Realistic or Modern (A not quite so exaggerated) Super Hero RP

Waverly

Nah...
So, we’re planning on getting a sort of classic super hero type roleplay going. We’ll draw inspiration from, but not at all base upon, Marvel and DC but a bit more realistic, and to that we’ll add a faint touch of what you’d from something written by Garth Ennis (See, The Boys for example). It’ll be a detailed game where only somewhat literate people that are willing to put down some long term effort will be accepted.

The Setting (subject to change!)

The year is 2016, and super powers exist.

In fact, there’s always been people with super powers, ever since the ancient days. Back then, such individuals rose above the common man, using their powers for both good and bad. Their feats and deeds often inspired the mythical stories of legend; Gilgamesh, Achilles, Hercules to name a few we still hear about even today.

During the course of history the view of super powers has varied. In medieval Europe for example, people grew vary of individuals with super powers and how dangerous they could potentially become, and as such the powers where banned. Effectively, anyone that showed signs of super powers were accused for being a witch and often prosecuted

This trend spread throughout the world, and these powers became more so a curse than the blessing it had been in ancient history. Up until the modern day, most people that possess super powers (Supes) have been treated like second class citizens, and many have chosen to hide their abilities in an attempt to live normal lives without having to fall under the stigma. For a time, it was almost as if these powers where forgotten.

However, in the mid-1900’s things started going in another direction. With the rise of commercialism came Super Heroes and Super Villains in colorful capes and costumes; an effective way of gaining profit from comic books, movies and merchandise. Suddenly, super powers where something desirable again, something that people awed.

But even if the public often welcome the newfound love for supes, not all governments enjoy their sudden rise in popularity, and in many places super powers are still outlawed, forcing supes to hide their identities when showing their powers in the open. Super powered (and untrained) individuals taking upon them to become vigilantes that try to solve crime and even armed conflicts and wars more often than not mess things up, especially from a bureaucratic point of view. And then there is of course the rise of super powered terrorism that has brought up the question whether or not the armies of the world should start training super humans in order to use their powers in war (something that has been banned ever since international laws first became a thing).

And of course there are still groups that do not agree with this new trend and to all in their power to reverse it, or in other ways eliminate the presence of super humans.

Basic Rules (as of now)

No über powers! This setting is far more realistic than those of DC or Marvel for example. Super powers are never as powerful as those shown by Superman or Silver Surfer. In fact, most super powers are quite weak or even seemingly useless. Only rare individuals (which our characters of course are allowed to be) have potent abilities to become good super heroes by relying on their ability alone.

Super powers are flawed! Any power comes with a flaw that balances the power. In some cases it’s a weakness to a certain element, and sometimes it might be that the power itself is harmful to the user when it is active. Sometimes a flaw doesn’t have to be bound to the power itself. The rule is; don’t make a Mary Sue (Surprised?). Your way to actively work around the flaws in order to utilize your powers are what makes things truly interesting!

Make only one character! Until stated otherwise, we’re going to keep the character count low. To make things easier to handle at the startup.

Villains and heroes are both allowed! Just remember that most supes are more or less ordinary people that stay under the radar and use their powers for their own goals and desires, rather than having grand schemes of world peace/domination.

Costumes are mostly commercial! Just because you are a supe doesn’t mean you wear spandex and capes. However, commercial and publicly known super heroes do so because that’s what sells and gains attention. Even if you’re not playing a public supe, you may of course have a costume that help your character to stay anonymous, or for other practical reasons (armour and so on). Or simply just because it is sort of cool!

Code names are for everyone! Most supes, commercial or not, tend to have or be given code names. This goes along with the fact that most supes try to separate their normal identities from their super human alter egos.

--- --- ---

We’ll be two GM’s, me and @RubyRose . We’ve already got our characters set up and planned, so you can read a (very!) brief description of them below in order to get an idea what we’re looking for.

First there’s a hero sorta guy with the ability to mimic sounds (like even sound waves that are not commonly possible for humans to create or hear). Flaw being that the guy is blind and need to use sound to navigate.

And then there this rogueish, but charming, young lady anti-hero/villain with the ability to levitate/fly. Flaws being the fact that she needs artificial wings to actually use her ability to fly (she cannot properly control it otherwise), and she is a kleptomaniac on top of that. I’ve already got some concept art going for this one, and will be doing similar concepts for all accepted characters.

Glad to hear it :) Any ideas of what to play so far?
I mean, not really. I think having a character with a pretty lame power who tries to be an awesome hero and show off would be hilarious.

That would be so fantastic!

Hah :P Sounds like a thing! Just don't make them too lame ^^

Not too lame. They'll probably have an average superpower. They'll just try to play it off like its way better than it actually is.

Sounds perfect for this! :P It will of course result in trouble for you (and maybe our) characters, but that's the point! :D

This sounds really cool! I immediately thought of a character who can possess/shape/control etc. water, but has a lot of issues like: not being to able to sleep properly, because he often almost chokes on water forming in his throat without him able to control it (which causes him to have Insomnia) and the fact that he needs to keep himself hydrated all the time to stay alive and actually use his power. (So he needs to drink a certain amount of water every hour. Which is also a cause for his Insomnia.) And maybe there also needs to be water nearby to be able to use water as an attack/defensive.

Would that be a cool/acceptable power? :) Or should I tone down his issues a little bit?

I think you're asking the right questions :) As long as you don't go overboard in any direction you'll be fine; not to much power and not to many flaws. Controlling water (or any element) can be a problematic ability if you think you're going to be like Magneto, who can freaking draw the FE-molecules (what are they called in english? Iron?) from people's bodies and stuff like that. I like the idea of having your character choke on water nightly as a flaw, but it doesn't have to mean insomnia or that it happens all the time (they may have come up with ways of avoiding it after many years of dealing with it). And to stay hydrated to use their powers makes sense, so why not go for that as well :) Just don't make it too OP or too crazy to handle and I say it works. :)

Yep, I understand what you mean! Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely keep it in mind! ^^

I love this! I've been looking for a superhero roleplay about unspectacular superheroes (super zeroes?) and this one seems to fit the build. I can't commit quite yet, but if you have a link to the thread I'll be sure to check it out!

When we get the thread up we will tag you guys and let you know :)

Are you still accepting people? I have a character who remembers literally everything he sees, hears or reads. Unfortunately, every six months he loses all knowledge of himself entirely. He has no idea who he is or where he's from.

Right now he's living on the street, swindling people out of their money as a means to survive.

@Tryss

We are still accepting characters!

If you want to go to the thread and start reading through everything it was linked above :)
