Music I can't be the only person on this site who likes popular music, right?...

Your Best Friend
So I'm a HUUUUUUUGE fan of popular music, to the point where I keep track of the charts and could tell you thousands of useless facts about them. Most of my favorite artists/songs, with few exceptions, were popular somewhere at some point in time. My favorite songs of the past year mostly were notable hits, such as these, just to give you an example of how much of the exact opposite of a hipster I am:
  • Starboy by The Weeknd & Daft Punk
  • Into You by Ariana Grande
  • Roses by The Chainsmokers & ROZES
  • Low Life by Future & The Weeknd
  • Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift
  • I Took a Pill in Ibiza by Mike Posner
  • Tiimmy Turner by Desiigner
  • 24K Magic by Bruno Mars
  • Sorry by Beyonce
  • When We Were Young by Adele

When I look at music-related threads on here though, it becomes quite apparent to me that that definitely isn't the norm. Most people here seem to like more obscure indie tracks or songs from anime, stuff far from even touching the charts.

So tell me then - Does anyone else think this seems true and that I'm weird for being so top 40 in my tastes, or do more people like it than it seems?

You like Daft Punk and Bruno Mars.

That's nice. Can't say the same about the other singers/bands though.

I'm the exact same way. I enjoy some obscure stuff but I also enjoy mainstream music. I know some of it is absolute trash but why can't I enjoy absolute trash.

I'm very irritated by people who hold themselves above others just because they happen to like music that isn't mainstream. Who are you to tell me that I am somehow less of a person because I enjoy dancing to some T Swift and Beyoncé? UGH rant over. The basic premise is that you aren't the only one

Truff Truff Well that's nice to hear, at least. I mean, it's not like it matters much or anything. It's just music. And if what you like happens to be obscure and you enjoy finding it and listening to it, then great! It's simply that there's no need to think of yourself as somehow being better for it.

I really can't stand how awful and degenerate pop and anime music is. I really can't. If I had a choice between listening to anime music and pop music, the above GIF is my response.

I don't usually listen to the current popular music. I mostly listen rock/punk rock/screamo/metal music. But that doesn't mean thats all I like. I go for music that has deep meaning (preferably some meaning that I can relate to). But I do love Bruno Mars' older songs. and nicki minaj is my number one rapper But hey, no judgment towards people and their choice of music. If you like it, listen to it. Forget about people who judge you for what you like. Everyone is different.

To be fair, I just listen to what I like, whether it's some obscure local band that only I know, or a song by Bruno mars/Ed Sheeran that's played on the radio every five minutes.
I'll listen to anything really, and I don't think people should be judged just because they like a certain genre.

Zombocalypse Zombocalypse Well it's easily their biggest hit, so it just kinda figures I'd like it.

T TheRockInception Hmm, seems a bit harsh if you ask me. I guess I feel like just because something is common and mainstream doesn't inherently make it "bad."

minajesty minajesty I like stuff from each of Bruno's albums, although I think most of his newer stuff is better. Locked Out of Heaven and Treasure were really the stepping stone that lead to Uptown Funk, after all.

I do not like popular music because it plays on the radio everyday and I am not allowed to change the radio because I am not driving the car. I am sick of these songs.

But it I didn't hear them everyday I wouldn't mind them.

Besides, are you really going to compare Kanye West's song's content as intellectually superior or on par with, say, Rush's anthem to the introvert, the outcast, and the misfit so alone, AKA the song I grew up with? How about Living Color's (An all black metal band, may I add) warning against cults of personality, no matter how deserving or undeserving? To put the icing on the cake, Queensryche's critique on The War on Drugs and other Bush and co failures? The list goes on an on, popular music is not intellectually stimulating or talented. Is it also noteworthy to mention all popular "acts" consist of one person SINGING, and not playing instruments while they're autotuned? Geddy Lee (the singer of Rush) plays THREE roles: bassist, singer, and kebyboardist.

I'm more of a rock/punk rock guy myself. I like bands like Rise Against and Green Day. I think it's mostly because pop music is pretty shitty these days.

T TheRockInception Look, you're obviously perfectly entitled to your opinion, you like what you like. Just remember that other people, including myself, are allowed to like what THEY want too, whether it meets your approval or not. Live and let live, right?

Yes, you ARE entitled to your opinion, as am I. But my point still stands: Pop music currently is not full of intellectual or musically talented people.

T TheRockInception Well to be fair, there have ALWAYS been untalented people on the charts. That's true of any era. But whether something is good is completely objective.

And hey, at the very least, you can't tell me Adele isn't at all impressive.

Lady Gaga is my dance music. Specifically: Just Dance. And that one Pink song. "So raise your glass if you are wrong..." And Danza Kuduro, but who doesn't like that song, lol
