Aged to Perfection

Muse A (barely out of college) meets Muse B (several years their senior) by chance when they jump into the same cab together during the morning rush. They quickly decide to share the cab and engage in small talk on the way to their destinations, which happen to be on the same side of town. Conversation flows easily and there is a definite physical attraction between the two strangers. When the ride is over for Muse A, Muse B generously offers to pay the whole fare.  In exchange and somewhat on a whim, Muse A offers Muse B their phone number and the pair make plans to meet up sometime soon.

Despite their age difference, Muse A and Muse B have a whirlwind courtship. They laugh over the things they don’t have in common and eagerly introduce each other to what’s popular for their generation: Atari vs PS4, Vinyls vs MP3. They spend every possible moment they can spare with one another. After several weeks, Muse A and Muse B make their relationship official. Muse A invites Muse B to a special dinner at which Muse B will be introduced to Muse A’s parents. When Muse B arrives and Muse A’s mother/father turns around to greet them, they’re stunned to come face-to-face with their same-age business associate/boss.

Muse A - Alana Ryker

Thomas and Catherine Ryker were very notably a respected and genuine couple. They had raised both their two children well and if Alana was honest she couldn't have asked for two better parents, especially after experiencing the overbearing nature of some of her friend's parents whilst being at college. Her mum and dad were always happy to help out but mostly wanted to see her stand on her own two feet and Alana understood that. At twenty-two, they knew that Alana was old enough to make her own decisions and had been extremely supportive when Alana had brought home a girlfriend in her first year at college. Now college was over with and Alana had a degree in psychology, she was also excited about her new relationship with a woman Alana hoped her parents would like.

The two hadn't been together long but since meeting had connected immediately. Alana couldn't remember ever feeling as close to another person before, yes the two of them ran in different circles but it hadn't seemed to matter at all.

Alana sat opposite her parents at a table inside an Italian restaurant her father had picked, it was expensive and Alana felt like it was his way of sending a message to his daughter's girlfriend. Naturally Alana hadn't told them about the age gap, she'd stated the woman was a little older than she was but not by much as she hadn't wanted to worry them, it seemed better for them to find out in person anyhow. She knew they were going to get a shock, possibly even disapprove but she hoped that eventually they would come around as age was hardly a real cause for concern.

"She's late." Catherine noted, checking her watch once again as though to really prove a point to her daughter.

Alana rolled her eyes, but she did check her IPhone once more to see if she'd had a message telling her that her girlfriend had arrived. "By three minutes, please relax mum. She'll be here."

Thomas sighed and took a sip of his wine, having had to leave work an hour early in order to get prepared for the meal. Of course, he hadn't told his boss the real reason for needing to leave early as it hadn't seemed like a good enough reason in his line of work. He fixed his daughter with a look, "Is she texting you when she gets here? If she was hoping to make a good first impression I can't say it's going well."

Muse B- Cosima Wring

Serina and Robert Wring were the hard faced type of people, both very successful and rich, they never had time for their daughter and only ever bothered with her when she earned their time through her own success. At the age of twenty Cosima moved away from the UK to San Francisco America to pursue a PhD in architecture. Since leaving the UK Cosima hasn't seen her parents once and she is now the ripe age of 31, much to her dismay. Most would claim she's still stuck in her collage years when actually she's always been odd but couldn't embrace those off ways around her parents, she's now let loose with long dread locks, a glinting nose ring and patterned outfits.

The audible sound of heels on tile cut through the chatter of the restaurant as she made her way towards the table the waitress was leading her to the table, Cosima had texted the girl prior to her arrival, "I'm sorry for my late arrival I couldn't get out of the office." She pulled the chair out and sat down, crossing her patterned tights clad legs, she lifted her head properly to look at her girlfriends parents. A dry feeling entered her mouth and a cold sweat shivered down her back, Thomas Ryker sat across from her and it suddenly grew very awkward. She'd allowed him to go home early because of a claimed doctors appointment and was now sat across from her employee and was dating his daughter. "Thomas, how lovely it is to see you outside of the office," Cosima smiled at him in an effort to brake the ice and glanced at Alana for some help. But the table was still shrouded in awkwardness despite her efforts to get the conversation going.

