ADVENTURER ON WINDS UNFORETOLD

Basic Information

Name: ( 张銮 ) Luán Zhāng

Nicknames/Aliases: Lu, more often than not.

Gender: Male

Age: 20

Appearance

Height: 6'0'' Weight: 180 (Due to muscle and definition)

Hair Color: Ashen Black

Eye Color: A light leaf green.

Extra Features: A small scar across the bridge of his nose.

General Description:
Gentle of face, strong of body. Lu is what some would consider in this day and age a "pretty boy". Yet his toweringly tall body does not match the face that goes with it. His body is toned, but not overly muscular.

In-Depth

Personality: Meticulous, but by far outgoing and respectful. A kind soul, living in an incredibly tall body. The air of an adventurer's will thickly exudes its presence onto Lu. He shows a great range of humor, and quick wit. A good drinking buddy, as well as a stranger to confide in. A selfless man at heart, his willingness to help others is without question his most noble trait, and perhaps even a fatal flaw.

Background:
Training for most of his life within the Kongtong Sect of the Kongtong Mountains, a 5 years younger Lu decided to part ways with his organization and travel the Jiangshu as a Youxia, much like an inspirational figure among the Sect: Mulingzi. Though it did not start off the way Lu had hoped, he quickly learned over time that his kindness would often get him into trouble if he didn't keep a considerate eye. His smile is welcoming, but his presence often seems reclusive now in hopes he doesn't get into trouble. Though much like a young man, Lu will always come across danger and trouble no matter his path. He takes it in stride, but tries his best to learn from any of his own mistakes along the way. During his travels, Lu asked to unwind at a campfire for the night- which led him to meet Yan Muchun. Doing so he quickly hit it off, and began to regale Yan Muchun with stories of his absurd situations he has come by. Who knew getting into trouble and danger was such great content for a night of sharing stories? Quickly, Lu referred Yan Muchun as a good friend. Lu's motivation for helping Yan Muchun is rather simple, actually; He just wants to share stories with his friend again! Lu does not seem to seek any sort of glory or help, believing anything he learns along the way will have given him the growth he needs and the training he will perfect in time.

Relationships: Yan Muchun (Mutual Friend: Shares stories at campfire)

Combat

Weapon(s) of choice, abilities, etc. as well as how proficient they are.

Polearm: Lu is especially skilled with the Polearm. Though no master, Lu has shown considerable strides in being extremely proficient with its heft, size, length, and style of combat. In tandem with his Neili, Lu becomes a force to reckon with.

Martial Arts: Lu is a considerably skilled fighter, he does not boast his skill as he is well aware he is not of a level of mastery. Still, a young man may grow and become something extraordinary.

Neili: Lu has an exceptional internal force, and is perhaps most proficient with his inner energy than anything else. His internal force is strong enough to cover his bases where he may be lacking in terms of martial arts but as it is a finite resource, and on top of that easily capable of being dismantled, Lu must be protective, as well as get stronger with where he lacks.

Abilities: Include any techniques that they may use

Spinning Sweep: Lu swings his Polearm 360 degrees, causing the area around him to become a danger zone. The strength of his strike, combined with his Neili, makes the wind kick up, and pressurized air to blast forth from the tip of his blade.

Wayward Wind Thrust: Using his polearm to thrust towards his opponent, the tip of the blade becomes a barrage of multile stabbing motions, hard to track with the naked eye.

Wind-Cutter: Lu generates his strength in his arms, swinging downward with his polearm at full strength. Capable of slicing a rock clean in half.

Soaring Kick: Lu soars through the sky with an outstretched leg to attack his opponents. Good for surprise attacks!

Walking Fist: Lu dashes towards his opponent with his fist stretched forward. Good for closing the gap in battle.

Extras

Optional:

Lu's Polearm doubles as a staff when sheathed, and unusually seems to be capable of producing music through various indentations and holes carved along the weapon. When sheathed, it acts like an oversized flute, and Lu plays it with a masterful hand and breath.
Lu owns a dagger for the sake of needing an extra weapon if his polearm is incapable of his own reach.

