Realistic or Modern Winter Chill

|Abigail Marie Davenport|

Abigail gave a slight eye roll at Pierce's comment about enjoying the view. She thought he would've grown up a little bit over the years, but as always he proved her wrong. When Alex spoke to her, Abby breathed a sigh of relief. She nodded at Alex's question. "Yeah, Derek's on the case...well you know him at DA Miller, but yeah. The guys that hurt you guys will be going away for a long time." she told her with a smile. This was the part of the job that Abigail loved, justice. Especially since involved her friends, she was going to make sure that those guys never saw the light of day again. The heart monitor began to beep faster and Abby was about to try and calm her down when her phone went off. Abigail saw an expression she hasn't seen in a long time from her best friend, it was like they were back in high school. Hearing an unfamiliar name, she gave Alex a very confused look and glanced over at Cole, curious if he knew who he was talking about.

However, Alex motioned for her to sit. Abigail took a slow, couple of steps, sitting on the edge of her bed. As Alex explained, Abby felt her jaw drop. "A- a daughter? You?" she stammered. She was absolutely speechless. What was she supposed to say? Alex was the last person that Abby expected to get knocked up. Seeing how happy her daughter made her, Abby's confusion faded into a soft smile as Alex looked up at her. She shook her head, "then it's not a mistake." she said softly as she took a tissue and handed it to her. Abigail reached out and gently hugged Alex, as not to hurt her. She had a couple of questions but Cole spoke. Abby looked up at him, skeptically and couldn't tell if he was really as happy as he said he was. "Wh-" she was about to ask who the father was when the rest of the group came rushing in, so she decided to stop and figured they'd continue talking about it later.

Abigail stood up and stood back, standing near the window leaning against the wall. She made brief eye contact with Cole after he made the comment about Adam not getting arrested. Yeah, Cole. I said something and no, I didn't get a thank you. It was with that thought that she fully realized that she was forcing something that Adam didn't care about. Her eyes fell to her feet, maybe she should just stop helping him. Abby kept her gaze downward. She had finally stopped lying to herself. Adam never cared about her feelings or her, so she doesn't care about him now. Call it even.

It was weird to be back with these group of friends from high school. She isn't the same girl she was back in high school, but she felt the need to be around them. It was like a switch was flicked, but Abby was fighting the urge. She isn't little miss. perfect, not anymore.

She smiled as they made their way to the next room where Alex, Cole, Abby and Adam was waiting, but the 23 year old silently hung back. She wasn't worried about Alex or Cole, no. She had already assured herself that they were fine, with of course, the help from Adam, but this one was different. It was her life. What would she do if they come back? Would she be willing to get a job to support herself? Or sacrifice it to make time for her friends? Rowan bit her let lip and peeked in, seeing all of her buddies gathered near Alex. Well, except for Abby.

Cole greeted her, smirking. She lightened up and smirked back, answering him. "Of course," she walked in and made a beeline straight for Charlotte, joining Cole by placing her right arm on her younger counterpart's shoulder. When they were back in school, Rowan was fine being the odd man out or the one independent girl. She didn't need to go to the bathroom in pairs or someone to tag along with her. She would've stood to the closest spot she could find back then, whether that be a wall or next to a stranger. But right now, she wanted the company and support that she had craved. She wanted to be close to someone that knew her. They were back together, so Rowan can't afford to being so distant anymore.

The silence was tempting. She always loved the silence. It always helps her think, helps her contemplate about the useless things like why macaroni and cheese could be best friends. This silence though, it was different. The temptation was not to suddenly burst her mind into thoughts, like what she did before the car ride, but to scream at the people around her, telling them that they weren't supposed to be silent. Something was wrong, or at least it felt that way. Abby shouldn't be standing there, she was always close to Alex, and it would only make sense that she should be standing closer to her friend. Adam. What about Adam? He shouldn't be so quiet. And a tissue right next to Alex. Was she crying? There was something that she didn't know. Something that she should say right now to ease the atmosphere. Rowan doesn't have the words anymore. She lost her artistic words of sass long ago, when college and stress had filled her life to the brim.

