if Cassander being raised in Dalania was a sort of peace treaty between kingdoms. Perhaps a betrothal of sorts was meant between Cass or Cass' older brother and Nia, and Cassander being warded off to Dalania was just a stepping stone into breaching the gap between families/kingdoms? Still, there wouldn't have to be reason like that for him to be a ward there. It's a pretty common thing.

Also, I'd say the role of "ward" in a relationship or rank context would be that he's an adopted son of sorts, the only difference being that he is meant to return home when he's come of age. I would say the specific reasoning for him being sent there in particular is for him to be familiar with Dalania's customs and the region itself to perhaps encourage relations.
Trust me. It could've gotten much worse. It almost was.Dang, that was good. I've written Nia's death several time because reasons, some of them were pretty fucked. But that might have topped it. Good job man.
