Writing Help — "Creepy" Characters

There are a lot of ways to portray a creepy character, the real question is how you want to go about it.

As was mentioned earlier, make something just off about them. Smiling a lot of the time is an effective means of portraying creepy and it is used rather often. Staring into space while smiling and mumbling their thoughts can be effective too.

In a puzzle/horror game by the name of Ib, we see two characters do this. In a story route where Garry goes insane after being separated, Ib can find him in the doll room, having a pleasant conversation with a toy bunny. Smiling and deep in conversation, as if he's in a trance. Ib is able to slap him awake or sit and become insane too, but this is out of the player's control as the events are determined by the player's previous actions.

Instead of having them be stuck in a trance, have the character do this from time to time. Too often would kill the impact, but one or two incidents would be the best measure in my opinion. It makes the reader question the sanity of said character and if you carefully craft the events to where it's never really explained why they do this, it draws more attention to the character and the literature. That doesn't mean you can't leave it without reason. Drop some clues, but never reveal hard evidence. You have to think out why they do it, and drop clues based on your explanation.

That's one way you can do it, but there are a lot more ways to portray a character as creepy.
