When I was younger, I explored careers (art historian, military, psychologist) more. I also occasionally did some wild premises and a very select few Fandom roleplays (largely Doctor Who, haha).
Now, I tend to explore grief, healing, community, family dynamics, and perseverance. I also have...
This is such valuable advice, thank you so so much for your time! I appreciate the insights and suggestions. I'll definitely make some of these changes. 😊✨
Hi folks! 😊 👋
I've been attempting to get a new person to write with! (and maybe make a lil webcomic adaptation with) and have not had so much luck the past week or so! Would you mind taking a quick look and giving me a bit of feedback? I may be too restrictive with what I'm looking for. Any...
Hey y'all!
I'm curious to see if anyone is augmenting their RP with their writing partner into a novel format. If so, what has the process looked like for you? If not, why not?
Especially hopeful to get the links dropped for books from people who have published in this way!
I definitely enjoy limited 3rd best! It is often a little hard to stick with 100% when your character has some major misconceptions that your RP partner hasn't picked up on yet, but that's also quite fun in places.
Your insight into yourself is so multidimensional and deep, and I loved hearing how your character has taught you more about yourself and about transitioning through life. Thank you so much for sharing this- it's given me a lot to think about, too. 💕💕 When I have words for it, I'll be sure to...
A minor in astrology! That's incredible. I love it. And having the insight to recognize escapism in your character and in yourself is impressive. I'm always very delighted to see how others process their lives through roleplaying. You may be interested in the work of Bowman and Hugaas, who talk...
I am hearing that many of you have learned how to torture! I'm both intrigued and scared! Hahaha
I just. I need to know how you set a frozen pig on fire now. 😐😂
For me, I started studying herpatology for a character obsessed with his pet snake, and I actually love it now. 😊 I have also done some really fun gender exploration via roleplaying!
What have you learned through your character(s) through roleplaying? Whether learning about yourself via writing for them, a new skill that you had to delve into for them, or some other wisdom?
I only make art of my main characters to share and describe them in the narrative, but for a quick NPC, I'll add a visual from my NPC pinterest board if my partner likes that style of play. Some things are better to expedite.
I'm not sure if you're still seeking feedback, so take or leave this:
I had this problem too, of sounding robotic in my writing. My mentor at the time gave me some very blunt advice: "don't use five dollar words when a few five cent words will do. Save them for bigger things." To say something...
I've DM'ed for a number of years now, and I love getting a good idea of motivations and goals- personality is less important, unless I have a few players who are interested in playing a grey area/antagonistic character. In that case, I typically have a hook that encourages group cohesion in a...
Oh my gosh! That must have been such a good brain exercise. I'm rping 1x1 with someone now who uses past tense, and I tried to rewrite my scene in past tense after they posted for the first time, and was shocked at how difficult it was to take something in one tense and shift it to another. I...
That jives with my experience too- it's a strange thing to me to play a character in 1st person anything, unless they are writing! But if it toots a person's horn and their partners also like that kinda toot, well, nothin wrong with that
That seems reasonable. I had a romance novelist once who secretly submitted chapters about the other characters to the local periodical. It was very fun, and the only time I have felt comfy with 1st person.
Morning! I'm wanting opinions about present tense third person. I myself have been heavily influenced by screenplay writing over the past three years or so, and now strongly prefer the present tense third person writing style. In my opinion, it lends a dynamic immediacy to dialogue exchanges in...
