My Interest Check
On land there are tales of magical creatures that are said to have the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish. Many have dismissed this story as fake, as a simple fairytale. A tale sailors spun to get more people on board their boats and out to sea, because who wouldn't want to see one of these amazing creatures? What the people forgot was that every story was based upon some type of truth.

Under the sea there is a species that scientists haven't discovered. Many humans have taken it upon themselves to name them, since scientists refuse to say that they exist without solid evidence. The females are known as mermaids, and the males are known as mermen. There have been very few sightings of them, since they rarely come up to the surface. The ones that were seen, well they left the observer gaping. Alas, the poor man's story was never believed.

Mermaids can live a peaceful life under the sea, as long as the humans don't interfere....

In this roleplay you can play as either a mermaid, or a human.

The bottom of the ocean was littered with life. From the lobsters crawling around, to the Clams that stayed in one solitary position, only moving with the current. The coral reef was a beautiful sight to behold. The bright colors and fish swimming among them was a breathtaking view. Alana enjoyed it as well, even though that wasn't what held her attention at the moment.

Her tail sparkles from what light that reached this part of the ocean. She swam easily over to a ship that had sunk to the bottom. At the moment she was looking for items found on land, and many of those could be found among the wreckage. While she liked to search for fun, this time it was for her father. He had needed her to collect these things to sell.

She was searching for a particular thing, the females were guitar fond of it. It showed the face of the person looking into it. It was very useful for when you were decorating your hair and other things. Usually one was able to find it here rather easily, but today it seemed to be hiding from her. Didn't matter, she was sure to find one before the end of the day, and many other things too. The net attached to her waist could hold enough to last a lifetime. All she could do now was keep on swimming.

Torick sighed, remembering how bad he had felt when he'd woken that morning to find his loot chest almost empty. The last time he'd went hunting for trinkets he'd stocked his chest full with everything, from four pronged metal back scratchers to silky cloth. He supposed the shoppers had stocked up on his wares, seeing as he'd ran out of things rather quickly. His dark tail propelled him forward as he searched for the ship he'd passed not long ago. Humans and their inability to maneuver the deadly waves of the ocean were really what he relied on.

Finally he found it, but couldn't help but let his heart sink slightly when he saw the flash of a tail. Someone was already at his ship! He quickly went toward the ship, entering a porthole where the other merperson wouldn't see him. He'd winded up in a bedroom, and as he turned to take in his surroundings he caught a small reflection of light from the corner of his eye. As he swam toward it, he smiled. It was one of those things the maids used to gussy themselves up. Torick reached out and snatched it, placing it in his satchel, which was made from a large peace of cloth that he'd found on a ship not unlike the one he was currently in. The satchel ran across his chest and over his shoulder, where it sat in place as he swam.

He suddenly heard the sound of a passing swimmer, and he pushed himself closer to the door where he peeked out of a crack in it. It was a maid, but he could not place her age or where it was she was from. He pushed open the door and swam out, a charming smile on his face. "Excuse me."

Alana stopped when she heard a voice call her. At first she thought it was just in her head, she hadn't ever met anyone else on this ship, since no others seemed to be as interested in searching for land items as she was. She had half a mind to simply keep on swimming and not pay the voice any mind, but when she turned she saw a merman with a charming smile.

He had a satchel, told her that he was in fact collecting items like she was. He was a very handsome merman, that much she could admit, and he looked nice enough. Even so, she was a bit upset that someone else was using her spot to collect. It was a bit childish, she knew, and luckily it didn't make her so upset that she demanded he left. No, she could deal with another person there, she just had to be faster about finding her items now.

She put on her own smile and offered him a small wave. "Hello, stranger. How goes the day?"

Niko was alert as usual, his dark eyes peering through the kelp beds as he surveyed the reef. He wasn't the type to take in the beauty that surrounded him at all, so he gave the colorful fish and coral a withering glance. His swords were in his hands like usual, and he bit back the urge to use them so he could make the fish back away from him. An octopus tentacle skimmed Niko's tail and he yelped in surprise and pulled back his tail quickly, causing the octopus to immediately curl up and turn into a shade of brown that matched the sea floor. Niko rolled his eyes and swam away, occasionally looking upward to see if there were any ships overhead.

