For countless generations, the Avatar was able to control the four elements of nature, and serve as the bridge between the Physical and Spirit Worlds. But there was once an Avatar who once went into the spirit world, an evil spirit escapes to the physical world and possess their body. With the Avatar's power, the spirit caused a river of destruction. Knowing there was no other way to save everyone, the Avatar is forced to destroy their body in order to stop the spirit.

To avoid another possible catastrophic event occuring in history once again, a new organization was fomed that practiced spirit fusion, being able to absorb them, and not only survive it, but enhance their own bending to greater heights. This order was meant to stop the Avatar if they were ever to step out of line. But when there seemed to be signs of corruption within th cult, they were forced to disband, with their studies and findings burned to ashes. But did they also burn the seeds. However, they did not burn the seeds, and the order, now known as the Fusion Cult, remained in secret. The seeds of corruption sprouted into the great tree of evil that was threatening the balance of the worlds. Now, only one person can restore the balance of the world, the one who can bend all four elements.....The Avatar

Nothern Water Tribe.

"Absolutely unacceptable! We cannot just throw our customs away. We have to remember our traditions!"
"I do believe we had a discussion like this before, as we all saw this as a great possibility and it was bound to happen sooner or later!"
"We can't be this selfish, this concerns the whole world and not just this tribe!"
"So what, she should have known better than to be reborn here then!"
"She's the AVATAR!"
"And she's A FEMALE!"

The whole council of the Northern Water Tribe was up in flames, with the Chief of the tribe sitting in the middle of it. What was the comotion about? The Avatar was just recently been discovered among the Tribe. But there was an issue. The Avatar had not even mastered their own element of water, and needed proper training. This wouldn't be a problem except for a few details: The law says that females of the tribe were not allowed to learn martial water bending, and it happens that the Avatar was just that: A female. So naturally, the council was going at each others throats over it. Some of the more stubborn ones insisted to stick to their traditions, and others didn't see why they couldn't just make an exception for the Avatar, since she's....welll....the Avatar. The whole thing was not really getting anywhere for a while.

However, after seemingly an hour of debating, the Chief finally spoke. "Guards, find the Yura and bring her to me, I have made my decision on what shall be done." Two guards left to go among the tribespeople to escort the Avatar, while the councilmen looked at each other wondering what decision he came to and which side he agreed with. It seemed as if they would find out shortly.....

Ba Sing Se, Earth Kingdom

In a dark quiet room, a large figure entered through the door to see another soldier sitting at a table. Shogen, a soldier in Ba Sing Se's military, was meeting with his father who was a general in the army. Shogen sat down wondering what exactly he was needing to speak to him about, even though he had a general idea of what the subject was.

"Anything to report sir?" Shogen said to his father, attempting to address him profesionally.
"Yes we found something," his father said. "It is as we suspected. It seems that traces of that cultic clan from the time of Avatar Shar still seems to exist."

"I see," Shogen said. "So why don't we just take then down now?"
"You can't fight an enemy when you don't know who your enemy is," his father said. "We don't know how far of an influence this cult has, and we don't know if it just exists within the Earth Kingdom...it could very well reach all the way down to the Southern Tribe for all we know."
Shogen nodded in acknowledgement. "So what do we have to do?"
"We need to know more about this cult, and see if the legends about them really hold as much water as they say. We have been made aware that one of our generals had been absent from duty on several occasions, so we believe that he may have some connections to this."

"So you want me to find something about this man?" Shogen questioned.
"Not exactly," the general stated. "I want you to find someone who can. If there is a secret organization and they discover the military is on to them, we don't know what the outcome would be. But if say, a random thief or assassin came in on their own accord, it would be left at that."

"You want me to hire a spy?"

"Close, son, you see, if we are in need of it, the target may have to be eliminated..."
Shogen raised his eyebrow in skepticism. "Does the king even approve of this?" He asked.
"He is the one who told me to carry this plan out when I secretly gave him the reports," his father said.
"I see...so what you want me to do is to find an assassin, tell them to spy on this guy, see what he is up to, and if neccissary, eliminate him."
"You understand correctly son. I do believe you need no further instruction?"
"Yes sir," Shogen nodded.
"Good then.."

