Novel Lyssavirus Fact Sheet
Information courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention & the World Health Organization

This lyssavirus, unlike its relative, rabies, is highly contagious. Transmission of this virus can be achieved in multiple ways:
  • Infected saliva entering the bloodstream (ex: bite of an infected individual)
  • Infected bodily fluids entering the body through mucous membranes: airborne droplets from the cough or sneeze of an infected individual can cause disease if inhaled
  • It is not known whether or not this virus can be transmitted via sexual contact.
  • Contact with items that an infected individual has had contact with (fomites) have resulted in disease in laboratory studies

Progression of symptoms in an infected individual:
  • 1-3 days following exposure: fever, chills, body aches, chills, coughing, sneezing
  • 4-5 days: headache, excessive salivation, insomnia
  • 5-7 days: anxiety, paranoia, aggression, and other behavioral abnormalities
  • 7-21 days: demonstration of aggressive, often deadly, behavior towards others, extreme, insatiable hunger
  • 21-??? days: paralysis, coma, death

Note that the facts provided above may be incomplete or proven inaccurate later on, as vital research on the pathogen is still in progress. For the latest information on the novel lyssavirus, be sure to check the CDC and WHO official websites regularly.

[div class=tag]first

Keep in mind that this is an application that I alone will be considering: I want to see compelling, unique, thoughtfully crafted characters. Roles are not going to be claimed on a first come, first serve basis. Please only apply for one role (I will be the only exception).

That being said, if you would still like to exercise some degree of relationship planning as you create your character, please discuss that on the out of character discussion page for this roleplay. Your thoughts may be of great help to another person, and building cohesion early could add to the strength of your application.

[div class=tag]second

None of the roles are gender-locked (hence all the vague language I used in my descriptions of these groups). Keep in mind that families don’t necessarily have to be biological and that relationships don’t have to be heterosexual.

[div class=tag]third

Realism. People that have made it this far have not likely done so completely unscathed: likely they may have developed an illness, mental or physical, acquired scars, phobias, and/or certain triggers along the way.

[div class=tag]fourth[/div]
Diversity. The world we all share is certainly not homogenous, and pandemics don’t discriminate or favor one type of person more than another. Diversity of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, places of national origin, sexuality, and gender identity would be much appreciated and more reflective of the current state of the world.

If you do choose to create a character with a racial or ethnic background different than your own, please do so in a respectful, affirming way: avoid relying on cliches and stereotypes to craft your persona. This is especially applicable to minority and marginalized identities.

[div class=tag]fifth[/div]
Given the circumstances that each character has lived through, one can imagine that unique events they’ve experienced over the course of their lives have had a tremendous impact on the outcomes of their personality, habits, fears, dreams, etc. A well-developed history would certainly be an interesting read and build to the strength of your application.

the family
status: 4/5 open.
A rare nuclear family in the midst of this chaos, they have managed to stay together despite all odds, holding out in a remote rural ranch that was previously owned by an elder member of the family. This group consists of two parental figures and two children. The parents have seen the entirety of the lyssavirus situation from its inception, and their children may have some childhood memories of the first major events. Of course, no family is ever perfect, especially with the stress of post-apocalyptic life manifesting all too often, but they would quite literally do anything for each other.

the trio
status: 3/3 open.
This best friend trio assembled in the years following the collapse of government, and the bond they share is unbreakably deep: constantly relying on each other for survival has a way of forming lasting, trusting relationships. These three have helped each other with illness and injury, grief and heartbreak, and, most importantly, they've found ways to keep the air light despite all that's happened.

the pair
status: 1/2 open.
A stranger in desperate need and an exceptionally compassionate stranger coincidentally crossed paths and have remained together for only a short amount of time. One feels a tremendous debt towards the other. The other simply had the desire to help. That being said though, there is still much to be discovered, and the trust between the two is low while suspicion and doubt remain high.

the loner
status: 1/1 open.
Almost always a solitary figure, this person is used to extended periods of isolation: they have learned that during times like these, they are they only thing they can rely on. Having been scorned and hurt by people in the past, their faith in humanity is almost entirely gone, and they are very hesitant to put any kind of trust in anyone.

[div class=tag]Name
Josephine Dennis-Farrow.
[div class=tag]Nickname[/div] In the past, she responded to "Doc," but now she mostly hears "Josie" or "Jo" from her wife. (And, of course, she goes by "Mom")
[div class=tag]Age[/div] 61 years old (8/12, a Leo).
[div class=tag]Ethnicity[/div] Black American.
[div class=tag]Gender[/div] Cisgender female.
[div class=tag]Sexuality[/div] Homosexual.
[div class=tag]Face claim[/div] Angela Bassett. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents02"]
[div class=tag]Height
5'7".
[div class=tag]Weight[/div] Just under 140 lbs.
[div class=tag]Build[/div] Slim and hard-bodied, from countless days on the run and usually less than enough to eat..
[div class=tag]Hair[/div] Dark brown in color, nearly black, with the occasional thin streak of grey or white cutting through the dark. Its texture is curly, but in the frizzy kind of way, not so much tame, regular ringlets. It reaches her shoulders, but she usually keeps it tied back and out of the way.
[div class=tag]Eyes.[/div] Dark brown. They carry a certain sharpness and intensity that can be felt by whoever holds her gaze for long enough. Certainly the embodiment of a piercing gaze.
[div class=tag]Skin.[/div] Has gorgeous skin for her age, showing relatively few wrinkles and sun spots. She has a collection of small scars on her remaining hand and fingers from those countless, meaningless little injuries acquired from working with your hands often.
[div class=tag]Distinguishing features.[/div] Her eyes and facial features are as striking as they are intense. It’s also hard to miss the part of her arm that’s missing.
[div class=tag]Wardrobe[/div] She rotates between a few pairs of dark wash jeans and long-sleeved shirts, but always wears her trusty pair of weatherproof Chelsea boots. She also always wears her gold wedding band on her left ring finger, rarely ever taking it off. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents03"]
[div class=tag]Virtues
Although she was born naturally outgoing, her time in the army brought a more commanding, assertive side out of her. Josephine is comfortable giving orders and taking charge in any situation, no matter how trivial it may be: she always has a vision for the results she wants, and when she's right, everything works out wonderfully. Josephine doesn't take no for an answer, and nothing is impossible when she sets her mind to it. She's also incredibly nurturing and attentive as a partner and mother, and incredibly self-sacrificing when the time calls for it.
  • Tenacious
  • Fiercely protective of her loved ones
  • Assertive
  • Confident, but not arrogant
  • Self-sacrificing and altruistic
  • A visionary

[div class=tag]Vices[/div] Josephine is the first to admit that she's intense, and that can be immensely off-putting. Even if she is self-aware, her strong personality does lend itself to her asserting herself almost nonstop: she's opinionated, perhaps too honest, and does not tolerate much challenge to the ideas she has. Even if these emotions do truly come from a place of love, it can be easy to think of her as just being stubborn or difficult for the sake of her pride.
  • Often brutally honest
  • Can be obstinate
  • Quick to anger
  • Inflexible
  • Self-righteous
  • Distrusting and pessimistic of others

[div class=tag]Fears[/div] Losing her wife or children, failing to protect her family, letting the wrong people take advantage of her wife's kindness, water (she was never the strongest swimmer, and now missing part of her arm complicates the situation more).
[div class=tag]Ailments.[/div] Her right arm from about halfway up her forearm is missing due to an emergency amputation. Although she lost it years ago, it still aches and causes her pain from time to time. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents04"]
[div class=tag]Inventory
  • An ancient leather wallet, containing mostly dated photos of the kids as children and wedding pictures.
  • Bottle of 100% alcohol
  • Athletic tape, gauze, and a pair of scissors
  • Pistol and several boxes of ammunition
  • Swiss Army knife
  • A small pocket knife
  • A rosary

[div class=tag]Special skills[/div] As a former army doctor, Josephine has extensive medical knowledge and skills that she can apply to both people and animals on the ranch. Used to working under pressure and with limited resources, she's proved herself invaluable countless times since the pandemic began. Even though her ability to work with her hands has been somewhat reduced, she is still able to administer excellent care when needed--she just may have to recruit one of her less squeamish children to help.