Rowan was aware that she was feeling intense. She was tapping her fingers on Charlotte's shoulder. A similar pattern. One that most of her mates had already learned. It was something she played on the piano, usually to calm her, but in times that she wished to have that same feeling, this happened instead. Her left hand rubbed on the side of her head, misplacing the hair that was peacefully resting there. Finally, it was too much. She put on a slightly sad face and plucked her courage. "So...what's," she paused, breathe in. "what's wrong?"

Pierce Van Selle

Pierce smiled as he jumped in to his, cruisinng fast and hard as he did a sharp turn in to the other room and feeling the painfully thick tention. Something was off. The dutch man felt it but he learned to keep his trap shut. The man let out a sigh as he sat there listening in and watching how it got weird with cole and Adam being there.
"I'm just gonna go...somewhere else." he didn't get a response and he was fine with that. Adam and Cole were the chosen ones, they were either sexy and mysterious or hot and flirty. Pierce's mind went in to over-drive as he wheeled away. Flooding with negative thoughts that everyone knew but it was hard to just tune it out. He was just the comic relief that people bring to parties for entertainment.

He was just gonna cruise around the hospital maybe going to the cafeteria. It was so weird watching everyone interact, he could feel the internal hatered and anger. That's just something he didn't wanna deal with. The cafeteria was a better option, a slice of pie sounded good. He wheeled up to grab the stale slice sitting in the case and wheeled it to a table as he sat there studying the graffriti on the table. It was a lot better then feeeling the same effect of high school. He was used as comedic relief but soon as it's serious he's tossed and have the circle closes him out. But hey it was cool, he lived alone for a while now. His job is great and so are the people he meets. The question is to leave his number or not. Because with them his
wink is dull and in effective.

Alexandrie Thymia

Seeing her former classmates all around her, Alex was more and more aware of how much had changed since high school. Perhaps the changes were not a bad thing. She had Serein, of course. And that was all that mattered. Alex knew that it was time for the truth to come out. She cleared her throat, trying to get the attention of the people around herself.

"I know that we haven't been in contact for a long time, but there is something that I'd like to tell you." Alex took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. "I have a daughter, yes. She is wonderful and brilliant and the joy of my life. Her name is Serein and her fourth birthday is coming up very, very soon. She has never seen New York City and I doubt that I will be well enough to go home and prepare her party. Would you like to hold a surprise birthday party here with me? I'd love for you all to meet her."

Alex looked around at her friends, begging them to understand her predicament - that they would not judge her.

Adam

Adam wasn’t sure what his next move should be. He wanted to run off and leave his past behind him; but that didn’t really seem like the right option at this point in time. They still meant a lot to him, even if he really didn’t know them anymore.

They all had to have their own demons they were fighting against why did he think he was any better then anyone else? Frowning he looked to Abby when she talked about how Derek was on the case. Bah, lawyers didn’t help a thing. Nothing every came from layers being involved in predicaments. Hell they were only in it for the money, the only reason he was alright was because he held such baggage over the one officer that he didn’t have to worry about things most of the time.

Besides he was a good guy now. Trying to be; putting his own ways behind him. It wasn’t going to be like it was before.

“Hey other people were fighting too.” Adam frowned crossing his arms over his chest to look at Cole and his accusation. “I suppose Abby helped though..” he mumbled giving her a look one of both sentiment and thanks. “Thank you.” He sighed running a hand behind his back unsure what to say much else, he wanted to talk to her in private, but what would be the good time to pull something like that. He wanted to apologies for everything that happened.

But when did he ask such questions?

His attention was soon taken from his little circle when he noticed Pierce wheeling away and he frowned turning and grabbing the wheelchair.

“Where do you think you are going?” he asked raising an eyebrow. “Come on, if I can’t bail neither can you.” He joked smirking at him a little. Before he heard something about a birthday party and a kid.

Wait someone had a kid?

Alex had a kid?

Why was that hard to believe? Huh well it made sense he supposed. “I’m not good with kids. They scream.” He said dryly crossing his arms over his chest. Earning looks he sighed.

“Really..I’m not joking.”

