the rules

1). Follow all RPNation rules. Respect everyone, fade to black for erotic content or extreme gore, and be mature with sensitive matters. Of course, there will be killing involved in this roleplay. However, we ask for the description of the murder scenes to be kept to a PG rating.

2). There are SEVEN positions available. It’s NOT first-come, first-serve. Characters will be accepted based on who will make great additions to our plotlines. The only characters that are gender locked are the simp, the single mum, the ex-con, the influencer and the escort. All others are open to any gender. Characters MUST around 30 years old (youngest being 29, oldest being 35). The single mom, however, can create as many children as they please at any age. Just keep it realistic

3). Discord is a MUST for OOC. In the server, we will discuss plot lines, NPC development, and various other roleplay related agendas. We will also be spending time bonding and getting to know each other a bit more!

4). If you are not familiar with Korean culture, that is okay! But please! Be willing to learn and to ask questions! Research! If you are unsure about something, message me and I can help direct you to where you can find the proper information (for example: if you are unsure on socio-cultural expectations etc). We want to not only have a fun roleplay – but we also want to be as respectful and realistic as possible.

5). As much as I hate not being able to open this roleplay to everyone, writers must be 18+. This is simply because we will be roleplaying mature adult themes.

6). Expectations of posting? Well, I understand that people can get busy with real life. For example, I’m meant to be writing an assignment with ten scholar sources but here I am doing this. However, I do ask if you could try posting at least once a week to keep the RP alive and the story moving. There is no posting order, and we will break the roleplay up with ‘chapters’ with the aid of a generated word. For example; if the generated word is “umbrella”, then we may be experiencing some rain in this chapter. If another generated word is “socks”, then maybe there could be a sock thief in the apartment complex?! Finally, I’d love for the word count to at least hit 500 words. Don’t just give us a bone; we want some juicy meat too, please.

7). Realistic face claims only. Not digital art/anime/manga. Please, please, please, please make sure you do your research (for example, don’t have a character who is 35 with a 21 year old face claim)

8). Communicate with me! If you’re struggling with something or need to take a break – let me know! We can write it into the roleplay!

9). Be respectful! Your personalities may clash or you might struggle to plot with someone. That's okay! It's natural! But it gives you no right to be a horrible person to someone.

  mei-ling has always been a sweetheart. for as long as she can remember she's always been giving people the benefit of the doubt, going to extra mile to help people, and putting everyone before herself. you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like mei-ling upon meeting her, she's had many friends tell her she's as sweet as honey, if not sweeter.
  however, there's always a downside. while mei-ling is sweet and wonderful and kind, she's also shown to be a push-over; she's barely ever stood up for herself. she's incredibly passive, never wanting to engage in conflict. it's led her to some bad situations in the past, her not wanting to do something or not liking how someone treated her but she never did anything about it. it's typical mei-ling. as long as everyone's happy, she's "happy" too.

  3 moments that lead them to where they are today:
  1) mei-ling has always been a mini me of her mother; loving, kind, patient, but also a big push over. growing up and watching how her mother let others treat her led mei-ling to also let others treat her as bad. she never learned to stand up for herself. it lead to her getting into a bad relationship but it also led her to have the greatest gift she could ever have, her daughter.
  
  2) being the middle of five kids led to a lot of peace keeping, being the middle man, making sure everyone was happy. that ultimately led mei-ling to grow up and become a passive people pleaser. she never learned to stand up for herself and she never learned to fight for what she wanted. she always let people do what they wanted, talk to her however they pleased. it lead to her pushing her own wants and need, which actually set her up for being an amazing mother.
  
  3) mei-ling always loved school. she loved learning and she always had such a respect for teachers, people who took time out of their day to help impart knowledge on others, even if they didn't want to learn. this sparked a passion for learning and teaching which of course led her to wanting to become a teacher herself.

  
  
• BACKGROUND

  
  

  TRIGGER WARNING: DOMESTIC ABUSE
  
  mei-ling was born in taiwan, she was born the middle child of five; two older sisters, two younger brothers. right before her youngest brother was born, her entire family uprooted themselves and moved to south korea. her parents have never given her a straight answer as to why they did that, but her eldest sister said it was because their father was having an affair with someone who moved to korea; basically their father was following a booty call to a different country.
  
  once in korea, the xiao family was doing well. well... relatively well. it soon came out that their father was cheating on their mother. the eldest sister, hui-ying, started to prepare for a divorce. divorce meant another move, actually constant moving back in fourth between their mother and their father's house. it also meant a lot of drama for upcoming holidays and gatherings.
  but then, all of a sudden, their mother told them they would be staying together and that was that. there was a big argument that followed, hui-ying fighting with their mother about how she deserves better than to be cheated on so knowingly. that argument resulted in hui-ying getting slapped across the face for being so disrespectful. after that, hui-ying was never the same determined and stubborn girl mei-ling knew growing up.
  