[div class=tag]Backstory.[/div] Josephine was born the oldest of five siblings in Detroit, Michigan. A stellar student, she attended West Point as a first generation, low income college student, and discovered a passion for healthcare, biology, and medicine during her undergraduate studies. After taking the MCAT exam and applying to medical school, she enlisted in the army and served for two years so they would pay her tuition. Of course, though, she discovered she loved the rigor and discipline of military life, and continued to serve after she received her MD.

While she was stationed in Germany, she met the woman who would later become her wife, Charlotte. The two fell hard and fast for each other, quickly realizing they were each other's better half and soul mate. They married several years later, and Josephine slowly began pulling back from the army and requesting more domestic duties so she could focus on her marriage and begin raising a family. [Children]

The young family enjoyed only a couple years of bliss before the pandemic began. At the time, they lived in Denver, Colorado, where fortunately, the situation was not as dangerous or frightening as some of the more populated cities in the US. They set their goal on a family property owned in rural Southern Idaho--a beautiful and remote stretch of land that had the capability to be self-sufficient, stocked with its own generators, water supply, and plenty of property to grow food and raise animals. They just had to make it there.

Traveling proved the most dangerous and taxing part in this process. Most major highways soon proved impassible, gas became extremely difficult to come by, and medical emergencies (a graze from the mouth of an infected person resulted in Josephine hacking her own hand off with an axe) delayed their arrival greatly. The group of five made it, though, and worked tirelessly to establish the family ranch as a rare safe haven from the rest of the world. And she is hellbent on protecting that for her wife and children, at any cost. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents05"]

Being born into an unforgiving, terrifying world has unique ways of shaping a person. In River's case, the constant running, scavenging, and fighting molded him into a young man that is mature beyond his years: he maintains a calm and collected air no matter the situation, because he's seen the devastating results of ill-timed panic too many times. It's made him sharp and attentive, and more than capable of taking care of himself.
  • An excellent survivalist
  • Resourceful
  • Patient
  • Calm
  • Hardy
  • Adaptable
  • Fearless

[div class=tag]Vices[/div] At the same time, however, the same circumstances that made him an ideal survivor have also made him rough around the edges, especially socially. The people who raised him certainly weren't positive role models, either, often encouraging and rewarding toxic masculine behavior. River is behaviorally naive in the sense that he hasn't been in a lot of different types of social situations with different people, so his perception of what is appropriate isn't often accurate or correct. He also curses like a sailor.
  • Uncouth
  • Aggressive
  • Headstrong
  • Prone to snap and lash out
  • Suspicious of others

[div class=tag]Fears[/div] Harbors a deep, deep distrust of strangers, the dark, getting into a situation where he can't protect himself, getting hurt, and being perceived as weak or not 'masculine enough' by others.
[div class=tag]Ailments[/div] Likely has broken or fractured some of his fingers at some point, and they haven't had the chance to heal properly, causing somewhat chronic minor pain. Has a weak ankle that he's prone to sprain. Definitely has post-traumatic stress disorder, but knows next to nothing about its symptoms or effects. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents04"]
[div class=tag]Inventory
  • Hard leather flask filled with bourbon and a plastic bag filled with dried mushrooms
  • A Polaroid photo of a smiling brunette woman, with "I'm sorry I can't be with you, but I love you" written in pen on the back. He bears a resemblance to her.
  • Louisville slugger baseball bat
  • A pack of cigarettes
  • Crowbar
  • Machete
  • A revolver, not much ammunition
  • Rock climbing rope
  • Netting

[div class=tag]Special skills[/div] He’s a true jack of all trades when it comes to combat and survival, having done it or observed it for literally his entire life. He’s especially adept at creating traps for fish, rodents, and even deer. He’s also an excellent distance runner and can maintain a fast pace for miles, if needed.

[div class=tag]Backstory[/div] Was born to a mother who passed away a short time before or after his birth for reasons unknown. Fortunately, he was quickly found and taken in before anything could happen by a group of former felons who formed a group prior to escaping prison. (They named him after the closest thing nearby, a river, and took the last name of the man who discovered him.) The men were exceptionally kind to him and raised him somewhat unconventionally, with each member of the group playing a role in parenting and discipline as they traveled and survived. Living with these types of people, however, exposed him to lots of violence and toxic masculine behavior at a young age that he later began to emulate, knowing nothing better.

By the time he was a teenager, he was fully running with the wolves. River had to grow up quickly, and when he had a growth spurt, he could now actually participate in the intimidation, the robberies, the looting, and the scavenging with the rest of them. He quickly got used to using his size as leverage and using violence to get exactly what he wanted.

Living with that kind of group has its consequences, though. Despite the camaraderie, he endured lots of verbal and occasional physical abuse as a young boy, making the ignorant little mistakes that young children tend to make. When other groups would retaliate back, River would endure the same punishment (and once or twice, torture) that the rest would. He was sexually assaulted on two occasions.

