And this is why I spent a decade on my character's homeworld. To make it something more than generic Earth cloney. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind taking my characters to Earth, but that is just because they are not human and massive.

Couldn't you say that modern role plays could be their escape? Some people dream of a better reality than what they have. They could experience some things that their characters had but unlike them their characters may end up better off than them. Sometimes. I know that some modern role plays aren't that happy. I don't really understand darker modern role plays but whatever. That I can't really explain.

It's not the happiness, it's the fact hat I find them incredibly boring, my life? The only exciting part of it is my field work, other than that I'm a potato. So I need an escape, an escape from life, an escape from my marine research, just a plain escape

I cannot speak but of my personal experience, and that is three reasons, sometimes coming together, others not really. Do note, however, I am interpreting this as temporal thing: I am writing from the viewpoint of someone not using modern as the realistic genre, but as the modern time period, which allows scifi and fantasy and other such things, but within our current society and times.

1. It allows me to take focus into other things- if I want to put a heavy focus on the characters or something of that sort, I may not always have the full ability, even as a detailed roleplayer, to consistently convey everything. Taking into account the factors of a society other than the one we´re used is an admirable effort and amazing if well put together, but it´s an effort not everyone can afford to take.

2.It allows me to contrast- if I want to see people reacting in the modern times to a change in the environment.~Be it magic, tech, some weirdo superhero, whatever... or the opposite. Sometimes, I want to see something NOT get reacted to, like reincarnation stories, where one wants society to react but it won´t. These are fun ideas to explore, in my opinion.

3.It gives me access to tech I am used to think about- the same way it is hard to think of things from the cultural perspective of other times (say the princess who believes in liberal ideals, which would be a rarity at best in the actual medieval ages, yet people continuously make them), it can be hard to assume the current tech doesn´t exist. No way of heating/cooling your home in the changing seasons? Ever needed a supermarket in a roleplay? Sometimes, you just want to have access to this specific patch of tech.

I get you amigo but as I said, I need a huge escape, a sci-fi modern to me is just a scenario, i need more than a scenario, otherwise even that gets me bored

To each their own, I suppose. I also have my own weird nitpicks about the fantasy aspect of my RPs.