  her whole life, mei-ling watched the women in her family get walked all over. she watched them bend to someone else's will at the first time of trouble. watched them put aside their own dreams for the sake of their partner or anyone else. it's the only model she's ever had to follow in terms of how to be a woman.
  
  other than that, mei-ling was living a good life. her father was still screwing whatever woman from his job, her mother knew, they were still married, and yet the xiao children had a pretty good life. they never went hungry, were always able to give that one random toy or shirt they wanted when going to the store, they were even all able to go to good schools & even go to good colleges because their father was still providing for them.
  
  mei-ling never thought how her mother acted was wrong. she thought that a woman was supposed to do whatever it took to make her relationship last. so when she met a guy while studying to become an elementary teacher, park dae-seong. in the beginning, dae-seong was the perfect boyfriend; charming, sweet, even mei-ling's parents approved of him. the only people wary of him were her little brothers, but that's what little brothers were for. in the beginning, mei-ling felt like she was living a fairy-tale. dae-seong would surprise her with flowers on random days, he learned to cook her favorite foods, he even took her on a road trip, out of the blue. it was sweet and romantic and everything mei-ling ever wanted.
  
  approaching their two year anniversary, dae-seong began to grow more distant. mei-ling figured it was just the stress of school, as he was studying to become a neurosurgeon. on their two year anniversary, they actually moved in together, mei-ling still felt like she was living in a fairy-tale. she always had it in her head that once she moved in with a guy, that was it; that was the guy she was going to marry and spend the rest of her life with.
  
  unfortunately, it wasn't just the stress of school getting to dae-seong. mei-ling tried to start a conversation about it, what she thought was the stress making him a different person than she started dating two years ago. that conversation pissed dae-seong off, more than mei-ling could've ever seen coming. he kept yelling at her and she kept trying to apologize, trying to de-escalate the argument; however, despite her best efforts, dae-seong was not calming down any time soon. before she realized it, he slapped her to shut her up. it was immediately followed with him begging her forgiveness, a typical manipulation tactic that dae-seong was not done using.
  
  that one incident started a massive chain reaction of more physical violence displayed towards mei-ling. she tried to ignore it, she thought it was him punishing her for being a bad girlfriend, she tried to learn from her mistakes whenever he slapped, hit, or even kicked her. however, she never seemed to understand what set him off. he was set off by something different every time. but she endured it. for the next year she endured it. and then, right before she was going to graduate and become a teacher, she discovered she was pregnant.
  
  mei-ling was secretly elated. she had always wanted a baby, sure she wanted it after she graduated and was married and financially stable for a child, but she was excited all the same. she also knew this would be a reason to talk to her family. ever since mei-ling moved in with dae-seong, he had be slowly cutting her off from them, he wanted her to rely on him and only him. but she knew she had to talk to them, she had to share the news about becoming a mother.
  
  dae-seong didn't like that. not one bit. he knew that the baby was something connecting her to her family. he knew the only way to keep her disconnected from her family was to convince mei-ling to terminate the pregnancy. of course mei-ling rejected the notion, never in a million years did she ever want to have an abortion, it was never an option for her because she could never imagine herself getting rid of a baby when a baby was something she always wanted.
  
  she had secretly reached out to her sister, hui-ying, when she first found out she was pregnant. hui-ying was almost as excited as mei-ling and had no hesitation telling the rest of the family. her siblings wanted to have lunch with her as soon as possible, because to their knowledge, mei-ling grew distant because of school. but now that she was having a baby, she was taking a break from school so they knew she had time to see them again.
  
  dae-seong was fifty shades of pissed off. the last thing he needed was the xiao family butting into his life and ruining the perfect, complacent girl to do whatever he wanted for the rest of his life. so of course, it led to more and more beating in hopes that she would miscarry. the only reason mei-ling and her baby survived was because hui-ying came to their place in the middle of the fiasco. seeing her baby sister lay helpless on the floor while the man who was supposed to be fathering her baby was kicking the life out of her set a fire in hui-ying's heart. she immediately grabbed his shoulders and threw him away from mei-ling with all her strength.
  
  long story short, dae-seong was out of mei-ling's life forever. it took a lot of convincing from her to make sure her little brothers didn't track him down and damn near kill him. it went without saying that mei-ling was to stay at home while going through her pregnancy and even while getting used to being a new mother. and when the baby finally came, mei-ling was ten times more excited that she had a baby girl. mei-ling named her daughter mi-rae, and she loved that baby girl more than she ever thought she could love anything.
  
