Realistic or Modern Status: It’s Complicated (CLOSED)

"Of course, I need to drive myself home. Hell, I'll probably stop at one." They finally get to Daniel's house, so Daniel got out of the car. "Thanks again, Mace."

“Yeah, no problem. Go have fun with the girls, I’m about to put my friendship on the line with that idiot Jayk,” Mason sighs.

"No problem," Daniel said with a nod before going inside to get his own keys. He had already contacted everyone, letting them know he'd be late.

Mason drives off to meet Jayk at their boxing gym. He gets into his workout clothes and anxiously meets Jayk by the ring. “Hey,” Mason says when he sees Jayk punching a punching bag nearby.

“Yeah, sorry, I had to take Daniel to the ER. I’m glad you didn’t go home yet,” Mason says and holds the punching bag for Jayk.

"Well I got here a little late too. Thanks for grabbing the bag," Jayk said as he kept punching it. "Is Danny all good?"

“Yeah, He’s fine. Just got hurt because of carpentry again. He got stitches and he’s going to hang out with Ainsley, Celeste, and his friend Roy now,” Mason says.

"Oh, that Celeste girl, huh?" He kept punching the bag, then said, "And Ainsley?" He didn't like that he hadnt been invited.

“Yeah, they’re gonna all work on homework together since Celeste and Ainsley have a project,” Mason says. “Hey. Can I be real with you for a second?”

“What do you think about gay people?” Mason asks, though he already thinks he knows the answer, but he wants to hear it directly.

"What, queers?" Jayk looked at Mason with a scornful expression. "I guess they're fine as long as they stay the hell away from me," he said with a shrug.

Mason frowns. Too late now. He had to say it. He wouldn’t be able to go on if he didn’t. “Well, I’m gay. And I’ve liked you for a really long time.” He felt his heart in his throat.

Jayk looked at Mason with a blank expression for a few moments, processing what he said. Suddenly, Jayk seemed furious. "What?! You're one of those freaks?! This whole time, you've lied to me! You were never my friend, you only wanted my ass! Disgusting abomination!" A couple of the other guys at the gym heard Jayk, and one of them moved closer, saying, "Easy there, pal." Jayk spat, "Stay out of this!"

Mason looks shocked even though he was expecting this. “Jayk, I’m sorry, I really don’t want to lose you as a friend. You stay friends with Ainsley even though you like her, right? So can’t we stay friends, too?” Mason asks. “We’ve gone this long, we can pretend I didn’t say anything, I’m sorry,” Masons voice is shaky. He’s holding back tears.

"No, I don't want to be friends with you! And leave Ainsley out of this!" Jayk yelled.
The other guy got between them, forcing Jayk to back off.

Mason’s lip quivers. “Jayk...” he says quietly. His voice cracks and he can’t find it in him to say any more. “I’m sorry,” he says. Sorry he was this way. Sorry he couldn’t be born a girl, or born straight. Sorry he had to be selfish and tell Jayk his feelings. He was sorry, then and there, that he even existed.

Mason finally cracks and starts crying, but through tears he thanks the guys that were trying to protect him. Mason just wants to disappear, feeling pathetic and disgusting in a gym full of straight, macho males and some judgemental females.

Daniel had had Ainsley text him what kind of coffee or tea Celeste liked. It was a chai late, hot, with extra cinnamon, but Daniel hadn't memorized it or anything. He got everyone else coffee too, and arrived an hour and a half late, with coffee in hand and Roy following behind him. He hadn't been aware that Roy and Celeste had shared a horticulture class until the car ride there.

Daniel said, "Hi all, sorry we're late, my bad entirely."

Roy said, "See but we can't actually be mad at you because we have to pity you."

“And you also brought us coffee,” Ainsley says and takes her and Celeste’s drinks, giving Celeste hers. “I’m Ainsley, it’s nice to meet you,” she says and holds out her hand to Roys to shake.
