Rinka grew more and more restless as the painstakingly long process of waiting for his squadmates to show up and align continued, with each passing second he continued to question their professionalism further. His boot-clad toes twisted in place, progressively diging further into the thin layer of snow. Had them being able to properly see his face through the mask, they would be able to notice a visibly-irritated hunter.

But after what felt like an eternity, Captain Shima deemed it proper to command the units to proceed. Not wasting a single second, Rinka scurried forward and then up the wall, frantically scaling in a way that could remind someone of a panicked fleeing gecko. Hastily helping out his partner, he then landed on the other side of the garden. Flowing raven locks draping over his back as his knee connected with the ground.

It did not take any time whatsoever in order to find prey, as they approached the hunters, blatantly misunderstanding their position in the food chain. Rin could've gone ahead and start blasting the plants with explosions, but firstly, his allies were too close at the moment, the risk of hurting them by being inside the blast radius being too high of a possibility. And secondly, his blade in hand was more than enough to get the job done. With dexterous movement, the Hunter rushed towards one of the plant beasts, swinging his sword in a wide, upper diagonal swipe. Kukri-style swords, such as the Kopis that he wielded, were notoriously top-heavy, and while that may not make them the most ideal in a duel between two talented swordsmen, it gave the blade a nearly unrivaled chopping power. He followed up with another downwards swing, and then another and so on, a flurry of swings that cut their way through thick leaves, vines and stems. The boy let out no sound, nor showed any particular emotion, instead there was only the cold, icicle-blue stare of a predator on the offensive, which was even capable of penetrate through the lenses of his mask.

e9057a6c2cebe8f5e52b3decc7390896f4729205_s1_n2 (2).pngRenji followed behind his captain wordlessly, something that would surely be a surprise to anyone who wasn't used to working with the ordinarily annoying exasperating chokable talkative operator. His attention was completely devoted to his surroundings, remaining on high alert as he navigated the dimly lit sewers with his team. The deep darkness and the putrid stench of rotten eggs were of no concern, unable to distract him from the task at hand. His senses were more than used to taking a beating in far worse environments.

Eventually, the group came to a halt. Stopping in place as soon as Reiza's feet went still, he kept his hand near his hip and edged closer to the turn in the tunnel. It was unfortunate that their journey in the gross grotto couldn't have gone as smoothly as he hoped, but it wasn't unexpected. Neither was his partner's reaction to the Captain's command.

Having been in this position multiple times before, Renji could already feel a cool breeze and hear the crackle of ice before Ael made a move for the white-haired target. He preferred working quickly and silently, but he had long since accepted that he and his ice queen could ever only agree on one of those. Because of that, he was quick to follow up on Ael and Roseya's push.

As Roseya shoved her way to the front of the pack, Renji went for the two terrorists that had been caught off-guard by the sudden push. It didn't take much effort to take them down when they were already stumbling. After a quick sweep of the legs, he forced the pair to stay in place. Applying pressure with his left arm and knees, he pinned down their limbs as he reached into his pocket with his remaining free hand. Within moments, they were bound by ability-suppressing restraints.

Looking to the side, Renji took notice of Roseya wrapping things up with her own target. Good work was done here, but taking down two young girls wasn't exactly something to brag about. Not the coolest story to tell at the water cooler...He'd be sure to embellish a few details later.

After binding and separating two of the targets, he walked over to the third being held at gunpoint. After placing him in the same restraints, he left Roseya to handle the rest before approaching the one Ael had dealt with. Although, something told him restraints wouldn't be necessary here...

Just to be on the safe side, Renji restrained the human icicle just as he had with the others. After taking a look around to check for other hazards, he gave both of his squad members a thumbs-up before waving down the Captain. Everything looked clear. For the moment, at least.

What a surprise. Aelestra already disregarded her order for quiet. Then again, it was also on Reiza for thinking she'd act otherwise. Regardless, her team's efficiency in subduing the tangos sparked a bit of pride.

The white-haired boy, Mori, was down, unconscious, and sealed by a block of ice before he even realized what was happening. Nakada and Minami (the one with flowers in her hair) literally blinked, and they were on the ground in cuffs.

The Purple Rose, Hamada, was by no means weak-willed. He considered the Union as an impeding force for a future of peace. He was willing to guard sewer systems for Ibara. But having his powers plugged by the cuffs, staring down at least five things that could kill him, and the glowing orange pupils coming down the corridor...

A stain appeared at his groin.

"Good work," Reiza said, joining up with her team. "Didn't even need me." Brandishing her spear, she flipped it around and struck Hamada square in the head with the blunt end. He sank to the ground, unconscious. "I'll have people pick them up. For now, we go."

Down the guarded corridor, they went. There were no more cultists awaiting them, and as Reiza led the way with her GPS, she'd stop suddenly. Turning her head up, she said, "We're here. Stand by."

At that, Reiza carved a circle into the ceiling with her spear. She stabbed at the center, and after a while, the end of Kano glowed a burning red. Orange appeared in the ceiling's cracks like veins. Soon, the material itself became a vibrant red. The circle shifted, and Reiza stepped away.

The circle of magma fell, quickly cooling when it hit the ground. Light shined through, creating a pseudo spotlight in the sewer. Reiza took a spool of rope connected to a grappling hook. She threw it up, and the hook caught onto something.

After tugging on it, she was satisfied. Reiza hoisted herself up, motioning for the others to follow.

The only reason the light turned on was because it was motion-sensored. Nobody had been in the mansion's basement for years, evident by the vast emptiness. "We're in," Reiza said to her radio. "How are things looking from the outside?"

