The Catalyst

Honestly, this mainly comes from getting tired of seeing so many attempts at DC / Marvel RP's only for them to either be cliche, short-lived, repetitive, or simply just not ever happening at all. So me, being the hyperactive mind I am, worked up an expansive idea (which for those who know me know I always think big). This would essentially be the first RP and story of a shared universe I've called OSV, which stands for Original Superverse. For this RP as you can tell from the title, the RP will be relatively grounded, but also very much action and epic oriented. If I had to accurately depict a genre close to this, it'd would probably be Action-Thriller. This universe will feature all types of characters, lore, miracles, and events. You the RPer will have full freedom to create your own character with their own set of skills and abilities, but also note there will be a need for non-skilled/powered characters to play as well. If you think you might be interested, read over all the info and details and respond! It's not first come first serve, only looking for long term, committed, and immersive RPers!!! Seriously. I had a really great bunch before, so I'd love to rp with more amazing individuals.

Plot Synopsis:

2017. A stellar anomaly was detected in NASA that was not detected by any known man made satellites, radars, or technology. Not until it entered the Solar System in ergonomic form. Upon this, a black sanctioned committee was sent together to analyze it, discovering a luminous cosmically colored cluster of solid and an unknown material forming a widespread cloud like occurrence. And then... it was discovered that its trajectory was headed right for Earth. This was when humankind as we knew would change, even when the public of humanity itself had no clue. The cloud was discovered to have been spread in diameter and mass before, condensing into a tunnel shape, almost as if it was amorphous. Meaning something was influencing it, which is scientifically improbable but not impossible. But here's what is impossible. It goes in and out of the quantum state, meaning it appears only to phase out of its own existence. This operates on an entirely different set of physics. Which begs the question: Where did it come from?

NASA has dubbed this entity / occurrence "The Catalyst".

Now it is 2018, And to those on the inside of this information, the instance was fluctuating. It was more than a calamity. It could be humanity's natural unconditional evolution. Or... its destruction. As the mystery around The Catalyst unfolds, its reaches will affect far more than the balance of elements and nature. Human nature was also about to change forever. Conspiracy Theorists, Scientists, and even independent wayfinders of information and data all began to meet each other at one crossroads: The Catalyst, and it was coming.

A few miscellaneous things:

  • NPC's can be created by anyone as long as they're within reason for character development and plot.
  • As far as lore, no adding or building key details such as creating history outside your character's, or creating a fictional city/nation unless consulted and approved by myself.
  • No gary/mary sues, and no godmodding characters, skills, or abilities.
  • Please try to make diverse and unique characters, not everyone can be military trained, John Wick badasses. Bring a fresh character development and you'll almost definitely get accepted.

Powers / Abilities:

* The ability selection process will be unique, in that you select an ability, I randomize an ability, and from there the two abilities will be mixed for your characters' superpower. *

(Your preferred power + Random Power = Your True Power)

EXAMPLE:
(Pyrokinesis + Rain Control = Smoke/Steam Manipulation OR Acid Manipulation)

Of course this could range from a capes and heroes type fantasy adventure, to a very grounded and realistic theme, despite how crazy powers may be. If you've stuck around long enough, click and check out the plot details below! I really need to know people will stick around for this. My thinking was that our characters will have either individually or collectively been subject to The Catalyst, and upon being exposed to the new occurrence, it caused a fluctuation in them either cellular or neurological that would give them their abilities.

If you've stuck around this long then feel free to express that interest!!!

I'm interested! Though I do have a few questions

I'm tentatively interested in this, but I'm sort of concerned that the setup for this doesn't really allow for the expansive sort of "universe" offered by the comparative IPs, assuming that I'm reading this Catalyst bit correctly.

If everything starts "now," and from a single source, that leaves out things like legacy heroes, alternate, hero-affected histories, aliens, secret societies, "forces," and a lot of the other things that gives some of those settings their appeal or makes them "tick." How much "pre-now" worldbuilding is really going to be going into this, as a result?

Oh, this looks good.

EDIT: Got a few questions though:

1) While the scale of the roleplay is stated to be variable, is there still a place for people who just want to play city level heroes when the plot ceiling extends to epic level threats?
2) What's the desired posting standard and frequency?
3) Are we starting in a specific location or are we starting all over the map?

Ask away!

So sorry about the list I hat seeming picky but I've tried a few of these things and they were more picky so hopfully im barrable (Bearable?) Oh wait Cinerous asked all the questions that I was going too XD except 1: What kind of language is allowed? this isn't me wanting to use some but in another RP I tried to join the people were fluent in obscenity XD and it was kind of annoying. Thanks in advance for your help :)

Great question!! I'll explain this way: The current age in the RP will be a present nexus for the universe. Who's to say this didn't happen 10,000 years ago before man could detect it? Who's to say 1 million years ago that created the gods of man in mythology present time? I have already thought and considered these ideals and will only elaborate further to those who are accepted. The RP will simply focus on the present coming of this thing relative humanity has no idea about.

  1. Yes, something that can/will be accommodated
  2. 2+ Qualitative Content Paragraphs / Once a day - Once every 2 days
  3. The Catalyst would hit worldwide, but preferable if characters started in a relative proximity.

Cursing is allowed even mild vulgarity BUT if there are people who's dropping it every other sentence then this RP isn't for them.

To rephrase a bit for the sake of clarity, I suppose what I'm asking for is how far this entire thing is going to go, conceptually. Though I can understand the desire to keep some elements of the setting a surprise, if the goal is some sort of original or collaborative superhero universe, then people are either going to have to know what elements of the setting are available to them, or how much freedom they have to make up new material. As things stand, I'm having trouble pinning down whether this would be something closer to traditional comics, or something closer to a CW show.

A few of those points I've already answered in the interest check, and I wouldn't compare it to either. I'd say more of an MCU approach where one event is initially focused on, and from there can be partitioned via individual and character creativity to focus on more intricate storylines, discovering the course of a grander universe as time progresses. That's the best I can answer it and if that doesn't answer it I apologize lol.

I'm afraid it doesn't really, sorry. Thanks for your time though.

Nice. So we make a character and choose a power - and then you generate a random power, adapt the preferred one - and then we use our character with the new power? If I am understanding this correctly. Or, do we first let you do the power determination thing and then we make the chars around it? If the power is physical or it affects our characters - do we get to change who they are a bit to fit the power, or do we just roll with it? Realistically it makes sense that our characters are not tailored to their supposedly 'random' powers... but I would just like to get a better idea as to how that works. Very interested btw.

Great question! So, to answer your first speculation, it'd be the former not the latter. You make a character first and then when complete, I generate a power for you all. From there, you are free to adapt said power how you please for your already completed character.

(Example, say your True Power ends up being Weather Manipulation, you are free to give a tech based spin, perhaps even if The Catalyst brought out the ability it could be triggered from some unique gene that hasn't been seen in thousands of years, etc! )
