My Interest Check
Hey all! This is my first time posting in here, so I hope I'm in the right place lol. I have a really detailed and thought out plot, but it's based around vampires. Do people still like vampires and werewolves and other supernatural creatures?? I never see any groups with them involved so I don't want to post if vampires have gone out of style haha. Please let me know your opinions and what you think 😭

Personally I don't think Vampires, or Werewolves and creatures of the like, will ever go out of style.
It may be a little cliche, but I know I and many other would still love to write with them.

Indeed! I say go for it. There's always someone who would like what you have to offer.
And if it doesn't get its wind; you can always try again.

Oh people love them (and some hate them). One thing though is that there are so many kinds of vampires and other mythical beings (as in some many versions/interpretations) that the word 'vampire' ends up implying very little. Sure we pretty much all agree they prefer the night and drink blood, but beyond that vampires can range from bestial undead monsters to just another fantasy race, they may have an uncontrollable urge to drink blood or only kind of enjoy it more than regular food, etc... Which is not even getting started on their powers or their place in the world. Vampires are I think without question very popular as a concept and I don't see that ending any time soon, but individual versions of them will show a lot of internal variability when it comes to their popularity (and everything else, let's be honest).

For me personally it's more often that I find a version of them that doesn't fit what I would like. My influences on my mental image of vampires mostly come from anime/manga nowadays, and I definitely prefer more slice-of-life or comedy geared versions. By contrast I usually find both classical and youth novel types influences on vampires, especially in more grimdark type settings or plots, to be less favorable with me, though they do seem to be more popular.

Ahhh that makes a lot of sense! So diving deeper into the lore of vampires definitely might help. This was very helpful, thank you!

It might yeah. I mostly would recommend avoiding relying on the name of vampires as a selling point. Think about their species in your lore if they were called Fibjib, would they still carry the weight and interest that way? Then they might work as well as they would as vampires. If they can't, then you are likely to capture a lesser audience than otherwise expected.

Hmmm okay, so like maybe a different species (is that the right word for this? lol) of vampire like an upir for example?

If I were to make a vampire group

Oh you misunderstood what I meant. I'm not telling you to change the species from vampires to something else in the actual interest check, just when thinking about the appeal, try to think of the appeal of what you have without the weight of the name behind it. Like thinking of a series like Rings of Power if it didn't have the LOTR name behind it.

I'm sorry I'm still a little confused haha, are you saying like still use vampires but give them unique traits/powers so they're not so basic?

I'm having trouble thinking of ways to put it... I guess perhaps, "Even though vampires are popular, making a species a vampire doesn't bring as much popularity. So if you want to think about whether people would be interested in the species or not, think about whether that species would still be as appealing if it wasn't called 'vampire'."

Hmmm, okay I think I understand. Thank you for the advice! : )

oh absolutely their extremely popular (at least in 1x1 roleplays).

Basically my entire roleplay catalogue is witches, werewolves, or vampires.

I am personally on a bit of a mermaid/dragon kick at the moment but vampires are a classic.

I would say try not to get too tightly married to any fandom specific vampires (unless you’re doing fandom roleplays).

So like if you want to do Twilight style vampires it’s best to make a Twolight interest check rather than attempt something original with those style vamps.

Good advice, ty!

Roleplays about vampires and other supernatural creatures are a dime a dozen, particularly in the 1x1 section. Different players have different visions for them, though, so if you're looking for something specific then it may take a bit more digging.

I still love vampires.

HOWEVER!

It is a question of how the vampire is written, is it based on folklore, Hollywood movies, or some young adult novel? Teen romance, my answer significantly changes regarding what source material was used for the vampire. I dislike everything that is Twillight-related because I thought the whole vampires becoming disco balls in the sun was the dumbest thing ever, but if you ask me about someone more classical like Dracula I do love the old fashion take that grounds vampires in reality.

I am also a huge fan of vampires from The Witcher series, as they are made from eastern European folk stories, and they have a complex history of why they are in the world as well.

So to me vampires are either a big hit, or a large miss.

Likewise. Definitely depends on interpretation. Some of the more modern ones, especially those intended for a YA audience, can be pretty cringe.

I'm not sure where you are looking because RPs with fantasy races (including vampires) are everywhere, especially modern day ones. The better question is "how are you incorporating vampires into your plot?" Could this roleplay be about other species instead or is it vampire specific?

You also have to think about what type of vampire you want to portray. As several people have mentioned, there are many different interpretations of the species so not everyone is going to look for the same thing. As long as your actual story is engaging, people will come.

Nosferatu vampires will always be cool. Twilight Vampires will never be cool. lol
VtM (Vampire: The Masquerade) Vamps have a variety of clans to portray different interpretations. But vampires in soapy teenage angst settings with family matters and love triangles are a total buzzkill no matter what kind you choose to portray.

Yes, I'd say they are. Especially with the amount of media with vampires coming out these days. It's evolving and I mean I don't mind either kind of vampire. Scary or Sparkly.

If I were to ever toss my interest into a group rp (because I don't really do 1x1s) featuring vampires, my most likely setting to hold interest would be some kinda urban underground thing. Kinda like Blade (the first movie, as the sequels were too over-the-top). A retro-styled urban punk setting would be most appealing. VtM's Bruja Clan or The Lost Boys movie seems to give the best reference, I guess. "1980's Vamp" And the RP itself would hafta be one of action and violence. Dark alleys and neon night clubs. None of that romancy-ballroom-aristocrat stuff.