"You sure work quick, ma chérie," Montique answered. "Things are stagnant here. The officers I sent to pass the telephone haven't returned. At the same time, this means they haven't caught on to your plan."

"Good." Reiza put the radio away, turning to her team. "Here's the deal. Once we leave the basement, we'll be in the guest bedroom in the east wing. We need to get to the second floor of the west wing where the hostages are. That means we must not let alarm spread through their ranks. Only subjugate when you need to. Stealth is of utmost importance."

Speaking of stealth. Some people here couldn't help themselves. But she had a plan for that.

Beann Beann Lucem Lucem
"KiS-03. YS-35. When you can, find a way out the window and scale to the roof. Head towards the west wing. I want you to be ready when we reach the hostages."

She turned to the others. "The rest of you, with me."

Once everybody understood, Reiza found the door. Tearing through the paint of the guest bedroom's wall, the squad found themselves still alone. But it would be a matter of time before they encountered the Ibara again.

"I sensed their Auras ripple. As though troubled." Yuki entered the east wing lounge, with her Escort not far behind. The lackeys she placed in the sewers ultimately had a minor role in the operation—she regret not leaving more capable hands with them. She wrinkled her nose at the bedroom doors. As far as she was concerned, they were dead-ends. "Tell me it was nothing..."

"It was nothing." That earned Kaden a glare from her. "What? You said to."

Yuki shook her head. "Whatever the case, this place still isn't secure. Some of the mansion's security is still around here somewhere, and Goze needs us to flush them out."

The man grinned a smug grin for Lilith's first question. "We want the world to be a better place, of course." They watched quietly as the two women conversed. He didn't actually think they'd be willing to come in, but he wasn't about to turn them away. "My name's Fletcher. She's Tianna; she doesn't talk much."

Tianna moved her gaze away, still as unamused as when she stepped out.

"Come on in, lovelies." Fletcher knew these agents weren't buying into it. Who would? He certainly didn't. But like him, they'd have to change their minds. Especially with who was waiting inside. Letting the two officers into the grand foyer, Lilith and Chouko would find themselves watched by cultists from all sides. They stood within a safe distance, but the knives and other weapons they held didn't provide any comfort.

"Seiji," he called. "We have some Union members willing to talk." He turned to the two, smiling. "I might have fibbed a bit. It's not us you'll be speaking with."

b66d84beaba3d25e7a9e22a33d9f8daa.png
On cue, a tall but slim man came down the stairs. He had a soft-looking face—one that few could imagine with any amount of sternness. Accompanying that was a soft smile, one that widened at the sight of Lilith and Chouko. "Marvelous... I was wondering when I could meet some old colleagues."

The former Captain of the Union Spec Ops. Seiji Muramoto was remembered as a friendly man with a strategical mind. He foiled many Ibara attacks during his career, and was particularly close with the current captain, Reiza.

He died over a year ago. And now he wore a Peony-decorated robe.

Seiji met the officers in the center of the room. He exuded a much more welcoming presence than the Ibara cultists. "The dining table is in the wing your left," he began. "We can go and sit there for the time, but I would like to get pleasantries out of the way, first. You two are from the Law Enforcement division, correct? I am Muramoto Seiji. I used to think the same way as you. Then I realized what Ibara truly fought for—and what the Union only wants." His smile became wistful. "You are?"

The siblings at the top of the precinct; a ruthless boss and her cold right-hand-man.

They were late. Only by a few minutes, but late nonetheless. Well, Sybil wouldn’t consider themselves late. They were right on time, by her terms. Everyone else was right on time, too. Just as she wanted them to be. Just as she wanted herself to be.

The last black truck coming onto the scene made its way down the road adjacent to the mansion. Sybil looked out the window to the officers in front of the manor.

She spoke to her brother. He simply nodded. She smiled.

They pulled onto the premises.

Then, a bang— the rear bumper lifted up, the SUV being pushed slightly more forward than it should’ve.

They were able to hear the hard thunk of a body ragdolling against a vehicle and getting thrown into the snow.

Sybil looked towards her brother and they both exited the car.

They turned to see an 18-wheeler, unmanned, and the imprint of a body in the slush.

The body itself, however, was just as gone as the driver of the truck.

Sybil’s hand, held up by her other, covered her mouth in an expression of solemnity. Knowing who all was here, she was sure she knew the man who’d just disappeared: one nuisance of a mentor, Limo. His mentee must’ve gotten the news as soon as his heart stopped beating.

Had he jumped in the way for someone else? Most likely. With his ability and personality, it’s hard to assume otherwise.

The question, really, was where he had gone.

The expression did not last long, and her smile returned.

This wasn’t how she wanted it to be, but it was only a minor setback. Everything else will go as planned.

She placed a hand on Law’s shoulder. Whether he wanted to or not, they both turned around, and walked to meet Montique.

She stepped up to him through the slush, her void-like eyes staring deep into his. She hummed, “one of our own has already died tonight~. Make sure no others do. They’re under your supervision, after all.” She tilted her head upwards, as though looking down on him, “I would like our side of the line. I can do the talking. You take care of something else.”

As the small van pulled up behind the 18-wheeler, concealed from the officers in front of the mansion, the ponytailed woman behind the wheel tapped on it impatiently with a contemplative look before opening her door and turning to the red-haired man in the seat beside her. The man was fidgeting with the camera in his hands, completely unaware of the fact they had parked.

That was until the woman suddenly pointed towards the group of Officers standing in front of the mansion, barely visible past the truck. “Toshi, pay attention!”

