delicious, though. I may have to pilfer one for myself." He snatched one labelled as potato and egg. As he unwrapped it, he continued the conversation. "Well, my burrito thieving accomplice, perhaps we should learn each other's names in the event of any future escapades. The name's Vries, Florian Vries," he said, reminiscent of the famous spy himself. He shot her a quick smile before taking a bite of his second breakfast.

Monica leaned back and reflected on her kitchen nightmares with a small laugh. "Let's just say I can heat up some microwave ramen, but the one time I tried to fry an egg, it came out... rubbery? Doesn't matter now though, I'd much rather eat anything you've made." As she made eye contact, she found Orion gazing at her intensely, so she batted her eyes rather cheesily, overexaggerating her flirtation in a comedic manner. Holy shit, their eyes were beautiful. Maybe she focused on their eyes for a second longer than she should have, but she couldn't help it; they were stunning.

While on her phone, she noticed how Orion pointedly whistled at her. Regaining focus on the person in front of her, she felt a bit guilty, like maybe she shouldn't be flirting with Zeke on her phone while Orion was right in front of her. An unfamiliar feeling to her, Monica Panchal did not feel guilty over who she did and didn't give her attention to, and she'd like to keep it that way. She wasn't sure what made her feel like she should be providing Orion with her undivided attention, but she tried to push that feeling away. Who was Orion to make her feel like she was obligated to do anything?

"Awww, are you gonna get in trouble?" She asked after hearing their request, taking on a mocking tone and pouting a bit, then dropping the sarcastic tone and smirking in a friendly manner. She was only giving them a hard time, after all. "Yeah, I guess I can help you. But... I have to get something out of it. Hmmmm, let's think." She cocked her head to the side once more, pursing her lips as she pondered. "How about you make me food for the next month—two meals a day? Since I am so hopeless at cooking, after all, we can help each other out."

A moment after making her counteroffer to Orion's favor, her phone lit up in her hand, and instinctively, Monica checked it. Another text from Zeke. She read it and giggled. Glancing at Orion, she felt guilty again and decided to include them in her shenanigans, even though it was a small detour from their goal of getting their prep list. Oh well, what is work if not getting paid to waste time? "Zeke is kind of an idiot, huh? Like a sexy idiot, though. What do you think?" She raised an eyebrow and openly showed them her phone, awaiting a reaction. She could swear she felt her breath hitch for a second, paying attention to any move that Orion's face made, genuinely wanting to know how they felt about her flirtations. God, why did she care so much? Forming a quick response, she typed out two words: ok, bet, and hit send, ready to get back to the issue at hand.

"Anyways, distractions aside, what do you say? I help you, you help me, alliance of the century, babe."

Her perfectly manicured hand fluttered away from her mouth where she'd been hiding her perfect lips, exposing a perfect smile. Instead, she placed her hand at her hip, and studied Ren with a grin. Her other hand still adamantly held out his prep-list, still optimistic that she'd caught him off guard for him to take it.

"Cows too, hm?" She echoed him almost immediately, her grin twitching and stretching a little bit at his little comment about their eyelashes. Even serious-at-work Octavia had to admit that cow eyelashes did slay.

She only just barely managed to keep an excited squeal from escaping her as Ren reached his hand out towards the prep list. Had she actually managed to get this done without a hitch? She really didn't have it in her to try and sneak it to him all day, now was her chance!!

Her heart fell as one of his fingers placed itself against her hand. Her hand froze, and it seemed her breath had too. This was easily in the top ten most awkward moments between her and an employee. How was she supposed to move on from here? Pushing towards him seemed much too aggressive, and at this point he'd had his finger on her long enough to feel almost intimate.

She found herself staring at where his finger had landed for a little too long- a little too caught off guard.

His voice broke the whirlwind of thoughts in her mind like shattered glass, and Octavia's gaze snapped back up to his face immediately. As he spoke, he pushed her hand, along with the prep list, back towards her.

"Ren-- I don't." He shoved his hands into his pockets before she had the chance to protest any further. Any former feeling of awkwardness that Octavia had felt seemed to melt away-- it was replaced with stark annoyance. "I don't give a shit about autographs or your work wives, and you and I both know this. Please dude, first day back and you're already avoiding the prep list?" Her voice was stern, and yet it seemed almost pleading. Octavia couldn't help but take pride in her work, she'd be pissed if today didn't go smoothly after all the effort she'd already put in before they were even open.

Her own words seemed to bulldoze over some of his own, and it took a moment for them to catch up to Octavia. Had he really? Just asked? If she was single?

"Sorry-- did you--" She shook her head, that question was pointless. "Maybe you can find out if I'm single or not after you finish the morning prep work."

Octavia was matter-of-fact about it, yet she couldn't hide a slight flirtatious tone. As aggravating as Ren could be as an employee, she had to admit he was lovely to look at. And even more lovely to flirt with-- but those actions needed to be reserve for outside-of-work interactions, and they would have to wait. Mostly. Okay, she couldn't deny herself a little bit of fun. Just as a treat. "Lord knows you'll look good doing it." She risked a sly little glance down at his lips, then back up to his eyes and paired it with a cute little smirk.

Then, she took a small step towards him, and offered out the prep list once more.

Then, a movement somewhere behind Ren caught her eye, and her gaze flickered up to see what it could be. Her heart stopped and sank right to the floor.

She'd been right to assume that their General Manager had misfiled some hiring paperwork somewhere, otherwise Octavia wouldn't have been caught so off-guard by what she saw.

Her hand that held the prep list sank down by her side, and her demeanor visibly changed. Gone was the slightly flirty girlboss, and in her place was someone much different than what her staff was used to seeing. She seemed sad, and a little bit something else to. Something even she couldn't describe.

"There's no fucking way." She said it aloud, but she was talking to no one in particular, even though Ren was still nearby.

Fucking. Piper?! What the hell was she doing here?