THE SPEARMASTER

Basic Information

Name: Zhang Shiyang

Nicknames/Aliases: The Thunder Lance of the South

Gender: Male

Age: 25

Appearance

Faceclaim: See Right

Height: 6' 2

Hair Color: Black

Eye Color: Brown

Extra Features: N/A

General Description: N/A

In-Depth

Personality: Zhang Shiyang is a stern, practical man. He hails from the hard-bitten south, where the Viet blademasters and Nanman barbarians and Imperial Legions all clash regularly, where a martial artist is much less feared than the march of disciplined men. Even the mightiest martial artist can be brought down by a stiff phalanx of elite spears and a hail of crossbow bolts, not to mention the charge of cavalry. After much trial and tribulation, he has become a serious individual who does not indulge in the flights of pride and ego that so often defined the feuds and martial passions of his past. Life is too precious to waste on such frivolity, as far as he is concerned... Though if one truly wishes to die for it so eagerly, he will oblige them. He is a detached man these days, in search of higher truth, rather than any base matter.

...Most of the time, anyway. He will fight for the honor of Xiaolongbao dumplings over northern dumplings any day.

Background:
Zhang is from a small family of martial artists that had long lived to the south of the Empire. Such families rose and fell in the region regularly, inspired by its natural wonders of flora, fauna, and qi; as well as honed by the constant warfare in the region.... and cut short by them just as quickly. Zhang was a powerful and prodigious martial artist even in his childhood, boastful and proud. He would journey the region often to test his skills, matching spear against the finest the South had to offer. Over time, his arrogance was restrained and tempered, his skills honed, and he journeyed to seek enlightenment... But then, as it so often does, tragedy struck. When a powerful beast slaughtered his family while he was away, Zhang was struck with fury and despair when he returned to their corpses after one long journey. He set out on a journey of revenge, eventually managing to corner the enormous monster with the help of Yan Muchun's advice and finally slay the beast. The prodigious martial artist, with no more attachments to the region, decided to set his journey north, accompanying Yan Muchun to repay him for his aid.

Relationships:
Revered and Reviled - His past arrogance and fame have earned him as many admirers from the South as has earned him enemies. Any from such a region will have at least heard of his reputation, and probably have an opinion on him.

Combat

Weapon(s) of Choice: The Spear, Empty Hand

Abilities:
  • Southern Coiling Dragon Spear:
    • His family's martial art is a versatile and powerful spear-art, taking inspiration from myriad sources. It focuses on whirling movements with the spear, that can be pushed outwards to clear space and deliver powerful blows, or pulled inward to fight in close confines and deliver a flurry of strikes. It is at its most effective in controlling and pressuring an opponent, pushing them back and exhausting them with repeated strikes simply with a spear's raw reach, before delivering a series of finishing blows once the opponent is weakened.
    • Masters of the art such as him, however, can channel the full authority of the dragon, pulling the wind itself along with his spear. This enables him to strike the opponent with blasts of wind and lightning, and to aid his own movement with powerful gusts of air. Zhang in particular has honed this ability to be able to create slashes and drills of wind with his spear, that sweep through the battlefield.
  • Blood Viper Palm:
    • A martial art he invented through observing the Serpent which slew his family, to supplement the reach of his spear. Powerful and sudden palm movements strike out with lightning speed to deal great internal damage upon those they impact, while having the strength and swiftness to aid in countering opponents who close with him.
  • Seven Wings of the Swallow:
    • He learned this footwork technique by meditating underneath a waterfall and contemplating the flight of a nest of swallows, as each chick leapt from the tree to fly or fall. It conveys him an impressive lightfoot ability, focusing on whirling, soaring movements, that convey him over and around his opponents.

Extras

Optional, things such as mundane skills, miscellaneous facts, etc.
- Is interested in the cuisine of the regions beyond the south. Not enough to say it's superior to the South's cuisine.
- A bit of a ladies' man, oddly enough.

Yi Ke Xuesheng, Xun Bihua
dessin-anime-mignon-anime-style-chinois-cheongsam-costume-belle-fille-fond-ecran-illustration_327903-556616.jpg
Basic InformationName: Xun Hualin

Nickname/Alias: Her courtesy name is Bihua. Dr. Li, her master and medical teacher, calls her Hua Xuesheng.

Gender: Female

Age: 18

AppearanceHeight: 5'4''

Eye Color: Blue

Hair Color: Black, with a pair of blue streaks due to unfinished cultivation. She tells people it's dyed from the juice of a wild indigo.

Extra Features: Her ears are pierced, though she only wears earrings on special occasions.

General Description (Optional): Small face, small nose, small lips, and large doe-eyes, Bihua looks a bit like a doll when she's not dressed in boys' clothing, which she tends to do more often than not (despite the fc picture). She finds that clients take her more seriously as a doctor's assistant when she's wearing pants instead of a dress. Her long hair is usually tied up into a bun or tucked under a cap and she will not wear accessories unless it's a special occasion (like in the fc picture) or the doctor asks her to.

