Niklas stands in the crowd alongside the cadets. He hasn't said a word, not one, not a single one, his lips sealed shut. He's frozen with fear except from that slight shiver every now and then when he looks at Flax's smile, that menacing smile and menacing teeth... Should the officials have left the cadets alone with these monsters? He shakes his head at the notion. Or... is that a shiver?

Deciding to keep her mouth shut further Victoria's hand twitches slightly, her grandparents and uncle all had been where she was now, they trained her knowing she would want to join "Guess my grandfather can finally give me that special training of his, what did he call it? Special training for short people?" she thinks, finding it funny how she hadn't even stopped growing at that point, she just hoped that her parents wouldn't find out where she was, they'd ground her for life and make her milk the cows everyday.

When Rin the Researcher, Drill Sergeant Dave and all the other officials have left, one of the Cadet Corps trainees strolls forwards through the rows. She reaches the front... yet doesn't stop. Apparently, she wants a closer look of Soy, the titan whose body is shackled and stapled to the concrete.

"That's Samantha Smith,” one cadet says. “The one from Shiganshina."

"I know. Didn't she say she wanted to be with the Military Police?"

"Yes. That's her... Wait. What in Wall Maria is she doing?"

"That's too close, Sam! Get back!"

"She's lost her mind," another cadet yells.

"Relax. Look, it can't move,” Samantha Smith says. “This--"

Abruptly, Soy's neck twists, twists so much that the angle is impossible. The cadet, herself, is visibly surprised, even more so when the titan opens up his mouth... his bear trap of a jaw closing around her head and cutting it cleanly off like a guillotine of bone.

Sprays of red burst out of where her windpipe would be like a fountain of flesh. Some of this blood catches the cadets four or five rows down. For most of them it hasn't registered, the death, the slaughter... the sheer savagery of it.

They only watch as he cracks through her severed skull with his molars like a hen's egg and blood along with brain burst out from his lips, soft and sticky in the way a yolk is... except this yolk is a boldly bright red. Soy uses his tongue to pick away at some ear between his teeth.

The cadet, headless yet still standing, steps backwards. You could mistake this movement, this twitch of a calf muscle, for consciousness... but those more privy to the human body will know it's simply the nerves, this shock of death shooting haywire electrical signals here, there and everywhere, much like cut cable circuits. Finally, Samantha falls and Soy, horrifying yet still shackled, manages to pull this poor girl in by her ankle and finish his meal.

When one cadet lets out a scream so loud her vocal chords are at risk, silence, at long last, comes to an end. She screams until her voice is as raspy and rough as a cigarette smoker's. And, now, for all of the cadets, it has registered.

Samantha Smith is dead.

Victoria takes a step back staring at Soy, all the air left her body and she goes pale, paler then she is naturally, she doesn't speak a word, she doesn't know what to say, her hand twitching again as she's tempted to reach for daggers she has hidden, as precaution as her uncle said it when she asked why, her eyes show disgust and hatred very slowly as she clenches her fist.

Gasping, Lucas covers his mouth. He takes a step back with Victoria. She's pale? Look at Lucas, then, you can't quite tell if he's a ghost. He wants to say something, anything, but the words are air, raspy and without recognition. The blood catches his uniform, streaks of it, like the strokes of a brush. Red. As red as the sky the moment a sunset is about to end, falling from view. Finally, he finds his voice, but his tongue falters, that horror still working itself through his nerves and by extension his muscles, "Where in Wall Maria's name are they? Where are the officials?"

Midori looks at the titan somehow - somehow, he wasn't quite as scared as the other cadets and they should've know they should've known what these titans are capable of doing! Even when tied down they can still attack can still defend.

Midori doesn't really feel sorry for them either, he eyes the titan that is supposedly happily munching on his meal, his own face was expressionless.

It's their fault for not knowing what they're capable of.

Linne stood there eyes wide, locked on the fallen corpse. A few specs of blood dotted her face and uniform as she had been just on the edge of the spay. Fear and anger jockeyed for position inside her. The room was muffled, she had barely heard the cadet scream. She was panicking. She was hyperventilating. Not that she was even aware. She wished it had eaten her whole. Why'd it have to leave her corpse behind? Her eyes went up to the smiling Titan dropping to the floor almost immediately. She was sure it was loving this. She was sure it was feeding off the fear just as much as it fed off of Samantha. Anger was winning out. She wouldn't give it that satisfaction. Her breath began. A small chuckle began rising. And then she vomited.

Hana watched in horror, her mouth hanging open, wanting to scream but nothing came out. Although it was a disgusting and terrible sight she couldn’t take her eyes off it. Falling to her knees, she grabbed onto the closest thing to her which happened to be Nik’s trouser leg. She felt tears form in her eyes, no way did she want to die like that, or see anyone else...
Maybe this wasn’t for her.

Nik hardly even notices Hana when she clutches at his leg. The young man's eyes are wide as saucers. Just as Linne's are. His skin is paler than Samantha Smith's corpse. Just as Lucas and Victoria's are. He's at a loss for words, a loss for hope, a loss for everything. He only stares at the first casualty of the 88th Cadet Corps. This is how it will be, he muses, this is how it will be but worse in the Scout Regiment.

The commotion brings Drill Sergeant Dave and the others hurrying back. He sees Soy chew through something, either a spleen or stomach. Second thoughts, it could be a kidney... who knows, everything is so red. Seeing the sight, he orders the each and every cadet to the barracks. "To the stables," he yells. "Get to the horses, soldiers! Now!"