Earth Kingdom Town
Looks like a good place to search. Shogen thought. Wearing more normal low class clothes rather than his usual military uniform, Shogen went out into a town some where outside the city of Ba Sing Se.

He needed to find someone willing to do this sort of dirty work, so Shogen spent the whole day there hanging around various areas in the town, and trying to eavsdrop on conversations, or star them up himself to see if he could learn anything. He certainly was not just going to ask some random person "Do you know where I could find an assassin" and expect it to not come back and bite him. But after some searching, Shogen managed to hear word of one woman who did assassin work. She seemed to have a decent reputation for her work, and seems to do it well. Her name was Nilak.

After more questioning, Shogen learned that she might be in the bar at the tavern in the town. When he went there, It seemed a bit cheap and run down when he went inside, and was filled with rouges and thugs. He certainly was not expecting anything upper-ring material, but he thought the place was a bit unsanitary. He didn't think to express this thought outwardly however, as he did not want to act like a pampered princess. He was a soldier in Ba Sing Se's army after all. And he had to find someone. He walked around, with his eyes carefully scanning the shady characters that here inside. Finally, he saw what seemed to be a young woman who wore clothes hailing from one of the water tribes. This was her? She didn't seem like she belonged with these thugs, if anything she seemed like she should be a slave girl or something. Still, logic told him that this was the woman he was looking for, so pressing down his doubts, he calmly walks up to what he hoped was the waterbender.

"Your name wouldn't happen to Nilak, would it?"

"I bet your rich Daddy has you on a very special mission, hm pretty boy?", Nilak said plainly, not even turning to face Shogen as he approached her from behind. A burly man sitting a few stools over near Nilak eyed Shogen over, a woman with an eyepatch behind the bar Nilak sat at stared him down, her deadly axes attached to her back still very visible, even in the dull light. It was obvious the water bender had a reputation at this place, that one slip up of a newcomer was dangerous.

"My friends and I know you've been stalking around this town today. You obviously aren't from here, you obviously want work done that involves keeping your neck out of it," she continued, turning to face him. The woman behind the bar chuckled, shaking her head in disbelief at Shogen.

Nilak eyed him up and down quickly. He saw his meals regularly, his muscular, made-for-work frame healthy. Broad, strong, and clean. He carried himself well, his eyes intelligent. He was probably in the military.

She propped her slender frame against the bar and smiled dryly, obviously without any niceties behind it."Tell me what you want with my services and choose your words carefully. Remember, I'm not your bait, I'm not your bodyguard-solider boy," she warned, staring up at the broad earth bender.

Yura was sulking in her families dwelling, nerves running through her. She had no idea what was about to happen. Has there never been a female Avatar in the tribe? She asked, bringing her legs up to her chin. Would they banish me? Or refuse to train me? Thoughts like this spiraled in the teens mind. Her mother Aguta, most likely sending her turmoil, placed a cool hand on Yura's back, rubbing slowly in an attempt to calm her.

"I'm sure the council will make the best decision," Aguta said, trying to calm down her daughter. Everything happened so quickly. Once it was revealed that Yura was the Avatar, the council went into meeting immediately and haven't been seen for hours. This time only fueled Yura's nerves. When her bending showed itself, she was so unsure of everything. Her father tried to teach her from what little he knew, but Yura wasn't a fighter. Healing was the only thing that really came natural to her. She loved working with her mother to heal and help people.

Two guards entered the dwelling, causing Yura to be ripped from her thoughts. She knew what this meant: the council had made a decision. She got up, squeezing her mothers hand before letting go. She followed the guards silently as they led her to the council. Upon entering the large room, Yura bowed her head respectfully and kneeled before the chief.

So he was not quite as discreet as he hoped. No matter, it is not like word of his whereabouts were going to leak outside the town....hopefully. He noticed he was getting looks from other people in the tavern, and was ready to send earth piercing through the floor if needed, but he was sure that it wouldn't be necessary, as long as he didn't say the wrong thing.

Clearly the woman had done this sort of thing before, which was a good sign he came to the right person. "Well that saves me some breath. Alright, I will let you in on it," he said, then he looked around at the others who were there. "I would prefer if we spoke somewhere more quiet, unless you are more comfortable here."

