IF he were german, he would have been executed. There are no Nazi's left from WWII (Neo-nazis excuded)
Well, he is not Nazi. He was not part of the Waffen SS, he was part of the Wehrmacht. They are not the same. The SS were absolute loyal to Hitler and they were the ones who commited those warcrimes. The Wehrmacht were normal soldiers, conscripts and volunteers like Erik. Some weren't even aware what the SS did until after the war. Erik was one of those soldiers who did not know what happened until after the war. And there were survivors on the German side of WWII. And why would he have a bitter hatred for neo-nazis if he was a nazi himself?
He did believe that Hitler would rebuild Germany, because of the state it was in. Think for a moment, German economy went really, really bad. People were getting desperate. And when the future looks so bad and someone promises to make things better, then you want that to happen. But he did find out those hopes and dreams were just an illusion.
Also, the Wehrmacht were not 100% behind Hitler. Think of the Battle of Berlin. The 9th army more or less disobeyed a direct order from Hitler to defend Berling at all cost.