Slowly but surely, he lived to see the group size dwindle to just him for a various number of reasons: the lyssavirus, tuberculosis flare-ups, deadly fights with each other, freak accidents, firefights with others. The deaths disturbed him deeply at first, but as with all of the other things he’d seen and done, River normalized it, internalizing it as just another normal part of life. [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents03" style="display: none;"][div class=tabcontainer][div class=tab3title]positive traits.[/div] [div class=tab3persona style="top: 23px;"][div class=tab3container]Algernon is a very competent individual who is capable of taking care of not only himself, but others. Despite his bristly appearance, he has a strong moral compass that, while a little skewed, is something that he cares about very deeply. He is dedicated to his work as a surgeon. He is incredibly hard to shake and is nearly impossible to truly intimidate; thus, he makes a good wrangler for wild children and people who need someone to hold their child leash. His life experience also means that he's particularly wise, though you'd be hard pressed to get any of that information out of him. Algernon was also once a father of two, and is well-versed in handling and caring for children. TL,DR: » responsible, dependable » (mostly) moral, looks after others » experienced and knowledgeable » strong paternal instincts » confident but not arrogant[/div][/div] [div class=tab3title style="top: 145px;"]negative traits.[/div] [div class=tab3persona style="top: 61px;"][div class=tab3container]As competent as Algernon is, he's also known to be difficult to work with. While he isn't arrogant, he is very rough around the edges, very much a believe in tough love and letting people figure things out for themselves before he steps in to mediate. The only exception to this is medical knowledge - he's very much the type to do things himself because he doesn't trust others to get it done to his high standards. He is tough, but fair. It is also readily apparent that he has drinking issues. Algernon is easily pissed off as well. He is, however, incredibly self-aware of most of these. He mostly sees no reason to change himself - both to keep others away from his trainwreck of a person, and because he's just generally a low sympathy person. Algernon is sensitive after his previous marriage, and tends to react poorly to women hitting on him; it pisses him off a lot, and he is prone to overcompensation by being incredibly rude in return. TL,DR: » asshole, very grumpy » holds others to very high standards » heavy drinker » short temper » won't take advice, won't accept help[/div][/div] [div class=tab3title style="top: 290px;"]special skills.[/div] [div class=tab3persona style="top: 99px;"][div class=tab3container]First and foremost, Algernon is a literal genius - he is extremely well-versed in both engineering and medicine, having taken classes for engineering in a private school before the viral outbreak and self-taught medicine for nearly thirty years. He is a skilled surgeon who uses his abilities to often treat others for supplies and board. He's also very competent and sure of himself without leading to arrogance; he simply has faith in his own abilities. Algernon is also physically strong despite his short stature; though he isn't particularly blessed with stamina, he can take one hell of a beating. TL,DR: » Intelligent; specifically medical/engineering knowledge » His medical knowledge and ability to create prosthesis also means he has excellent anatomical knowledge that can (kind-of) also be applied to animals » physical strength and hardiness » a doctor; can perform surgery and construct prosthetic » mental fortitude[/div][/div][/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents04" style="display: none;"][div class=tabcontainer][div class=tab4history][div class=tab4container]Algernon Baker's younger years were largely unremarkable aside from a blooming intelligence. Attending a private academy that made use of his talents to let him pursue engineering lead him to meet his eventual wife Val, a sharp redhead with an even sharper tongue. It was a fast romance that Algernon had never been particular invested in - at least not until he received the news that he was going to be a father. Tied down by obligation, they married, and Algernon became the father of two twins; Roe and Anna. The marriage wasn't particularly good - Val was testy, unstable at best and unpleasant at worst - but Algernon cared for both of his children deeply. At a young age, Roe developed a rare degenerative disease that caused his body to eat away at itself. Algernon spent most of his free time in hospitals and doctors appointments. But the doctors had no idea what was wrong with him. All there was to do was subject the little boy to dozens of tests that made him miserable. Seeing his son like that, it broke something in him. These doctors, the people responsible for helping others, were doing nothing but causing more suffering to his son. In the dead of night, Algernon began to self-teach himself medicine so that perhaps one day he would get to help his son. Took him to appointments less, treated him at home, combined the medical information he had with his engineering degree to try and alter and manufacture prosthesis for him. During this time, he and his wife divorced and he took the kids. Their relationship had always been volatile, and his marriage had lead to him realizing that he was gay, rather than just having a low interest in other people. It was something that he and Val fought over regularly; since then, he's been sensitive to the idea of someone trying to "make" him straight. Though Algernon prefers to not be particularly open about himself, he is very firm in his sexuality and will shut down anything he sees as encroaching upon him with no regrets. This did not continue for long. When the virus hit, it devastated the area he was living in. Some of the worst places hit were hospitals; the elderly and children without the immune systems to combat the virus. It only took months before Algernon lost both of his children to it. He lost a part of himself, that day, drowned himself in brandy and never resurfaced. He carries incredibly survivor's guilt, still mourning the death of the twins. Since then, he's been a wanderer - going where he was needed and using his skills to barter when coming across rare encampments of humans. He usually tends to stay with others out of necessity; both them and him. (Background will be expanded upon when casting is chosen! I'd just like to collaborate it with whoever the other half of the pair is.)[/div][/div] [div class=tab4pic]

H I S T O R Y
biography :
charlotte was born the youngest child and only girl of three children to a well off family in lille, france. ever since childhood, lotte's been a daydreamer. she flitted from activity to activity, treating reality as secondary to all of her many whimsies. she was fascinated by all things: dance, art, astrology, fashion. though she did not excel in school, but her popularity and curiosity allowed her an abundance of fun, fanciful life experiences.

though she was having fun drifting through life, she felt as though she had a part of herself missing. she attempted to fill her peculiar spiritual hole with any number of fancies: clothes, drink, sex, drugs, but none seemed to do the trick. in some cinematic attempt to find herself, she found her hole filled in a way she hadn't quite expected. she was backpacking through germany, sightseeing, giggling, when she experiences for herself a concept she thought to be a myth: love at first sight.

the woman in question was a foreigner, american, lean, with sharp eyes and rugged beauty. charlotte was enamored immediately. the two spent a near sinful amount of time together, so enthralled by each other's company the entire outside world disappeared. josephine, (the foreigner in question), tethered the effervescent charlie down to the terra for the first time in her life. it was fate.

their courtship was short, engagement long, marriage ceremony small and intimate. charlotte trailed josie's army career patiently, capable of moving freely with her profession as a doula. as josephine slowly retracted to more domestic duties, the two started a family, and things were lovely for a time. as the pandemic arrived and swelled, there was hushed, worried talk as to how to protect the life they had built. it reached a point of no others options. the trek began. it was long and arduous, those two facts only increased by the company of young children and josephine's accident, but they made do. charlotte is proud of the love and safety which surrounds her. though the world may fall apart around her, she is determined to keep those she loves away from harm.

[div class=block]weight[/div] 170 lb (77kg)
[div class=block]build[/div] Andrew is lean, muscular and has an athletic build with broad shoulders. His body is toned and he doesn't have a lot of excess body fat. Tending to the farm animals and crops involves a lot of daily manual labor through which he stays in shape.
[div class=block]hair[/div] He has straight, jet black hair that is cut short and is easy to maintain. His hair is very thick and dense.
[div class=block]eyes[/div] Deep, dark brown eyes framed by short black lashes. He has mono eyelids. His left eye sometimes twitches when he's nervous or stressed.
[div class=block]skin[/div] He has a tan complexion. There are multiple smaller scars all over his body, the biggest one running from his elbow to his wrist on his right arm.
Fine wrinkles and creases, which are definitely noticeable when closely looked at, adorn his face around his eyes, mouth and in between his eyebrows.
He likes to keep his face clean-shaven or leave just a bit of stubble.
[div class=block]distinguishing features[/div] He has a distinctive face with strong, angular features, a defined jawline and prominent cheekbones. His face is fairly symmetrical, except for his slightly crooked nose. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is not one to hide his emotions. He couldn't, even if he wanted to. Whatever emotion he is feeling can easily be read from his face.
He always maintains a good posture.
He walks with heavy footsteps.
[div class=block]wardrobe[/div] Dresses in a simple, practical manner, sporting flannels or t-shirts and sweaters in basic colors, usually paired with blue jeans. Many of his clothes used to belong to his late grandfather, the previous owner of the farm, but they're still in a good condition. They might look a bit dated, but that doesn't bother him, as long as they're functional. When it comes to footwear, his go-to is a pair of sturdy, steel toe leather boots.

In light of this, he has done some things he isn't proud of for their sake. But he would do it all over again if he had to. He's very protective of them, especially considering that his mothers aren't getting any younger. Not that they aren't still capable of holding their own, though, he knows full well not to underestimate them. But being the only male in the household as well as being the oldest sibling adds to the responsibility he feels to always be dependable and reliable. He loves each of his family members dearly and would give his own life for them in a heartbeat. He can't imagine life without them as he's never been away from them. His dependence on them might be seen as borderline unhealthy, but who's to say when that's what's been keeping him and them alive up until now?

The circumstances of his life have shaped him into someone that is inherently distrustful of strangers, to the point of being cold and abrasive to people he deems undeserving of his trust. But he still actively tries to work against this and makes an effort to be polite and friendly if a person doesn't seem to present any danger. He knows that not everyone is as fortunate as his family to have made it to this point and that not everyone is as well off as they are, so it would be nothing short of selfish to deny help to anyone who finds their way to them.
Family dinners are the most cherished part of his day. He loves the conversations they have.
He has a bit of a sentimental attachment to the farm itself, it seems to have a personality of its own.
Some of his habits and behavioral patterns are overly compulsive, since he feels like he has to be in control of everything at all times and stay on top of things, not letting anything slip his attention.