He noticed a merman some distance away swimming towards one of the old shipwrecks. Niko didn't know the merman by name, but he saw him around sometimes. He smiled too much for Niko's taste. Still, the shipwreck was far off from the city and humans liked visiting the shipwreck. His father had told him many stories of mishaps happening there. Merpeople who liked gathering shiny stuff usually hung around the shipwreck no matter how many times people like Niko warned them. Well, it wouldn't hurt to try. He swam lazily over, his swords now secured on his waste by a homemade scabbard Niko had made of leather and net twine. He peeked his head in, spying the merman talking to a mermaid. He had seen the mermaid as well. Again- too much smiling. He sighed and swam over, but not too close.

"Hate to intrude but it's not safe being out here. I'm sure there are some shiny trinkets around the city for you to go after to your heart's content."

Alana turned from the merman and over to another. This one was more muscular, and he seemed to be more of a warrior as well. Alana eyed him warily. She had seen him around many times, but he had always looked to much like a fighter for her to talk to. The type that would tell her to stop gathering little trinkets and go off to do something productive. Okay, so perhaps she was stereotyping a bit when she thought that. She had to work on that, but it just irked her to have people treat her job like it was any less important than theirs.

She crossed her arms and felt a small frown tug on her lips. Sure he seemed to be saying this for their protection, but she wasn't about to have to comb through the outskirts of the city when there were so many trinkets here that were just waiting to be collected. She gently shook her head. "I am sorry, but I prefer to search for my trinkets here. It is more plentiful in its treasures and much more diverse. Plus, I haven't been hurt here yet, unless you count small scratches from accidently touching something sharp."

Isabelle Wright

Isabelle had been around people far too long this past week. The boat they were sailing to England on was rather small, and Isabelle could not be seen without a chaperone onboard the deck. She had never been to fond of the old woman who served as her governess, and later, her handmaid, but she was not one to complain. She stood now, on the deck of the ship, eyeing the murky ocean before her, while her handmaid shot warning eyes at any sailor who took in her angled dark features for too long.

"Oh, leave them be, Jean." Isabelle muttered in French. "They do not stare with ill intention. Merely rude English curiosity." Speaking of curiosity... "Jean, what is that shape less than a league away? Fetch me one of the crew who knows it." She said, leaning forward slightly over the edge of the boat.

"Madamoiselle, be careful." Jean said, reaching her hands out in an attempt to placate the girl.

"Oh, hush, I am not leaning dangerously far. Fetch the captain, I have a question for him."

Jean looked over the area warily, before leaving with a defeated huff. Isabelle did not often ask much of the woman, so she couldn't exactly say no to leaving her alone for a few mere seconds.

"Jean, It looks like a boat!" Isabelle called out to the woman, her eyes widening at the sight of broken wood- what had happened that had caused such destruction?

She leaned back, hoping to gain a better vantage of the wreck. She moved a few feet towards the bow, hoping to see perhaps a craggy rock that the ship had crashed against. As she did, she heard a scream.

"Lady, watch out!" A rough voice called out in English. Isabelle turned at the last moment, only to see a box, ripped free from it's bindings, flying at her. It crashed into her, knocking her overboard.

The last thing the young girl heard before she hit the water was Jean screaming her name, and several unladylike profanities.

As her heavy skirts pulled her beneath the water, she felt a moment of cold amusement at the sound of such words from her strict governess.

Niko eyes the mermaid with slight annoyance. Apparently it was all fun and games to these airhead trinket collectors. Sharks liked circling out here which wasn't exactly comforting. He knew a couple of Hus friends who liked riding them, but they weren't dolphins. Sharks would turn on you if they even caught a whiff of blood.

Niko was about to warn the two when there was a splashing sound. Niko swam out from the ship and looked up, only seeing a bunch of material floating, or sinking towards them. Niko's eyebrows furrowed, and his hand gripped one of his swords. Curiosity got the best of him as it always did though, and he started swimming towards the surface. Curiosity seemed like a curse no merperson could escape. He finally neared the shape and saw an arm, and realized it was a human. Niko growled and his sword was immediately out and ready. This was his chance to finally avenge his father. He was about to plunge the sword in the body until he finally caught the humans eyes.

It was a female. That alone made him halt his sword. He had always pictured humans to be killing machines, but mostly male. The only weapon this girl semed to have was that material she was wearing that was sinking her. Niko sighed and put away the sword. Hopefully this wouldn't come and bite him in the tail later. He simply grabbed the girl's arm and headed to the end of the boat. He knew people would be looking for the girl and he wasn't going to be seen by more. He pulled the girl out of the water, feeling how heavy the stupid material she wore was. Well he could fix that. He pulled out a small blade and cut away the bottom part, letting the other material sink into the water. There. He surveyed the ship, not exactly knowing how to get the girl onboard. He could leave though, he had done his part...He sighed and turned to the girl who he was still holding on to.

