To the Stars
The year is 2035, and humanity is in the midst of a major technological revolution. The driverless vehicle has become ubiquitous in all but the most rural and far flung communities. Much of the world’s energy grid is fueled by solar and natural gases, the internet has been enshrined as a human right, and doctors can print a custom-made organ for their patients instead of waiting years for a matching donor. In some regards, the world as it is now resembles the utopian visions that our parents and grandparents could only imagine in their wildest dreams.
Yet progress does not come without cost. It's been estimated that the advent of automation has rendered 500 000 000 jobs obsolete thus far, and while many new positions in the tech and health sectors have arisen, those in agriculture, automotive, and the manufacturing industries have been disproportionally affected by this shift. Those who live outside the major hubs of technology and commerce struggle to etch out a living, a massive gap existing between the wealthiest and most disenfranchised groups. To further compound these difficulties, coastal regions frequently contend with risk of storm surge and flooding, forcing local authorities to spend large sums of money creating dykes to protect their communities. Those who live away from the city centres often bear the brunt of these environmental disasters. As result, many families have been driven from their former homes and migrated to the burgeoning metropolises, putting a great strain on public services.
The Horizon International Institute is located in Tokyo's bustling Shinagawa ward . The private school takes students from preschool to secondary education and seeks to give them the tools they need to thrive in this ever-changing society. Most of the children who attend this established facility endure a rigorous application process before being accepted, or else have the connections to simplify their transfer. Horizon International lies in close proximity to one of University of Tokyo’s campuses along with the Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology, where a number of graduates go on to study. Besides being a hub for business, the area hosts a number of cultural/ entertainment facilities, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the renowned Shiki Theatre Company, and the Shinagawa Aquarium. A plethora of parks, temples, and shrines can also be found dispersed about the ward.
From the time of their inception, the Solar Sentai have existed as the vanguard of our corner of the galaxy. A group of soldiers founded by the Celestials, a group of timeless beings, countless iterations of these revered defenders have come and gone over the centuries. Some hailed from distant planets bearing intelligent life of their own, whilst others came from our own humble home-world. Each generation, regardless of age, species, or creed share a common purpose; To protect the bands of power entrusted to them and defend the system which they inhabit from those seeking to corrupt and consume. Each band, which is the source of each sentai’s power, contains a fragment from a great power long since destroyed, and gifts the wielder extraordinary abilities.
However, the power which these individuals wielded was equally coveted as well as feared, and so some went to great lengths to steal these bands. Most of these efforts proved to be in vain, hard fought battles in which the revered heroes managed to overcome their adversary. Some conflicts ended in defeat however, or worse yet, the loss of a comrade, which shook the team to their core. The most recent of these battles occurred nearly two centuries ago, after a former Celestial sought to overthrow the hierarchy which ruled the known universe. The enemy was defeated and cast away, but at the cost of the group's leader and the destruction of their band. Since then, the Celestials have avoided calling forth a new group of defenders, having already lost three of the bands and fearing that the rest would be put at risk.
'To the Stars' is an action sci-fi RP taking influence from shows like Super Sentai/Power Rangers and Sailor Moon. While combat will be a main component of the RP, there will also be time given for drama and slice-of-life moments, the balance between the two adjusted depending on what players are looking for. The characters of our story will be either secondary or early university students living in or near the Shinagawa ward. They have up until this point lived fairly ordinary lives, though how one defines 'ordinary' is often subjective. However the solar eclipse poised to occur in the next few days is set to upend their mundane routines and send all of them down a path of danger, excitement, and intrigue.
This is a semi-detailed RP- player characters and posts should be well thought out, as their actions will influence how the story progresses. Over the course of the RP, characters may receive additional background information or special interactions via PM which depending on how they respond to or utilize them shall impact the plot in the main thread.
In terms of mechanics, I'm currently debating whether to have battles occur in a freeform manner or utilizing simple dice mechanics to determine how conflicts are resolved. If you have any thoughts or suggestions about this, I'd be glad to hear them.
If this premise interests you or if you have any ideas/ questions, feel free to post down below and let me know what you think. Depending on the feedback and the number of interested players, I'll determine whether to set up a proper thread.
Thanks for taking the time to peek at this, and have a nice day!
