Knight-Huntress Vivian Ardent

Vivian began training as a knight younger than most. Physically weaker than her male peers, she learned early on that she had to push herself harder if she was to keep up. This determination only grew over the years. She pushed herself past the breaking point more than once, forced to rest and heal when physical exhaustion and mental fatigue overtook her. By then, she had a sufficient lead on her peers so as not to fall behind while she recovered. But the drive remained, never satisfied.

When she attained knighthood at the age of 18, she volunteered to hunt monsters. The most dangerous job in the land, and a suitable test of her skills. By throwing herself into danger, she was forced to become even stronger.

Always training, working, or resting, she never had time to form friendships. Long, lonely nights on the hunt gave her time to reflect on what she was missing, something her single minded focus had overshadowed until then. Through cautious attempts to reach out to her peers she slowly came to understand that she’d burned those bridges long ago, never even knowing they were there. She turned to poetry, studying the works of the great authors with fanatic devotion. Fiction became a source of strength and comfort for her, even as her comrades-in-arms were driven to madness in the nights of the crusades.

Towards the end of her life, she developed a friendship with a travelling bard. A demon in disguise, the bard deceived her and slaughtered the heirs of her lord. Exiled for her failure, Vivian continued to roam the land, hunting monsters until she was killed at the age of twenty-eight, ten years after becoming a knight.

Perhaps having spent her life rejecting her limits had somehow changed the nature of her soul. She had always been a creature of will, and it was not long after she died that she returned, continuing to hunt monsters, always waiting for a chance to take her vengeance on the demon who’d betrayed her.

Living as an abomination so similar to the kinds of creatures she’s hunted poses less  challenge for her that seems right to her. Technically, no one knows she died on a lonely hunt. She’s been able to assume her previous life, albeit with some reservations. Her career makes it easy to minimize human contact without drawing suspicion. Her new abilities make hunting monsters easier. The powers growing within her might make it possible for her to actually fulfill her desire for revenge against the demon who betrayed her. Without really deciding to, she started hunting men as well as monsters. Felons and murderers, wanted by the law, dead or alive. Mostly dead. Always dead.

Even her single mindedness can’t settle the nagging doubt inside. The idea that she shouldn’t be alive. It troubles her that she’s not more deeply disturbed by her aberrant nature, or the fact that human blood tastes so good. Is that because her powers are convenient, or because her mind has been changed as well? She knows it’s not something she could figure out on her own, but there’s no one she could confide in, even if she was willing to trust them. At least there’s always poetry.

Bound in Duty: Vivian's soul is bound to her armor and great sword-the symbols of her duty as a knight-as much as it is her body. The armor cannot be removed. She can recall the sword to her hand at will if it's bonus die is active. Vivian can't use Bound in Duty sorceries as long as she has blood in her system which was taken from innocents, with innocence defined according to her knightly code.

Spend 1 Blood to gain 1 bonus die for attacks made with her bound greatsword, or attempts to defend (block) with bound armor for [Rank] rounds.

They suffer 5 Condition damage per 30 seconds in direct sunlight - this can be protected against by covering clothes, but Sorceries cease to function. Immersion in water deals the same damage, while torrential rain might deal 3 per minute. Fire deals 5 per 10 seconds. Rain and splashes of ‘holy’ water might be painful and annoying, applying penalties to concentration or other actions.

Fledglings can, however, spend Blood to regenerate condition at a rate of 1 Blood for 2 Condition.  They take the higher of Strength or Fitness to determine Soak. Additionally, Fledglings add +2 dice to Awareness and Investigation rolls, and both Survival and Mingling can be treated as ‘hunting’ skills to which this bonus can apply.
