The Cylons were created by man
They rebelled starting a twelve year war between them and the humans of The Twelve Colonies. After the human victory the Cylons disappeared.
For the next forty life went on as usual humanity became more advanced.
But so have the Cylons. In one swift movement the Cylons brought the Twelve Colonies to their knees destroying the colonies and nearly all of humanity with no resistance
The Battlestar Atlantis being in space dock at the time was able to escape. It's Comander Laris was able to rescue Twelve ships. Believing they were what remained Laris made the call to jump away from the Colonies.
Now fifty thousand survivors search for a place to call home. All the while being attacked by the Cylons and other races.