  three years later, once mei-ling got a hold of being a mother, she went back and completed her schooling to become an elementary school teacher. she felt like her life was falling into place, and she knew that for her life to keep going how she wanted, she needed to move out. she absolutely loved living with her family and she loved how active of a role they had in mi-rae's life, but she wanted to live on her own, she wanted to start her life, finally.
  
  there were many conversations, but her family finally agreed and came to terms with mei-ling wanting to move out, under the condition that her little brother came with her. mei-ling rolled her eyes but she accepted, she loved her brother and knew she would need the extra help wherever she could take it.
  
  and now, living with her 9-year old and her brother, she's been working as a teaching aide for the last three years and as much as she's been loving it, she's been dying to get a job as an actual teacher, not an aide anymore. she doesn't know how much longer she can keep living her life as a mom with a growing little girl

    Personality
    Mi-Sun is a woman who can come off very haughty and pompous when first meeting her, and she is to some degree, certainly full of herself in many respects. She is prone to bossing people around, especially if she sees herself in some position higher than them in some way. Seemingly spoiled with a catty tongue to match, Mi-Sun finds herself in many petty arguments and spats. She desperately wants to be recognized and to get somewhere in life, to be famous, popular, and well-liked by everyone. Having been told she was beautiful since she was young, it's the only thing she finds of value about herself. Mi-Sun is prone to sucking up to any and everyone who she thinks could get her higher in the social hierarchy of fame, status, and fortune. She's ready and willing to try nearly anything if it means reaching her goal. Not caring if she becomes an actress, an idol, a model, online influencer, etc, as long as it means she'll be known and adored.
    
    However, a lot of her personality is built on a warped sense of pride and fragility based on Mi-Sun's need to rise to expectations while constantly comparing herself to others. The constant adoration for her looks growing up ended up making her feel shallow, that she wasn't anything more than a pretty face, and to many, she was in fact, simply just that. Mi-Sun is prone to getting herself in bad situations due to her blind pursuit of fame. Being rather gullible and trusting, yet hurt one too many times; compounding that distorted her view of herself, Mi-Sun tries to keep herself going with genuine attempts at making the best of any situation. Doing the best to enjoy the little things, and still always feeling empty by the time she closes her eyes every night. The pressure seems to never go away, and she takes it out on others often, earning her the nickname 맵선 Mep-Sun, a pun on behalf of her 'spicy' personality.
    
    Despite Mi-Sun's ego, she is a rather hard worker. She claims she doesn't have the money or resources to afford fancy equipment or hire professionals to help her try with her social media endeavors, often spending many sleepless nights working on everything herself, from editing to location scouting, and more. Even trying to learn English in an earnest attempt to make herself more marketable, though she's barely literate and understandable, despite how much she gloats about her 'good' English. Curiously enough, Mi-Sun does have a sizable savings account, but she's terrified of using it, being rather stingy with her money, even when it comes to advancing her chosen career path. Living off as little as she can with the occasional clothing items or trip, though she'd never admit she only bought things on sale or at a thrift store. Even eating less with the excuse to herself and others that she's just watching her weight, when in fact she just doesn't want to use her savings if she can help it. Deeply affected by a dark time in her life, she doesn't even think she's worth spending it on, among other intense fears/triggers and PTSD. Often even taking on multiple jobs, mostly at restaurants and babysitting in order to support herself independently; attempting to living off one job while saving the rest, while also partly due to the fact that she has a hard time saying no, especially if someone compliments her beauty.
    
    Mi-Sun is, in many respects, quite a responsible, sensitive, and kind woman. Usually putting in extra effort in order to aid those in need, even at her own detriment. Especially fond of children and the elderly. Her altruistic personality is often hidden under her bashful front, and so many don't see her for who she really is. Something she's rather content with, as she even fears that, thinking people will view her as lesser. Mi-Sun is a cracking vase covered in dollar store tape.

