Nation Building A World of Strife: 1955

Country: Republic of China

Leaders: Chiang Kai-shek Vic-president: Chen Cheng Commander in Chief: Sun Li-jen

Government type: Democratic-Republic

2000px-Flag_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg.png

Following the US's halt at Iwo Jima, their military focus turned back to the Chinese theater. Supplies to the Republic of China increased along with military training and aid in riding the Japanese from the Chinese cost. When the US and Japanese met to sign the Treaty of San-Francisco, the Chinese felt indignation at their not including the Chinese in the Treaty and not making the return of Manchuria a requirement of Japan. This opinion vanished when US aid was critical to the defeat of the PLA at the Battle of the Yangtze River in 1948, in which the 1st Army of China was able to deafened against many waves of Communist forces due to the surprise gifting of 24 T26E3 Pershings. This and the continued support from Allied commanders that served along side the Chinese during the war enable the PLA to be pushed out of China and forced into Mongolia and the Soviet Union.

After the war, the introduction of new internal policies and the popularity of the Chinese leaders by the populous cause the ideals of Communism to become unpopular. A massive modernization project was started in 1949, with the construction of acquit road systems and modern production centers inland as it's primary goal. Resources located in Western China supplied the project, along resource trade from the Japan tho very little in number. Slowly, the wounds of war were healed and China became a economic and resource powerhouse, with major cities like Beiping, Xian, and Lanzhou being massive industrial centers and Nanjing, Shanghai and Taipei containing over 5 million people. The current administration is in it's 2nd term and is going strong, with the fame of Sun Li-jen and Chen Cheng giving them great support. Popularity of Chiang has decreased, as information about him stripping Sun command of the 1st Army during the Chinese Civil War has recently been made public after 7 years of being covered up.

The current military of the Republic is strong, producing the best of American, Soviet and Japanese equipment received during and after the war. The Armored forces of the Republic are primarily made up of either modified Shermans, modified Stuarts, Super Hellcats, M26 Pershings and T-34s. The Air Force of China has many aircraft, a mix of Japanese, American and Soviet, with many Soviet ground attack aircraft in use. They also have a production facility for nuclear weapons located in Taiwan along with an air base. The Chinese navy is currently a small defensive force made up of older american ships decommissioned and sold after WW2. The center of the navy is around the sole remaining member of the Yorktown class and many light carriers bought from the US navy. Over all, despite the many different weapons in us, the Chinese military force are one of the best in Asia and thanks to the current state of the US homeland, a favorite point of deployment for those in the armed forces.

Chinese foreign policy has be focused on keeping peace with their neighbors and trying to stabilize internally. With internal stabilization reached, make groups in the Chinese Senate and populous are pushing for the country to reclaim Manchuria and free the Korea from Japanese occupation. By 1955, support of this idea is widespread but with the possibility of a nuclear bombing from Japan, many of the governmental and military high ups are cautious and wonder if the army could even get by the defenses of the Manchu line. Currently a peaceful return of land is being attempted.

Country: The United Soviet Socialist Republic

Leader: Viktor Antonov

fortean_times_2673_12.jpg

Government Type: Socialist State

Since the assasination of Adolf Hitler and the costly loss at Seelow Heights, the USSR was on the decline. Stalin responded by (unknown to the western world) deflating the army and focusing on economics slowly recovering throughout the late 1940s. Meanwhile, as the economic power of the Soviets returned, as did the military and technological power of 'The Reds'. Several senior members of the Soviet authority were beginning to grow wary of their glorious leader in his old age orchestrating a coup and putting a young, enigmatic, and brutal leader at the head. Now with a might never seen since before the war, Viktor is prepared to destroy Western democracy and help the workers rise up.

Country: The United Kingdom

7377899512_5b2714ebf4_o_d.jpg

Leader: Harry Potter Clement Atlee

Government Type: Parliamentary Monarchy

Overview of Country: The UK is recovering after the second Great War. Cities are slowly being rebuilt, infrastructure is finally recovering. The military continues to contribute to the national GDP as the British War Machine continues to pump out tanks, planes, and ships to counter the new rising threat to her people and allies: communism. Troops remain deployed in Germany and naval fleets are standing by in the Mediterranean.