The guards returned to the chief, along with the woman who was meant to be the Avatar. The councilmen looked both at Yura and the Chief, wondering what he planned to do with her.

"Yura," the chief began. "Not long ago you were discovered to be the next Avatar, the one who would succeed Avatar Asheh of the Air Nomads. But as you know, the men of the council has been split on how you should be dealt with. One half of the council chooses to stay rooted into our past tradition of not allowing women to learn combat bending. The rest believes that an exception should be made for you, seeing as you are the Avatar. As such, I have given it some thought, and now I have come to a decision."

The councilmen stood still and quiet, wondering which side the chief was going to choose.
,"The Avatar will be trained in martial waterbender." The chief said. The council immediately went into an uproar, both of approval and disapproval, but then the chief held his hand to silence them. "But," he began. "She will not learn it here. I decree that Yura shall be sent away to the Southern Water tribe, and she shall remain there until her training in waterbending is completed. That is my final decision. Yura, you may begin your preparations for your departure. You will leave at sundown."

Nilak rolled her eyes as Shogen said he would "let her in on it". As if she was being privileged by him. She narrowed her eyes at him, both in irritation but also in personal thought.

This mission would get her no closer to information on her father. However, this well-off earth bender clearly had a high profile case on his hands if he was incapable to do anything about it. She could tell he was a proficient bender, he usually wouldn't need help. It peaked her interest.

"Upstairs to my lodging," she said, getting out of her stool and leading her way through the bar. Things were getting rowdy as the night set in, her fellow undesirables trickling into the bar. Thieves, prositutes, bandits, mercenaries. They began to fill the tables, some drinking and shouting, others deep in conversation about who knows what. But as Nilak walked through the chaos, a path was cleared for her. Even among the thieves, the slender water bender was respected.

Up the stairs she went into a room, down and to the left of the narrow upstairs hallway. Opening the door, she moved to sit on her bed, lined with water tribe furs. She motioned for Shogen to sit at her desk.

"Speak, earth bender," she said, leaning back against the wall as Shogen took his seat.

"To begin," Shogen said making sure that he recalled what the general had told him. "I'm a soldier in Ba Sing Se's military. The thing is that our forces believe there is a secret order that we thought we and the other nations had shut down. We are suspecting that one of our own men is associated with the order, as he has been mysteriously absent from duty on numerous occasions throughout the year. The reason we have not investigated ourselves is because we do not want the order, if it we are correct about its existence, to realize we are on to them. Which is why I have been sent to find a third party to deal with him for us"."

MuskyMuscovado MuskyMuscovado

Nilak raised her eyebrow as he talked. The soldiers were smarter than she thought, thinking a plan through like this.

"This...man and his order", she said, leaning forward in curiosity,"tell me about them. I need to know what I'm putting my neck out for," she asked, putting up her finger up as she thought, then adding, "by the way, you know much about me and what I do now. I suggest if you want to make it out of this bar alive, my whereabouts and my line of work will remain silenced. I don't want your friends coming and busting down my door after you get what you want," she said. Her steel grey eyes hardened on Shogen, meaning every word she said was to be taken very seriously.

This was more than just killing off a bandit or a corrupt leader. This was something much bigger than she anticipated.

Shogen was a bit surprised at the threat he received from Nilak, but he still retained a stoic expression. "Nothing of you would be heard outside this building after this, you have my word." He wasn't really used to going this low to hire an assassin, but as long as the king authorized it, he would be fine. After pausing for a few seconds, he went on to answer her first request. "As for the order, you are probably familiar with the story of Avatar Zoddon, the first 'Dark Avatar'," Shogen started. Zoddon was known for being possessed by an evil spirit that took over his body and caused great mayhem, forcing Zoddon to sacrifice himself to stop him.
"After his sacrifice, the four nations decided to construct an organization of special benders who had an unnatural ability to fuse themselves with the spirits without 'losing themselves' so to speak. They're purpose was to fight against the Avatar if another catastrophic event was to occur. However, it was later discovered they were performing some rather shady activities. What they were, I am not too sure, but they were offensive enough to have the organization disbanded, and all records of their practices and studies were gathered and burned. The whole order was kept as a relative secret, so their existence was not common knowledge. But a lot of our spiritual leaders have been sensing a lot of interaction with the spirit world, far more than usual, leading us to believe that this order this is trying to rise from its ashes,"

The docks of the Earth Kingdom was practically a market place at the moment. Goods were just about to be shipped to and from the area. Merchants were selling there things to either other merchants, or people who happened to be passing by.