In-DepthPersonality: An inquisitive, curious mind that thirsts for knowledge, Bihua never quite fit the traditional, ideal mold her parents wanted for her. She is stubborn, willful, and probably a little bit spoiled due to her upbringing. She isn't spoiled in the sense that needs finery or riches to sustain her lifestyle, but she usually wants things her way and can get a little...upset...when she isn't being listened to. If she believes she is in the right, she'll act on it, regardless of the consequences...like running away from home in order to avoid an arranged marriage with a person she doesn't know, for example. Bihua hasn't even met her supposed betrothed yet. She doesn't need to. She is caring and greatly values life. If she sees someone injured, whether they a good, evil, or otherwise, she would offer to assist them with whatever limited medical skills she (as a doctor's assistant) possesses. Despite being the heiress of the Xun Family, a prominent family in the Emei Sect, Bihua dislikes fighting and prefers to cut up a person in order to heal them rather than kill them.

She loves reading, especially medical journals/scrolls, but novels and stories are good too. Calligraphy appeals to her and if being a doctor doesn't work out, she could always make a living transcribing books.

Background: As the eldest daughter of the Xun Family, Hualin's place in the Emei sect was secured even before she was born. As soon as she was old enough to hold a sword (the tender age of 4) she was ushered up Mount Emei and left in the hands of the Abbess, who just so happens to be her Aunt. 3/4 of a year living and training up in Mount Emei. 1/4 of a year living and training in the Xun Family estate. That was Hualin's childhood. That's not to say training was the entirety of Hualin's childhood. Maids would often complain about her spontaneous disappearance from lectures and prayer sessions whenever she got bored and decided to wander. If she got tired of swinging the sword, she'd hide in library (with the assistance of some of the more mischievous Emei Sisters) and read until she was satisfied. She challenged her instructors, especially in the etiquette, morality, and women's education classes, questioning the curriculum they taught and, more often than not, received punishment for it. Was her life perfect? No. But she didn't hate it.

Then came her Coming-of-Age Ceremony.

At 15 years old, in a grand banquet with hundreds of guests and gifts, she was given her Courtesy name, Bihua, and told of her engagement to a wealth lord of some distant land. Distraught, Bihua pleaded with her parents to little avail. They wouldn't budge. The carriage that would take her to her new betrothed and her newly married life would arrive the next day (they know her). Therefore, Bihua did the only thing she could do. In the dead of the night, the young heiress of the Xun Family snuck out of her family's compound with her family's heirloom sword (which was a gift to her upon her coming of age anyway) and ran away from home. She couldn't count on her sisters in Emei since the Abbess was her aunt (her mother's sister) and she didn't want to get them in trouble. The Xun family had strong ties in the Emei school of martial arts, after all. They were also a powerful and wealthy family that could give anyone, including skilled martial artists, a difficult time if they tried.

And so Bihua wandered the lands as a homeless vagrant on her first journey. Her first adventure. To be honest, it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Food wasn't readily available and soft beds were hard to come by as she learned firsthand how commoners truly lived...but she'd still choose that over losing her freedom any day. Besides, it wasn't too bad. She learned a lot and there were few thugs the Emei swordplay couldn't defeat for cash if really necessary. She tried not to use it too often though since that would make it easier for the Xun family to locate her. Then, one day, Bihua encountered something she couldn't defeat with her blade. Wandering into a village plagued with an unknown epidemic, she fell ill and was bedridden for nearly a month. As she counted the days until her death, that was when she met her savior, Dr. Li Chen.

It was at that moment that Bihua found her calling in life; Something not decided by her parents. Watching the good doctor heal all the sick people of the village, Bihua realized that she wanted to do the same. She wanted to save the people that couldn't be saved by a sword. She was also fascinated by the studies involving the inner workings of the body, partly due to her own near death experience, and partly because the complexity of medicine challenged her mind. And so, Bihua began her new journey as a doctor's apprentice, traveling with Dr. Li Chen, learning, and helping all the sick and injured they encountered, from his clients to random strangers. At some point during their journey, the pair crossed paths with Yan Muchun and Puyang Zi, though she doubts they remember the boy-dressed girl that accompanied Dr. Li. In fact, the mysterious letter that arrived at their door was probably addressed to Dr. Li Chen and not her, but Bihua intercepted because...it sounded fun. The rare magical herb described in the letter would surely be an excellent birthday gift to the doctor that saved her life. Riches as well, though the reward itself didn't matter too much to Bihua who was mostly just curious. Leaving her own letter behind, Bihua told her master that she was taking an extended "trip" to help one of their "clients" and not to worry about her.