The man looked up from the camera he was messing with with a startle. “Huh—?” He turned his head to the window, leaning forward to look past the lady. With a gasp, he crawled over her to get out of the van. “Why didn’t you say we got here earlier!? That’s the Union, Usagi!”

“I —agh— I know that!”
she said, helping him out of the van and promptly following him. “Go get the equipment.”

unknown.png
“Already on it, Usa!”

As fast as possible, a video camera and microphone were retrieved from the back of the van before the two awkwardly stood beside it. They stared with an air of determination towards the Union agents, though without much of an idea on what to do next.

That is, until Toshiaki pointed towards a red-haired member: a rough-looking, seemingly experienced man surveying the area. Very official-looking. He was definitely some sort of veteran! “Them! They look like they know what’s what!”

Usagi’s eyes followed Toshi’s finger, landing on the man. She nodded in agreement. “Definitely,” she said, before standing in front of Toshiaki and putting the microphone up to her face. In sync, her friend held up the camera. Toshiaki took a moment to listen to the words coming out of his ear piece.

“They’re switching to this cam in 5… 4… 3… 2…!”

“I know, I can hear them too— Ahem. Yes, Igarashi. We’re standing here in front of Babel Manor, where many important people have been taken hostage. Right behind us is the Law Enforcement Division, who came along with, you’d never guess, both other divisions of the Union. While the other two divisions are beyond those walls, let’s get the inside scoop from one of the officers.”

Usagi did an awkward jog backwards until she actually turned around to get to Guren. Reading the codename on his uniform, she continued, “This is N..T..L..-88. NTL-88, I’m Nakao, Usagi, from Unlimited News. We’d love to get your input on this whole situation? What’s going on?”

As Lilith and Chouko stepped inside the mansion, he blinked. Montique explicitly said for them to return, right? They had no need to go any further, right? He cursed in French, regretting not delivering the telephone himself.

At least he could rest easy knowing full well how capable the duo were.

Montique's focus went on the crowd. What was once a gathering of curious spectators became louder as word spread of the people behind the situation. Fortunately, it seemed his officers were keeping them at bay. Any bit of agitation could blow the entire crowd apart.

Then came someone who Montique would rather stay out of his business. He forced a smile at his boss, Sybil Sanban. And, first sentence in, she hit him with a curveball. Two curveballs. He only just opened his mouth to react to the first statement.

"Dead...?" he finally began. What even happened? Who died? And why was he taking the flak for it?! But he couldn't speak against the Chief. Hesitantly handing Sybil the phone, his smile noticeably twitched. "Yes, Chief."

Though he didn't want to admit it, having Sybil take over the negotiations was a big help. Now he could focus fully on crowd control—which, by the look of things, was desperately needed.

influencers.png
Joyful music played in the middle of the crowd as an impromptu stage took up space. Surrounded by a growing number of cheers, a beautiful voice broke out. It sang a song about grief of powerlessness; what people are driven to do in desperation. A song that pulled at heartstrings of empathy, painting Devil's Wrath as a boon that unfairly makes others treated harshly. While true, it conveniently concentrated on Ibara's many focuses.

Standing beside Suzume, Katsu recorded himself with his phone. "Does everyone see that mansion there? That mansion was built off of taxpayers' money to entertain the rich! This rich owner even has a history of discriminating against Devil's Wrath! Is Ibara really the villain here? They're only fighting people who have committed horribly wrong acts! And then corrupt organizations like the Union try to paint them as terrorists. But I see people fighting for equality and freedom, pushed to the brink by a society that hates them."

Montique whistled. It was the typical demagogue spiel which the surrounding crowd ate up. Talk about 'any bit of agitation.' It was a neat message that conveniently ignored why the law exists. If everyone ran rampant, tearing down others deemed evil, there wouldn't be a society to speak of.

He approached the nearest (and only available) officer. "Murasaki," he began, "I need you with me." Montique promptly pointed at the restless viewers around the influencers. "It'll be hard to break them up, but if we let them stew, nothing good's gonna come out of it." A swayed crowd could easily disrupt the task force, taking it upon themselves to 'fight for what's right.' Montique wanted to prevent that.

As the joyful music played and the impromptu stage captured the crowd's attention, a beautiful voice began to sing, weaving a poignant tale of powerlessness and desperation. It boiled her blood.

Murasaki stepped forward, nodding in understanding at Montique's request. She recognized the delicate balance of the situation. Engaging with the crowd required finesse and a level-headed approach.
"I won't let you down, chief," she said with a determined glint in her eyes.

Murasaki, incensed by the manipulation at play, wasted no time. She retrieved her violin, her fingers finding the strings with grace and precision. Her melody, filled with determination and hope, interwoven with the song's narrative, creating a counterpoint that challenged the one-sided perspective. The crowd's attention quickly shifted from the singer to
Murasaki's violin.

With a calm and composed demeanor, she set her violin down and began to address the crowd, her voice carrying with it an air of authority and reason. "My friends, I understand that emotions are running high today. We all have concerns and grievances, but it's crucial that we maintain a peaceful and orderly environment. We're here to ensure everyone's safety."