He cries sometimes, but dislikes doing so in front of others. Many nights, he has difficulty getting to sleep and he's usually the last to go to bed.
Andrew is very talkative and outspoken.
He curses often and it has become so ingrained into his vocabulary that he barely even notices it anymore.
His brain can't always keep up with his mouth and so he sometimes speaks without thinking first, which he often comes to regret.
He jokes around with his family a lot, in a concious effort to brighten the mood and make even difficult situations easier to bear.
He thinks it's important to express his love and gratitude to them often. So he says "I love you", "Thank you" and "I'm sorry" - and means it. He values communication highly.
He closely follows the values and virtues instilled upon him by his parents, like tenacity, honesty, integrity and honor.
He is a man of principle, he holds on to his ideals tight and stands by them, which in and of itself is a good thing, but unfortunately doesn't leave a lot of room for him to hear out others' opinions and take different views into consideration.
When in an argument, he doesn't let up easily and is often too stubborn and too sure of himself.
In this vein, he's very confident in himself and his abilities, sometimes even too much so, which can lead to him overestimating himself.
Andrew doesn't like it when someone beats around the bush, he's very straightforward. Also, he prides himself on being very honest and tells the truth, or what he believes to be the truth, no matter what, even if it results in hurt feelings. He's an open book. The downside of this is that he's a terrible liar: stammering, looking away, scratching his neck, the whole nine yards.
Another of his flaws is that he can be short-tempered and is easily annoyed when something or someone is getting on his nerves.

- temperamental

[div class=block]fears[/div] His biggest fear is undoubtedly that something bad happens to one of his family members, a fear that unfortunately feels all-too-real and manifests itself in him often acting overly protective or self-sacrificing.

Although he hasn't really shared this fear with anyone before, he's also petrified of dying, both of the process itself and of the uncertainty of whatever may come afterwards. But above all, he's afraid of what might happen to his loved ones after he dies since he won't be around to protect them anymore.
Knowing that the virus can be transmitted by simply touching a surface that is contaminated, he's paranoid about that happening. He's prone to overthinking things like that and freaking himself out.

[div class=block]ailments[/div] Having shot firearms for pretty much his entire life, he now suffers from tinnitus (permanent ringing in his ears) and is partially deaf in one ear. And having broken his nose a couple of years ago, it now is ever so slightly crooked and he has a deviated septum which causes him to have difficulty breathing from time to time and only allows him to be able to sleep with multiple pillows stacked on top of each other so that his head rests at a higher level than his body. He snores loudly, much to the chagrin of the rest of his family.

Being exposed to fear and stress regularly has mentally worn him down and taken its toll on him, making him more paranoid, irritable and nervous.

[div class=block]special skills[/div] - He's a very good marksman, as he has spent a lot of time honing this skill since he was a teenager. He can hit targets with high accuracy from a great distance. He has a steady hand.
- Quick reflexes
- Physical strength
- He's very creative and skilled at tinkering. He can create something useful out of nothing but scraps.
He's always the one to fix creaky floorboards, faulty wiring and leaks in the roof or in the pipe under the sink.
He constantly finds new ways to improve upon the structures and systems they have in place on the farm.
- Additionally, he often heads out whenever they're short on resources. Thankfully, this doesn't happen all too often, only about twice a year, since the farm provides them with everything they need to survive.
- He can whistle with his fingers.

[div class=block]backstory[/div] Andrew doesn't know much about his biological parents, other than that his mother was Korean and his father was Caucasian, that his mother was fairly young when she had him and his father was nowhere to be found at the time of his birth, and lastly that she gave him up for adoption immediately after she gave birth all alone in the hospital room.

What he doesn't know is that despite the nurse's recommendation against it, she wanted to hold her baby just once and despite him being sticky and wrinkly and covered in blood, she couldn't help but marvel at how beautiful he was. What he doesn't and will never know is that she sobbed while he cried, too, she sobbed with him pressed against her chest and when he fell asleep, all small and vulnerable, she knew that she had to give him up if she wanted what was best for him, that she couldn't possibly give him the life that she wanted for him. But the couple that she chose to take care of him could.

Those people were Charlotte and Josephine Dennis-Farrow. And for the next couple of years, he lived exactly the kind of life his birth mother had envisioned for him, in a nice, big house in Colorado, with a garden to play and roam around in freely. He remembers the way the sunlight flooded his parents' bedroom through the grand windows and doused everything in golden honey warmth, nestling itself into every nook and corner and the laughter that filled the remaining space when he jumped onto their bed early on Sunday mornings.
Those years of pure bliss were short-lived, but he deeply cherishes what little memory he has of them.
It almost felt like by letting them have something so amazing, the universe was trying to somehow make up for what was to come.
When the outbreak began, his parents did well at protecting their children from the horrors of the world's ever worsening state for as long as they could.
But there was no more pretending that everything was fine when he was pulled out of kindergarten, or when he was loaded into the family car that was packed to the brim with their belongings. There was even stuff up on the roof of the car! Which Andrew found very funny. Almost as funny as teasing his sister who was cramped on the backseat with him, and as playing "I spy with my little eye". He always said blue and always meant the sky and his little sister got really worked up about it and it never got old.

He didn't really feel like laughing anymore when they had settled in on the farm, their new home, and he was reprimanded harshly for going out to explore on his own. His mommies had always been strict, firm, but they had never shouted at him like that.
Or when he saw the one-legged man at the edge of the woods from where he was standing on the porch, he only caught a glimpse of him, and even as an almost eight year old child he realised that something was wrong about the way the man moved and the sounds he made, the deep, guttural bellows that had nothing human about them and that could be heard from so far away, from all the way across their fields and from beyond their fence.
Or when his mother lost her arm, which reminded him of that one-legged man, and then she explained that she did that to herself so she wouldn't become like him in a completely different way.
And that's when he understood.

Years passed by and he grew accustomed to the wails of the infected, just as much as he grew accustomed to the sound of gunshots from outside, clearly audible despite him hiding underneath his duvet and covering his ears.
He learned to come to terms with and live with these circumstances by telling himself that it could always be worse.
He's insanely grateful now to his parents for protecting his sister and him and getting them through all of that, which, in reteospect, seems like a nearly impossible task.
But as a teenager he went through a difficult phase that most young people go through, with the added stress of trying to cope with the world he lived in, and he directed all of the big, difficult emotions towards his family, took his frustration and fear out on them, because there was no one else to take it out on, causing a bunch of arguments and heartbreak.
He regrets that behavior to this day, even though it was short-lived and he's pretty sure none of his family members hold it against him.

As time went on, Andrew tried to call to mind his mantra - that things could always be worse - whenever something went awry.
Like the multiple times he escaped death by a hair's breadth, and the times they were attacked, be it by humans or non-humans, and time and time again it looked like there was no way to win that battle, or when his sister went blind in one eye.
And finally, when he dealt with the men who did that to her, shot one of them in the leg and then beat the other to a bloody pulp in a blind rage until his knuckles were sore and then just left them there to rush home with his sister. He never found out what happened to them and he couldn't sleep or look at himself in the mirror for days afterwards.
Of course he didn't get off unscathed, he carried away a black eye, a broken rib and a broken nose, and last but not least, a massive amount of guilt.
But no matter what happened, they somehow always got through it, as a family, and he always felt thankful that at least all four them were still alive and mostly well.