It was then a Fire Nation tradeship arrived, stopping at the edge of the port with the Nation's insignia proudly raised on top of the sail. The ship was opened and the guards and servants almost immediately began unloading the ship.

Even someone who wasn't as easily impressed as Nilak, dealing with the assassination of a member from an organization that directly and negatively impacts the Avatar was a monumental feat.

Running her hands through her long hair, she sighed."This man you're investigating is too important for me just to find and murder. You want espionage...espionage from someone who can handle a cultist if need be," she realized, smirking.

"I'm so very flattered you'd like to put what seems to be the next Avatar's life in my hands...an Avatar, who my sources tell me, is but a young girl from my tribe," she added.

Chuckling and shaking her head in disbelief, Nilak looked down, thinking. She remembered back during her merchant days, her father telling her stories from the great Avatars of the past. They protected the world, keeping the careful balance of this world and the spirit world. Even brooding Nilak could see that this case was far more important than herself and even Shogen. She bit her lip, coming to a blunt realization. Her father clearly respected and revered the Avatars and would want her to assist them if she could. She was getting no where with leads on her father. This was her shot to do something worthwhile...in his honor.

Making her decision, she met eyes with Shogen."When I spy, get information from, and possibly murder this target in question, and I find that his organization is, indeed, making a comeback, I have a proposition. I'm willing to come into your company as your personal rogue. I'll do your spying, extortion, and killing. I recognize the severity of this problem and your need for more than Earth Kingdom military might. I'm your ticket into that."

The sun was high in the sky, and small beads of sweat trickled down Kazu's face and neck. The air was dense, heavy in his lungs. His eyes were red and moist from the sandy streets and sea air. His hair was greasy and tangled. People looking at him would assume he'd lived a rough life.
Together with his temporary colleagues, he watched the huge trading ship adorned with Fire Nation flags settle into the bustling port.

His stomach growled, quietly, and Kazu closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. The intoxicating smells of street food made his mouth water. Dumplings. Noodles. Tofu. Fried lobsters. Cabbage cakes.

Stop it! Focus.
Money had been tight lately. But if only he could make it through today, he could have his paycheck. More importantly, food.

The life he lived now was very different from his life two decades past. But he'd chosen this.

His boss clapped his hands loudly, and Kazu was jolted out of his sentimental thoughts. It was time to unload the ship.
Kazu rubbed his hands together before nodding to his colleague and entering the ship's storage, carrying out large wooden boxes.

Once again, Shogen was saved a lot of speaking time. He was also somewhat surprised to hear the Avatar was just discovered. He wasn't sure if the cult would be meaning to try to endanger the Avatar, but that was what they were founded for in the first place.

"You are correct, we need to know anything we can about what the cult is doing," Shogen confirmed. "Anything from books they written to letters they exchanged. And of course, kill him if he is proving to be a threat."

Shogen then received a rather unexpected answer: Nilak suggested that she help him out with the entire opperation. Shogen was under the impression that she was a somewhat of a cold person (I mean, she DID just threatened his life) but first impressions weren't everything. Shogen thought hard about her offer, thinking that further needs of her sevices may be needed depending on how spread out this operation is.

"If the web of this cult does expand beyond the Earth Kingdom then you would be correct," Shogen said nodding. "I will make a note to ask the general about it."

Nilak nodded. The earth bender was more level headed and reasonable than most of her clients.

"Tell me what you know about my target and where I can go into to start my mission," she asked, reaching over to where Shogen sat and grabbing a small, fur-bound notebook and a pencil.

"Don't worry about what you see me write down. This notebook won't leave my sight while I memorize the information. When I'm certain I know what I'm doing, the pages will be destroyed," she reassured. Nilak settled back onto her bed and opened to the first blank page.

