Backstory:
Since childhood, Shun has known that he was different from other kids in the local school of his hometown, Asakami. This was because the Tsujimoto family had members from every generation to be meisters in the doctor class. Shun started off not really knowing whether he wanted to be an exorcist, which he told his grandparents. Growing up as a rather shy and timid boy who liked to listen more, he was relatively more open and talkative with his grandparents, who were the ones always home and taking care of him. His father and mother had been away on most weekends, where his father was a doctor-type exorcist. Other than the fundamental lessons he was given at home in identifying demons, Shun didn't really go out of his own way to learn more. He felt that he would rather just pretend that they didn't exist.
His thoughts of just wanting to be a normal student had changed after the Golden week holiday in his first year of middle school. It was to him a regular afternoon, until there was a commotion within his house, where his grandfather had rushed out of home just after dinner. Apparently his friend's family had encountered some trouble. The boy didn't know the full-scale problem of it, till the adults had brought in a girl with a rather demonic look in her eyes, with hands that looked like she wanted to tear the eyes out of everyone's faces. It scared Shun stiff seeing someone possessed by a demon.
With the limited number of people knowledgeable about demons and exorcists, Shun and his grandfather had watched the girl before the exorcist had finally arrived. But relief was short when the girl seemed to have recovered. Shun had realised two things: the possessed girl was Akira Kou from the other class, and his friend Kouji was a victim killed in the incident. Right outside in the streets about 20 minutes away.
Shun struggled to come to terms with it. Perhaps if he didn’t have the unusual empathy and soft-heartedness he wouldn't have talked to Akira after that. After a week, something in Shun seemed to have changed. It came to light when he had sat down in front of his grandfather again, saying that he had decided to want to become a doctor. Not a doctor for biological diseases, but for those harmed by demons. Though there would be an obvious tension between him and Akira whenever it reached towards 13th October, the two had started talking to each other more, as both have found their resolve in becoming exorcists.
Shun remains as the more experienced and open-minded of the two teens. Having grown up in the family, he has heard of cases where demons can be used as familiars, and that there were some more highly sophisticated demons that won't just recklessly look for destruction (though they can be even more dangerous on subtle terms). Thus, though he is wary around demons he doesn't have hatred forming immediately at the sight of one. Rather, his motivation is driven by his fear of more people hurt, particularly those he cares about. As he had said. "I don't want anyone to look like… what Kouji had looked like… again…"
Asakami is just a fictional town I've made up. It is in a fairly remote place, let's say within the mountains.