Theoretically, she'd be back before the next new moon...

Relationships (Optional):
  • Dr. Li Chen: Bihua's teacher and master in her pursuit of medicine.
  • Xun Haoyu and Xun Xingxing: Bihua's father and mother respectively
  • Song Jiaxing: The current abbess of the Emei Sect/School of martial arts.
CombatEmei Swordplay: Renowned as one of the most beautiful swordplays of the land, Bihua, whenever she decides to wield a sword, is an sight to behold. Despite not really using a sword for 3 years (since she started traveling with Dr. Li), holding one comes naturally to her due to her childhood days and she usually keeps Yue Mao (family heirloom sword) wrapped up by her side, even if she doesn't draw it unless absolutely necessary. Doing so risks exposing her identity, after all. Still, her identity is the reason swordsmanship is in her blood. Give her a blade and she'll know how to use it (generally).

Emei swords tend to be extremely sharp, light, and thin (for women) and the swordplay itself tactical in nature. Direct stabs are less common as the style is circuitous and tends to focus on positioning for surprise attacks, but it is also hard and fast as necessary. Hard, fast, soft, agile, and smart. The lightness of the weapon allows for quick reactions and agile movements so, yes, you'll see her throw in a kick here and there to knock her opponent off balance. As one of the top performers of her year before running away from home, Bihua is quite good...though it's been 3 years so she might've gotten a bit rusty.

Dance of Scalpel and Needles: Basically the Emei swordplay, but using a scalpel as a dagger and needle projectiles (Prick of Emei), you'll see Bihua use this style of combat more often than not since she prefers not to draw her blade. The medical supplies tend to be coated by a strong anesthetic making battles short, though it depends on the opponent's resistance to foreign substances. Drawn out battles are to Bihua's advantage. Since she's using a shorter weapon, this style requires more speed and accuracy, though even a bear can be taken down with a needle to the jugular (several needles depending on the size of the bear).

Hand to Hand Combat: Bihua's hand to hand combat isn't as good as her swordplay, but it's by no means bad. She uses a soft style and has been taught to use the opponent strength against them, so rarely will you see her throw the first punch unless she's required to. Added to that is the knowledge of joints, bones, and pressure/acupuncture points she learned while traveling 3 years with Dr. Li, means she knows how lock up the joints of her opponents, numb/slow their movements, and even stop the flow of qi/neili for a bit if you let her land her combination of "heavenly" strikes.

Flying Blade Technique: Channeling Qi/Neili to weapon she holding, Bihua can strengthen it like she does her own body, being "one with the sword" in combat. From there, she is able to manipulate the weapon like an extension of her arm, though the further away it is from her body, the harder it is to control. Her father can make hundreds of blades fly. Bihua can make one. Maybe. Yue Mao doesn't seem to like her much. She can do it with scalpels and needles too, though her limit is probably 3 for small objects.

Fairy Step: The Qinggong/Lightness Skill learned on Mount Emei. Bihua is proficient in this and uses it to keep up with martial artists both on land and sea, but I wouldn’t call her an expert at the skill and she certainly can’t make herself light enough to actually fly like she does her blade.

Qi/Neili Transfer: For those lacking in qi or suffering from a severe imbalance, Bihua knows the technique that allows her to safely transfer her own qi/neili to the target, directing it so it doesn’t disturb their body’s flow. This increases their body’s natural vitality, health, and overall speed of recovery so a person that would normally be laid out for a week might wake up in 3 days, for example. Minor wounds, cuts, and even broken bones can be healed quicker than normal…so long as there’s nothing impeding the body’s natural healing process (like poison or an extremely persistent disease).

The cost, of course, is Bihua’s own qi. The more she transfers, the more she transfers, the more tired she gets and depending on the severity of the imbalance, could knock her out as well. Most of the time, unless absolutely necessary, she’d let them recover naturally after giving them proper treatment (medicines, braces to makes sure the bone grows back properly, etc).

She can also use this technique on an ally that isn't ill, further strengthening them.

