So I must take criticism, but I am not allowed to reasonably defend myself? Why? In what way does that indicate that I am a bad writer? I admit, I am nothing special. But I do do my research and I do put effort and thought into what I do. I advocate that people should and ought to criticize. But I find it ridiculous to say "you can´t defend your work at the critics"

Hmm. I think you are treating separating defense and criticism as two different entities. "Defensive *to* criticism," not an issue to defend *from* criticism.
Surely, there is nothing wrong with defending oneself and standing up against criticism if you feel it is delivered unfairly. This post is just a general post for encouragement and examination.

I used to be a ''Bad writer,'' as a kid, because I would always take criticism personally and not weigh it... I've worked with many others who think they know everything off the bat, and cannot be corrected. It smothers what can truly be in the process of growth, unfortunately.

I can agree, criticism is important, and being overprotective of your work, while natural, is far from productive. However, I would argue that more than that, what really harms people´s ability to take criticism, would be the culturally installed idea that good writing is a matter of taste.
