Personality

William is generally soft-spoken and reserved by nature. To those he works with, Hendrix can come across as aloof: keeping those around him at a professional distance, always assessing and appraising. His professional, focused demeanor can lead others to regard him as tense, uptight, and -- in times of stress -- downright overbearing. Those those precious few that have earned his trust, however, he is a loyal and even warm companion.

Background

William was born in Atlanta to a teenage girl with no support system capable of caring for herself, much less her newborn son. Left with little choice, she gave up the infant and Will was placed in the care of the state. He spent the first thirteen years of his life bouncing between various group homes and foster families all over the state. He did well in school both academically and athletically, but had frequent disciplinary issues. After a lengthy stint in juvenile hall, a family finally showed interest in permanently adopting him. Before long, Will was brought into the Hendrix home. He assimilated quickly into his newfound family, his disciplinary troubles evaporating.

Following high school, Will enlisted with the United States Army. He served four years with the 3rd Ranger Battalion as an infantryman before applying for Special Forces training. After graduating, he was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group as a Weapons Sergeant. During his tenure in the Army, Hendrix participated in multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, earning a variety of commendations for valor and meritorious service. However, during a deployment to the Kandahar Province, William's ODA received word of an NGO aid convoy under attack by Taliban militants. Hendrix began rallying local ANA troops to follow him in an attempt to extract the civilians, only to be stopped by his Captain for fear of them being led into an ambush. A heated argument ensued, during which Hendrix struck his commanding officer before leaving the FOB with a small team in tow.

Arriving at the ambush site, William's team managed to rescue what was left of the aid convoy... but the fears of his Captain proved not to be unfounded. A buried IED belt exploded in the midst of their formation, severing Hendrix's left leg below the knee. Several of his comrades were maimed or killed in the blast. Relief forces arrived soon after and Hendrix was medevaced, narrowly surviving his injuries. His lower left leg was replaced with a prosthesis and he was forced to undergo months of physical and mental therapy. Once he was considered fit to stand trial, William was summarily court-martialed and dishonorably discharged. He spent a year in Leavenworth, but public sentiment resulted in his sentence being commuted.

Unable to find work with his current condition, William gathered up his sparse personal savings and moved to Winstrom. Before long, his outlook turned to less-than-legal employment. Crossing paths with the Kid, William offered his services to help the young man in his crusade against the Mafia ruling over the city with an iron fist.

Rap Sheet

Following his actions in Afghanistan, William was charged with numerous Uniform Code of Military Justice violations:

  • Mutiny
  • Assaulting and willfully disobeying superior commissioned officer
  • Failure to obey order or regulation
  • Resistance, flight, breach of arrest, and escape

Vices

In the wake of his injuries, William was afflicted with a severe addiction to opiates. He has burned through a considerable portion of his savings acquiring prescription painkillers and heroin in an effort to stave off withdrawals and the looming phantom pain -- both mental and physical. In addition to his physical disability, Hendrix suffers from moderate post-traumatic stress disorder.

Virtues

When set to a task, William is determined... some would say to a fault. Once a genuine altruist, much of Hendrix's "do-gooder" tendencies have faded in the wake of his injury and subsequent detention. However, a large part of him still inherently despises needless exploitation and injustice.

Motivation

William's overriding motive for assisting the Kid is the paycheck it will provide. However, a small part of him sees the young man's campaign as a new war to fight: a war against a domestic enemy every bit as contemptible as the terrorists and extremists he's used to. If nothing else, this mindset helps to justify the new path he is taking in life... and the lengths he's willing to go to.