The British People look to the government to make the best decision for the UK, not the world. Six years of world war has left The People exhausted from war. However, the growing tension between capitalism and communism are beginning to foster a new sense of alliance between England and the US

Everyone has their eyes on Israel and Egypt but Atlee knows that too much focus on foreign affairs will leave his Island Home in worse shape than during the Blitz.

The decision must be made to back the US and her allies or to commit to homeland security and salvation.

It would be great if you could give us some background on how Clement came to be the pm because I think Winston Churchill was still in office and I find it had to believe that he would loose an election now ...

Churchill was given the boot at Yalta (or one of the conferences) and Atlee became his proxy in 1945(I think) and remained PM until the '50s

I think Churchill gets re-elected in the 50s anyway. Is this all good to go?

Country:Greece(Hellenic Republic)

Leader:Prime Minister Themistoklis Sofoulis

Themistoklis_Sofoulis.jpg

Government Type:Parliamentary Republic

Overview of Country:

German forces withdrew on 12 October 1944, and the government in exile returned to Athens. After the German withdrawal, the EAM-ELAS guerrilla army effectively controlled most of Greece, but its leaders were reluctant to take control of the country, as they knew that Soviet premier Joseph Stalin had agreed that Greece would be in the British sphere of influence after the war. Tensions between the British-backed Papandreou and EAM, especially over the issue of disarmament of the various armed groups, led to the resignation of the latter's ministers from the government.

A few days later, on 3 December 1944, a large-scale pro-EAM demonstration in Athens ended in violence and ushered an intense, house-to-house struggle with British and monarchist forces (the Dekemvriana). After three weeks, the Communists were defeated: the Varkiza agreement ended the conflict and disarmed ELAS, and an unstable coalition government was formed. The anti-EAM backlash grew into a full-scale "White Terror", which exacerbated tensions.

Organization and military bases of the "Democratic Army", as well as entry routes to Greece.

The Communists boycotted the March 1946 elections, and on the same day, fighting broke out again. By the end of 1946, the Communist Democratic Army of Greece had been formed, pitted against the governmental National Army, which was backed first by Britain and after 1947 by the United States.

Communist successes in 1947–1948 enabled them to move freely over much of mainland Greece, but with extensive reorganization, the deportation of rural populations and American material support, the National Army was slowly able to regain control over most of the countryside. In 1949, the insurgents suffered a major blow, as Yugoslavia closed its borders following the split between Marshal Josip Broz Tito with the Soviet Union. Finally, in August 1949, the National Army under Marshal Alexander Papagos launched an offensive that forced the remaining insurgents to surrender or flee across the northern border into the territory of Greece's northern Communist neighbors.

The civil war resulted in 100,000 killed and caused catastrophic economic disruption. In addition, at least 25,000 Greeks and an unspecified number of Macedonian Slavs were either voluntarily or forcibly evacuated to Eastern bloc countries, while 700,000 became displaced persons inside the country. Many more emigrated to Australia and other countries.

The postwar settlement ended Greece's territorial expansion, which had begun in 1832. The 1947 Treaty of Paris required Italy to hand over the Dodecanese islands to Greece. These were the last majority-Greek-speaking areas to be united with the Greek state, apart from Cyprus which was a British possession until it became independent in 1960. Greece's ethnic homogeneity was increased by the postwar expulsion of 25,000 Albanians from Epirus (see Cham Albanians). The only significant remaining minorities are the Muslims in Western Thrace (about 100,000) and a small Slavic-speaking minority in the north. Greek nationalists continued to claim southern Albania (which they called Northern Epirus), home of a significant Greek population (about 3%-12% in the whole of Albania[6]), and the Turkish-held islands of Imvros and Tenedos, where there were smaller Greek minorities.