And it was just the four of them for a long time, until they took in a young teenage girl who had lost everything and who reminded him a lot of himself when he was that age.
It took all of them some getting used to, but when he warmed up to her, he saw her as a part of the family just as much as everybody else and they grew very close. [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div] [/div]

[div class=tag]special skills.[/div]
dallas' biggest advantage from being born into this world during the outbreak is that she had to learn how to survive right from birth. she is small which allows her to crawl through spaces that others can't. nimble, she scales trees and is able to be a lookout for her family.
[div class=tag]backstory.[/div]
dallas was born in a tent on a beautiful summer night. it was the first night in a long time where her birth parents, david and melissa, knew what sheer happiness was. having a baby in the midst of a pandemic was no easy task, they had a lot of difficulty moving from place to place with a newborn but somehow they made it work.

her parents wanted a normal life so badly that they tried to make one. when dallas was six she became incredibly sick but not in the way that many would have imagined. david searched for a doctor and finally after eight long days of looking the family found dr. peters who ultimately diagnosed dallas with type one diabetes.

archie had been born two years after dallas' diagnosis. a healthy, beautiful baby brother who brought a whole new purpose to dallas' life. it was her job to take care of him while her mother and father were out searching for supplies. on a night run, david and melissa were killed by a group of men. they were stripped of everything that had on them. not long after their death, archie became ill and passed within the same year.

by the time dallas was ten she had managed to learn how to survive on her own. many groups tried to take her in but she would run from them, afraid that if she got close they would die as well. it wasn't until she was eleven when josephine and charlotte had found her. dallas had run out of her insulin supply and had been out looking for more in a local pharmacy when she had fainted. when she awoke josephine and charlotte had already taken her back to their camp and she has been there ever since.

[div class=tag]eyes:[/div] dark amber-brown, ringed in near black around the irises.

[div class=tag]skin:[/div] bronze and littered with moles, light freckles and odd faded acne scars; as indiscriminately damaged as any other survivor, but particularly across the side of his right calf, left shredded with pale scar tissue.

[div class=tag]dist. features:[/div] the wild hair, the pendants, the torn earlobe.

[div class=tag]wardrobe:[/div]a haphazard collection of tank tops and Adidas sweatpants stuffed into heavy black boots, often graced with a short-sleeved floral shirt more often lacking the necessary buttons to keep it closed than not. The apocalypse may have killed fashion first, but Alex’s existence continues to piss on its grave. Often thankfully hidden beneath his hooded biker jacket and a white baseball cap.
[/div][/div] [div class="textcontainer tabsContent tabsContent2" style="display:none;"][div class=text] [div class=tag]virtues:[/div] Bruisingly confident and razor-sharp. Little escapes his notice, for good or for ill, and alexander is entirely unafraid of making his resulting opinions known. He’s tirelessly energetic, shameless, bold, playful and tactile in his affections; he could socialise with a brick wall, and it’s not often immediately obvious how superficial these open book pages really are. His loyalties come in far deeper shades, however, and his morality is quick to shows it’s fierce, ugly shade of grey when it comes to protecting his people. It won’t be in a fit of temper, either; by all means, the violence will be as nonchalant as he can stand to make it. It’s rarely as convincing as would like. Still - he’s great with kids, and, somehow, still something of a battered optimist in this hostile reality. The endless, droll cheeriness may just be a coping mechanism, but it has seen it’s own odd moments of actual feeling. That blasé smile is never gone for long, and neither is the chat and thoughtless flirtation - simply habit, just a mind-game to stave off tedium - that follows close behind. He’s a sucker for the distraction of anything fun, any kind of distraction, really, and if he can’t find it, he’ll damn well make it with all the bored, wanton thrill-seeking of an intelligent puppy left alone in the house for that little bit too long.

[div class=tag]vices:[/div] Flippant, provocative and often bordering on mildly insulting, it’s often hard to tell whether Alexander is just unaware of when his humour goes that little bit too far, or whether he simply does not care. He’s difficult to read, unpredictable in his amusements, easily bored, full of his rough, teasing games one moment and slipping offhand a stinging remark the next. the mood behind the perpetual smile can change on a dime and and he will not deign to explain why. But he doesn’t tend to have much of a clue, either - the emotional intelligence round here is not exactly breathtaking. He takes most things as some kind of joke, anyway. Occasionally rather childish, if not passive aggressive, his banter will simply take on a barbed, caustic edge instead of him actually confronting someone. The ability to directly express his emotional state, face-to-face, has never been something he’s quite been able to manage. Vaguely conflict-averse as he may be, AJ knows where to press where it hurts, and it’s knowledge he’s often unafraid to weaponise. He can be a smilingly snide nightmare, sometimes, prone to this kind of underhanded retaliation whenever he feels cornered, and his apparent inability to look at things head on with the sobriety they deserve can quickly start to grate.

[div class=tag]fears:[/div] has a deep, subconscious fear of being alone. Slightly claustrophobic. scared of losing the use of any of his limbs or senses and becoming a liability, and fears never being forgiven for what he once did.

> eyesight. Alexander is longsighted, and opticians aren’t exactly abundant out in the apocalypse. Struggles with close-up reading of all but comically large print.

[div class=tag]history:[/div] The first memory Alex can recall is of the water’s edge. Not that he ever knew the name of it, of course - both him and the rest of the tightly patchworked scavenger community that called the bow of it’s eastern bank their home only ever referred to it as the river. Apt, if not exactly inspiring, and it was there that he was raised alongside his year-younger sister Maria. They were a close pair if ever there was one - distinct in the ranking of their father’s opinion, perhaps, but the blunt favour she received never quite managed to split them. He’d always keep a smile for her despite the bloody lips and swollen eyes he’d occasionally wake with in the morning. Their father was a rational man, incredibly clever yet sparingly harsh in discipline, a born survivor for his children and hell-bent to teach them the same. Alex learnt quick and hard to never second guess him in the open. His frustration soon found its release through the double edge of his tongue instead - perhaps it was simply fear of his blistering reproach, his father’s pained disappointment that stayed his real thoughts - but if there was one thing that they could draw truce on it was, undoubtedly, Maria. It was for her that he could ingrain in himself that he would grin and bear it, and grin and bear it he quite literally did. He couldn’t help but hold close the notions of the breadth of his shoulders taking it what they had to so hers would not, though hers were oftentimes frankly the more capable. He could hide from her the grief it all caused him. It’s the little comforts.

Fishing was what kept them all alive, for the most part. A few of them occasionally left to trade with the outside world, never gone for too long or too far, but it was from here that his father speculated the virus first came from. It ripped through the camp in a matter of days. Maria was one of the first to succumb, quickly isolated in one of the furthest huts, but the aggression began to sink in quickly. It came on a night little over two weeks after the symptoms began to show that she broke from the holding, unseen under the lax security their father had neglected to tighten, and set upon the closest people she could find. The screams and the torches had barely begun to rise before she made it to the hut she had once shared with them. Alex woke only to their father struggling to hold her, refusing to hurt the daughter he saw in the image of his wife, not quite comprehending that his own child would truly want to sink her teeth into his neck, that she wasn’t just ill. She did, anyhow. Alex learnt in those few moments later what it really was to fight for his life that night, throwing her back, nearly making it out the door before she caught him around the ankle and he crashed to the floor, nails raking as she tried to drag him back towards her. He doesn’t know what trick of fate put the handgun within reach, but he could no longer think. He could only flip, squeeze his eyes shut and fire. The immediate silence was deafening.