A murmur of recognition rippled through the spectators. People began to whisper and point, realizing that the woman standing before them was none other than the world-famous prodigy, Murasaki, who had mysteriously vanished from the public eye when she joined Ibara.
As the cameras clicked and the spotlight turned on her, Murasaki offered a warm, confident smile. She decided to take off her officer hat and ran her hand through her hair with a graceful motion, allowing it to flow freely in the wind.
Amid the growing excitement and the flash of camera bulbs, a reporter managed to break through the crowd's curiosity and asked, "Murasaki-san, is it really you? What brought you back, and what's your stance on all of this?"
Murasaki continued to address the crowd, "I'm not here as a celebrity or an officer alone. I stand before you as someone who has experienced the consequences of my choices and the impact they can have on our society, as a former member of Ibara. "
A reporter seized the moment and asked, "Murasaki-san, it's been a long time since you were last seen in public, especially as a spokesperson for Ibara. Can you tell us why you left the organization?"

Murasaki maintained her composure, her eyes connecting with the reporter's as she responded,
"It's true, I was once part of Ibara. I left because I came to realize that terrorism isn't the answer to corruption. I've seen the harm it causes, not just to those in power, but to innocent lives caught in the crossfire. I believe in a better way, a path that leads to change without resorting to violence."
She then turned her attention back to the crowd, her words carrying even more weight now that she had the spotlight.

"Friends," she began, her voice projecting clearly, "I know my past actions have left many questions unanswered, but I stand here today as a testament to the power of redemption and change. Ibara's grip on me is no more, and I've returned to uphold the values of justice and unity that I once believed in."

One person's voice rang out above the rest, shouting, "They just do whatever they want, hurting us, and they get away with it!"

Another added, "It's like they're above the law!"
Addressing the crowd's sentiments, Murasaki continued with a charming, benevolent smile, "I hear you, and understand your frustration. The grievances you voice are shared by many. Let me assure you that the corrupt billionaires will indeed face the swift hand of justice, just as those who promote chaos and violence will be held accountable. We must find a way to address these issues, to hold those responsible accountable, but we must do so within the framework of justice and peace. It is the light within each of us that can pierce through the shadows of corruption. It's in our unity, our resilience, and our commitment to justice that we find the strength to overcome even the deepest of darkness!"

The cameras clicked furiously, capturing the moment, and Murasaki responded with a graceful wave to the cheering crowd. The atmosphere had shifted from one of unrest to one of renewed optimism. Murasaki turned for the briefest of moments to give Ibara a knowing smile.

"Of course you want the world to be a better place, how silly of me to think otherwise," Lilith's tone was flat and it was clear she didn't believe him in the slightest. As the man introduced himself and his companion, she committed their names and faces to her memory, "A pleasure, Fletcher and Tianna~" Lilith hummed softly, one hand at her side and the other resting gently on her partner's shoulder to urge her along, scanning the room and taking note of every single person there. Glowing crimson eyes brightened even more when she saw how many cultists there were.

What sort of skills or abilities did they have? How many escorts? How many overseers? So much information to gather, so little time. Lilith would have to dig into these people's histories when she returned home. She had to work to hide the borderline manic smile that tried to creep onto her features, eyes gleaming menacingly as she memorized the face of each lovely specimen. Lilith also took note of the weapons each one held- should things take a turn for the worst she needed to know what to expect.

Fletcher quickly got Lilith's attention again, however, as he commented on how he had 'fibbed a little'. "I expected as much," she commented, smiling down at the Ibara cultist. At the sound of footsteps followed by a voice Lilith recognized, she turned and blinked, almost surprised- almost.

"My, my, isn't this a fun surprise," Lilith laughed, a real smile beginning to form, "I distinctly remember you dying over a year ago. Funny how some people just don't stay dead, though it's more likely you didn't die at all." She mused thoughtfully, linking her arm with Chouko's and pulling her a bit closer- a safety measure of sorts.

"My dear, you need not introduce yourself to me~ I know all about you," Lilith scanned Seiji up and down, eyes narrowing, "But you are correct, we are from the Law Enforcement division. I'm Lilith and this is my darling partner, Chouko." She walked as she talked, leading her partner in the direction he had pointed them.

Lilith looked back at Seiji, holding his gaze evenly as the manic smile she had been suppressing finally spread across her lips, "I look forward to hearing what you have to say, Seiji."

IMG_20230612_171646_385.jpg
Escaping the cold, cold embrace of the winter-touched earth, Saeb stared back at a perfect Saeb-shaped snow angel imprinted on the ground beneath him. It was a beautiful piece of art that marked he had been there. Perfectly capturing the details of his uniform and face… and something he stomped on until it was a collection of boot prints. He couldn't let it stay. It had to be snuffed out.

Erasure of art aside, The Captain & Vice-Captain issued new orders to the Hunters. Pesticide was finally in motion. Saeb slipped his hand into his brown, now somewhat white, satchel bag. Honesty, if not for The Captain, he probably would have forgotten to even put the mask on. Dragging his hand out with mask in tow, he gave it a once over while fiddling with it. Surprise, surprise there's a decently sized crack in one of the lenses. Was embarrassing him not enough? Now he's got faulty equipment. Damaged equipment. The rest of it looks fine, which is an actual surprise. It's not all that reassuring, but it should last for the mission. Hopefully.

Saeb held the mask up to his face getting ready to secure it in place while his thoughts trailed off. He wouldn't be lucky enough for only the mask to come out damaged. Right? Saeb hurriedly fastened the straps underneath his hood, tightening them enough there wouldn't be any form of slippage even if he were to get socked right in the face. He shot one of his hands right back into the damp bag, and rummaged around for whatever was in the bag. All his snack bars were just crushed, which isn't exactly bad since they're still edible, just disappointing. That disappointment quickly turned into grieving when he pulled out what he was really after. His tablet. The screen was completely Shattered. It turned on, but it wasn't like one could see much with all the cracks in the way let alone use it. Some salty snow tonight.