    Mi-Sun's high school years had been filled with boys fawning over her and earning the jealousy of numerous girls. The constant attention from her natural beauty was more than she was used to even in middle school, and she didn't handle it too, well, but she didn't hate it either. It made her feel happy that people desired her for something. Even if she wasn't the best at everything she was still at least liked by someone. Eventually gaining the courage to join an idol trainee program with her best friend Maria, the two girls worked hard their Junior and senior years of high school to get as far they could both academically and in the program. Mi-Sun's grades were nothing to scoff at, but her best friend was the one who had more traction while they trained for their chance for stardom. Mi-Sun had to hold back Maria from trying to force the trainee managers to give Mi-Sun her spot in the next phase of the program, not wanting her best friend to ruin their chances just for her sake. Eventually, they split but still, Mi-Sun was crushed. She had the marks to get into a good college, but she ruminated on her missed chance for fame for too long and options narrowed so she took the year off to work instead. Telling herself it would be better to get the money now than later, but it was more or less an excuse to be available in case she got that slim chance of being re-scouted, but it never came, and she did eventually put her dreams aside and went to Ewha Woman's University, graduating in the Division of Eco Science. She moved back home for a while, ready to get out into the world and apply for a good job, yet still, she felt somewhat empty. Until she met a guy who might be able to help her reach her still burning dream of fame.

    Mi-Sun eventually moved out of her home to move in with her then at the time boyfriend. He was at least five years older than her, and she respected her seeming maturity and ability to be rather independent, even promising to help her further her goal to reach celebrity status. However, as the months went by she found herself working harder and harder to please him, all while he grew more aggressive and distant. Having her do the chores around the house, while also taking any pay she brought home from work. It wasn't long until she had caught him with another girl, but he threatened both of them and they both yielded. The other girl moved in and the situation became even more dire, neither of them felt they could stand up to him, and he made sure they wouldn't. Mi-Sun had been considering leaving for a while and had been scrambling to save whatever she could from her jobs to runaway but she couldn't bring herself to leave the other woman alone with him and feared what would happen if she did. Even worse, their 'boyfriend' had a little brother who was oblivious to the evil of his older sibling, and the girls equally worried about the younger brother's safety and did what they could to keep the boy from witnessing the increasingly violent and atrocious state of the household. Not wanting him the sweet kid from turning into another monster. They were trapped. Things continued to get worse, it was to the point that Mi-Sun stopped wearing short sleeves and shorts altogether to hide her scars and bruised when she went to work, which was usually her only time outside the house. The other girl wasn't handling it as well, and Mi-Sun worked twice as hard to make sure she didn't have to. They were each others' only support and solace, but things were going to reach a breaking point.
    
    And they did.
    
    It had been some since their 'boyfriend' had been bringing other guys to the house to show off his 'possessions'. Something, Mi-Sun was numb to at this point, being forced into similar situations as a 'side job' but the other girl wasn't, and unbeknownst to Mi-Sun, the other girl had been secretly been working a shiv for when she finally snapped.
    
    She did.
    
    Mi-Sun doesn't remember much from that night, other than hiding in the bathroom, holding the little brother in her arms for dear life all night, covering his ears in vain of her own from the shouting and crashing from outside. They were found the next day by the police, still in the bathroom. The boy was taken into child custody who had located his closest relatives who she was assured were vetted, welling mean people. Much to Mi-Sun's relief, as she wouldn't let go of him until she was sure he was safe, though this could very well have been due to the shellshock. Mi-Sun was taken to a nearby station before then a hospital, to be treated for a plethora of ailments and injuries.
    
    She, to this day, doesn't know what happened to her ex and the other woman, having blocked the scene she witnessed after leaving the bathroom from her mind.

    
    Not wanting her family to know what happened to her she turned to her closest friend Maria, who took her in without hesitation and took time out of her schedule to care for Mi-Sun and help her through rehabilitation and therapy before she was ready to go home, planning to move in with her brother. Though despite major improvements with her mental health Mi-Sun would never be the same. Yet, she pushed on ever forward; cracked but not shattered, not yet. Mi-Sun bounced back eventually, more determined than ever to make her dreams a reality.
    
    She's still not sure what she truly wants to do, and hasn't even applied for a job better than menial labor despite her prestigious college and post-graduate degree. Whatever she eventually did, she would be a star, no matter what it took.
    
    Life was way too short.

    Maria
    
    Maria is one of Mi-Sun's close friends, if not one of her only genuine friends. They had known each other since high school, and it was Maria who succeeded in the idol trainee program instead of Mi-Sun. They remained in contact despite their growing separation, and while many, especially Maria's own friends believe Mi-Sun is only around to mooch off of her and is friends with Maria because she's famous, they're simply just good friends. Mi-Sun has no other motive than wanting to spend time with one of the few people she can connect with, and open up to. Though with Maria's busy scheduling and constant traveling it's hard for them to ever meet for prolonged periods of time, they do manage somehow. Maria understands and recognizes Mi-Sun for who she is and would be more than happy to help promote her friend and get her career going, but Mi-Sun made Maria promise that if the struggling girl ever asked for help, their friendship would be over. Still, Maria offers hospitality whenever she can, even letting Mi-Sun stay at her home when she needs to for any reason, as so far as to trust her childhood friend with a spare key.
