Vampires

Novice Novelist
Teagan looked around at the carnage before her, fear and horror clouding her mind. She put a hand over her mouth, knowing that had she been human she would have thrown up my now. She had no idea how they had been missed by the hunters. She was just thankful they had been. She had only just been turned and wasn't ready to give up this life just yet.

We should go, The thought was quiet, detached. The hunters will be back soon, to burn the place to the ground. Still, Teagan found it impossible to move. She couldn't bring herself to look at the bodies around her, instead staring at a pool of blood. She could tell from the smell that it was human. She hoped that whoever it was had bled out, was dying in the back of his friends truck.

Again, Teagan felt the need to move, to run, to flee itch beneath her skin. Again, she made no move to go or to speak to her companion.

Davina's eyes ran through the entire room, seeing the lifeless bodies of both humans and vampires a like. Vampires who she unfortunately knew and treated as something she would like to call a new 'family'. She fought hard not to shed a single tear but failed, and after a while they just kept coming like it was an endless stream.

How could the hunters have missed them? Should she even care right now? All Davina knew at this very moment was that she was very sad, yet at the same time thankful that she wasn't killed. Slowly her head turned to look at Teagan, a vampire who was turned a few months before her, thus making Davina the youngest with only 2 weeks after she was turned.

"What do we do..." she spoke to her, but her voice came out shaking and throaty. Davina hated to admit it, but she was scared. So scared... Ironic considering she's the vampire, the superior one yet here she is. Shivering like a coward.

"Were all alone now..." Davina's hands flew to her mouth as she tried her best to suppress her sobs. She knew she was right. She and Teagan were left by the vampires they were suppose to spend eternity with, vampires they were suppose to be with forever...

"Always and forever" Joseph's words rang through Davina's head.... Looks like forever ends here.

Teagan was shaken it off her reverie by Davina's voice. She realized that Davina was crying. Teagan touched her own face and felt tears there as well. She tried to remember what it was that had been said.

"Not alone." Teagan was surprised to find her voice steady, strong, confident. She had though it would have shaken. "As to what we do... we should leave. Now. Get as far away as possible as fast as possible."

What they would do after that, though... all Teagan knee was that they were still in danger and someone needed to take charge. Davina didn't look like she could at this point; and Teagan was older. "We can head in to the city, figure out where to go from there.?

She went to the small bowl by the door and picked up the keys to the old pickup.

Davina nodded, her knuckles tightly clenched in a fist beside her. staying wasn't a choice, the hunters ought to come back in a few hours. Or maybe even in a few minutes. They will come back to finish this, to clean up after themselves. And by cleanup Davina knew it wasn't to clean the entire house with mops and rags. They'll burn this down, burn everything till any remnants of the Vampires who used to live here are all gone. Turned nothing more but ashes.

Davina started walking behind Teagan as they left the house. Their footsteps echoing the entire room that was now still, quiet with death reeking in every corner. Before leaving Davina stood still on the arch under the door. She turned around and took in a deep breath doing so more of a gesture for breathing was no longer a necessity for vampires.

"Good bye..." she whispered into nothingness, her eyes avoiding all the dead bodies. Suddenly a thought occured to her. What happens after a vampires death? Is there still peace? Salvation perhaps? Davina didn't want to ponder on this no longer. She knew deep down she was afraid, afraid to know what comes after this immortality, when this immortality came to an end.

"Teagan... Were not really 'immortal' are we..." Davina said as she turned to face her company. "We can live forever... But its so easy for us to die." Her words were dark and miserable, She didn't want to sound like this. But what can she do? The feeling of impending doom is lurking there, like its following them from behind.

And in no time it'll catch up to them...

"I don't have all the answers, Davina!" Teagan snapped. She took a deep breath, the stench of death thick on her tongue, then started walking to the car. She realized she had over reacted, and thought how best to assuage Davina's fears. "We only die if someone kills us. We just have to not get murdered... that shouldn't be too hard, should it?"

She climbed into the drivers seat, starting the engine and waiting for Davina to climb in beside her. Then she had a horrible thought. What if Davina didn't want to stay with her once they got to safety? Teagan had been alone all her life. She didn't want to be alone again. "You won't leave me, will you?" She asked.

Davina flinched and took a step back the moment Teagan raised her voice at her. If Davina didn't know any better she would be offended. But considering she knows exactly why they were both on edge, she understood her.

"I'm sorry..." Davina whispered as she ducked her head down. She knew Teagan was stronger, braver and more confident than her. She needed her to survive, they both needed each other to survive. Its just the two of then now and two is always better than one, even davina knew that.

She heard Teagan speak about how they only need to stay away from being murdered. But the thought of Joseph being centuries old was killed in a blink of an eye wasn't exactly comforting Davina. Of course he fought and killed quite the number of hunters, but they were too many of them. Even the hunters were willing to sacrifice members just to kill vampires.

