History:

Cowrie was born in Onyx on Darkmist Isle, the home of Bodhisattva Anointed by Dark Water, to a poor family of artisans. She was apprenticed to a local smith at the age of ten because of her tall frame and proved to be quite capable at the job, more so than her admittedly poorly skilled master, by the age of fifteen. Her father married her off to a local boy named Kallan a little while later and the two of them set up house with a single zombie servant and lived a normal life until they were both eighteen, when Kallan decided for them both to leave Onyx for the Coral Archipelago.

Given little choice by the mores of the West, Cowrie joined her husband on the ship that was to carry them away, which also bore an Abyssal Exalt of the Moonshadow Caste called Diplomat of Tearful Promises. Tearful Promises, as he was called commonly, took a fancy to the attractive young woman and sensing her regret at leaving her family behind, offered her unlife as a concubine. Kallan took exception and attacked the Exalt, who swiftly and easily laid him out with a mortal wound. Cowrie shrunk back in shock and fear, her eyes wide, as the coldly handsome Tearful Promises approached her.

Unfortunately for Tearful Promises, Kallan Exalted as a Lunar and leapt at him, ripping a very nasty wound in his side and throwing him overboard. The newly Exalted (and quickly healing) Lunar took control of the ship by scaring the hell out of the living crew and destroying the zombies. They sailed to the Far West, where Kallan took Cowrie with him and settled down.

Kallan was found and taken away by the No Moons, Cowrie dragged along with him and forced to live amongst the barbarians, where her skills at smithing and fighting were honed by having to compete for scraps of food. While her husband underwent his initiation into the No Moon caste, she was learning to survive by wit and will. Finally, during one of her foraging trips, she came across an old tomb that contained the grave-goods of a Solar. The surprise of locating orichalcum Exalted her into the Twilight Caste.

Kallan changed his name to Shadow Ripper, his totem the sea-eagle and his Tell silver-coloured talons on his fingers and toes. Cowrie took the name Brightness for her Solar aura and the orichalcum breastplate and bracers that she wears, and while not accepted as nain-ya by the Silver Pact, is tolerated by the Southwestern Lunars because of her association with Shadow Ripper and her willingness to fight by their side if necessary.

Since her Exaltation, Brightness has started to travel more, trading with the Tya and often travelling far from home. Shadow Ripper has started to become angry over this and often follows his wife, which has caused some tremendous arguments between them. Brightness has discovered a new pleasure in life and some of the older Lunars like Swims in Shadow have begun openly speculating as to the future of her relationship with her equally sorcerous spouse.

Personality

Brightness has begun to live up to her name in more ways than one. Free from the shadows of Onyx and powerful enough that her husband must respect her, she has found a new joy in life, enjoying each new sensation as much as she enjoys creating new wonders with her Charms. With her ability to travel or send a messenger anywhere in the West, she has begun to make contact with other Solars like Iay Selak-Amu and Ocean Pearl, trading weapons and metalwork in return for lore and other luxuries that make living amongst Shadow Ripper’s Lunar friends and their barbarians bearable. Her willingness to fight alongside the Lunars and barbarians against threats like pirates and Fair Folk has earned her a measure of tolerance, but her open dislike of the harshness of their lifestyle has not gained her acceptance.

Appearance

Brightness is a tall young woman with golden-brown skin, straight black hair that she wears braided with leather thongs and large brown eyes. She wears a thick canvas jerkin and pants with thigh-high whale-hide boots, a wide belt hung with pouches of various kinds, a smith’s hammer and a knife, an orichalcum breastplate and matching bracers worked with clouds and a short spear and three javelins slung across her back. Her one indulgence at the moment is a many-stranded collar of pearls around her neck and matching earrings.

NB: Brightness was made for a 100 Exp, 45 Bonus Points game. I created her, her husband Shadow Ripper (a No Moon Lunar) and the Abyssal Exalt Diplomat of Tearful Promises as a nice little trio full of plot-hooks. She could be used in stories about the temptations of power, the freedom from destiny that an Exalt can experience and the squabbles Exalted spouses undergo at times. Or she could just be a really handy Western NPC. ;)
