[SIZE=10pt]xxxxx[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]haseong was born in the slums, and he’s never known anything other than a life of destitution. he lives with his mother, his father; his older sister, chunhwa; and his younger sister, hyeja. technically, chunhwa is his half-sister, hyeja is his step-sister, and his father is actually his stepfather, but he doesn’t care for these distinctions. to make a long and painful story short, his mother was only a teenager when she had her first child. six years later, she met haseong’s father and thought that he would care for her enough to stay. however, he left as soon as he found out that his son had been born blind, deeming the child’s disability as a bad omen. then came kim shinjae, an older man with facial hair, the faint scent of peppermint, and a young daughter of his own. that was when 16-year-old chunhwa and 10-year-old haseong earned both a permanent father figure and a new toddler sister. although haseong is quite curious about his stepfather’s past, he’s always thought it would be too nosy of him to ask.[/SIZE]


[SIZE=10pt]xxxxx[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]growing up poor, and [/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]blind[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt] to boot, was challenging. haseong felt like a burden to his family more often than not. being blind was expensive - it required regular trips to the doctor and a new white cane every few years. on the bright side, most of the neighborhood kids didn’t really care. they all had their own problems to deal with, and a boy who couldn’t see was more of a novelty than something to make a fuss over. of course, he had his bullies, but when he was eight he met one of the scariest girls ever (second to only his older sister). she walked up to him, patted his head rather roughly, and said “you look like a puppy. kicking puppies is messed up.” and from that moment on, they were best friends.[/SIZE]


[SIZE=10pt]xxxxx[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]haseong’s family lives in the heart of the area controlled by one of the most powerful street gangs in moonsong: bulbaem pa. bulbaem pa is a loosely coordinated ring of primarily teenagers and young adults, a far cry from the organized crime syndicates one would find in the big city, however, they still pose a threat to people living in their territory, and everyone is expected to pay a monthly “protection fee” that ensures that they won’t be bothered by the gang. living under bulbaem pa wasn’t so bad, though, especially after chunhwa became its leader when she was 17. she and haseong were close, but she didn’t tell him anything about her gang life. haseong’s best friend, however, had no qualms with telling him all about it, as she had also become a member of bulbaem pa. he learned that his older sister was perhaps the most feared person all of the slums. she was beautiful, and she was fucking crazy. she seemed to have no regard for her own life or for the lives of others when it came to getting what she wanted, which was usually cash. the stories contradicted the protective, cool, and loving person that haseong knew. but sometimes she came home and their father would comment on the cuts on her face or mysterious stains on her clothes or the knife in her back pocket, and haseong knew better than to ask.[/SIZE]


[SIZE=10pt]xxxxx[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]chunhwa didn’t stay in bulbaem pa forever. after two and a half years, she was getting tired. she had been offered a proper job as an instructor at a martial arts studio. she was making a lot of enemies, too, and she figured she wouldn’t be any help to her family if she wound up getting stabbed in the back literally and figuratively. so she left the gang and passed the leadership onto none other than haseong’s best friend, who had been rising in the ranks and had proved herself as a skilled fighter. not to mention his best friend was almost as protective of haseong as chunhwa was, and chunhwa wanted someone in charge who would also look out for her brother.[/SIZE]


[SIZE=10pt]xxxxx[/SIZE][SIZE=10pt]despite his sister’s wishes, haseong didn’t really feel like being mothered constantly. he went into a bit of a rebellious phase trying to prove that he could hold his own when he was 14, but it subsided pretty quickly after a frightening encounter with a rival street gang. after that, he made sure to stay within bulbeam pa territory when he went out at night with his friends, trespassing on private property and stealing from street vendors and whatnot (he was usually safe from bulbaem pa members giving him shit for it, after all). he developed a love for punk rock and built his identity around his love for music. haseong and three of his friends formed a punk rock band and began playing shows at “the raggedy pub” for fun.[/SIZE]