Saeb was brought back to the situation at hand as he noticed The Captain & Vice-Captain proceed over the hedge, followed by Akiyama & Kitano. He can't delay this anymore than he already has. Saeb tosses the tablet back into his bag, deciding to worry about it later, and hastily steps over to the hedge, while making sure he doesn't have another mishap.

Following everyone's coat tails, Saeb prepared to scale the hedge. Unlike the others he didn't have a particularly flashy method. He just wrapped his hands around as much as he could and hoisted himself up. Unintentionally ripping out whatever bramble and limbs he held on to. Leaving holes and his mark. Whether that counts as collateral damage is up to debate, but it was either that or Saeb making a 7 foot tall hedge-angel. And one of those choices is certainly more destructive.

With his upper half peeking over the top of the hedge Saeb could see that everyone wasted no time getting to work. About time he did the only thing he was good at.

Saeb pulled himself further up the hedge, his knuckles popping and cracking as he tightened his grip around the vines. He threw his leg over the hedge and rolled off the top leaving a nice dent in it. Gave it personality. He crashed into the ground. Knee sunked a few inches into the dirt. Snow kicked up all around him. This "fall" was several times louder than that tumble from earlier. If nothing was aware of his presence before, then everything was aware of it now.

Without missing a beat, Saeb shoots forward in a full sprint. For someone so large he can cover a lot of distance in a short amount of time. Driving his heels into the ground he charged towards the mangley mess of vines called Beasts. His body smashed into whatever was unfortunate to be in his way. Slamming Beasts into the ground. Sending them flying several feet into the air.

Untitled246_20230527210432.png

Hop the fence, kill the plants, no touching the house or people in it. Ok. Her buddy had already run off, eager as always.

Hikari’s nausea had subsided enough to put on the mask and hopefully not ruin it with an aftershock. The gas mask was ugly, but her request to wear a cooler looking half-mask and goggles was denied. Something about skin protection. Her right hand was also gloved, and its arm covered by a thick jacket. She stared at her exposed left hand of metal and wires, and wondered if she should have brought a glove for that one too. Would the spare one fit? Maybe the fingers were too sharp and it would tear.

Before she could get too distracted by these very important questions, the go order came through. Hikari slung her rifle over her back and scrambled to get in line, accepting Rinka’s assistance in navigating the wall and entering the grounds. Forgetting that what goes up must come down, she promptly lost her balance, fell off the wall, and landed on her face.

“Ow…” Her groan was muffled by the cold, near frozen dirt and snow that had done little to cushion her fall. The grenades on her front provided spots for the force of the impact to get concentrated. She’d be feeling that after the mission was over. At least the shock got her ability online. The surge of energy numbed the pain for now and got her right back up.

It seemed like the unusually small amount of hunters (wasn’t this supposed to be a major operation? Where was everyone) was doing just fine beating up the plants. One gun and a few civilian-level fireworks wouldn’t matter too much with Rinka the gardener on the scene. It was time to take inventory again. Her rifle had been spared from the impact by the body of the rifle’s owner, so no harm there. Her grenades, the ones that had done more harm to her than to the enemy, didn’t go off thanks to the miracles of technology, and seemed to be in OK enough condition for now. She could use them for the current fight. Any remaining would definitely be getting scrapped and rebuilt, though. Her mask hadn’t taken too much of the impact, and it was still hopefully functional. It didn’t feeldamaged from Hikari’s rigorous testing (just kind of patting it and trying to feel if anything seemed broken.)

The adrenaline in her bloodstream at this point had reached a critical mass. It demanded that the hunt must begin, and the hunter was happy to oblige. Bringing her tried and tested rifle to bear, she aimed at some plant off in the distance and opened fire.

The crack of gunfire and the kick of recoil greeted her. “Hello again,” her gun said. “Let’s get to work.” Under her mask, the gunner smiled. Hello again, indeed.

9d249UH.jpg
All clear to the right. Same to the left. Barring the fact that a cult had taken some rather high-profile hostages and sequestered themselves in a mansion built by the world’s gaudiest architect, little else appeared amiss. At a glance, that is. No matter how much he reassured himself that the brass had the situation handled, Guren couldn’t rid himself of the incessant discomfort gnawing at the back of his mind. It started as a minor prickling, like an itch buried just under the uppermost layer of your skin that wouldn’t go away no matter how much you scratched at it. The worrisome gut feeling didn’t go away, and his feeling of paranoia only seemed to increase as the minutes crawled on at a snail’s pace. It was as if his subconscious were screaming at him that something was about to go terribly wrong.

Then, it hit. He’d gotten into his fair share of scuffles over the years, and the punishments laid down upon members of Ibara who’d run away only to return were not light. However, nothing prepared him for the sudden pain that wracked his body without so much as a warning. It felt as if his heart had suddenly stopped beating, only for it to painfully restart. His lungs constricted, leaving him breathless, and he broke out into a cold sweat as nausea climbed up his throat. However, nothing came up when he heaved, instead followed by the feeling of ice prickling at his veins. And the worst of it came in the form of the realization that he could no longer feel a connection to his mentor.

No…he couldn’t. He wouldn’t. He’d only stepped away for a few minutes and hadn’t heard of any major developments regarding those standing watch outside of the mansion. However, before he could fully work himself through the denial and process the only possible cause of the pain, garbled voices interrupted his thoughts.

While still nursing his head in his hand, the slew of slurred murmurs grew until he felt sudden movement by his side. Barely registering the words spoken to him, Guren pried one eye open and looked to the side to spot a vaguely familiar redhead.