It was a poor shot, but it had worked. It caught her in the shoulder, throwing her back, and Alex immediately believed that he’d killed her. He couldn’t breathe, let alone check. He only dragged himself up when he saw that their father was still alive, if only just. If only for these last few minutes. Despite everything, his gaze was accusatory. There was no fear in his eyes - no pain - only grief and disdain. Alex had to look away. He didn’t ever meet his eyes again. But the rest of the camp arrived soon after, pulling him away, putting him down by the watchfire as they tried to figure out what had even happened. He doesn’t remember the rest of the night. He only remembers the cries of alarm as they discovered that Maria was no longer there. They didn’t find her.

The riverbank scavengers disintegrated soon after the virus took hold amongst them. ‘Strength in numbers’ no longer seemed quite to appealing, and fragment by fragment they disappeared, leaving Alex, like many others, to fend for themselves. He only hung around to take what he needed, to cut the elastic of his sister’s bracelet by her bedside and tie the charms around his neck, and he left the riverside with barely a word. He’d been struck all but mute since that night. It look a long while for him to regain his tongue, erratically dipping from group to group, aimless in direction as he truly learnt what it meant to survive alone. He even managed to join a cult for several months, leaving on whim and boredom and returning to his wandering before these two strangers found their way into his life. He was sure they would soon splinter like the rest.
he was so, so sure.

[div class=tag]weight
[div class=tag2]155 lbs[/div]
[div class=tag]hair[/div] [div class=tag2]Dark Brown[/div]
[div class=tag]skin[/div] [div class=tag2]Tan & Rough[/div] [/div] [/div]
[div class=tag]appearance[/div]There's nothing in this world anymore that doesn't feel worn, stretched thin and weathered by time. Oliver is no exception. He's deep set eyes with dark circles around them, a telltale sign that he hasn't been sleeping; his figure is thin, his diet lacking any real and consistent nourishment; his skin is dry and his lips are chapped, clean water hard to come by and therefore just as lacking as the food he eats. Though he tries to manage his raggedy draw, his hair still grows long and greasy. He's a mess around his face that he trims back with scissors, but it hasn't been cleanly shaven in years. He's the look of someone standing at their rope's end, taking one day at a time as best as he can.
[div class=tag]dist. features[/div]You don't trust anyone in this world that hasn't got scared hands. That's what he tells himself. This isn't a pampered life, one without risk of injury. That's a given everyday you open your eyes. Everyone still remaining can document their time, relive old memories, by talking about their scars and their calluses. Those parts of themselves marked by work and their sheer will to survive. His own hands have been nicked, battered, and blistered. His nose has been broken three times now and a thin white scare runs horizontal across the bridge. These parts are what he notices first about himself. However, if anyone else were to look at him, they might first pick up on his eyes, sunken and dark. They'd take note of the way he holds himself, defeated and deeply slouched. If he ever were to shave his face, they might notice how young he looks or would look if the world wasn't as it was.
[div class=tag]attire[/div]He's absolutely no time or interest in finding any style. His attire consists of those things he can find in stores or houses. Shirts, pants, and jackets with as many pockets as he can find to add on space for inventory. It's not fashionable; it's practical in every sense of the word. It's all loose shirts and dark colors, nothing bright enough to draw any attention or tight enough that he becomes overheated. He's constantly changing shoes, opting for pairs that are light so that he's never dragging his feet or stomping. He'll wear layers to save space in his bag and always wears one flannel he'll later shred to patch holes in clothes that are more important to him.
[div class=tag]face claim[/div]Diego Luna [/div] [/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents03"]
[div class=tag]personality
Oliver is incredibly aware of everything he does. When he's had a bit of sleep, there isn't a moment where something goes unchecked. He'll mull over the smallest action and consider the consequences of everything before committing to an act he thinks might be dangerous. He's not one to take risks, even for someone he knows, and would bail at the slightest provocation. He's unbelievably cautious and has a strong sense of self preservation. He's completely untrusting of strangers. Even in traveling with him for longer periods, he'd be wary of them, always on edge and willing to ditch them around some corner unapologetically.
Due to his trouble sleeping, there are moments when he appears to be the opposite of this. When he's gone without sleep for a few days, he becomes increasingly absentminded and forgetful. He'll stumble or refuse to move altogether. Most times, he can tell when that's happening. He'll slip up and cut his finger opening a can or stumble into something which causes a lot of noise. These are mistakes he's generally used to avoiding and signs that he needs to hunker down some place and rest.
Independent in nature, he's self-sufficient and can mostly provide for himself. Adapting to changes in inventory or environmental conditions is something he does with ease. He doesn't need help from others and would attempt to never put himself in a position where he's in debt to anyone. He believes that everyone acts in their own self-interest and finds himself no different. He'd never do anything that would sacrifice his own safety over another's.
[div class=tag]+ traits[/div]
  • adaptable
  • contemplative
  • individualistic
  • observant
  • resourceful
[div class=tag]- traits[/div]
  • apprehensive
  • cynical
  • paranoid
  • untrusting
[div class=tag]fears[/div] Oliver has an intense fear of other people, large groups, and the infected. He's been on his own for a while now and the solitude has only served to further his anxiety about meeting strangers. He's constantly using gloves or rags to touch things with, door knobs and railings and belongings that aren't his own. He often wears a scarf over his face or will pull up his shirt to cover his mouth and nose. He doesn't like to be touched and he won't stick around if someone so much as sneezes in his direction.
[div class=tag]ailments[/div]He fractured a bone in his leg after jumping down from something that was too high. It never healed properly and he now walks with a limp. He's also incredibly quick to panic, so much so that he often has anxiety attacks. Lastly, he suffers from a sever lack of sleep. He's terrified to shut his eyes. He lightly naps till everything gets the best of him and he passes out someplace he probably shouldn't.

  • He won't ever sleep out in the open if he can help it so securing places for the night, making things as safe as they can be, has been another knack of his.
  • He's built up a fair amount of endurance. He can walk for hours without break.
  • He can also sprint faster than people might give him credit for.
  • Strategy and quick-thinking have always been strengths for him.

[/div] [/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents05"]
The Before
Born a little while before the lyssavirus, Oliver was still a kid when it came full swing. In his memory there was still a before and an after. He remembers living at the trailer with his grandparents. He remembers how small the house felt with everyone in it. He remembers sleeping in bed with his mother and younger siblings. He remembers his grandfather being there and then not being there. He remembers how upset that made him because his mother wouldn't stop crying. He remembers his father going out for groceries and never coming back. He remembers how adamant his mother was about them all learning english, how she gripped him by the shoulders till it hurt and screamed at him to only speak it. He remembers how sad she was after.
There were a great many things he remembered that he probably shouldn't be able to, not at his age. But like so many others they were an experience that seared itself into the brain and made you remember. Never the whole picture but small meaningless details that you might not have understood in the moment. Years after, they carried so much weight........wip

The After
There was never one monumental moment which marked the transition from before to after. It happened gradually, so slowly that it was hard to tell there even was a change........ wip

The Now
Oliver has no ambitions. He's no longterm goals. He's the belief that planning for the future only sets people up for disappointment. He takes things day by day. He survives.

height
he clears the six foot boundary with just about half an inch to spare.

weight
if he has enough to eat and drink, it hovers near 180 pounds.

build
his body drops and puts on weight like nobody's business, but if he has a steady source of food, it's happy to pack on muscle as if it'd just been waiting for the opportunity. at his healthiest, he has the kind of definition that would intimidate most from getting too close.

hair
inky black and feathery, the sides are kept shorn close to his scalp, but he often lets the top grow out long enough to flop over his forehead.

eyes
the irises are a brown so dark they look black except in the most brightly lit of places. they're almond-shaped and scored by strong brows, and while intense, they're frustratingly unreadable.

skin
sunkissed tan with a generous smattering of freckles, particularly across his face. he has especially thick scarring across his knuckles befitting his fondness of throwing punches, as well as two meaner ones left by knives that rope around his shoulder and across his forearm.

dist. features
he has the kind of cheekbones and bone structure that would almost make up for his surly personality. the broad shoulders and full lips aren't a terrible addition either.

wardrobe
he likely wouldn't have been much more stylish out of the apocalypse than he is in it. with a wardrobe limited to only dark and muted colors, his outfits are about as fun as he is: he leans hard into jeans and the kind of heavy boots you'd find in an army surplus store, and his shirts (plain and solid-colored) are usually covered by outerwear, which he rotates between a hoodie and a thinner jacket. he does have a hat but rarely wears it.