Cole grinned when Rowan joined the group hug and ruffled her hair in delight. “That’s the Rowan I know,” he commented, grabbing her waist before pulling her up and twirling her around thrice. Letting her go, he let out a chuckle and shook his head. “The quiet Rowan isn’t you,” an arm rested over her shoulder as his other arm rested on Charlotte. Sure the room got awkward really fast when all eyes suddenly fell on Alex. Charlotte was vaguely aware of Rowan’s tapping as she tried to figure out the atmosphere. She didn’t like how tensed it was and it made her want to leave. Before Pierce could make a run for it, Adam pulled him back and Rowan asked what everyone wanted to know. The suspense was killing her and Charlotte ran her hand down her other arm waiting for Alex to start her story. Did someone get killed? Who died? It was always death for some reason. However, she was completely surprised and taken back by the announcement and quickly glanced at Cole and Rowan. Alex was the dreamer, she was the one who seemed to achieve everything. If anyone was going to get marry first, Charlotte expected Abby and joked about it several times. It was weird that Alex was the one who settled down before Abby did. Cole seemed impassive as ever, as if he already heard what was happening and was waiting for Alex to spill it. The guy didn’t say much and he seemed cold for that moment.

“Oh so you’re married!” Charlotte quickly assumed once the daughter announcement was out. “Congratulations! I love birthday parties!” While Charlotte's exclamation was genuine but Cole didn’t reply. He didn’t know what to say and it seemed a little bit too fast. Although he would be lying if he said he wasn’t curious to see the father. When Adam broke the silence by telling them he wasn’t good with kids, Charlotte broke into fits of laughter. “I-I” she said as tears threaten to fall down. Her stomach was snuggled against her arms and after a little while, she finally stopped. “I can’t imagine you around kids,” she started mimicking him. Here, have some candy, now go away. Or or even better! Oh god! You’re crying, I gotta run,” she snorted at her own imitations. “And no duh Sherlock, of course they scream, just go Adam. It’ll be fun, stop trying to run away every chance you have,” Charlotte shook her index finger at him. However, her focus was shifted to Pierce who left the room right after the announcement. ‘What’s wrong with him?’

Cole glanced at the door and wanted to leave as well but it would seem rude. Finally, he spoke up and tried to sound as compassionate as possible. “Birthday parties are nice. For you Alex, I’ll clear up my schedule,” his flirting tone was still there but completely toned down by a lot. “So when is it?” He wasn’t sure what he was going to buy her. Gifts for young girls are so odd…maybe he’ll hand her an envelop of cash or something. His arm was suddenly cast aside as Charlotte tried to leave after Pierce. “I’m going to go check on him,” she quickly announced before heading out. Charlotte was on foot and Pierce was a madman on a wheelchair, it was hard to catch up with him. She ran after the wheelchair, trying to call out his name but he was already heading to the cafeteria. “W-w-ow,” she panted, “he…must…be…really…hungry.” She finally caught up to him, grabbing onto the wheelchair handle from the back trying to catch her breath.

“Geezus! You really can wheel this thing,” she called out and sat down on the chair next to him. The pie looked good and Charlotte reconsidered her stance. Maybe she could leave him alone for a few seconds and grab a slice herself. It did seem slightly rude at the moment so she stayed, her head resting on her arm which was resting on the table. “What’s wrong Pierce? Why did you leave suddenly? Alex wanted to throw birthday parties, you’re going to hurt her feelings,” she paused for a second trying to think of why he would suddenly leave at the announcement.

“Oh. My. God. Don't tell me...You have feelings for Alex?!"

Pierce Van Selle

The man looked up when he heard the more quiet footsteps but the loud personality calling out. The internal war waged as he forced a smile like forcing down unwanted food. The let out a a forced laugh. "Me ? Me like Alex?" oh man did he still have feelings but no way in ice cold hell he'd admit it. Even though it was still true. "You mean I used to, she'd too good for me." he admitted more quietly as his eyes lacked lustered and he still had that lost little boy eye.

"I gave up the idea of her a long time ago and today it just showed it even more. No one has time for the goofy guy anymore. Everyone wants the charming player or the mysterious bad boy" he spoke hanging his head down while reaching around in his pretend pockets for his cigarettes only to remember he was in a gown. "Don't worry about me Charlotte I still my job and hockey. I don't need that much love anymore."

|Abigail Marie Davenport|

Abigail was lost in her own thoughts as the rest of the group was busy interacting. She was snapped back to reality when Alex mentioned her daughter again to the entire group this time. She nodded in agreement to attend the birthday party. Kids weren't necessarily her strong suit, but for Alex she'd be there. "Of course, Alex. You know I wouldn't miss it. I'd love to meet her." she said with a slight smile. The next voice made her jaw tense slightly and she didn't even make eye contact with the source. Abby told herself she needed to get over Adam and she knew if she looked at him, her knees would get weak and she'd want to go crawling back to him like some lost puppy seeing her owner again. After all these years and he still had an affect on her. Then those two words hit her like a ton of bricks. "yeah, whatever." she answered Adam coldly, as she tried to stay strong.