“Unlimited…what?” Guren said, still dazed but nonetheless giving his head a brief shake in a poor attempt to compose himself. He held his wrist in a vice grip to stop the tremors in his hands, and he studied the duo who’d approached him while wearing the best poker face he could muster (not that it meant much considering he completely failed to hide the suspicion in his eyes). Though his knee-jerk reaction to a familiar yet unfamiliar face was to assume the two were related to Ibara, it only took a brief look around to realize that the two were nothing more than overly zealous reporters intent on being the first to get their hands on a big scoop. Perhaps the vague familiarity was a result of seeing them around, whether it be on Union premises or on the news.

But why’d they hafta pick me? Guren inwardly bemoaned his situation. Was he supposed to be stern and chase them off, or was it best to shoo them away gently so as to not tarnish Union’s image? What was even the protocol for having a camera shoved in your face? Should he break the camera lenses? The only thing he knew was that he was to keep his mouth sewn shut tighter than an oyster or he’d be answering to his superiors.

Turning to the reporters and standing up as straight as he could, Guren stared down at the duo with what he assumed was a polite smile (yet he still managed to only pull off a stern look). “That information is confidential, it is. Wait for Union’s official report on the matter. There is a time for being curious, but now it is not.” Though his nerves as well as the shock of a contract break jumbled his already strange manner of speaking further, he hoped they wouldn’t take too much note of it. Nonetheless, he pressed onwards and narrowed his eyes into a glare. “And DO NOT, under any circumstance, think of approaching or sneaking into the mansion. That I cannot say would be a safe or smart decision.”

He knew reporters had a tendency to put themselves in danger and cross too many lines for the sake of their work, but he didn’t have time to deal with this. He had to find Limo!

So there Kenjiro was, (lightheartedly) hoping the Captain was willing to look past his sudden Partner troubles. It wasn't his fault that his Partner had to take leave for a family emergency! Not to mention the dreadful wait at the HQ as they organized his paperwork, hindered by the abrupt Ibara attack. The cult could have at least waited until he was good to go.

Well, better late than never.

Kenjiro sped on scene with his motorcycle, flashing his badge to Montique and then flying past him. He'd heard the briefing from the operators, and judging by the distant sounds of combat, they were already in the garden.

The last thing he saw before hopping over the hedge was Shinobu Murasaki handling the volatile crowd.

"Strike!" The shout was directed at Saeb as he dropped into the garden.

Dashing forward to join his comrades, Kenjiro snatched an abandoned lawnmower, hopping on it like a scooter. He revved it up, grinning at the roar of its engine. Once he was underneath the falling Beasts, he shifted his weight to the lawnmower's handle, flipping it over as he skid across the ground. Kenjiro held it up. One by one, the fell. Plant goop and Beast blood splattered across the garden like rain.

At an approaching Beast, Kenjiro thrust the lawnmower down on its bulb-like mouth/head with the blunt end. He tore a handle off, stabbing its leaf appendage into the ground. Its roars became more blended pulp as Kenjiro ran it over with his new favorite weapon. He laughed behind his gas mask, kicking the lawnmower on its side to shield against another Beast.

Mission Logs

0ee4f8198b401f3a76a2eb5f0b359d05.jpg
"Murasaki is exposed. You know what to do."

That was what Ose Aiko was waiting to hear—for years. All the days spent moping, regretting taking Murasaki in; it all amounted to this moment. Raiden belonged to her. She gave it to Murasaki because she trusted her... but clearly their bond was not equally reciprocated.

Leave it to the Union to manipulate trust for their own benefit.

Goze was going to be upset at her death, but it would be worth it. Everyone would know what happens to traitorous heretics.

"I... uh..." Katsu stopped recording, chuckling nervously as the crowd shifted like the wind. Suzume's music stopped around the same time. None of them could have anticipated the Murasaki being present! This wasn't his first gig, and he knew it wouldn't be long before the crowd turned violent against him and his partner.

As he and Suzume turned to leave, however, something tore through the streets with a trail of dust. The thing cut into the crowd, launching people to the side as new screams took over. The two influencers were in its direct path as it ran them over.

A body akin to wood charred black, red veins pulsating across its body, Ose thrust her blade. Metal clashed against metal. Murasaki deflected the surprise attack, skidding away with Raiden in her firm grip.

Ose roared. She slashed again and again, forcing Murasaki on the defense. "I trusted you..." she growled through gritted teeth. "And you made a fool out of me!"

Murasaki caught one of Ose's swings, curving her blade to stick into the floor. Raiden slid up the handle, nicking Ose's hand. The tiny tap was enough to send the katana's electrical charge into Ose, making her curse in pain. She lost strength in her hand for a moment, leaving her own sword imbalanced for a split-second.

That moment was all Murasaki needed to strike. Ose's sword clattered against the ground, and she instinctively raised her non-dominant arm to take the blow. Searing pain surged across her body. Her hand squished against the floor, the charred texture dissipating.

It was Ose's turn to back down, snatching her sword in the meantime. She cursed herself for letting emotion take over—and how Murasaki had advanced since their last meeting. Ose switched her stance to a one-handed style, stabilizing her breath as best as she could with the immense blood loss. Even so, it was apparent to her that challenging Murasaki to a katana duel was a mistake.

But if her lessons from Ibara taught her anything, it was that nothing mattered except coming out on top. She had to thank the Iris later—he was right on the mark about Ose's overconfidence.