Rin the Researcher is by his side, muttering under her breath about how this shouldn't have happened. She scolds Dave for leaving the cadets unattended, "This could've been prevented," with this, that and the other. "I was against this exercise from the beginning. From the planning stages. Now I'll see to it personally that this is discontinued!"

She crosses over towards one cadet who is too traumatised to follow Dave's orders. Talking to him, she realises, is futile. The shock of it all, the blood, the gore, the guts, it has made him catatonic, a shell of his former self.

They weren't ready for this.

Victoria remains where she is right now as she's shaking, not caring about orders, she wasn't shaking from fear though, no she's shaking from anger and she keeps quiet, she would probably say something that'll get her in so much trouble, she's frozen in place. Suddenly the shaking stops and she glances at the drill sergeant, her eyes void of any emotions "Come on Lucas" she says putting an arm around him and leading him to the horses and she looks back at the Titans, it was like all her feelings are just gone, vanished without a trace, she shouldn't get attached to anyone, it's only going to lead to mourning, she wasn't sure what had happened, most would be traumatized, Midori seemed to not care at all, she just feels like this, cold and emotionless.

Slowly she rose her legs, her whole body shaking in fact. Hana used Nik as support helping herself up, finally resting a hand on his shoulder and pushing lighting. Although her eyes were still stuck on the dead body.
“Let’s go” she said solem and quietly. Not talking her eyes off the her fellow lifeless cadet on the floor. Hana’s stomach was in a lot of pain, by the time they reach the horses it let out a grumble.
“Am I the only one who’s really hungry?” The brunette said timidly, a really inappropriately timed attempt at humour. to Hoping to break awkward tension.

Lucas is thankful for Victoria's support, leaning into her as they leave the area and head to the stables. When he walks, the step is an effort, all of them, and it takes some amount of will to keep himself from losing his balance. He decides not to look back lest he vomit out whatever rations still remain in his stomach. When they arrive, he finds comfort in one of the horses, stroking along his flank. Shakily, he murmurs, "Do you think we're still going to be doing the exercise?"

All of the cadets head back to the stables. Those that haven't are either too shocked to collect their thoughts or too shocked to be conscious, having fainted the moment Samantha Smith lost her life in that savage slaughter of tooth and claw. Some of them Rin tries to console but at most the lead researcher simply shakes her head, opting to make them some poor psychologist's problem. She orders her scientists to pick up any stragglers.

"This wasn't supposed to happen," rumbles Dave. "This was an unfortunate accident that I'll take full responsibility for."

"Damn right you will," mutters Rin under her breath.

"More things were planned but we won't be continuing with this exercise," he explains to the cadets, "and will instead head back to the Cadet Corps base to continue military training. Ready the horses," He flicks his hand at several soldiers and they follow his will, retrieving harnesses and heaps of yarn. "Cadets, take to the carriages. We're leaving."

"Good riddance, Dave. Always the brute, never the brains," Rin whispers witheringly in his ear. "Haven't changed since our training days, have you?"

Dave rolls his eyes at her, walking away to ready his horse.

Once he was at the stable, he checked on his pure white fluff Warrior seeing as he was still nestled between his belt and shirt, he seemed relatively fine.

With two fingers he petted between his ears.

Victoria leads Lucas to the carriage, seemingly understanding he can't walk on his own, she gets in and helps him in too before sitting down, putting her bag behind her, she didn't feel like reading at the moment, which was something as she is always seen without a book when they don't have training.

Hana walked slowly to the carriage, taking a seat inside. She put her head down on her knees, covering her Face with her arms.
Deciding to keep to herself.

Climbing into the carriage herself Linne looked out over her fellow cadets, her gaze stopping on each one. She couldn't help but imagine them all in Samantha's position. She quickly looked up at the sky, unable to continue to look them in the face. She ran a shaky hand through her golden blonde hair and let out a deep breath. One thought came to mind now. Better here than the battlefield.

Lucas Lawrence eases himself into the carriage, using Victoria's arm as support. He slumps down beside her, looking her over with eyes that whisper I'll be fine. Shortly afterwards, he stares over at Linne across his shoulder, whose condition seems to be worse than his own. His eyes are cast low, darker than usual, and have a listlessness to them that imply matte steel "Hey, Linne," he calls out, "You managing alright? Yeah... a lot to take in, ain't it? Never thought it would be so... I don't know. Bloody?"

Hearing her name, Linne cast a glance over at Lucas. She forced a smile. A very clearly forced smile that looks more tired than her usual expression. "I'll make it," She replied with a small nod, quickly looking back up lest she visualize his head between the Titan's jaw. "Something we should get used to I suppose..."

"...Yeah," mutters Lucas, lowly, so low that his voice is almost obscured by the creak of carriage as the horses start movement, "Sad, really. Didn't realise that's how it was going to be. Now, though, I realise what else could it have been? Titans won't show mercy. That's why we're behind these Walls. Neither should we. When I kill a titan, when I rip out its nape," Pause, "I'll think of her, that girl... that poor girl back there - Samantha Smith."

"You alright?" says Niklas to Hana as he steps onto her carriage. The oaken wood cries under his boot like a mourning mother. One of his hands he rests on her shoulder in a consoling way. He overhears Lucas in the carriage opposite, nodding, nodding even though he knows he won't see him, and decides to adopt his resolve, clenching his other hand into a fist, fingers furling into his palm so hard his knuckles turn red with fire and blood. Kill a titan, Niklas finds himself musing.