So so instead she turned to her girlfriend's mother and smiled offering her hand over the table, "Cosima Wring." She smiled shaking her hand. She may have been older than Alans but at least she was younger than the two of them.

"Alana..." Thomas hissed at his daughter as soon as he caught a look at who was being led over to their table. He shot her a glare, all but ready to get up and leave the table completely before Catherine rested a hand on his arm and whispered for him to calm down. Alana had expected it to be awkward during the first meeting, she had wanted to tell them about Cosima earlier but her father hadn't given her much room to do so. Alana knew that he liked his boss, that the two of them got along fairly well for the most part, but she imagined that there would be some long lasting tension now. "You too," Thomas responded somewhat stiffly, managing a smile before he took a large sip of his wine.

Catherine smiled, much better at masking her surprise than her husband, and shook hands with Cosima. "Catherine Ryker... It's lovely to meet you. Thomas has mentioned you once or twice from the office, my daughter appears to have forgotten to ever mention you by name." Her tone was polite but her underlying annoyance was evident, she eyed Alana to ensure that her daughter had picked up on her point. Alana had always been welcome to date whoever she wanted but her parents had never anticipated whoever Alana wanted would be Thomas' boss, or a woman ten years older than she was.

"Well, this is going better than imagined," Alana commented, a somewhat tentative smile on her face. She leaned over to kiss Cosima's cheek and muttered a quiet greeting, then returned to face her parents. It seemed silly for the whole arrangement to be a big problem, Thomas and Cosima already knew each other and her mother had been saying for a while now that she'd look forward to meeting more of the people that Thomas worked with. Alana chose not to mention any of that, instead she nodded to the wine and picked up a glass for her girlfriend, "Drink?"

Cosima smiked awkwardly and crossed her legs, "please." She mumbled to her girlfriend removing the glass from her hand once filled. The woman took a sip before placing it back on the table, "so now the initial shock is over...." She leaned back in her chair and smiled, "I do hope you don't think of me in a bad way for being your daughters girlfriend." She shifted in her seat and took hold of Alana's hand under the table. Cosima looked at Thomas, "I don't believe that we have actually ever done anything outside of work together, not even with others from work." The only work related things she goes to are for the job such as charity benefits, she'd never stepped into a bar or restaurant with others from work. The dreadlocked woman pursed her lips before she spoke again, "we should do something together, all of is." She was trying to settle Thomas' rustled ego and please his sweet wife.

She continued to try to ignore the fact that she was dating the daughter of someone she worked with, and they were serious so they'd even spent the night together and Alana practically lives at Cosima's house whenever she can. She shifted again and drank from her glass. She'd had sex with his daughter, the woman's stomach flipped and she pushed the thought away. At least he couldn't fire her.

The silence was proving worse than if her parents had gotten up and started screaming, or at least Alana was inclined to think so. Cosima was doing her best to make the situation easier but neither of her parents seemed to be helping with that, Alana had hoped that they would take things much better than they had. It certainly wasn't an ideal situation, Alana would have preferred for Cosima to work far away from where her father did, but things happened in life and compromises had to be made. "That's a great idea," She nodded with a smile, agreeing to Cosima's suggestion of them all doing something together. "Mum has been saying for ages how she really wants to go to the theatre again, we could look into what plays are on at the minute?"

Thomas put down his now empty glass and sighed roughly, "Cosima, I have to be honest and I certainly hope you won't take this the wrong way, but is this really a good idea?" He asked seriously, gesturing between the two women. "I've always been open to Alana seeing who she wants, but I just don't understand how this could possibly work. My daughter is just a kid and you're a successful businesswoman, surely Alana isn't the ideal match?"

Alana took a deep breath and rolled her eyes, "Dad, you're being ridiculous," She told him, quickly coming back around to the idea that perhaps silence would have been better. "Can we just please try and get through this dinner?"