A patch of Aura dissipated around her ankles. Sandwiched between it and her skin was a layer of ash. It dispersed in a small cloud, but they found their target on a small sidewalk tree.

"Officer Murasaki! Get out of there and regroup!" Montique said through the radio, realizing what was happening. But she didn't want to back down. Montique clicked his tongue. "Damn it..." He counted the nearby officers who weren't busy dealing with their own mess, and to them, he said, "Everyone assist Officer Murasaki!" Montique began making his way over to the fight himself.

The tree morphed and shifted before their eyes, growing and growing. Ose seemingly ran off behind it, leaving it to deal with Murasaki. The other officers, not as well-equipped as her, grouped together in preparation for the Beast. With the ash swirling around it and the Pest Control elsewhere, it was up to them to form a plan. They also called out to Murasaki to group up with them—not that she listened.

If she let it foster, it was going to become a bigger problem than it needed to be.

Focusing on her breath, Murasaki took note of her blade's position and angle. The slightest miscalculation would have seen the katana bounce off the wood. But, honing her senses and Raiden's inherent power, she held her breath. Her radio buzzed with Montique's words, but she was too focused to make them out.

And struck.

It cut through the trunk like butter. The tree Beast had only formed a hideous maw and it lost what would have been its lower half. It unleashed a fading growl—the first and only sound it would ever make.

But the threat was not over. She glanced around for her foe, but Murasaki realized her mistake too late.

"To your left!" Montique yelled. He was in a full sprint, but no amount of speed could have taken him where he needed to be.

Ose had cut down the officers behind her, and Montique's ramblings in the radio suddenly made sense. By the time she spotted Ose, she was in her face, thrusting her blade. It pierced cleanly into Shinobu Murasaki's chest. Ose stared into her horrified eyes, hushing her. She donned a warm smile. "It'll all be over... You're free. Free from the Union's enslavement..."

Ose pulled her blade out, and Murasaki fell. She took Raiden, ditching her other blade. To what remained of the crowd, she yelled, "Remain calm! Nobody else shall be hurt, as long as you listen to what we say!"

Montique, pale as a sheet, pressed the radio to his mouth. "Officer down! I repeat, officer down! We have an unidentified individual assaulting us! Form up!" But as the dust settled, he recognized her. Just as they had a profile on Goze, they knew her partner. "The individual is Ose Aiko! Proceed with caution!"

With that, Montique was now the only one facing her. He got ready for combat. "It's you and me, now, Ose..."

Inside the mansion...

"What is she doing...?" Goze's head twitched at the sudden crater of rubble erupting outside. The other cultists standing guard peeked out the window, eyes glued to the unfolding chaos. Judging by their looks, none of them knew about Ose's plan.

"So much for your desire for peace," Haruto spat.

"Quiet!" one guard retorted. "Another word out of you, and you'll be the first to go."

"Please," Goze spoke, "he's right. That wasn't part of our itinerary. But I assure you, Ibara only has the world's interest at heart."

"This isn't you, Bunko," Noboru said. Everyone promptly covered their ears.

"STOP CALLING ME THAT!"

Wincing through the tinnitus, he rose to his knees with a determined glare. "I can call my daughter whatever I want to!" The room fell silent. Cultists and hostages watched on. Goze let out a sniffle, and they could see a small spot in the blindfold go wet. "Bunko Nishimura... That is your name. Not Goze. Not whatever Ibara has turned you into."

Goze's mouth quivered.

Noboru glanced between the cultists, knowing full well what they might do. But he couldn't leave her alone. Not again. "That night when you were taken, it was Ibara that broke into our house!" That drew the guards into action, making them run over to quiet the man. "It was Ibara that killed your mother! Don't—!" One cultist put a hand over Noboru's mouth, muffling him.

"You're lying." Goze walked over to him. "It was your fault. You were never home. You didn't want me around. The Sakura told me so." Noboru's heart sank as she kneeled to his height. "You were my father once... but now I have a real family. One who cares about me. One that makes me feel loved..." Goze hugged herself, giggling.

Tears slid down Noboru's face.

Roseya didnt need the rope to climb up. Her leg muscles tensed before she effortlessly jumped up through the hole and up into the basement. She glanced back, seeing if any of the others needed assistance. Once everyone was up, her attention shifted to Reiza. She could hear the captain's voice in her own earpiece, along with the response from the Law Enforcement captain as they spoke over the radio.

Next came their new orders. Aelestra and Renji were being sent up to the roof to approach the target room above, while Roseya and the rest of the division were to remain with the captain. She waited until they were given the go ahead to proceed, moving through another wall into what appeared to be the guest bedroom, recalling the schematics in her mind. That was when Roseya caught a scent. Of people. At the same time, her ears stood tall as she could hear the sound of voices coming from outside the room.

She took a deep breath, confirming that scents were originating from outside the room. Roseya quickly moved ahead of the rest of the group, positioning herself at the door, waiting and listening. Though muffled, she could make out the conversation two people were having in the next room over. There was a woman and a man, from what she could tell. And it sounded like the woman was aware something was wrong.

Not good.

If they in fact did discover that the sewer team had been dealt with, it would make this hostage rescue more complicated than it needs to be. And they were quickly losing the element of surprise.

Roseya gripped the handle of the door with one hand, slowly turning it as to not attract attention. It wasn't long before the handle was fully turned and all she had to do now was pull the door open. She waited a few more moments before suddenly opening the door and slipping out into the main room, rushing the unsuspecting duo.