[div class="tabContents tabContents04"]
❛ positive traits ❜
level-headed & principled & loyal & strategic & honest & observant & pragmatic
a good fighter and a better soldier, leonas is someone you'd love to have behind you and hate to have against you. he has the sort of unflinching self-discipline that means, once he's set his heart on a task, he won't stop until he sees it through. rarely does he ever plunge into things without painstakingly thinking it through first; he's careful, and he has a knack for being able to look at a situation—the people involved, the goal, the resources—and finding the best path forward to achieve what is wanted. he works well under pressure, although his ability to think on his feet has been left sorely neglected in favor of strategizing beforehand. he says little, but he's extremely detail-oriented and able to pick up on things that would skate under another's radar. surprisingly, he's even observant enough to notice if one of his companions seems more troubled or subdued than they usually are, and he'll usually ask after them. despite a learned wariness of most strangers and a tendency to hold newcomers at arm's length, give him half a reason and leonas pack-bonds like he was born to do it. he's fiercely loyal, with the kind of bone-deep protectiveness that has him instinctively stepping in front of loved ones to keep them safe, putting himself between them and danger without much thought to the consequences. lying doesn't sit well with him; he much prefers voicing an unpleasant truth than spitting out a sweeter falsehood in its place. even the apocalypse hadn't managed to beat his strict moral compass out of him. besides doing his best to adhere to honesty, he does no more damage than is absolutely necessary, and if there's a way to hurt nobody and get himself and his companions out unharmed, rest assured that's the path he'll take. he can be unexpectedly sweet at the most abrupt of times; there is little he treasures more than being able to see his companions smile.

❛ negative traits ❜
stubborn & tactless & cautious & self-flagellating & harsh & restrained & insecure
fond—perhaps overly so—of brevity, leonas is prone to few words and fewer smiles. having spent most of his life in small groups (the most memorable of which is, of course, the trio he's currently a part of), he isn't familiar with social interaction in bigger groups and is much more comfortable observing from the sidelines than participating in the spotlight. even now, he can be easily flustered by people who are more forward than he. his particular brand of honesty often crosses into bluntness and, sometimes, veers even into rudeness; as he sees it, he'd rather know the truth—no matter how painful it is—than to be comforted by something meaningless, and he doesn't understand how others wouldn't have the same preference. his insistence on thoroughly vetting a plan again and again can be stifling, and if things go wrong (as they're apt to, in the apocalypse), he's more than ready to take on the responsibility for it. following this, he tends to self-isolate and withdraw into his own mind, where he can beat himself up in peace. if blaming yourself were a sport, he'd definitely be a star athlete. unfortunately, this can spill over, and he can be needlessly severe and harsh to those around him, even if he's apologetic afterwards. one of his favorite hobbies is depriving himself of even the most basic happiness, which—as he justifies to himself—is a luxury they cannot afford. he's hopelessly amateurish at expressing his affection. he'll take a bullet for his companions, no questions asked, but he'll have to spend a week overthinking it before he can so much as give them a quick hug. it stems from a deep-seated fear of overstepping. they've been through so much together, but he is still irrationally and persistently afraid of giving them a reason to leave him behind.

❛ fears ❜
a lot of deep-seated insecurities about being generally useless, dragging his companions down, having to see them hurt or worse and being unable to do a damn thing about it. he is inexplicably terrified of being left alone, especially since he's gotten so dependent on the presence of his two others. and—as someone who can barely stay afloat—he's not a fan of open water or bodies of water too deep for him to see the bottom. he'll take the long way around, thanks.

❛ ailments ❜
has some generalized anxiety as well as post-traumatic stress, but he copes with it like how he copes with everything else: repression. his right knee has annoyingly started buckling with no warning, and occasionally his shoulder will twinge throughout the day.

❛ inventory ❜
• a beanie that's more a scrap of cloth than a hat
• a half-empty tube of antiseptic
• vaguely sketchy assorted painkillers
• a single metal animal trap
• a small children's book in vietnamese
• half a dozen needles and a couple spools of thread
• dried fruit
• a broken wristwatch and a compass that sometimes works
• slim jade pendant on a string
• a pistol with a meager supply of bullets
• a beat-up set of brass knuckles that has long since lost its other half
• cliche nail-studded baseball bat

❛ special skills ❜
has a special talent for sucking the fun out of everything. his first-aid abilities are commendable (even if his bedside manner is, frankly, abysmal), and his steady hand and nimble fingers lend themselves well to suturing up people and clothes alike. if they have some rope on hand, he's capable of setting snares and other simple traps. while using a gun definitely isn't a strength—he can really only hit them once they're close enough to be dangerous, which almost entirely negates the point of a long-distance weapon—he's a highly effective physical combatant, both armed and unarmed. he's unflinching when it comes to blood, has a ridiculously high pain tolerance, and, of course, is not half-bad at thinking up plans.

❛ biography ❜
Born about five years after the fall of the government, Leonas had only ever really known a life of chaos and unpredictability. But he was fortunate enough to have his constants, which was more than many others could say; his parents were devoted to themselves, each other, and their son, and they made no secret of it. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, their family flitted in and out of brief alliances, but those were only ever temporary. His mother would often explain that she felt she had so much love for him and his father that there wasn't enough left for her to portion it out to anyone else. Before he so much as learned to walk, he learned to bond and to do so fiercely.
What he told himself, when he was old enough to internalize it, was that you get out of it what you make of it, and so he adhered almost religiously to whatever he could. Some kind of routine, some ragged semblance of morals, ten push-ups every day or a whole-hearted devotion to the people who'd always done right by him—anything to fashion his own sense out of a world that was sorely lacking in it.
But few good things were ever made to last.
One night in his early teens, his family thought to raid what they thought was an empty shelter. No doubt it used to house people, but they'd staked it out for a couple days, and in all that time it'd been dark and unmoving. Abandoned, they decided, and abandoned meant that they didn't need a plan. They were careful, because of course they were, but they didn't have a plan, so when things went to hell and an infected man (half corpse, half animal instinct, all lethal) burst out of the room, there was no fall-back.
His mother was bitten. Just once, but it was enough. Leonas and his father stayed for as long as they dared to, but they were a family of practicality if nothing else, and his mother wouldn't have them staying another hour longer when she could feel her lucidity slipping. So, three days after, he and his father packed their bags and put as much distance between the two fragments of their family as they could.
Leonas had been living this life for fourteen years, and his father longer still, but this was—without a doubt—the hardest choice they had ever had to make.
It broke Leon's heart, but he believed that it broke his father, somewhere deep and vital. Somewhere he couldn't be pieced back together. He had no doubt that his parents loved him, but they had depended on each other for three decades, the kind of relationship where they were less two wholes and more so two halves of the same whole. He couldn't imagine what losing that was like.
Leon did his best to fill the shoes his mom left. She'd been the grounding presence of the family, reason tempered with light-hearted humor and kind smiles, but Leon never quite knew the right thing to say, nor the right to do at the right time. He was too much reason, too much logic, not enough sweetness to swallow it down with. In the months after, he could feel his father slipping away from him, and he couldn't bridge that gap. He felt his age keenly, then: young, and helpless, watching his father be cut adrift and not knowing the first thing about reeling him back to shore.
About a year after the day they'd left Leon's mother behind, that broken thing Leon's father had been nursing ate him whole. In the middle of the night, he tw (highlight) ended his life, and Leon woke up alone when he'd gone to sleep as part of a pair.