"Why aren't there any ropes being held down for you?"

Looking for trouble as always Lacie found herself backed into a corner with three sharks surrounding her "I can handle this" she whispered to herself. She pulled out her twin daggers and started slicing creating a diversion. She swam underneath the sharks who were in a daze but quickly caught on that their lunch was fleeing. Swimming backwards to see where the sharks were she bumped into something, turning around she saw a merman who had something in his arms. But the sharks were coming fast and there was no time to talk.

Torrick had rolled his eyes at the merman, his arms moving to cross over his chest. Some big shot warrior, warning them not to hunt for things where they were. The merman couldn't help the smirk that crossed his face, but before he could pop off some sarcastic remark, a splashing sounded from up above. It was hardly audible, but just enough so the alert the warrior merman.

Curiosity got the best of Torrick, for he quickly followed the warrior. When he saw the material sinking from the surface his mind lit up with recognition. It was something that female humans wore to cover their bodies. However, from the way the material was sinking there had to be something- or someone- inside the garment. Torrick followed the other merman, his tail working quickly. Once they were close enough to see the object, Torrick's eyes widened. It was a human! Part of him was terrified, knowing that many a human hunted their species, but the rest of him shot with excitement.

"Is it dead?" Torrick asked from behind the warrior, before watching with terror as he took out his sword. He couldnt kill it! Torrick was about to grab hold of the merman's arm, when the sword halted and the warrior grabbed hold of the human and swam to the surface. Torrick hesitated to follow him, for this human must have fallen from a ship. Surely the ship would be looking for her, and that meant danger. At the thought of danger, a small mischievous smile came onto Torrick's face, and he swam with the other merman to the surface and watched as he cut away the human's clothing.

He stared in awe at the human, his lips parted in wonder. The human was a female, Torrick could tell that by the angles of her face, and he moved closer for a better look. He'd only ever seen a human in the frozen reflection frames when he went scavenging. This human female was a nice change.

Isabelle Wright The water was cold. It was really, really cold. Isabelle had always enjoyed cool touch of the ocean in her home in Marseille, but here, on the northern side of the channel, it was devastatingly cold. She couldn't help but feel slightly amused. The peaceful calm ocean she had always loved was going to be the death of her, all due to her damned curiosity.

But, as she closed her eyes and accepted her death, she felt something grab her arm roughly. Someone was pulling her through the water, rather fast. Had one of the sailors jumped overboard to save her? What kind of fool was he?? He had doomed himself with her. Still, she could not help but be assured by the strong grip around her forearm.

Her head broke the surface, and gasping for air, she suddenly felt much lighter. She kicked feebly, and noticed that a large portion of her dress seemed to have disappeared. She took a moment to turn towards the man who had saved her- where had his shirt gone? She coughed. "Sir, are you mad?" She spluttered, instinctually jumping to her native french.

From behind, she heard another splash. "Two of you?" She asked, switching to English. "What on earth possessed you to come after-" She burst into another spout of coughs and chocking splutters. "Not that I am not terribly grateful." Her accented English was made harsh by the salt stinging her throat.

"Is there a rescue line being sent?" She asked, mere moments before someone on the deck called out to her. "Oh, it appears so."

Alana looked up when she heard the splash, seeing the other two swim after the sound caused her to go as well. She was surprised to see some sort of garment floating to the bottom, but what didn't make sense was how it could make such a splash. Usually when things such as this happened, it was just some container filled with trinkets fell in, not something like this. What really alarmed her was when she caught a glimpse of an arm, that was an actual human being.

The warrior seemed to have a heart, since he chose not to kill the human and instead helped her to the surface. Alana had learned a while ago that humans lacked the ability to survive for a long period of time underwater. What she didn't really know was why. She assumed it had something to do with their legs, since that was the only real difference she saw between them. Then again, humans always seemed to be wearing so many garments, there might be something else.

She surfaced as well, trying to see what exactly was going on here. This was something exciting, and she loved excitement. "Well then isn't this a change in tides." she had to admit, it was interesting seeing a human up close.

Niko whirled around and snarled at the thing that had approached him. It was just the other merman. Great. And then the mermaid approached. "I suppose gathering trinkets doesn't quite give you the rush like seeing a human huh?" He tensed up as soon as the words escaped. Well, this might turn out bad.

He made a harsh sound in his throat as he thought. Whatever, he needed to get rid of the human before she alerted more.

"We need to leave before they attack us or do something worse. For all we know she's bait." He released the human and turned to the others.