Davina climbed on the passenger seat and sat still, thoughts after thoughts rushing through her head. Then Teagan's words caught her off guard, she always knew Teagan was this survivor, brave and strong. So what she said surprised her.

"Always and forever right?" Davina answered her with a smile as she slowly glanced at her. From the corner of her eyes she saw the digital clock on the dashboard that says 4:30am. Sunrise soon, it won't kill them right away. But it'll weaken them and as far as they know. They can't afford that.

Teagan starts to drive, fast, taking the small back road away from the farmhouse. "We're family, now. Sisters." She said, mostly to herself. 'Always and Forever' had been one of Joseph's favorite sayings. He'd used to emphasize the permanence of the second life. It clearly wasn't as permanent as he had thought.

'Always and Forever.' Teagan scoffed. She thought of the implications of that little phrase. When she had first been turned she thought it meant always having family. After her first few feeds, she thought it meant forever being super strong and super beautiful. After her first kill she believed it had meant always having power. Now she didn't know what to think. In her heart of hearts, she wondered if they weren't empty words by a half crazed old man.

((If I disappear assume I fell asleep. I'm actively trying to sleep yet, but it is late for me.))

Davina smiled when Teagan said the word 'Sisters'. She heard her, of course she would considering she was just beside her and her hearing has been heightened as a vampire. The thought comforted her knowing she still have a sister, she still have Teagan. The only thing she hopes for now is that she won't loose her too. Davina knew she won't survive alone, this world that she lives in now is too complicated, the dangers, the threat of the hunters.

Davina thought that Vampires all stick together, but she was wrong. Joseph told them that there are vampires out there who are ravaged, no shred of humanity left in them that they are nothing more but a shell to a killing machine. Which means even more enemies to watch out for...

After a while of sitting as Teagan drove, Davina felt her throat burning, her fangs popping out from the soles of her canines.

"Teagan... I need to... f-feed." Davina said as her hand slowly clutched her throat to ease the burning. How long has it been since she last fed? A day? a day and a half? She knew she can't keep this up. She needed to feed, soon the burning would turn to pain, then the pain would be excruciating like her body was rotting.

Teagan looked over at Davina, a little concerned. She could feel the beginnings of hunger herself, but since she wasn't fresh turned could wait a little longer. She looked at the open highway. The sun was starting to rise in front of them. "Can you wait a little bit? I think we are about an forty minutes out of Poughkeepsie." Teagan increased the pressure on the gas petal just a little bit.

Davina forced herself to nod as she try to fight the urge to jump out of the truck and Vampire speed her way towards the city, she knew that would be faster. But probably the most dangerous and most reckless thing to do. After all they were suppose to lay low, if they drew too much attention to themselves they're both good as dead.

Trying to distract herself she started to think of other things, anything as long as she can keep her head out of the fact that her throat was now burning. "Joseph... He likes you..." Davina blurted out without even realizing what she was saying. And as far as she knows, Teagan probably knew exactly what Davina meant by "Likes you".

Teagan gripped the steering wheel tighter, lips pressing together. She'd knew what Davina meant, and had known of Joseph's feelings towards her. Not that he had feelings at this point. She felt a lump form in her throat. She fought the feeling, shook off the impending tears. "Joseph is dead now." Was all she said.

She reached up and pulled down the visor, the sun was starting to shine in through the windshield. A couple of small houses started to appear outside the window. Even inside the car she could smell the sweet scent of humans. They'd reached the city.

((Since we are in practically opposite time zones, I think we should have a one post a day minimum, as opposed to anything higher. That way if we are on at completely different times the story can still flow. I'm trying for 2-6 paragraphs, but I think during conversations we can drop to one paragraph.))

Davina nodded understanding Teagan right away. "You don't wanna talk about it." She said with finality as she squinted her eyes as she say the rays of the sun shine through the windshield of the truck. It doesn't hurt, not yet but it is definitely uncomfortable to their eyes. "The suns up, we can't keep this up any longer."

Looking up ahead Davina saw the row of houses, and houses meant humans, its time to hunt.

Teagan had never been out hunting before. Her kills would always be brought to her by the older vampires. She wasn't sure where to start, especially not in the daylight. Had it been night, a bar might do. That's where she had been taken from. Teagan remembered going with her friend reluctantly to buy the fake id's, going to a bar for the first time. Being led into an alleyway by the charismatic stranger. Waking up in a whole new life.

She shook her head. She couldn't let herself get distracted from the problem at hand. Where to go to hunt. "We need to find somewhere with a lot of people... with an alley or some other deserted place near by." She said. "And once we feed, a motel to wait out the sunlight."