] as a small token of friendship • a switchblade that she'd managed to steal from the last group • a flashlight that no longer works • a half-eaten plastic jar of peanut butter, even though it's not her most favourite • one dog tag, without a chain, but rope instead that once belonged to her father, incredibly rusted now and barely readable [ used to be worn around her wrist but not anymore ] • an extra emergency flannel[/div] SPECIAL SKILLS [div class=answer style="white-space: pre-line;"]• agility ; faye is very quick and light-footed. she can seamlessly navigate through obstacles and this also plays into her thought processes where she is always on her toes and capable of quick solutions. • hand to hand ; she is skilled at basic hand to hand combat, her knowledge stemming from her years in hopping from place to place and interacting with the wrong people. she doesn't know a method of martial arts, just adapted her own techniques which aren't all too effective considering her lack of strength.[/div] [/div][/div] [div class="tabContents tabContents4"][div class=scroll]HER STORY [div class=answer style="white-space: pre-line;"]there was a short time in faye's life where everything seemed to be perfect. her mother, annabella, was a young toddler when the pandemic first began. eventually separated from her parents, she gracefully finds herself settling at a maintained and well-run farm with a group of families, some lost kids, and travellers. things were somewhat peaceful there, and annabella had found herself being attached to music, a harmonica to be specific, that she'd come to find during her travelling. she often played for others, and they enjoyed it. she had barely been an adult when she met levi. he was drawn to her music, something that he greatly appreciated about her. their love was swift and short-lived and quickly into their relationship, annabella was pregnant with faye. annabella's life seemed to be falling into place with the love of levi, her daughter and her music despite the occurring situation. faye and her mother had a great bond, her father also made a point to be a major role in her life. things were perfect in her eyes. that was until her eighth birthday. her mother decided to "break the rules" and take faye out exactly at midnight for a little stroll. faye's best memories were her mom's spontaneous adventures. on their way back, they were singing to her mother's favourite songs when they were suddenly attacked by a randomer, one that was infected. annabella was the one to be bitten before she was able to take the attacker down. faye can't remember what happened or how she survived. one minute she watched her mother being bitten, then the next thing she knew she was waking up back at the farm in her bed, her father in the chair beside her, before he relayed the news to her that he had to leave, along with her mother. faye was distraught for days. she begged her father to the point of body convulsing tears for him to take her with him. her sobs bringing tears to his own eyes. he couldn’t take her with him, no matter how much he wanted to, but promised to always be there for her. faye had never resented her father for not being able to take her with him, especially as she grew older. but, that didn't make her life any easier. since the death of her mother, she was constantly hopping from one place to other, some camps often worse than the other but so long as she had somewhere to stay and food to eat, she didn't care. she was unruly, stubborn and constantly on the run, never committing for longer than a couple of months unless she had to. it was her way of coping with everything that had happened to her. by the age of fifteen, faye finds herself in trouble with a group of men for attempting to steal supplies. she awakens in a holding cell where she realises that these men are cannibals. at first, the leader attempts to offer her a place in his group, claiming that he has her best interests in mind. though, when she realises his intentions are nothing but corrupt, she manages to escape but not without battle scars. luckily, the worst was just a broken finger. distraught with body racking fear and grief, faye could no longer move. she had lost all desire to live and was intent on bringing her struggles to an end. to her luck, she was found by josephine and charlotte who took her in, even despite faye putting up a fight. they were able to nurture her and bring her back up on her feet, slowly warming their way. the first people that faye could trust in a very long time. since that night, faye has looked forward to what life has had to offer because of them. she has looked at her new family as her chance to make something positive and finally turn her life in a better direction. [div class=tag]vices[/div] it's not lost on everybody that bea is a quite immature figure. her lack of mental development was due to trauma caused by her mother's murder, but her risk-taking isn't a popular characteristic, especially in such trying times. in addition to this, her naivety causes her to be a little too trusting, which has caused loss of supplies and even risk of being harmed in the past.

[div class=tag]fears[/div] being abandoned, being lost at sea, being trapped on a rooftop with no way out
[div class=tag]ailments[/div] aside from her naive mindset, bea is allergic to penicillin.

» a handful of mica pebbles she found along her journey
» two scratched out polaroid frames
» an old set of sticky notes
» a pink panda pen
» a torn fanny pack that she keeps her knickknacks in
» two short knives she's particularly comfortable with using
» old pop-tabs from soda cans

[div class=tag]special skills[/div]
» despite her apparent innocence, bea is skilled at and certainly doesn't mind hunting, killing, and butchering animals.
» her narrow figure enables her to squeeze by and into tight spaces.
» she's rather fast due to her long legs, and strong muscles ensure that she doesn't tire easily.
» bea is adept at climbing, as rock climbing was a hobby of hers while she was a child.

[div class=tag]backstory[/div] from the very beginning of her life, bea was an innocent soul. despite being birthed into absolute chaos, her parents were loving and seemed to paint the world around her in a way that didn't seem completely horrible. they survived as a group, traveling across various states out of a beat up mercedes running on stolen gas and living off stolen food. her parents were far from perfect, and they knew that she would need to get down in the dirt if she was too survive too. even so, bea managed to maintain her sweet demeanor, seemingly unable to grasp concepts such as thievery and just the general idea of people being inherently bad.

bea had always been particularly close with her mother. she'd spent her whole live around her parents, but the bond she shared with her mother was stronger than just family. bea's father died when she was only 14, having been killed by wild animals, but she was able to move on. after all, there was no time for her to grieve. without her father, who was vital in their survival, bea had to be fully employed in helping both herself and her mother stay alive in the harsh conditions. they were fine for a few years, yet what small semblance of peace they had just couldn't hold against the cruelty of the people around them.

despite her innocence, bea had always known of the vicious gangs that roamed around. they were the one thing she'd been able to cement in her mind as "bad". she'd see the things that they'd done and despised them for it, fully knowing their capabilities and just how far they would go for so little. over the years, her and her mother had abandoned the car and built a small makeshift shack from scraps lying around in the ruin of what they presumed to once be a picturesque suburban house. maybe it had been a bad idea, because one night, as bea came back from scavenging, she saw the house ransacked and her mother left to bleed out among what had once been the home they had shared, left as a nameless piece of 'collateral damage' in a horrible bid for survival.

as bea sat next to her mother, watching her die silently, she changed. after her corpse turned cold, bea grabbed the meager supplies and trinkets that had been left and ran, sparing her mother only a final goodbye and not even a single tear.

( ! the backstory from this point onward is subject to change and expansion with final relationship building ! )

the next few years of her life were absolutely grueling. despite being on the brink of starvation at almost all time, bea devoutly refused to join the several groups that had reached out to her. however, she did eventually end up joining a group of sorts — just not the kind she'd imagined.

the other two people she met were unlike any of the others she had met before. just like everyone, they were hardened and strengthened from the anarchy that reigned, but inside them, she saw something unique: a glimpse of humanity. their friendship seemed simply inevitable, and bea internally holds a great deal of debt to them for taking her on in her weakened state. though nothing will be able to replace her mother's influence in her life, she found a way to build an empire in the wreckage her mother's untimely demise had left.