The woman was first. Roseya jumped up, raising her elbow and brought it down into her head. As the woman crumpled to the ground, Roseya tucked into a roll to keep her momentum, before springing up and tackling the guy to the ground. She positioned herself behind him and held him in a choke hold, similar to how she dealt with the boy in the sewer. But this time, her free hand came up to cover his mouth to muffle as much noise as she could. Her arm squeezed much harder against his neck.

The man struggled to break free from Roseya's grip, as she fought to remain in control. His legs were kicking at the air, as his arms frantically moved around, trying to find anything to help him out of his predicament. However he wasn't quick enough, as he body slowed down and eventually became limp. Roseya waited a few more seconds before releasing her hold, then quickly got up to check on the woman, making sure she was also unconscious. Once she was sure both targets wouldn't be getting up any time soon, Roseya reached for her PTT device, pressing the button and spoke quietly. The microphone around her throat picked up her vocal chord vibrations, making it sound like she was speaking at a normal volume.

"Two targets down. Main foyer secure."

Roseya reached for her pistol, drawing it out and waited for the group to catch up. In the meantime, she watched to see if anyone else would appear.

It was difficult to define “a better world” such that all agreed with it, and it was even more difficult to implement it, supposing that one did not care about the naysayers. Before Chouko could question the two on the subject and start a philosophical argument, she was urged along by her partner into the den of those who would rather stab them than speak with them. A mirror of Lilith’s mind, she started smiling; she couldn’t help it. How beautiful would the scene be from afar, she could imagine: two cautious officers that couldn’t help but set foot in the midst of a garden of thorns, all set in the backdrop of a grand mansion. It was unfortunate that there was nobody in the vicinity that cared as much as she; the stories evoked by the scene would be hers and hers alone.

“Yes, Seiji?”
Her smile froze in bewilderment as Fletcher said a name that sparked the barest of recognition in her beauty-addled brain — wracking her mind, she wondered who “Seiji” was, and whether she should’ve had more than a slight feeling of déjà vu, judging by the expression on the man’s face. It was schadenfreude if she had ever seen it. As a nondescript, unmemorable glasses-wearing character strutted down the stairs like he was a model and the spotlight was following his every move, she glanced around at her surroundings. Lilith recognized him, she realized. That made it even worse. It was not a beautiful thing to be a detective yet not live up to that role; that was simply incompetence and far too common.

The moment “colleagues” fell out of his lips and reached her ears, her mind switched to investigative mode. A Union defector; how many of those had she known? Feeling herself being pulled closer to her partner and patting her gently on the back by habit, she caught onto the fact that the man was supposedly dead to the Union. A dead colleague? There were too many of those to count. She pouted, before smoothing her expression back into tranquility. Why hadn’t he been more distinctive? Surely, a to-be-traitor would’ve been more conspicuous than he had acted, she thought, not knowing that he had been — she just hadn’t noticed.

Ignoring the conversation for more important matters like salvaging her job position, she mentally pulled open all the folders holding dead Union members from a year ago. Seiji, Seiji, Seiji. A lightbulb flickered to life in her mind; he was the former Special Operations captain. He had been known as a level-headed strategist, and she wondered whether the man was truly himself if so — surely, such a man would not so easily ruin years of effort only to join an obvious terrorist organization? And there were so many strains of Devil’s Wrath that it was possible the man had been reanimated, cloned, brainwashed, an illusion or something else her imagination could not think of.

During her recollecting session, Lilith had pulled the both of them in the direction of the dining hall, and Chouko had missed the timing again to interrogate him on how he had come to be. She had to act now.

As they walked towards the dining hall, she set a simple illusion targeting Seiji, narrowing the location to be herself and setting the central concept to be “Law Enforcement officer, Chouko”. The man had just heard her name, so unless his memory was atrocious or his view of her differed too much from the original, he shouldn’t notice. If the illusion didn’t take hold… there was something wrong with him indeed. He couldn’t be a person without a mind to delude, and that added weight to the prediction that the event would end in conflict rather than peaceful conversation.

To direct his attention to her, she smiled and said as if to agree with Lilith,
“Indeed, it is a fine thing to see such a beauteous visage on this day, and what more to hear what charming lips have to say about matters greater than we alone?”

Crouching, he slid out the door and kneeled next to the two unconscious Ibara members. While binding them in the ability-suppressing cuffs, he couldn't help but feel an odd sense of déjà vu. It was like he'd just been doing the same thing about five minutes ago.

It wasn't like he minded being on binding duty. As long as the hostages were safe and Ibara was dealt with, it didn't really matter who was doing the actual takedowns. It was just one more story he'd have to lightly embellish later on.

Giving Roseya another thumbs-up, he then pointed another finger in the direction of a nearby window. The area seemed clear for now, so this was probably the best chance he and Ael had at getting to the roof. The faster they worked, the faster they could get the civilians to safety. Provided he could get his ice queen to play along with the very impotent game of hide and seek instead of bursting into a brawl.

After giving the captain a signal, he went to fulfill the orders he was given. He swiftly and silently made his way to the window, propping it open after scanning for potential alarms or enemies on the other side. When it looked like the coast was clear, he looked in Ael's direction and motioned for her to go through as he kept the widow open for the snow princess.

He wasn't sure how she'd feel about roof duty, but he was ready to use a bit of the classic charm and irresistible puppy-dog eyes if needed. It wasn't really his preference to play around during a mission, but if it helped in situations like those, it was important. Then again, being on their own meant they'd be away from Reiza, so maybe Ael wouldn't be so opposed to it. Could've been his imagination, but he got the feeling she really wasn't a fan of their boss.