Healing Strike of the Heavens: After accumulating Qi/Neili to her eyes to access the flow of the target’s Qi (and Neili if they are a martial artist), she performs a series of strikes to the area of the meridians that redirects their qi flow and (hopefully) realigns it. Various illnesses affect qi flow in various ways (a different combination of strikes for different symptoms) and Bihua is still studying (as an apprentice doctor) so, if she's dealing with something she's not familiar with, there’s a 30% chance she gets the right combination of strikes on the first try (completely healing the target and expelling impurities), 30% chance it does nothing, and 30% chance it messes up the target’s qi/neili. The numbers will get better the more she studies...but, yes, this technique can be used destructively as well and falls under the Dianxue branch of techniques.

Xun Family Cultivation Technique: Even within the School of Emei, the Xun Family have the own special cultivation technique for drawing in and mastering the flow and control of Qi/Neili throughout every inch of their bodies - a technique that causes their hair to turn blue over time. The blue hair itself does nothing. It's simply proof they've spent years meditating and mastering the Xun Family Cultivation Technique, which is why members of the Xun family are often referred to as the Blue Gods/Demons of Emei. The Xun Family also tend to cultivate with their sword, which lets them build a "bond" with their weapon. Whenever Bihua meditates/cultivates, she does so with Yue Mao in hand.

Extras
Notebook of Medical Knowledge and Herbalism - Prior to leaving Dr. Li Chen, Bihua borrowed stole some of his notebooks which contains his knowledge of various illnesses and how to treat them, as well as various plants and herbal remedies. She's constantly adding to the notes (and her own notebook) as well and hopes the journey will provide a wealth of information for her to add to the collection.

Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, and Excellent Massages - Mentioned before, but Bihua knows all the things a doctor's assistant ought know including how to perform basic acupuncture, several scents that help sooth patients prior to surgery, and gives excellent massages. Though not an expert doctor by any means, she knows how to properly wrap bandages, treat basic illnesses (the normal, not qi/neili related way), compound medicines (if the recipe is given to her), and has her master's notebook to fall back on should the team need it. Her satchel contains various first aid and medical equipment including cloth (bandages), ointments, needles, scalpels, etc.

Beginner Apothecary - Drugs fascinate her and she likes experimenting with various concoctions and studying their effects on the body - she'd often try them herself if she can't be bothered to catch a rodent. She doesn't feel right doing that anyway.

Horses hate her - Maybe it's because of the scent of medicines that cling to her or bodies she sometimes has to deal with, but Bihua's never had a good experience with horses. She never really learned to ride until traveling with Dr. Li (because she never needed to), and, even after learning (kinda), she prefers walking over horse riding.

    DESCRIPTION
Calloused hands and an athletic figure hint towards more militaristic pursuits, but his disciplined manner of sitting neatly and the measured way in which his brush elegantly glides across parchment gives him the air of a scholar. Dark locks tied back neatly with a silk ribbon and the quality of the fabric his clothes are cut from further denote that he’s perhaps a young master from a wealthy family. In rare instances, there’s a certain sharpness in his eyes that reveals a perceptiveness beyond his years, but it disappears in a flash, replaced by a cryptic smile and two malicious crescents that spell nothing but trouble.

Though he wears a thick leather glove on his right arm, he used to forgo such protections in favor of a simple cloth wrap while handling his falcon in his youth, so a multitude of scars caused by sharp talons litter the expanse of his wrist and forearm.
    PERSONALITY
Some claim that the elegance of one’s brushstroke is indicative of the beauty of their inner character. Recipients of the letters penned by Xiang Yiwei’s hand know that each character has been crafted carefully and that the writer has mastered the art of manipulating the way in which ink flows upon paper. However, should they expect him to be an esteemed scholar with a good temperament, disappointment is an inevitability. Despite the refined nature of his calligraphy, the same cannot be said for the state of his poetic artistry or lack thereof. Had his tragic choice of words been the end of his flaws, his shortcomings likely would have elicited little more than a good-natured chuckle. Suffice to say, it doesn’t take long for others to take note of the horribly unserious manner in which the man approaches just about everything.

Xiang Yiwei’s personality can be summed up in a single word: lazy. He appears easy going, laughing off even the harshest of insults and criticisms. Though easily mistaken for possessing a good temper, he simply could not care less for what others have to say. His nonchalance persists even in the face of Yan Muchun’s escort request, preferring to do less than the bare minimum. The man goes as far as pretending to be ill-suited to combat despite being more than capable of holding his ground. His favorite retort for those who speak about honor and moral integrity seems to be “What’s that? Can I eat it?”

Fortunately for his employer, he appears to care a great deal about the payment for the escort mission.
