Prologue

A demon was what people called the creature from the forest.

An evil spirit from the deepest part of hell who lured both men and women into their grasp.

People disappearing one by one in the forest with an enchanting voice echoing from the depths within. A voice which quickly instilled the fear and anger within the people of Hiraho. A group of men decided to end the terror once and for all but little did they know they would step into the demon’s territory. A fog which thickened the deeper one went, only being able to see due to the flames of their torches. The noises of the animals living within soon disappeared once they entered the middle of it all. Void of anything that was alive. A cold chill running up the men’s spines, pupils dilating due to the adrenaline that was rushing through their veins, let alone their hearts which sped up rapidly. Some unconsciously held their breath for a moment as they felt a presence in this void which was not one of their own.

A voice softly echoed from between the trees with no use of words but mere vocal techniques. Strongly resembling the Nordic chanting for herding animals but was now used on humans. About two started to cower, covering their ears as they did not want to be led on by the voice which slowly started to creep into their heads. Gritting their teeth as they started muttering to themselves in hope they wouldn’t focus on the chanting. The remaining men were hyper alerted with swords ready in their hands. ”Come on out!” One screamed in an attempt to sound threatening yet his voice cracked in the end. Starting to wonder why they had come out here in the first place, it was already cursed anyway. Half of them had started to back away into the direction they came from, breaking the formation which gave them the slightest of chances of winning against this thing. Soon enough, the song came to an end, leaving them once more in utter silence. Even being able to hear their own heartbeat.

As if this was the warning sign, the men who were already at the back, had started running without ever looking back. Golden, piercing eyes could be spotted in the darkness moving at a fast pace. However instead of going for the men who were still standing, they went for those who started running. An easy prey as they were already consumed by their own dread. One could hear the snapping sounds of branches as the creature whisked past. The remaining people could only look and pray for their wellbeing as they heard the deadly screams of their comrades in the distance. That was until one ushered them to move and get out of there now that the demon was occupied. Running as fast as they could even if nature went absolutely silent once more.

Oddly enough the demon did not go after them for as far as they realized. Turning around however, they noticed the exact pair of golden eyes staring at them from behind the oak tree. Quickly making it back inside of the town’s walls.

The corpses of those who tried to run away first were found the next day at the entrance of the forest. There were no life-threatening injuries to be seen on them, more likely scratches and bruises. Their jaws however were dislocated in a way as if the thing had tried to eat something from inside of them. From then on, the forest was off limits for everyone.