Feeling the ship slow to a stop, Tanvi let out a huge sigh of relief. 'Thank the spirits...' she thought tiredly. 'Any longer and I was going to get sea-sick!' she sighed, wiping a drop of sweat from her brow. Peering out from behind the wooden box she'd been hiding behind, she watched as the crew members departed, taking some of the smaller boxes with them. Catching sight of someone heading her way, she cursed silently and ducked back behind her box.

Holding her breath, she closed her eyes and started to count back from ten, hoping to calm herself down. If she freaked out now, she'd be caught and who knows what they would do to her. No, she refused to allow herself to be found out after she made it this far! Letting her breath escape, she opened her eyes, only to be greeted by the box that blocked her from view being lifted.

Startled, she let out a soft squeal. "Ah!" she cried and winced immediately, cursing herself again. Peering up at the large man from the Earth Tribe, Tanvi waited in fear to see what would become of her.

Kazu kept his breath steady as he continued unloading the ship. It was hard work, but he was used to it by now.
The storage room provided some much-needed shade, and after a while they'd moved most of the boxes.

He wiped his sweaty hands on his shirt and found another box, lifting it. A noise startled him, and he dropped it.
What was it? A rat? It sounded human.

"You 'k there, Kaz?" his colleague asked while lifting another box.

"Yeah..." Kazu answered as he peeked behind the box.

A startled teenage girl, dressed in Fire Nation clothes, looked up at him. He took a step back, surprised. His colleague didn't notice.

Kazu scratched his beard and stared at the girl, dumbfounded. Why are you here? he mouthed.
Was she supposed to be?

Shogen nodded. He felt very good about the choice he made to hire this woman. "The man is General Roh. I do not know a great deal about him however, as he is far above my rank so I don't converse with him often. I do know however, that he lives in a large mansion in the upper ring of Ba Sing Se. I can give you a map and mark its location if you need it. But I also should warn you that he is a pretty deadly bender from what I heard."

MuskyMuscovado MuskyMuscovado

Nilak smirked."Nothing pleases me more than taking down someone who lives beyond their means in a city like Ba Sing Se. I thought the well-off were bad back in my tribe, earth kingdom aristocracy makes them look humble," she replied, rolling her eyes.

"The map would be lovely. And don't fret over me. I highly doubt this man has ever had to fight a water bender. And hopefully, he wont have to," she assured.

"Hadn't been outside of Ba Sing Se in a while, so I suppose I wouldn't know," Shogen said. Despite his father's relatively high military position, he and Shogen only lived in the the middle ring of Ba Sing Se, even though he was free to travel to the upper ring whenever he pleased.

"Yeah I doubt it too, I don't recall us being at war with any of the Water Tribes," Shogen stated as he pulled out a map of the metropolis of Ba Sing Se and marked on the map where Roh lived. Then he looked up from the map towards Nilak. "So when do you believe you will be ready for this?" Shogen asked her.

MuskyMuscovado MuskyMuscovado

Standing beside Shogen to eye his marked map, Nilak shrugged at his question."Nothing like the present. Evening is upon us and I can make it to Ba Sing Se in the early morning hours using an associate's ostrich horse. The perfect time for me to strike, at night. Waterbenders are their most powerful then," she said.

Reaching under her bed, she fetched four water skins, three of them already filled with water. They had straps to fit around Nilak's body, which she put on. Nilak opened the stopper to the empty water skin.

Turning to Shogen, she smirked."All other benders, like you, are lucky. You have a constant supply of your bending material around you. Waterbenders...have to get more crafty," with that comment, she lifted her arms so Nilak stood in a T position. Breathing out and moving her arms downward, water droplets began to form from thin air. As her arms lowered, the droplets became larger until water concentrated at Nilak's hands. Bringing her hands together, between them floated a perfectly spherical ball of water, the size of a cantaloupe.

Nilak's arm whipped outward, the water ball following and transforming into a line of water, which she guided into her empty water skin, sealing it after all the water flowed inside.

"Waterbenders have to get crafty with how we get our bending material," she commented, grabbing her journal and the map off her desk by Shogen.

Storing them in a pocket of her tunic, she looked at her guest."Where shall I meet you after my mission is done?"