She watched Charlotte imitate Adam, she wasn't too far off but she didn't think it was quite as funny as Charlotte did. Then again, their sense of humors never matched ever since that stupid prank she pulled on her in high school, ruining her perfectly white shirt. However, she smirked slightly when Charlotte called Adam out for running away from everything. She was surprised when Pierce wheeled out, not even with some punchline on his exit. He seemed so...dull. She considered going to check on him but they were never really that close so Abby doubted that he would even talk to her, besides Charlotte was already on that.

Abby's phone made a quiet ding sound from her bag, she quickly rummaged through her pocket book and pulled her phone out. The message caused her eyes to widened and she quickly deleted it. "Excuse me. I need to make a phone call." she said professionally, leaving her bag and files on the window sill before stepping out into the hallway. "What the hell was that?!" she hissed into her phone. "Stop. I'll call you later." she whispered angrily and hung up. Leaning up against the wall in the hallway, holding her cellphone to her forehead deep in thought.

The years have made much fonder of me, haven't it? she thought to herself, letting him ruffle her hair as well as twirling her around. She waited for it, unaware of the fuss with Adam and Pierce as her focus didn't falter from Alex. It came out, the announcement, with a statement that seemed to be made a secret, shock filled her eyes. Among all of the people in this group, Alex as a parent? It just doesn't make sense. But would Rowan turning quiet make sense. They've grown. They're adults now, supporting their own lives. It made sense, no matter how much Rowan would counter, it made sense. Serein? Quite exotic to name your child that. The meaning is beautiful though.

When Charlotte whipped her head to see the expressions on her face, she remained passive and yet she gave a knowing shrug to Charlie, as if she wanted to say 'Who knew?'. Her gaze lingered to Alex, thinking long and hard, because this was new to her. "Sure Alex, I'd be happy to." Rowan chimed in. She'll accept adulthood soon enough, but now, she needed to jam herself into communities, blend in, stop standing out. Rowan smiled a smile at Alex, thinking it would look like an encouraging smile when inside, smiling is the only thing she did at doubting circumstances.

Quiet, again, are ya, Ro? Go on, say something. You wouldn't want to worry Cole here, would ya? said a voice in her head, remarking explicitly that it wanted her to pretend. She shook her head silently while looking away, appearing that she was dismissing a thought after a daydream.

Adam made his comment on being around kids and she gave a chuckle, one even more audible when Charlotte imitated him. Cole's arm was still on her shoulder, he spoke, with a voice that developed from respect and his former nature. He asked a question she would note the answer of, keeping in mind to buy the present with all the others. She looked down, listening intently but looked up immediately when Charlotte went to find Pierce, who Rowan had just noticed was gone. Details are going pass me. I'm not so sharp anymore aren't I? Worry, stop worrying. Charlie got this... she said, trying to convince herself to stay a bit longer, to resist herself from running off.

Abby walked out to make a phone call and Rowan watched her steps--unrushed, smooth, professional. No flaws.

She couldn't even hear a word from the conversation. Not that she planned to be eavesdropping or anything. It was the effects of the silence, yet again. Worrying. Again. The sense of running out, again. Just run out, Ro. It won't do you no harm.

No, not yet. Just a few moments. She didn't want to intrude. Besides, it seems like going immediately would seem as if she was too eager to find out about something as personal as a phone call. She waited. Just a few moments. Just a few.

Rowan couldn't wait any longer. She kept staring at the entryway, concern written all over. She glanced at Cole before smiling softly, lifting his arm and placing it by his sides, giving him two friendly parts on said arm as if to say; I'll be right back. Rowan slowly walked out, cautiously enough to not startle Abby and peeked out of the doorway to see her a few feet away. She seemed stressed but calm. "Uh...hey Abs, sorry if I'm intruding... you okay though?" she asked, affectionately using a much shorter nickname.
